X Bulldogs Looking To Rebound From Tough 2012-13 Season Not much went right for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs last season in Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick’s first year as a head coach. However, those hard times could pay dividends starting this season. Asheville was hit with injuries before the season even started. By the time the year was over five different players had suffered seasonending injuries that hijacked the year before it ever really began. All five players were starters or potential starters. Throw in injuries that limited other s to playing only half the season and at the end of the year, the Bulldogs had just eight healthy players available.

“We’re excited about the upcoming year. Everyone is on the same page and has bought into what we’re trying to do with the program,” explained Kirkpatrick. “At this point, we’re healthy for the most part and able to have good, constructive practices. “We’re pleased with our freshman class,” added Kirkpatrick. “We believe we have four impact players who are ready to make us better right away.” GUARDS

However, throughout the season Asheville fans saw a team that never gave up and kept battling right to the final buzzer of the final game of the year at the Big South Championship.

Asheville has a nice mixture of returnees and newcomers in the backcourt. Start with junior Shonese Jones, the 2012 Big South Rookie of the year. Jones was having a fine season as a sophomore and was averaging a team-leading 14.5 points per game.

“We all learned a lot last year,” declared Kirkpatrick. “All of us learned a lot from the coaches right down to the players. I became a better coach because I had to adjust to a lot of different situations.

“Shonese has not missed a step since her injury,” stated Kirkpatrick. “Her game is really maturing. She can still score but is now a more aggressive defender and becoming a better passer.”

“This year we’re focused on getting mentally tougher,” added Kirkpatrick. “We want to have an aggressive mentality both on offense and defense. We had to back off on that aggressiveness toward the end of last year with our numbers, but we hope to become a more aggressive team this season.”

Also coming back from a knee injury is junior Brittany Gwyn. But for Gwyn it’s been two different knee injuries the last two seasons. The High Point native hasn’t been very healthy since arriving two years ago, as she missed the first part of her freshman year with a mouth injury and then the last half of the season with a knee injury. She missed the first part of last season with that same knee injury and then played for about a month before suffering another knee injury and missing the rest of the year.

There are plenty of reasons for optimism for the Bulldogs in 201314. Asheville returns eight letterwinners from last year’s club, and for the most part everyone who was injured a year ago is now healthy and ready to go. Also throw in an outstanding recruiting class. The Asheville coaching staff signed four players last fall, and all four freshmen are expected to contribute to the Bulldogs right away.

“We’re pleased to see Brittany’s knees are in great shape and ready to go,” said Kirkpatrick. “She’s embraced the leadership role both on and off the court.” Red-shirt sophomore Tacey Trammell was another one of the Bulldogs’ walking wounded last season. She played in the season’s first two games before injuring her knee and missing the entire year.

from the three-point line. She is also an exceptional distributor of the basketball. Jada is an exciting player to watch because she makes everyone else around her a better player.” FORWARDS The frontcourt will be led by one of Asheville’s two returning starters from last season. Junior Jeannie Buckner did a solid job for the Bulldogs a year ago with a 4.6 scoring and 4.0 rebounding average. She led the team in blocked shots with 24 and was second in three-pointers made with 31. “Jeannie is versatile player who can play either forward spot for us,” explained Kirkpatrick. “She’s a much improved perimeter defender and knows how to handle the basketball. Jeannie has embraced her role as a leader and is a hard worker who goes hard at all times.” Sophomore Tyler Smith earned some playing time last year, and her role could expand this season. “Tyler is one of our best shooters in the post and can stretch a defense,” said Kirkpatrick. “She stepped up for us in some games last season and got some great experience.”

Paige Love “Tacey utilized her time away from the game last year wisely,” commented Kirkpatrick. “She learned the game a little better and understands our system and is ready to excel in her new skill set. Tacey has a great defensive presence and is one of our better three-point shooters.” Sophomore Paige Love learned a lot last season as a freshman. With injuries, she was forced to play the point guard spot in the last part of the season. Love finished with a 7.4 scoring average and was second on the team with 83 assists. “We really threw Paige into the fire last year, but she grew a lot because of that experience,” explained Kirkpatrick. “She is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever coached and will do anything she’s asked that’s best for our team.” Freshman Chatori Major is a 5-7 guard who is one of the four newcomers on this year’s club. Major joins the Bulldog program from Camp Lejeune HS in Camp Lejeune, N.C. “Chatori is one of the fastest players I’ve ever seen,” declared Kirkpatrick. “She attacks the basket and creates for us on offense, and her aggressiveness will help us on defense when we press.” Tianna Knuckles is a 5-10 freshman guard who played at East Wake HS in Wendell, N.C. “Tianna will bring size to the perimeter,” stated Kirkpatrick. “She’s a long, athletic player who is a great three-point shooter. Tianna is also a great one-on-one scorer who can score in transition. We also expect her to give us some rebounding in the backcourt.” Rookie guard Jada Brayboy won four state championships at Providence Day School in Charlotte. She’s a 5-6 point guard who could make in impact for the Bulldogs right away. “Jada has great court vision and likes to have the ball in her hands with the game on the line,” admitted Kirkpatrick. “She is a true point guard with the ability to score off of on-ball screens, in transition, and

The Bulldogs are pleased to have red-shirt sophomore Leah Wormack back this season. Wormack only played in four games last year before missing the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. As a freshman in the 2011-12 season, she earned a spot on the Big South All Freshman team with a 10.6 scoring average. “We’re glad to have Leah back this year, and I know she’s hungry to get out and play and make a contribution,” admitted Kirkpatrick. “She’ll be one of our best low-post scorers. Leah is a smart player and knows how to play the game.” CENTERS Asheville has several options at the center spot this season. Sophomore Rachel McGirt showed some promise as a 6-1 freshman a year ago. “Rachel has worked very hard and is in the best shape she’s ever been,” stated Kirkpatrick. “She is determined to play this season, and we expect her to get some minutes throughout the year.” The Bulldogs’ lone senior is 6-4 center Abra Sickles. She battled some injuries last season and only played in 15 games. “Abra is determined to make her senior season her best season,” said Kirkpatrick. “She’s playing with confidence and gives us a great presence inside. Abra also plays solid defense in the post.” Asheville’s fourth freshman is 6-1 center KJ Weaver from Miller Grove HS in Snellville, Ga. She was the MVP of the state championship game her junior year as she led Miller Grove to a state title. “What we like about KJ is she just finds a way to make things happen,” pointed out Kirkpatrick. “She was the best defensive player and shot-blocker on her team. KJ knows how to play the game and also runs the floor very well.” SCHEDULE Sixteen home games at Kimmel Arena plus a trip to national power Vanderbilt highlight the 2013-14 UNC Asheville women’s basketball schedule.

“I am energized about this upcoming season for many reasons, one of which is our challenging schedule,” stated Kirkpatrick. “We worked hard to construct a non-conference slate that will prepare our players for Big South play while bringing some excitement to Kimmel Arena.” The Bulldogs begin the season with two games against Southern Conference foes. Asheville opens at Kimmel Arena against Furman on Nov. 9 and then travels to Wofford on Nov. 14. “The first home game for men’s or women’s basketball in Kimmel Arena this year will be our opener versus Furman,” commented Kirkpatrick. “We are excited to have the opportunity to play the first game of a highly anticipated season of basketball at UNC Asheville.” Kirkpatrick’s club hosts Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky (Nov. 16) before playing at mountain rival Western Carolina (Nov. 20). A two-game homestand for the Bulldogs begins against North Carolina Central (Nov. 23) and ends versus Bluefield (Nov. 26). Asheville opens Big South Conference play on the road at Charleston Southern (Dec. 2) and Campbell (Dec. 11), sandwiched around a non-league home game against USC Upstate (Dec. 7). The Blue & White finish their non-conference schedule prior to Christmas by hosting North Carolina A&T (Dec. 17) before visiting highly regarded Vanderbilt (Dec. 21). “We limited our non-conference travel to three road games in the early season, enabling our young group to establish chemistry in front of our own fans,” explained Kirkpatrick.

Leah Wormack Asheville returns from the Christmas holidays to Big South Conference play as the Bulldogs host Gardner-Webb (Dec. 28), Presbyterian College (Dec. 30) and WNIT quarterfinalist Winthrop (Jan. 2). Asheville heads to Longwood (Jan. 9) and Radford (Jan. 11) before coming back to Kimmel Arena to face High Point (Jan. 16) and defending Big South champion Liberty (Jan. 18). Asheville is on the road for four of its next five games. The Blue & White play at Coastal Carolina (Jan. 23), host Charleston Southern (Jan. 26) and travel to Presbyterian College (Jan. 30), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 1) and Winthrop (Feb. 8). Kirkpatrick’s club finishes the regular season with home games against Radford (Feb. 13) and Longwood (Feb. 15), road contests at Liberty (Feb. 20) and High Point (Feb. 22) and home dates versus Campbell (Feb. 27) and Coastal Carolina (March 1). The Big South Conference championship will be held on the campus of Coastal Carolina the week of March 4-9. “For the first time in the Big South Conference, we will be playing everyone at home and on the road,” said Kirkpatrick. “Our players and staff are excited to compete for the first Big South championship in women’s basketball since 2007.

I am particularly impressed by the high quality of student-athletes that call UNC Asheville home and their outstanding graduation rate. It demonstrates a high level of commitment from the athletic department as well as the university to prepare our student-athletes for the next step in life after their athletic careers are completed.

Kirkpatrick broke into the coaching ranks for the 2002-03 season at Georgia Tech under then-head coach Agnus Berenato, helping the Yellow Jackets win 20 games and earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in program history. Berenato departed following that record-setting campaign for the University of Pittsburgh, while Kirkpatrick remained on staff in Atlanta for 2003-04 before heading to Jacksonville. A successful collegiate playing tenure afforded Kirkpatrick the opportunity to play professionally in France for Nantes-Reze 44 during the 2001-02 season before launching her coaching career.

Kirkpatrick earned a bachelor’s of arts in history and sociology in 2000 and a master’s of arts in education in 2001 from Wake Forest University. She enjoyed an outstanding career in WinstonSalem, where the two-time captain averaged 7.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest during her four-year career. Despite having to take a medical redshirt (ACL) for the 1996-97 season that delayed her collegiate debut, Kirkpatrick did not miss a game during her fouryear career, appearing in all 111 contests and earning 57 starts.

All-America selection by Street & Smith and USA Today in 1995 and 1996, while setting two state records for free throws: most in a game (25-of-25) and most consecutive (39), totaling 51 points in the game she hit 25 free throws. Kirkpatrick was the Asheville Citizen-Times Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons. She played for John Best at Tuscola in basketball.

Honey Brown Second Year • Maryville, 1994 Former St. Louis assistant coach Honey Brown begins her second year as a member of Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick’s coaching staff. “Honey is truly one of the hardest working people I have been around in my coaching career,” stated Kirkpatrick. “She is driven, resourceful and loyal. She is a great asset not only on the court with player development but in every facet of our program. I feel much more confident attacking every challenge with Honey as a member of our staff.” During her career, she has coached eight all-conference performers, including one conference player of the year and one most improved player. She’s also coached six 1,000-point scorers. Brown spent four seasons as an assistant with the Billikens’ program, working primarily with SLU’s point guards. She assisted with scouting opponents and all aspects of recruiting, while also serving as a liaison with the Saint Louis athletic academic coordinator.

Prior to her tenure with Ohio, Brown spent a season with Central Florida, working as an assistant coach with the UCF program. She helped guide the UCF program to the 1998-99 Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament championships, earning an NCAA Tournament berth in the process.

Brown got her start in coaching as an assistant with Lenoir Prior to her time with the Billikens, Brown served as direcCity High School in Lenoir,Tenn.While with LCHS she helped lead tor and head trainer at Performance Training, Inc., in Orlando, Fla. the Panthers to a state tournament appearance in 1998. While there she managed all aspects of the company, including staffing issues, schedules and marketing. Brown is a 1994 graduate of Maryville College. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry for secondary education. Janell Crayton Second Year • Davidson, 2006 Former William & Mary assistant Janell Crayton is in her second year as an assistant coach with the Bulldog program. She is the Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator. “Janell has done a tremendous job in her first year as an assistant coach and more specifically as our recruiting coordinator on staff,” stated Bulldog coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “We signed a fantastic 2013 class and are well on our way to another one for 2014. Recruiting is an essential piece to rebuilding this program and I know Janell has what it takes to spearhead our efforts for this staff. She also has a tremendous heart for leading our young ladies on and off the court and making an impact in each one of our student athletes’ lives.” Crayton’s duties with the Tribe program included film exchange, coordinating team travel, on-campus recruiting, team promotional activities, as well as other administrative responsibilities. Crayton joined the William and Mary staff after working as an assistant coach at Colgate University in 2010-11. While with the Raiders, her duties included recruiting, player development, scouting, travel, and special event planning. On the court, Crayton helped work with and develop the Colgate post players. Prior to Colgate, she worked at Oberlin College, where she served as an assistant coach, interim head coach, and associate head coach during her three seasons. In these roles, Crayton’s responsibilities included team travel, scouting, coordinating community service, film break down, recruiting, and player skill development. During her time at Oberlin, five players earned allconference honors. Before coaching at Oberlin, Crayton was an assistant coach at Oglethorpe University for a season. Crayton is a 2006 graduate of Davidson College, where she was a four-year letter-winner for the Wildcats. A two-year captain, Crayton was named First-Team All-Southern Conference and AllTournament Team in 2006. Crayton was also a standout in the classroom, twice being named academic all-conference.

Daniel Barber First Year • Florida, 2012 The newest member of the UNC Asheville women’s basketball staff is Florida native Daniel Barber. Barber joined the Bulldog coaching staff this summer after serving as a team manager and graduate assistant at the University of Florida for head coach Amanda Butler. “I am extremely excited that Daniel Barber is joining our Bulldog family as an assistant coach in our program. I have known Daniel from my years as an assistant coach at Florida and always admired his work ethic and passion for the game,” stated head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. Last year, Barber was responsible for conducting individual summer workouts with the team. He assisted the coaching staff with scouting reports and worked with team finance. He graduated from Florida in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science As the head manager with Florida in the 2011-12 season, he degree in nutrition with specialization in dietetics. was responsible for distribution of equipment to players, coaches and staff. Jennifer Brazelton Second Year • Western Carolina, 2012 Jennifer Brazelton is in her second year as Director of Basketball Operations for the UNC Asheville women’s basketball program. “Jennifer Brazelton continues to grow and develop in her role as director of operations and has taken on quite a bit more responsibility with travel and video exchange this season,” commented Bulldog coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. She began working with the women’s program in the summer of 2012 as an intern and was promoted last fall to Director of Basketball Operations.

Brazelton is a 2012 graduate of Western Carolina where she earned a degree in sports management.
