Find the art in science and the science in art. The Liberal Arts offer a time-tested blueprint to get the most out of your college education. It’s called interdisciplinary learning. We encourage you to explore many different subjects outside your chosen major to understand how they interact. For example: How science influences art, how economics drives sustainability or how history is rediscovered through modern technology. Lei Han: Associate Professor Lei Han helps her new media students cross the technical divide with one-on-one and Q&A sessions in every class. Like so many professors at UNC Asheville, she prefers leading discussions rather than giving lectures. Jason Wingert: Every student in the health and wellness promotion major knows Jason Wingert very well. He’s one of the department’s many professors who regularly recruit students to work on real-world research projects. Surain Subramaniam: Students get a broader worldview in Surain Subramaniam’s classes. His Asian studies discussions are packed with deeply relevant cultural, economic, historical and social insights from this associate professor—and he has an awesome sense of humor, too.

The research focused on the effects of cloud immersion on plant health in relation to the earth’s changing climate.

International studies major Zachary Hefner ’14 learns to write his Chinese name and the word “friend” during the first faculty-led study abroad trip to China. The three-week interdisciplinary course took students to four cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Ha’erbin and Xi’an. Zachary only needed one word to sum up the once-in-a-lifetime experience—“amazing.”

Ben McDonald ’12: As a senior, Ben conducted experiments with combretastatin, a cancer drug that prevents bloodflow to tumors. Though he worked with the guidance of his professors, Ben was given enough creative room to be the planner, architect and builder of all his

experiments. After graduation, he started his Ph.D. in chemistry at Northwestern University. Caroline Dougherty ’10: As a new media major and literature minor, Caroline learned how to tell a story both visually and textually. Today, she serves as science information designer for the National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center. She works with the U.S. Forest Service, NASA, National Climatic Data Center and other organizations to ensure scientists’ findings are not just heard, but understood by the general public. Wiley Cash ’00: He majored in literature, but it was his history classes and the magic of the mountains of nearby Madison County that inspired Wiley Cash’s first novel, A Land More Kind Than Home. The award-winning book debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list and promptly won praise by reviewers in USA

Today, Vanity Fair and O Magazine. Tanya Harris ’06: When she arrived at UNC Asheville, Tanya knew that she wanted to be a lawyer, but she had no idea what kind of law to pursue. Then she took a course with Psychology Professor Pam Laughon, where she helped successfully reverse a death penalty conviction. Today, as an assistant public defender in Mecklenburg County, Tanya represents clients who can’t afford their own attorneys.
