Find the art in science and the science in art. The Liberal Arts offer a time-tested blueprint to get the most out of your college education. It’s called interdisciplinary learning. We encourage you to explore many different subjects outside your chosen major to understand how they interact. Jason Wingert: Every student in the health and wellness promotion major knows Assistant Professor Jason Wingert very well. He’s one of the department’s many professors who regularly recruit students to work on realworld research projects. Lei Han: Associate Professor Lei Han helps her new media students cross the technical divide with one-on-one and Q&A sessions in every class. Like so many professors at UNC Asheville, she prefers leading discussions rather than giving lectures. Dwight Mullen: Discussions that start in Political Science Professor Dwight Mullen’s classes extend into the local Asheville community through lab courses and field placements, and he brings music, film and fiction to his diversified approach to political science.

The research focused on the effects of cloud immersion on plant health in relation to the earth’s changing climate.

Joe Phillips ’09: This atmospheric sciences graduate has taken his degree to new extremes—to the deepest reaches of Antarctica, where winter temperatures average around minus 70 degrees. As station chief for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration research post, he maintains a suite of instruments that sample the atmosphere, and he witnesses some of the atmospheric phenomena once discussed in his classes more than 8,600 miles away. Tanya Harris ’06: When she arrived at UNC Asheville, Tanya knew that she wanted to be a lawyer, but she had no idea what kind of law to pursue. Then she took a course with Psychology Professor Pam Laughon, where she helped successfully reverse a death penalty conviction. Today, as an assistant public defender in Mecklenburg County, Tanya represents clients who can’t afford their own attorneys. Katie Johnson Katie Johnson ’13: A close collaboration between Katie and Associate Professor of Art History Leisa Rundquist culminated in a major exhibition at the Asheville Art Museum, featuring works by “outsider” and self-taught artists. Katie developed insider knowledge of the curatorial process, an experience she plans to tout on graduate school applications, along with an inaugural scholarship award from the American Folk Art Society. Wiley Cash ’00: He majored in literature, but it was his history classes and the magic of the mountains of nearby Madison County that inspired Wiley Cash’s first novel, A Land More Kind Than Home. The award-winning book debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list and promptly won praise by reviewers in USA Today, Vanity Fair and O Magazine. Wiley Cash
