Your journey begins in the College of Arts and Sciences, where you’ll build a foundation of knowledge and critical thinking skills during your first two years. This experience will prepare you for your next step — choosing a major or applying to one of our professional schools. Throughout your four years here, you’ll learn from world-class faculty that includes an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, a National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient, and a Nobel Prize Laureate. STUDY ABROAD
Aaron’s story. What’s yours? First-generation college student Aaron Epps’ success can’t be measured simply by the completion of degree requirements or his GPA. Aaron is an Honors student, studied abroad in Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, and is a co-chair of the Black Student Movement, among several other leadership and extracurricular involvements. Despite how passionate he is about his activities and classes, Aaron credits his love for UNC to being immersed in an empathetic, supportive student body. “I knew UNC students cared and were passionate to see one another succeed, and I wanted to be a part of that.” — Aaron Epps, UNC ‘18 Fairmont, NC

RESEARCH & INTERNSHIPS Whether connected through your professors or other campus resources, you’ll have numerous ways to extend your learning outside the classroom. Some examples include studying gene mutations at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, tracing the roots of a hip-hop group made famous on the internet, and interning for a costume designer of a Broadway production. “During my undergraduate career, my education major has exposed me to multiple internships, including visits to daycares and schools. Jennifer’s story. What’s yours? Jennifer has enjoyed time to pursue her passions in both the sciences and arts, while serving on the Honor Court, mentoring study abroad students, and getting involved with the Out-of-State Students Association — all with the peace of mind of knowing she has already been admitted to the top pharmacy school in the nation. “At UNC, you’ll not only receive a world-class education, you’ll also have the chance to broaden your horizons and open your mind. For me, studying abroad and being constantly surrounded by people who have led a far different life from my own have helped me grow beyond measure. And that has been the most rewarding of all.”

Udara’s story. What’s yours? In high school, Udara never thought of advertising as a possible area of study. Though biology had always been a realized passion, he appreciates UNC for broadening his understanding of learning and opening the door to many different possibilities. Now as a double major in biology and media and journalism, Udara has found a way to explore both of these interests. Tim’s story. What’s yours? Alumnus Tim Durbin’s journey to become the first American to run 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days began when he took “Intermediate Jogging” for his physical education requirement at UNC. He developed a passion for running and travel, with a love of meeting people along his journey. After participating in the 2015 World Marathon Challenge, he kept his momentum going by setting a goal to run the distance of the equator within 10 years. Looking back, he’s grateful for Carolina for giving him a community of people who were equally passionate about their interests and who embraced the idea of going the extra mile to accomplish their goals. “My professors and friends at UNC shaped who I am, and they all were motivated in their own ways, whether it be about running, writing, politics or medicine.” — Tim Durbin, UNC ‘05 Decatur, IL
Andrea’s story. What’s yours? Andrea is an environmental science major with a minor in geography. She is also earning her Master’s degree in strategic communications through one of Carolina’s dual degree programs. Andrea recently traveled to Freiburg, Germany for an internship at a non-profit, educating visitors on the city’s green initiatives. When she’s not investigating environmental issues, you may find Andrea giving prospective students a campus tour, teaching spin class at the campus recreation center or managing a team of ushers at the Carolina Performing Arts. Andrea’s hard work and Carolina’s financial aid has made it all possible. “Carolina has countless academic opportunities and amazing people, and I am fortunate to have received enough financial aid that I will graduate debt free.
