Congratulations! We’re honored that you chose to apply to Carolina, and we hope you’ll join our Tar Heel community. Here you’ll find a diverse group of classmates and faculty who will care about you and inspire you to think and grow. We’ll also support and celebrate you as you take advantage of the wide array of opportunities we offer. We’re excited too, because we believe that you’ll make us all better along the way. We can’t predict exactly which path you’ll take, but we can promise you this. Your time here will be a thrilling journey of self-discovery and exploration that will prepare you to lead the life you’ve always imagined. And when you do graduate, you may leave Chapel Hill but your friends and the memories you make here will never leave you.

RESEARCH & INTERNSHIPS Whether connected through your professors or other campus resources, you’ll have numerous ways to extend your learning outside the classroom. Some examples include studying gene mutations at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, tracing the roots of a hip-hop group made famous on the internet, and interning for a costume designer of a Broadway production. “During my undergraduate career, my education major has exposed me to multiple internships, including visits to daycares and schools. Within my first semester in the major, I’ve already had many opportunities to mingle with distinguished faculty and find jobs outside of campus.” — Renee Coleman, UNC ‘17 Winston-Salem, NC
Hallie’s story. What’s yours? Leaving rural eastern North Carolina as the first in her family to attend college, Hallie knew she would need extra support to get to where she wanted to be. Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C- STEP) provided that support and more. Since transferring to Carolina, Hallie has taken advantage of the many opportunities here, from Splash UNC to Buckley Public Service Scholars, to Carolina Research Scholars. Now as a senior, she is completing her honors thesis on African American women and medicine in American literature. “Throughout my time as an undergraduate, I have grown both academically and personally. From learning how to write in new styles to traveling abroad for the first time, UNC has always been there to help me confidently tackle new challenges.” — Hallie French, UNC ‘17 Aurora, NC
Aaron’s story. What’s yours? For Aaron Epps, success can’t be measured simply by the completion of his degree requirements or his GPA. Aaron is an Honors student, studied abroad in Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, and is a co-chair of the Black Student Movement, among several other leadership and extracurricular involvements. Despite how passionate he is about his activities and classes, Aaron credits his love for UNC to being immersed in an empathetic, supportive student body.

STUDY ABROAD Want to enhance your education with a global experience? At UNC, you’ll have your choice of 300+ study abroad programs in over 70 countries — whether you want to research a specific culture or issue, intern with an international organization, or just polish your language skills. “I studied abroad in Florence, Italy for my studio art minor, and the experience was more challenging and more rewarding than I could have imagined. Enjoying the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo after my final studio project, and getting my ‘last’ gelato with UNC friends stand out in my mind. In just 4 weeks, they turned $500,000 into nearly $1.32 million virtual dollars, earning UNC $30,000 in scholarships and landing the team an appearance on CNBC’s Fast Money. “Our team had a diverse collection of interests and skill sets, which worked well for us. Chelsea’s story. What’s yours? Chelsea is a “double Tar Heel,” which means she completed her undergraduate degree at UNC and returned to Chapel Hill for her law degree. Having grown up in a small town near her Lumbee tribal community, she was nervous about the transition to Carolina. But in coming to UNC, she found a home within Native American interest groups on campus, even taking on leadership positions within them, and found the support and confidence she needed to apply to law school. “Though I worked hard to earn these opportunities, I wouldn’t have gotten there without the support system I established within the Native community at Carolina.”

Isai’s story. What’s yours? Isai transferred to UNC from a community college because he knew that Carolina was the place he wanted to be to reach his goals. Being a Tar Heel has allowed him to dive into groundbreaking research and learn from world-class, dedicated professors who care about his success. Grateful for the support he received in his transition to UNC, Isai is now working with the Upward Bound Program to help high school students prepare for success in college, as well as mentoring UNC transfer students in the Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP). “My best advice to incoming transfer students is to jump in as soon as you can. Don’t be afraid to approach your professors or ask for help when you need it.
