ACADEMICS

Throughout your time here, you’ll learn from world-class faculty that includes an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, a National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient, and a Nobel Prize Laureate. You’ll also have opportunities to collaborate with your professors on nationally-funded research and projects outside the classroom.

“My favorite class was Political Science 490 — Agenda Formation in Presidential Trade-craft — with Professor Terry Sullivan. He’s not only deeply knowledgeable about the issues at hand, but he’s frank and engaging, and our thought-provoking conversations allowed me to continue grappling with the topics discussed outside of class — and that’s a pretty good measurement of when you’ve found the best class.” — Javier Zurita, UNC ‘18

RESEARCH & INTERNSHIPS Whether connected through your professors or other campus resources, you’ll have numerous ways to extend your learning outside the classroom. Some examples include studying gene mutations at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, tracing the roots of a hip-hop group made famous on the internet, and interning for a costume designer of a Broadway production. “During my undergraduate career, my education major has exposed me to multiple internships, including visits to daycares and schools. Within my first semester in the major, I’ve already had many opportunities to mingle with distinguished faculty and find jobs outside of campus.” — Renee Coleman, UNC ‘17 Winston-Salem, NC

Hallie’s story. What’s yours? Leaving rural eastern North Carolina as the first in her family to attend college, Hallie knew she would need extra support to get to where she wanted to be. Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C- STEP) provided that support and more. Since transferring to Carolina, Hallie has taken advantage of the many opportunities here, from Splash UNC to Buckley Public Service Scholars, to Carolina Research Scholars. Now as a senior, she is completing her honors thesis on African American women and medicine in American literature. “Throughout my time as an undergraduate, I have grown both academically and personally. From learning how to write in new styles to traveling abroad for the first time, UNC has always been there to help me confidently tackle new challenges.” — Hallie French, UNC ‘17 Aurora, NC

Aaron’s story. What’s yours? For Aaron Epps, success can’t be measured simply by the completion of his degree requirements or his GPA. Aaron is an Honors student, studied abroad in Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, and is a co-chair of the Black Student Movement, among several other leadership and extracurricular involvements. Despite how passionate he is about his activities and classes, Aaron credits his love for UNC to being immersed in an empathetic, supportive student body.

“I knew UNC students cared and were passionate to see one another succeed, and I wanted to be a part of that.” — Aaron Epps, UNC ‘18 Fairmont, NC

STUDY ABROAD Want to enhance your education with a global experience? At UNC, you’ll have your choice of 300+ study abroad programs in over 70 countries — whether you want to research a specific culture or issue, intern with an international organization, or just polish your language skills. “I studied abroad in Florence, Italy for my studio art minor, and the experience was more challenging and more rewarding than I could have imagined. Enjoying the sunset at Piazzale Michelangelo after my final studio project, and getting my ‘last’ gelato with UNC friends stand out in my mind. But I also appreciate the moments that pushed me and taught me lessons I couldn’t have fully learned otherwise.” — Jennifer Morrison, UNC ‘17 Brookeville, MD

JOURNALISM

“Right after I transferred to Carolina, I remember walking to class and seeing every single person wearing Carolina blue and the insignia. That was just not something people did at my former institution. At that point, I felt like I was a part of something that was really big, which I hadn’t felt before coming to UNC.” — Sarah Whitmore ‘17 Charlotte, NC

“I went to Rio to cover the biggest sporting event in the world. I can't believe the university I dreamed of attending — which happens to be a 6-time Hearst champion, by the way — actually sent me to cover the Olympics. The hands-on experience, the connections, the memories — I'm incredibly thankful for this opportunity." — Brett Thompson, UNC ‘17 Lincolnton, NC

From creating video games for the visually impaired in a Computer Science class to developing social media campaigns for a local election in a Media and Journalism course, your professors will frequently combine service with learning

Have an idea for a social venture or looking for a global service opportunity? Get connected through the Campus Y or the Carolina Center for Public Service, two resources that provide funding, mentorship, and opportunities to develop your leadership skills.

Team up with your friends and maybe you’ll be the next winner of Ameritrade’s thinkorswim challenge like the four members of Pi Lambda Phi pictured here. In just 4 weeks, they turned $500,000 into nearly $1.32 million virtual dollars, earning UNC $30,000 in scholarships and landing the team an appearance on CNBC’s Fast Money. “Our team had a diverse collection of interests and skill sets, which worked well for us. It was an intense and exhilarating learning experience and those of us who are here next year absolutely plan to do it again.” Grahme Taylor, UNC ‘17 Bethesda, MD

Go blue and green

Here’s another benefit to living on campus - you’ll be in good company if you want to reduce your carbon footprint. Compete in the annual Residential Green Games where you and your neighbors can lead the way in recycling, composting, and promoting the environment within your community. Or volunteer to help with the edible garden where you can exercise your green thumb and enjoy a healthy snack.

CAROLINA

Chelsea’s story. What’s yours? Chelsea is a “double Tar Heel,” which means she completed her undergraduate degree at UNC and returned to Chapel Hill for her law degree. Having grown up in a small town near her Lumbee tribal community, she was nervous about the transition to Carolina. But in coming to UNC, she found a home within Native American interest groups on campus, even taking on leadership positions within them, and found the support and confidence she needed to apply to law school. “Though I worked hard to earn these opportunities, I wouldn’t have gotten there without the support system I established within the Native community at Carolina.”

— Chelsea Barnes, UNC ‘15 Hope Mills, NC

When you graduate, you’ll be ready to make your mark on the world at leading non-profits or Fortune 500 companies. Or at graduate or professional programs in fields such as medicine, law, chemistry, business, and political science at institutions such as Oxford, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and UNC.

Isai’s story. What’s yours? Isai transferred to UNC from a community college because he knew that Carolina was the place he wanted to be to reach his goals. Being a Tar Heel has allowed him to dive into groundbreaking research and learn from world-class, dedicated professors who care about his success. Grateful for the support he received in his transition to UNC, Isai is now working with the Upward Bound Program to help high school students prepare for success in college, as well as mentoring UNC transfer students in the Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP). “My best advice to incoming transfer students is to jump in as soon as you can. Don’t be afraid to approach your professors or ask for help when you need it. You’ll find that people in the Carolina community are always willing to help you grow.” — Isai Garcia - Baza, UNC ‘17 Chapel Hill, NC
