INTRODUCTION
“APARTMENT DESIGN IN RANDWICK ANGELO CANDALEPAS
The project is designed to engage with the core tasks of architecture within a familiar and useful typology. The proposal includes consideration of a site upon which the tutor has created a design in the past decade. In the first instance, there is a consideration sought, relating to an abstract and more epistemological consideration of the task to hand, including readings and critiques of ideas as disparate as those of Hofstander, Eliot and Popper. On the other hand, the expectation of the studio is that technical considerations such as SEPP 65 and the BCA are met; as are the rules and codes of the local council as to height and compliance of LEP and density. This studio has preferred the technical precision of architectural drawing/technique rather than the presentation-driven agenda which is now-familiar in final year. In this way, the drawings need to represent that which is imagined by their author in the context of 2-dimensional representations. This is aimed to offer an abstraction in communicating ideas familiar to architects only. A position relating to the connection of the buildings to their site has been observed to be a reliable test of thesis as to architecture and this, lastly, is represented in the final decisions made by the students as to siting and landscape juxtapositions. It has been a challenging year for many of you; hopefully you have taken the necessary risks to elevate your work to take you beyond that stage of excellence which you had imagined possible. The standards you set for yourselves for this last assignment will be those that will set the basis for your position toward architecture for your entire career. I hope that you have exercised the necessary temerity and care for the project, through all the difficulty of knowing it, to not forget that with all love comes anguish, only with sweat comes greatness.

“The grid, unlike the fixed visual image, can accept and respond to growth and change. It can be developed unimaginatively and monotonously or with great freedom” (Leslie Martin, The Grid as Generator, 2000, Pg. 314) The units are designed in grid form to be consistent with subtle tweak, as in corresponce with Sir Leslie Martin. The grid based design benefits in regulating and repeating the units which also minimise the circulation space, consistent with objectives of SEPPs 65. ‘We need secrecy and shadow as we desire to see and to know…” (J. Pallasmaa, City Sense: The City as Perceived, Remembered and Imagines, 1996, pg.143)

All units are designed to maintain certain degree of privacy for individual units and yet able to connect to the surrounding landscape. Options are provided on all units, including the landscape of the site. buildings are loacated on peritmeter of the site, and the centre of the site remained untouched. This allows many of the existing trees to be retained and created a ‘courtyard’ with the sense of enclosure.

In a L-shaped site in Randwick, this design proposal consists in a block of 72 apartments designed considering primarily the site’s existing conditions and its unique characteristics in order to fulfil the brief requirements and to deliver efficient and meaningful spaces for its residents. The proposed building sits on an existing flat area and maintains the large amount of trees. By letting most of the natural environment ‘untouched’ it is created an intentional contrast between the natural and the built environments. This contrast is only broken by a linear pathway that connects the two entries and creates a functional connection between the outdoor spaces and also provides several different experiences to the user while walking through it. The units are displayed on the site boundaries, creating a large and minimalist courtyard from where the units are accessed. The units are cross-ventilated and have plenty of natural light. Inside there is a clear distinction between social and intimate spaces, offering moments of social interaction and solitude. The overall form composition is based on rhythm and symmetry and the elements are composed following a rigid grid creating a sense of with order, harmony and movement.

Appropriateness of form, fenestration, landscaping etc., as elements of a proposal, are not only derived from the architect’s aesthetic concerns. As a design on a site with its rich natural features, rude interventions on the natural landscape would make the design out of place. Blessed with the intricate and landform and vegetation, residents of the site could enjoy and should be able to enjoy their connection with the nature. In the western part of the site, a rectilinearity courtyard is deployed in order to express , artificiality, responding to the character of this flattened part of the site. By contrast, the eastern part alongside Wentworth St. is characterised by its natural status. In realising this, the presence of human construction is minimised. The landscape of the eastern part of the site is kept as untouched as possible.
Model: Artificial Landscape
Across the entire site, one would experience the ascending landscape from Dangar Street to the west to Wentworth Street to the east and the transition from artificiality to naturality at the same time. With economic judgements considered, a modular forms has been chosen in most part of the proposal. At the same time, slight changes to modules happen to introduce intricacy to the scheme while the repetition nature is still kept for architectural order. Model: Natural Landscape

“Nature is brought into the complex by retaining as much trees as possible and laying out the complex around the existing nature and letting the architecture indulge itself in the beauty of the nature.” A house is a space for habitants, an existential one, coloured with individual’s unique interpretation of space through their experiences, memories and feelings. In line with this, Pallasmaa (1999) once quoted; “... the lived reality does not follow the rules of space and time...” A space is such a waste when designed withouth the understanding of human life and its quality and characteristics of existance which Jean-Paul Sartre referred to as ‘the essence’. Hence, as said by Maurice Merleau-Ponty, it is the role of architecture to create a space which connects the living and the non-living, giving space for both to interact with one another intimately. This project of medium density housing complex therefore, is intended to reflect the idea of connecting nature with its habitants. Nature is brought into the complex by retaining as much trees as possible and laying out the complex around the existing nature and letting the architecture indulge itself in the beauty of the nature. This contradicts the ever-growing norm of creating an artificial parkland or backyard garden in residential areas, which looked as if it is nature-friendly and ideal, but in fact, disfigured the original state of the land, thus, disrupt the ecosystem. This project’s challenge therefore relies on the need to let the complex’s layout being defined by the nature rather than changing the land’s original state in order to cater the building. In a glance, this might seem rigid and restrictive. However, through thorough and creative thoughts, this project will prove that it is possible. Grasping tightly onto the concept of connecting the living souls with nature and creating intimacy between both, nature is being re-introduced as a gathering space not only for interactions between inhabitants, but also for the synergy with the nature; living and the non-living. This idea of synergy is based on Pallasmaa’s theory of metaphysical; connection between the mind and matter, substance and attribute, fact and value. This provision of space for togetherness and connectedness also relates back to the need of current world which is approaching the idea of classless society. This complex therefore is intended to cater people of all age, of single and small family, composing of one to three bedrooms units.

Another significant aspect of this housing complex is its uniformity of plans. This gives harmony totheoveralllayoutofthecomplex, andalsogiveseaseinconstructionsandmaterialproductions which will in turn, save costs and time. What meant by uniform is that the plan tend to be similar regardless of its orientation. In addition to that, extra elements or slight changes to the plans in regard of respective unit’s orientation is applied to suit each unit’s need of comfort and privacy. A uniformity in every apartment unit’s layout plan brought rigidity to the overall figure ground planning of the complex. This rigidity is countered by the introduction of a circular elements that are imposed onto the circulation blocks. The revolving stairs and circular lift cores bring inhabitants and visitors a different sets of experience through the articulation from the entrances into the apartment complex towards every apartment unit. The apartment complex try to bring balance between the horizontality and verticality in order to achieve a perfect blend between the built form and the nature, because after all, everything have to come back to nature. This, again, reaffirms the main concept idea of connecting with nature.

“Home is not only a house; it has its own identity and soul, in addition to its visible structure and quantifiable qualities.” Nowadays, housing in multi-unit dwellings is the most popular architectural typology, and this kind of building is rapidly pervaded due to huge urbanisations which occur in every countries. This progress leads to issues of lacking natural environment and space for people living in the multi-unit dwellings. The original site of the design in Randwick is beautiful with its sloping landscape and lots of natural trees. It is located in the context of an urbanized area with small houses and 3-4 storeys apartments. The site thus stands out as an isolated forest. The design therefore comes up with a primary thought of preserving the original natural environment on site to create a green village, a green home for people living. A medium density residential flat building could be seen as a small city, so I need to start with the thinking of creating intimacy, private as well as invitation for the community. Large spaces and gardens between buildings are then created to enhance these ideas. In addition, a long, straight uphill pathway will create a warm invitation, Zen and celebration for the community as well as the sloping landscape. Furthermore, Zig Zag façades produce beautiful shadows with the surrounding landscape and at the same time create meaning for building’s overall composition.

The concept of a village scheme suggests a more public way of living, an attempt to provide a choice between private and public living spaces. The proposal is to create an interweaving set of apartment modules that create spaces for the residents to move and live as if they are in a village. The scheme creates an interplay between public and private spaces and accentuate the slope of the site. This was achieved by creating modular apartments which were composed on the site to follow the movement of the contours from East to West. These apartment blocks are staggered which allows for maximum sunlight and ventilation penetration as well as creating spaces which can be used by the public, and spaces used only by certain residents. The concept of the village create a domestic and community driven atmosphere in the scheme, a metaphor for living harmoniously with one another and sharing the landscape. It also creates a welcoming greeting for guests and visitors. The way that the apartments follow the contours of the site creates a snake like movement, once again, enhancing the feeling of movement throughout the site.

“The home is a staging of personal memory, a complex mediator between intimacy and public life.” -Juhani Pallasmaa This development is in Randwick, a neighbourhood far removed from the city. The existing site is densely populated with trees and light rays could be seen shining through the canopies. Tranquillity and warmth are subtly portrayed within the site. The main idea of this project is to provide a retreat where we can escape from the city, abandon our public image from work and embrace our most intimate self together with nature. Our home not only shelters us from external environment but also from the chaotic life outside. It is important to keep us healthy both physically and mentally and a well-designed home will keep us in order. Site plan
The apartment design is developed in modular form to maximise planning efficiency. The apartments are orientated to north to take advantage of the winter sun while blocking the summer sun with their deep eaves. All apartments are served by ‘open’ corridor that is naturally lit, has view towards the landscape and fresh air circulating the lobby space. Each of the apartment blocks has their own distinct characters as they sit differently on the site, each describing different relationship between the built form, the nature and the human interaction. They are integrated into the landscape elegantly with a careful consideration to the existing trees and to the overall composition.

“Perpetual visual connections with the landscape, forms an intimate and harmonious relationship with the nature. The apartments design adapts the nature of the site which aims to conceptualize the interactions with the trees and landscape, evoking a sense of living in the forest and the trees seem like they are warmly embracing someone’s home. Apartments plan layout and openings position aim to articulate transparency and openness in order to achieve perpetual visual connections with the landscape, which ultimately forms an intimate and harmonious relationship with the nature. The design proposal achieved 88% of the apartments facing north and 69% of the total apartments provide cross ventilation. Raw material finishes such as off-form concrete, finishing brick, timber cladding and timber screens complement the natural atmosphere of the site context. Furthermore, the additional vegetation planting and landscape pathways are designed in consideration of extending and accentuating the unique features of the existing dense and large trees landscape of the site, offer the experience of stroll and halt which enables residence to appreciate the view of the landscape from different levels and angles. In short, the proposal seeks to provide urban retreat-like home experience which allows residence to escape from the hectic urban environment.

“Home is not merely an object or a building, but an expression of the personality, feelings and living quality of resident CONCEPT & IDEA The concept of this project is "architecure as power of life" and "private garden". It is aimed to create enjoyable space that residents would willing to stay and explore, and have excitement within the entire area, as if they are in playground.
CENTRAL GARDEN All buildings are built at the edges of the site so as to create a main central open area bounded with some visual blockages. Intergrated with the dedicated landscape, buildings and the level changes, a private garden is created. The central garden contains the greatest value and particular experience and view corridor to the inhabitants.
LANDSCAPE Artificial landscape is emphasizing the original natural landscape. Concrete retaining walls are used to create a stepped landscape which follow the flow of the contour. Most of the trees are remained in order to minimize the effect of the natural existences. The landscape become the important part of the central communal open space that gives richness to resident. The building footprint composition is also take reference to the landscape and contour.
