BEN MILLER HEAD COACH I 6TH YEAR AT UNCP
aving led the UNCP men’s basketball team to three consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 20 years, reigning Peach Belt Conference Co-Coach of the Year Ben Miller embarks on his sixth season at the helm of the Braves in 2013-14. Under Miller’s tutelage, the Braves have grabbed a series of superlatives, including records for NCAA Division II wins (22 in 2012-13), home victories (131 in 2012-13) and PBC victories (14 in 2012-13).The Braves have also grabbed their first two NCAA Tournament appearances following record-breaking seasons in 2010-11 and 2012-13. UNCP's back-toback-to-back winning seasons (18-12 in 2010-11, 1712 in 2011-12, 22-10 in 2012-13) is the first time a UNCP squad has accomplished that task since the last three seasons of the NAIA era in Pembroke (1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92). No stranger to national attention under Miller’s watch, UNCP has been a regular in the NCAA statistical rankings over the last two years, including the nation’s 19th-best scoring offense (81.2 points/game), 16th in assists (16.4 per game), a fifth place standing in rebounding margin (+10.2), one of the nation’s leading squads in steals per game (28th, 9.0/game) in 2012-13, as well as a 36th place ranking in both field goal percentage defense (40.9%) and blocked shots per game (4.2) in 2011-12. The excitement surrounding the program has continued to build as well. The Braves welcomed a PBC-leading 17,273 fans to the English E. Jones Center in 2012-13 - an average of nearly 1,800 fans per home contest. UNCP's 102-91 victory over PBC Regular Season Champion USC Aiken in the regular season finale attracted a school record 3,045 fans, while its 91-68 victory over Francis Marion in early February brought more than 2,500 fans through the turnstiles of its home arena. Last season also produced a number of individual superlatives for the program as well. Shahmel Brackett became the first three-time all-conference performer in school history, while George Blakeney etched his name in the record book as one of two players in program history to take home first team all-conference nods. Brackett (1,623 points) finished his career ranked fifth in UNCP history and sixth among the PBC’s all-time leading scorers, while Blakeney (1,263 points) ranks among the program’s top
H
20 scorers in the last 50 years. Blakeney also ranked fifth, nationally, with 17 double-doubles in 2012-13, and was among the nation's top 15 leaders in rebounds per game (9.9) as well. The future looks bright for Braves Basketball as underclassmen received several awards for the Braves as well. Quamain Rose, earned PBC Freshman of the Year Award. Freshman Forward Brandon Winford was named to the PBC All-Tournament Team, being one of the only freshman in conference history to do so. Sophomore Forward Ben Jacobs received the Elite 15 Award, which is given to the top student-athlete in their respective sport; Ben currently holds a 3.98 GPA. The Braves also tallied their highest team GPA in recent program history with a 2.83 for the season and a fall GPA of 2.93. Miller will be entering his sixth season as head coach at UNC Pembroke and his 23rd year overall in college coaching. Prior to his arrival at UNC Pembroke, he spent several seasons with some of the nation’s most elite head coaches. Miller came to Pembroke following a four-year stint (2004-08) as both an assistant coach and associate head coach for Missouri State where he helped lead the Bears to a cumulative 80-49 record, including a trio of postseason National Invitation Tournament appearances, under head coach Barry Hinson. During Miller’s time at Missouri State, they registered 22 wins in 2005-06 and 2006-07, while tallying a second place finish in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2005-06 and a third place finish in the latter. Missouri State had an average RPI of 36 from 2005-2007, finishing as high as 21 in 2006. Prior to his stint at MSU, Miller served 10 seasons on the coaching staff at Kansas under Roy Williams and current head coach Bill Self. Miller joined the Jayhawk staff on a full time basis in 1995 after completing his doctorate in sport psychology at the University of Kansas. Miller was elevated to an assistant coach in 1998 when Matt Doherty departed Lawrence, Kan., to become head coach at Notre Dame. Kansas appeared in 10 NCAA tournaments during Miller's time in Lawrence, including three Final Four appearances, two regional final (Elite Eight)
showings and one Sweet 16 appearance. Along the way, the Jayhawks compiled a 258-59 win-loss record and won six Big 8/Big 12 titles and four conference tournament championships. During that same time frame, KU achieved nine listings in the final Top 25 polls, including six top five rankings. During his 22-year coaching career, Miller has been involved in the grooming of 21 all-conference players and 32 academic all-conference honorees. Those numbers also include eight all-Americans, five conference players of the year and eight conference freshman/newcomer of the year laurels. A basketball player and team captain at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Miller graduated from Luther in 1991 with BA in Psychology before graduating from Northern Iowa with a MA in Physical Education in 1992. Miller completed his PhD in Sport Psychology at the University of Kansas in 1995. Miller and his wife, Heather, have two children, Charlie and Betsie. Heather is a native of New Mexico and is a Luther graduate as well. Miller is the son of long-time Division I head coach Eldon Miller who compiled a 568-419 record in his 36-year coaching career that included stops at Wittenberg (OH), Western Michigan, Ohio State and Northern Iowa.

BRAVES COACHING STAFF BEN THOMPSON
ELDON MILLER
Assistant Coach/3rd Season
Assistant Coach/6th Season
seasoned coaching veteran after serving on the staffs at both NCAA Division II member Saint Leo, as well as a brief stint at Virginia Tech, Ben Thompson enters his third year as an assistant coach with the UNCP men’s basketball program in 2013-14. UNCP has achieved success never seen before since Thompson joined the staff prior to the 2011-12 campaign. The Braves have recorded the second and third leg of back-to-back-to-back winning seasons during his tenure – the first time that feat has been accomplished in more than 20 years. Statistically, the Braves have posted notable achievements on a national level over the last two years as well, including a fifthplace finish in rebounding margin in 2012-13, as well as ranking among the nation’s top 20 teams in scoring offense (81.2 points/game). Thompson has also been instrumental in the public relations efforts for the team as well. UNCP hosted its own version of Midnight Madness for the first time in 2011-12, and the event attracted more than 1,000 spectators to the English E. Jones Center this past season. The team’s success, coupled with Thompson-led promotion efforts, was instrumental in helping Braves lead the PBC in total attendance last season as well. Thompson came to UNCP following a one-year stint as the video coordinator and assistant to the head coach at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. There he was charged with assisting in-game and practice preparation, running the film exchange program, assisting with travel operations and additional duties that involved coaching clinics, on-campus recruiting visits, and being director of camps. During the 2009-10 season, Thompson served as an assistant coach at Saint Leo, a NCAA Division II institution that competes in the Sunshine State Conference in Saint. Leo, Fla. He also served a stint as Director of Basketball Operations at his alma mater,Virginia Tech, in 2008-09. He is a 2006 graduate of Virginia Tech where he earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies along with minors in residential property management and leadership. He earned his master's degree in education with a specialization in sports promotion from Virginia Tech in 2007.

storied coach with significant experience at the NCAA Division I level, Eldon Miller begins his 42nd season as a collegiate coach, as well as his sixth alongside his son, Ben, as an assistant coach for the Braves. After earning four varsity letters as a player at Wittenberg, Miller moved to the bench as an assistant coach for one year before assuming the head position at the tender age of 23. His first team posted a 26-2 record, won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and advanced all the way to the NCAA College Division championship game before losing by two points to South Dakota State. It was the start of an illustrious 36-year coaching career. After guiding the Tigers to four more OAC titles through 1970, Miller moved on to Western Michigan from 1971-76, Ohio State from 1977-86 and Northern Iowa from 1987-98. At Western Michigan, he produced the school's first Mid-American Conference championship in 1976, and at Ohio State, four of his 10 Buckeye teams advanced to the NCAA Division I Tournament and the 1986 squad captured the National Invitational Tournament title. While at Northern Iowa, he led the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament victory - a monumental upset of third-seeded Missouri in the 1990 NCAA Tournament. A native of Gnadenhutten, Ohio, Miller remains third in Wittenberg school history with 142 coaching victories and is tied for second with five conference titles. Miller, the second of five straight Wittenberg men's basketball coaches to go straight to NCAA Division I, was inducted into Wittenberg's Athletics Hall of Honor in 1986. He would later be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. His overall record is 568–419 and 5–6 in NCAA Tournament games. His record includes 142 wins at Wittenberg, 86 at Western Michigan, 176 at Ohio State and 164 at Northern Iowa. He also mentored 13 eventual NBA Draft picks.

JOHN HASKINS HEAD COACH I 24TH YEAR AT UNCP
aving worn many hats during his previous 23 years in the UNC Pembroke athletics department, John Haskins embarks on his 24th year in Pembroke in 2013-14, including his 10th as the head coach of the Lady Braves. Haskins also spent 10 years as the UNCP men’s basketball coach as well. Haskins stepped into the collegiate coaching world as an assistant men’s basketball coach for former athletics director Dan Kenney from 1989-92. During that stretch, the Black & Gold compiled a 63-29 (.684) clip, including an 18-13 record in 1989-90 that culminated in the Carolinas Conference title. That stretch produced five all-conference selections, as well as four all-district and a pair of NAIA all-American nods. Haskins took over as head coach of the men’s team in 1992 following Kenney’s departure to Winthrop and was integral in UNCP’s transition over to the NCAA Division II ranks. Over the next 10 years, the Black & Gold produced seven all-conference players, one Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year selection (Frank Smith, 1993-94) and a pair of all-PBC Tournament laurels. Rosendo “Russ” Bryden became UNCP’s first National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) all-America selection following a 1995-96 campaign that saw the Braves reach the 15win plateau. Haskins compiled more than 100 wins (105-164) in 10 seasons as the men’s coach and helped the Braves to three winning seasons. He earned PBC Coach of the Year accolades after his final season as the men’s head coach in 2001-02. As the skipper of the men’s golf team from 2002-05, Haskins helped lead the Braves to top 5 finishes at five different events, including medalist honors at both the 2002 and 2004 Lacey Gane Invitational. In his first season as head coach, he mentored Matt Drye
H
to a spot in the NCAA postseason, while helping a pair of golfers – Greg Dobbins and Mark Long – to an NCAA postseason berth in 2004. The men’s golf team also concluded the 2004-05 campaign with a No. 34 national ranking. Haskins has achieved unparalleled levels of success as head coach of the women’s basketball program in Pembroke, however. The last nine seasons have produced a lion’s shar of individual recognition, including nine allconference selections, seven all-state honorees and seven PBC weekly award winners. Former UNCP standout Danielle Richardson earned all-region and all-America honors following Haskins’ first season at the helm, while nine players have earned PBC All-Academic Team distinction over the last five seasons as well. Haskins has led the Lady Braves to four winning seasons, including a 2004-05 campaign that saw them turn in an 18-10 mark en route to the PBC North Division title. He skippered his squad to a school record 12 league victories en route to a 16-12 record in 2011-12 as well. Having compiled nearly 110 wins (108-115) already, Haskins needs just five more victories to tie Lalon Jones (1984-89) as the all-time winningest coach in UNCP women’s basketball history. An all-conference player at Lees-McRae, Haskins averaged more than 15 points as a sophomore for the Bobcats. He made the move to UNC Wilmington after earning his associate’s degree in Banner Elk and averaged better than 8.0 points and nearly 3.0 rebounds per game over his last two collegiate playing seasons and helped lead the Seahawks to a cumulative 38-18 record. He captained the Seahawks to a 19-10 clip as a senior. Haskins earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from UNC Wilmington in
1980, and went on to earn his master’s degree in education from Appalachian State in 1981. Haskins and his wife, Kelly, have two children, Morgan and Connor. Morgan recently earned her bachelor’s degree from East Carolina and Connor is currently a recordbreaking placekicker on the football team at UNCP.
The Haskins File Has compiled 213 wins as the men’s and women’s basketball coach at UNCP ssistant men’s coach under Dan Kenney at UNCP (1989-92) • Braves were 63-39 during that span • School record 27 wins, .844 (27-5) winning percentage in 1990-91 • 1989-90 Carolinas Conference champions UNCP men’s basketball head coach (1992-2002) • Ranks 4th all-time with 105 wins UNCP men’s golf head coach (2002-04) • Produced three NCAA Regional selections UNCP women’s basketball head coach (2004-Present) • Ranks second all-time with 108 wins

LADY BRAVES COACHING STAFF KAPICA DAVIS Assistant Coach/8th Season apica Davis enters her eighth season as assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. After a two-year stint with the Lady Braves as a graduate assistant, Davis completed her Master of Arts degree in Physical Education at UNCP in May of 2004 and has remained an important asset to the program. Alongside women’s coach John Haskins, Davis helped lead the 2004-05 UNCP squad to an 18-10 overall record, including a 10-6 mark in the highly-competitive Peach Belt Conference. In just her first year as a full-time member of the Pembroke staff, the Lady Braves captured the program’s first-ever PBC North Division championship and produced two all-conference performers, including the conference Player of the Year. The Pittsboro, Ind. native is a 2002 graduate of DePauw University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Performance with an emphasis in Sports Science. While at DePauw, Davis lettered in basketball for four years and helped lead her squad to four consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. The Lady Tigers made two trips to the NCAA tournament during her tenure and, in 2001-02, finished third in the nation. In addition to coaching experience gained at Pembroke, Davis served one season as head coach for Indy West AAU’s 16 and under girls’ basketball team in Plainfield, Ind. She has also worked as an instructor at several camps, including those held by the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College. Having instructed several physical education activity classes, Davis also serves as a lecturer in UNCP’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department.
