Pembroke Ranked Fourth in Preseason Poll For Immediate Release: August 12, 2009 AUGUSTA, GA – In a poll voted on by thee Peach Belt Conference’s head coaches, thee UNCP women’s soccer team was picked to o finish fourth this season out of the PBC’ss eleven teams, it was announced this afternoon.. The Lady Braves brought in a total of 73 votes in n the coaches poll, falling only eight points behind d third place Armstrong Atlantic, while holdingg off fifth place Montevallo by 14 points. Coachess were not permitted to vote for their own teams.. First place went undisputed to Columbus Statee whose Lady Cougars picked up all 10 avail-able first-place votes to lock down the poll’ss top spot for the fourth consecutive year. Co-lumbus State won their fourth-straight PBC C Championship and third-straight PBC Tour-nament title in 2008, setting conference re-cords for most consecutive titles won in both.. 3 The Lady Cougars were ranked as high as #3 in the nation last season, finishing 21-4-1 afterr advancing to the NCAA national quarterfinals.. The Lady Braves, who N were ranked as high as #6 in the NSCAA w top 25 last season, return six starters from to th their 2008 team including PBC Freshman of the Year Britney Joiner. UNCP finished o their record-breaking season with a 19-3-1 th rrecord and fell to #18 Carson-Newman, 1 1-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Although they aadvanced to the quarterfinals, Columbus S State could not carry their momentum fr from their win over Carson-Newman aand did not advance any further in the tournament, losing 1-0 to West Florida. to T The NSCAA conducts the most widely rrecognized national and regional soccer rranking system in the country as a service to the general public and its members. The in intent of the rankings program is to stimulate greater interest in men’s and women’s la ssoccer at the intercollegiate and intersscholastic levels and to recognize those p programs that are enjoying remarkable ssuccess on a regional and national level.

NCAA Recruiting

UNC Pembroke is committed to absolute

compliance with all NCAA and Peach Belt Conference rules and regulations. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental principle of NCAA legislation. It requires each institution to conduct its intercollegiate athletics programs in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This responsibility includes ensuring that coaches, staff, and other groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable rules. As a result, it is important for prospects, fans, and alumni to have some understanding of the principles governing college athletics. Below are a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic boosters.

NCAA DEFINITIONS REPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICS INTERESTS (BOOSTER)

A “representative of athletics interests” (booster) is any individual or group that has ever: •Been a member of an organization promoting UNC Pembroke athletics. •Contributed to the Athletics Department or its booster organizations. •Assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospective student-athletes. •Provided benefits (e.g. employment) to prospective student-athletes, enrolled studentathletes or their family members. •Otherwise promoted the UNC Pembroke athletics program. Keep in mind that it is very easy to meet one or more of these criteria and once you become an athletics representative, you retain this status FOREVER!

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE

A “prospect” is a high school student that has started classes for the ninth grade and also any junior college student. A student that has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the student receives any benefits that the institution does not provide to all prospective students in general. An individual remains a prospect until he or she starts classes at UNCP or reports for practice, whichever occurs first.

STUDENT-ATHLETE

A “student-athlete” is a student whose enrollment was solicited by an athletics staff member with the expectation that the student would participate in intercollegiate athletics.A student not solicited by an athletics staff member becomes a student-athlete when he or she joins an intercollegiate team or reports for practice.

RECRUITING

“Recruiting” is any solicitation of a prospect or the prospect’s family by an authorized

institutional staff member for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment at UNCP and participation in athletics. Athletics representatives may not be involved in the recruitment of prospects except as outlined in the following section.

CONTACT

A “contact” is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs.

GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS FOR BOOSTERS

•A booster may not contact a prospect, prospect’s family, friends, coach or school administrator in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect. •A booster may not expend funds to entertain or provide transportation for a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends. •A booster may not write, make phone calls, or otherwise communicate with a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends for recruiting purposes. •A booster may not contribute funds to a prospect’s high school or club team as a form ofrecruiting inducement or if solicited to do so by a collegiate coach. •A booster may attend a prospect’s athletic events without contacting the prospect or his/her family. •A booster may send recommendation letters and newspaper clippings about a prospect in their area to UNCP’s coaches. •A booster may continue a pre-existing relationship with a prospect and his/her family as long as the relationship pre-dated the prospect’s recruitment or notoriety as an athlete and the nature of the relationship is not enhanced after his/her notoriety as an athlete. Such a relationship may not be for recruiting purposes. •A booster may host a current student-athlete or an entire team in their home for a meal, but only on an occasional basis. •A booster may provide a job for a student-athlete, but the job responsibilities must be legitimate and the pay commensurate for the task.

GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA BENEFITS

An “extra benefit” is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or athletics representative to provide a prospect, a student-athlete or his or her family with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Boosters may not provide any special arrangement considered to be an extra benefit. Examples of extra benefits include, but are not limited to: •Gifts of money, awards or other tangible items.

•Use of vehicles or payment of transportation costs incurred by prospect, prospect’s relatives or friends. •Free or reduced housing arrangements. •Promise of employment after graduation or employment of prospect’s relatives or friends. •Special discounts or payment arrangements.

RECRUITING GUIDELINES FOR PROSPECTS LETTERS & NOTES

Coaches may begin to write notes and letters to prospects beginning September 1 of their junior year in high school (September 15 after sophomore year for men’s basketball prospects). PHONE CALLS •Prospect Calling: A coach may receive a call initiated by a prospect and paid for by the prospect at any time, including the prospect’s freshman or sophomore years. Prospects may call coaches collect at any time. •Football: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his senior year. •Men’s Basketball: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his senior year. •Women’s Basketball: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding her senior year. •Other Sports: Coaches may call a prospect at their discretion during a contact period after June 15 in the summer preceding his or her senior year.

UNOFFICIAL VISITS

There are no limits on the number of unofficial (unpaid) visits to UNCP a prospect may make and no age restriction on who may make unofficial visits. At each unofficial visit, a prospect may receive three (3) complimentary admissions to a home athletic event. No other expenses may be paid by UNCP. At certain times of the year, unofficial visits are prohibited so please coordinate your visit with the coaching staff.

OFFICIAL VISITS

A prospect may only make a total of five official (paid) visits and only one official visit to UNCP. A prospect may not make an official visit until the first day of classes of their senior year (January 1 of junior year for men’s basketball prospects). NCAA History & Values

It was the flying wedge, football’s major

offense in 1905, that spurred the formation of the NCAA. The game’s rugged nature, typified by mass formations and gang tackling, resulted in numerous injuries and deaths and prompted many institutions to discontinue the sport. Others urged that football be reformed or abolished from intercollegiate athletics. President Theodore Roosevelt summoned college athletics leaders to two White House conferences to encourage such reforms. In early December 1905, Chancellor Henry M. MacCracken of New York University convened a meeting of 13 institutions to initiate changes in football-playing rules. At a subsequent meeting December 28 in New York City, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) was founded by 62 members. The IAAUS officially was constituted March 31, 1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910. For several years, the NCAA was a discussion group and rules-making body; but in 1921, the first NCAA national championship was held: the National Collegiate Track and Field Championships. Gradually, more rules committees were formed and more championships were held. A series of crises brought the NCAA to a crossroads after World War II. The “Sanity Code” - adopted to establish guidelines for recruiting and financial aid - failed to curb abuses involving student-athletes. Postseason football games were multiplying rapidly. Member institutions were increasingly concerned about the effects of unrestricted television on football attendance. The complexity and scope of these problems and the growth in membership and championships demonstrated the increasing need for full-time professional leadership. In 1951, Walter Byers, who previously had served as a part-time executive assistant, was named executive director. A national headquarters was established in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1952. A program to control live television of football games was approved, the annual Convention delegated enforcement powers to the Association’s Council and legislation was adopted governing postseason bowl games. The Association’s membership was divided into three legislative and competitive divisions - I, II and III - in 1973. Five years later, Division I members voted to create subdivisions I-A and I-AA (subsequently renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Football Championship Subdivision) in football. The NCAA began administering women’s athletics programs in 1980 when Divisions II and III established 10 championships for 1981-

82. A year later, the historic 75t Convention adopted an extensive governance plan to include women’s athletics programs, services and representation. The delegates expanded the women’s championships program with the addition of 19 events. On August 1, 1997, the NCAA implemented a change in its governance structure that provides greater autonomy for each membership division and more control by the presidents of member colleges and universities. Walter Byers retired October 1, 1987, after 36 years as the Association’s executive director. He was replaced by University of Virginia Athletics Director Richard D. Schultz, who resigned in 1993. He was replaced by University of Arizona Athletics Director Cedric Dempsey, who led the Association beginning in 1994 and served as president until December 2002. Today, the national office staff of more than 380 employees based in Indianapolis is led by President Myles Brand. Brand assumed office in January 2003 after serving as president of Indiana University, Bloomington. Core Ideology The NCAA’s core ideology consists of two notions: core purpose - the organization’s reason for being - and core values - essential and enduring principles that guide an organization. Core Purpose

and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. Core Values The Association - through its member institutions, conferences and national office staff - shares a belief in and commitment to: • The collegiate model of athletics in which students participate as an avocation, balancing their academic, social and athletics experiences. • The highest levels of integrity and sportsmanship. • The pursuit of excellence in both academics and athletics. • The supporting role that intercollegiate athletics plays in the higher education mission and in enhancing the sense of community and strengthening the identity of member institutions. • An inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and career opportunities for coaches and administrators from diverse backgrounds. • Respect for institutional autonomy and philosophical differences. • Presidential leadership of intercollegiate athletics at the campus, conference and national levels.

2008, The University of North Carolina at Pembroke women’s soccer team had its best season in school history.The Braves went 19-3-1, advancing to the finals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, losing to Columbus State in overtime and then making it to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournamentbefore falling to Carson-Newman, 1-0.

at ACC basketball, everyone knows who was recruited as well as who’s returning and who was lost. Here, you don’t know about recruits. Given our losses, I think being picked No. 4 is fair. “That being said, I do think we’ll have another year where we compete for a conference championship. When it gets down to it, it really doesn’t matter. If you want to make it bulletin board material, go ahead. But it doesn’t matter.” The rebuilding job for the Braves starts in goal, where freshman newcomer Rea Segoviano replaces Beverly, who played every minute of UNCP’s 23 matches last season. “Rea played a half (in a scrimmage at Belmont Abbey last week),” said Andersson. “she is raw and athletic.”

Now, UNCP must replace five starters, including All-American goalie Whitney Beverly and All-American forward Melanie Cobb. Add in the expectations that come with a No. 21 preseason national ranking — another first for the Braves — and it’s not too surprising UNCP was picked fourth in the Peach Belt Conference’s preseason poll.

The defensive corps is led by a trio of returnees, senior Heather Jones and juniors Sheena Mature and Brittany Greaves. Jones started 22 of UNCP’s 23 matches, Mature appeared in all 23 matches (making nine starts) and Greaves was a starter in 21 of her 22 appearances for the Braves in 2008. She added two goals and six assists to earn second-team All-Conference honors.

UNCP head coach Lars Andersson said that while the preseason poll’s assessment might be reasonable, it won’t stop him from having high expectations for the upcoming season.

A newcomer to watch in the back is freshman Fanny Forsman, a Swedish recruit who has played at the youth national level in her home country.

Leading the way is junior Faye Corbett, a first-team AllConference pick who had four goals and eight assists on 34 shots last season. She’s not afraid to be physical, as she was second on the team with 23 fouls. Also back is junior center midfielder Sam Dunn. Like Corbett, Dunn started all 23 matches for UNCP last year and while she did net three goals on 34 shots, Dunn was also a physical presence with a team-leading 24 fouls. With Corbett on the right and Dunn holding down the middle, the left midfield position is one where sevral players could see time. Two of

She’ll likely be joined up top by another Swedish freshman, Anna Svensson, to start with and if either needs a rest, expect Womack or freshman Ashley Anctil to enter the lineup. “Anna Svensson is a big, strong kid who makes great runs, gets behind the backs and stretches the field for us,” said Anderssson. “Ashley Anctil was a player that I was hoping to develop over the course of this season, but she’s getting better every training session. I thought she was more of a long-term prospect, but she’ll see time this year. (Womack) is another player we’ll put at forward and she can be effective up there, too.” .

aving made his mark as the only coach in the history of the UNCP women’s soccer program, Lars Andersson enters his ninth season as the coach of the Braves, compiling a 277-92-14 clip in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Currently holding a 87-56-11 record as the UNCP gaffer, Andersson has led the Black and Gold to final listings in the NSCAA Southeast Region rankings in five out of the last six seasons as well as an appearance in the second round of the 2008 NCAA DII Tournament. The 2003 Peach Belt Conference coach of the year has mentored a trio of PBC Freshman of the Year recipients, 10 all-conference players, six all-region players and three all-Americans. In the classroom, the Braves have produced one PBC Female Student-Athlete of the Year honoree, while also sending 40 student-athletes to the league’s presidential honor roll. Prior to his time in Pembroke, Andersson served as the women’s soccer head coach at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky., as well as the men’s coach at Reinhardt College in Waleska, Ga. In his two-year stint at Cumberland, Andersson coached two all-Americans, a pair of all-region players, 11 all-conference players, four academic all-Americans and 16 academic all-conference recipients. On his way to 1999 Mid-South Conference coach of the year accolades, he also led the Indians to the league’s regular season title, as well as a No. 14 national ranking. While compiling a 62-25-3 record as coach of the Reinhardt men’s team, An-

Following the completion of his freshman year at Austin Peay State, he returned to his native land to fulfill his duties as an army ranger in the Swedish Military before returning back to the U.S. to complete his education. Andersson graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cumberland College in 1994 and earned his master’s degree from Union College in 1998. Andersson and the former Carla Kehrier of Plymouth, Mich., are the proud parents of three daughters – Aspen (7), Isabella (5) and Emelia (3) and are expecting another child in November. auline Privitera enters her third season as an assistant coach with the Lady Braves after a standout playing career at Salem International and a brief stint in the Women’s Premiere Soccer League. Privitera was a starter at center midfield for the Tigers for four seasons earning all-conference honors in each year in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2004 and 2005, she was named team captain at SIU. Privitera received the Leadership Award in 2004 and was named the team’s most valuable player in 2005, her final year with SIU. That year saw Privitera score six goals while also tallying 11 assists, leading the WVIAC in assists per game in only 10 contests.

After graduation, she travelled to Miami, Fla., to play in the WPSL for the now defunct Miami Surf. While serving as a starter for the Surf, Privitera worked as an instructor at the Hurricane Soccer Camps for the University of Miami and Coral Springs Christian Academy. In the Fall of 2006 she returned to Salem International as a graduate assistant for the women’s soccer team. A native of Toronto, Canada, Privitera graduated from SIU in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and a minor in Psychology. She received her master’s degree in Education in July 2007, completing student teaching terms at the elementary and high school levels to earn her degree. Privitera is currently working on her 2nd master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science at UNCP.

Beginning his first year as a member of the UNC Pembroke athletic department, Joey Hannant is a nationally-certified strength coach that has been charged with the conditioning of the student-athletes in all 16 varsity sports for the Braves. He assumed his current position as UNCP’s head strength and conditioning coach in August, 2009. A native of Griggsville, Ill., Hannant began his career in strength and conditioning as a student at Western Illinois, before honing his skills as a coach when he undertook an internship on the strength and conditioning staff at Iowa where he assisted with strength and conditioning training with the Hawkeyes’ football team. Following his brief stint in Iowa City, Iowa, Hannant moved on to a graduate assistant position at The Citadel, working directly with the Bulldogs’ volleyball, cross country and cheerleading squads. Prior to his current stint in Pembroke, Hannant spent seven months as a sports performance coach at Velocity Sports Performance in Lakeland, Fla., implementing sports performance training protocols that emphasized speed development for athletes ages 8-24. While with the organization, Hannant was also charged with designing programs to help athletes achieve tangible results that were continuously updated with the help of world-renowned sports performance coaches whose backgrounds included the coaching of numerous elite and professional athletes, collegiate national champions, and all-Americans. A 2005 graduate of Western Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, Hannant completed his graduate work in the same field at The Citadel in 2007. He is certified through the National Strength Coaches Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and through USA Weightlifting as a certified weightlifting club coach. He currently resides in Lumberton.

A recent graduate of Indiana University and a former collegiate athlete, Carlie Boese (pronounced Bay-see) begins her first year in athletic administration as an assistant in the athletic media relations office. She will serve as the primary media contact for the sports of women’s soccer, cross country, women’s basketball and track & field. Boese will also handle the day-to-day athletic media relations duties of UNCP’s cheerleading and dance squads. A three-time all-America scholar-athlete at Ernest W. Seaholm High School in her native Bloomfield, Mich., Boese was a two-time captain for the water polo team, while also serving as a senior captain for SHS’s swimming team as well. Her athletic talents would land her an athletic scholarship at IU where she excelled immediately as a coxswain on the Hoosier rowing team. In just her first year on the varsity level in 2006, she helped the second novice eight to a school record seven victories, while also coxing the first novice eight to wins over Cincinnati and Dayton. A recipient of the Indiana Faculty award, as well as Phi Beta Kappa and Michigan Merit laurels, Boese was also very active in her Kappa Alpha Theta sorority where she served as a member of the Finance and Administrative Focus Group, while also competing as a part of the chapter’s competitive cycling team. In addition, she was an integral part of IU’s Dance Marathon which made its mark as just the second student-run organization to raise more than $1 million in donations. Boese earned her degree in sports broadcasting from Indiana in May. The daughter of Cindy and Tom Boese has two sisters, Darby and Bailey, and one brother, Cameron.

Beginning his first year as a member of the UNC Pembroke athletic training staff, Michael Blackburn is a nationally-certified and state-licensed trainer who oversees the athletic training department at UNCP. He is specifically responsible for, and handles the day-to-day operations of, the prevention and care of injuries for the Braves football and wrestling teams.

Skye Livermore is in her second year as an assistant athletic trainier at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She has been charged with the day-to-day responsibilities of women’s soccer, women’s basketball and tennis.

Blackburn has spent the previous two seasons as an assistant athletic trainer at Western Illinois University where he was responsible for the daily medical healthcare of the men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf teams. He was charged with overseeing one of WIU’s athletic training rooms, while also serving as a mentor for six graduate assistant athletic trainers. He also served as an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology at WIU.

Livermore has been in Pembroke working as a graduate assistant since 2005. As a G.A. for the Braves, Livermore has worked with softball, track and field and volleyball.

A native of Medford, Wisc., Blackburn first got involved in athletic training as an undergraduate at Winona State (Minn.), where he completed a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program. While with the Warriors, Blackburn undertook athletic training responsibilities with the women’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball programs. In serving in those capacities, he assisted with the treatments and rehabilitation of other Winona State student-athletes as well. Following his graduation from WSU, Blackburn applied for and received a graduate assistant athletic training position at East Tennessee State University where he was responsible for the daily medical coverage of the Bucs women’s soccer, women’s track & field and cross country squads. He also assisted with the implementation of a comprehensive medical healthcare program for all 16 Division I sports. His longest-tenured job would come under the auspices of Ferris State (Mich.) where he was charged with the management of eight intercollegiate sports, including both men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and the track & field programs from 2002-07. While in Big Rapids, he managed the daily operations of one of FSU’s athletic training rooms and directed studentathlete orthopedic clinics and vision screening schedules. He also coordinated medical coverage for the 2005 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships, as well as the 2006 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Prior to her time in Pembroke, Livermore spent two years at Fayetteville State University (2003-05) as an assistant athletic trainer. She has also logged an additional year in the training room at Methodist College (now Methodist University) as an assistant athletic trainer. Livermore completed her undergraduate double major in athletic training education and French at New Mexico State University in 2002 where she earned Crimson Scholar honors. In 2007, she earned her master’s degree from UNC Pembroke in public administration with an emphasis in healthcare. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Livermore currently resides in Fort Bragg with her husband of six years SFC James Brasher.

In addition to his duties at the college and university levels, Blackburn also logged time as the certified athletic trainer at the USA Bantam Hockey Camp in 2003, as well as the coordinator of medical coverage for the 2004 Michigan High School Sports Association Basketball Regional in 2004. A board certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association, Blackburn is certified in CPR, as well as in American Red Cross First Aid. Blackburn received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Winona State in 2000 and his master’s of arts certificate in physical education from East Tennessee State in 2002. He currently resides in Lumberton.
