COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH

LACINDA MELANSON TAMPA, 2004 (910) 521-6308 • lacinda.melanson@uncp.edu Having carried success with her throughout her career as both a coach and a player, Lacinda Melanson takes on her first stint as a collegiate head coach in Pembroke after being named UNCP's ninth head softball coach on Aug. 7, 2008. Melanson comes to Pembroke following a four-year stint (2005-08) as both a graduate assistant and assistant coach at Louisiana-Monroe where she helped lead the Warhawks to more than 85 wins – including a 12-game improvement after just two years on the ULM staff. "We found a dynamic coach in Lacinda Melanson - a former Division II all-American and an experienced Division I coach," said UNCP athletic director Dan Kenney. "Lacinda is the daughter of a college softball coach and understands the work ethic needed to be successful. Most importantly, she has proven that she cares about the welfare of her studentathletes." Melanson, a Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, played four seasons (2001-04) at the University of Tampa where she was a three-time all-conference second baseman for the Spartans. During her four years in Tampa, she helped pace UT to a cumulative 123-69 (.641) record, one Sunshine State Conference title and three NCAA postseason appearances. She was also a member of three of Tampa’s four 30-win squads, including pacing the Spartans to a then-school record 35 victories in 2002. “UNCP is very fortunate to have someone with Lacinda’s knowledge of the game and tremendous values,” said Tampa head coach Leslie Kanter. “She has a lot to give to the athletes and to the UNCP program.”

32

Melanson enjoyed a phenomenal junior season that saw her record a team- and career-best .354 (46-for-130) batting average to go along with 12 extra-base hits (1 HR) 23 RBI and 18 runs scored. Her numbers would earn her second team all-American and first team all-region honors, as well as the first of two consecutive first team all-SSC accolades. Named “Major of the Year” and “Outstanding Education Graduate” (3.57 cumulative grade point average) at the conclusion of her senior year, she also served a stint as captain of the UT softball squad and was a co-leader of a Bible study for athletes with Campus Crusade for Christ. Following her standout playing career, she made the transition to the coaching world as a graduate assistant at Louisiana-Monroe and the effects of her tutelage were felt almost immediately. The Warhawks, who recorded just 13 wins the year prior to her arrival (2004), would flirt with the .500 mark during her first season as a full-time assistant (2006) en route to 27 victories on the shoulders of record-breaking offensive numbers. ULM would, again, churn out school-best offensive statistics the following season in its first year of competition in the Sun Belt Conference. She has also gained coaching stints on the staffs of both the Davie (Fla.) Power softball organization and the Gold Coast Hurricanes (Plantation, Fla.). She served as an assistant coach with both organizations, including her stint with the power under her father and current St. Thomas head coach Jeff Norman. Melanson earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Tampa in 2004 and her master’s degree in kinesiology from ULM in 2005. She married her husband, Justin, in March of 2008.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UNC PEMBROKE SPORTS INFORMATION Tuesday, January 16, 2007 LRA FIELD RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association, in correlation with Turface Athletics, has awarded UNC Pembroke’s Lumberton Radiological Associates (LRA) Softball Field with the College Field Maintenance Award for 2006. The award is given annually to one national college winner, one national high school winner, and up to eight regional winners. The NFCA and Turface joined together to offer softball coaches and groundskeepers a chance to be recognized for outstanding field maintenance. Winners are chosen by a panel of independent judges made up of grounds maintenance professionals selected by the NFCA and Turface.

UNCP’s Dave Tolar (right) receives the NFCA/Turface National Collegiate Field of the Year Trophy.

The NFCA is a professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play. Besides offering special services to members, the NFCA works with USA Today in producing polls for NCAA Division I and high school softball. In addition, NCAA Division II and Division III polls are produced. The NFCA also conducts collegiate tournament competitions, as well as recruiting camps throughout the nation. An annual NFCA National Convention is held every December. Turface Athletics, a branch of Profile Products, has been used on more sports fields than any other brand for over forty years. Those include the 2004 Olympic Fields, the Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field, the Washington Redskins’ FedEx Field, and thousands of others.

NCAA COMPLIANCE UNC Pembroke is committed to absolute compliance with all NCAA and Peach Belt Conference rules and regulations. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental principle of NCAA legislation. It requires each institution to conduct its intercollegiate athletics programs in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This responsibility includes ensuring that coaches, staff, and other groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable rules. As a result, it is important for prospects, fans, and alumni to have some understanding of the principles governing college athletics. Below are a few definitions and rules that apply to all athletic boosters. NCAA DEFINITIONS REPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICS INTERESTS (BOOSTER) A “representative of athletics interests” (booster) is any individual or group that has ever: • Been a member of an organization promoting UNC Pembroke athletics. • Contributed to the Athletics Department or its booster organizations. • Assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospective student-athletes. • Provided benefits (e.g. employment) to prospective student-athletes, enrolled student-athletes or their family members. • Otherwise promoted the UNC Pembroke athletics program. Keep in mind that it is very easy to meet one or more of these criteria and once you become an athletics representative, you retain this status FOREVER! PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE A “prospect” is a high school student that has started classes for the ninth grade and also any junior college student. A student that has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the student receives any benefits that the institution does not provide to all prospective students in general. An individual remains a prospect until he or she starts classes at UNCP or reports for practice, whichever occurs first. STUDENT-ATHLETE A “student-athlete” is a student whose enrollment was solicited by an athletics staff member with the expectation that the student would participate in intercollegiate athletics.A student not solicited by an athletics staff member becomes a student-athlete when he or she joins an intercollegiate team or reports for practice. RECRUITING “Recruiting” is any solicitation of a prospect or the prospect’s family by an authorized institutional staff member for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment at UNCP and participation in athletics. Athletics representatives may not be involved in the recruitment of prospects except as outlined in the following section. CONTACT A “contact” is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs.

GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS FOR BOOSTERS • A booster may not contact a prospect, prospect’s family, friends, coach or school administrator in an attempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect. • A booster may not expend funds to entertain or provide transportation for a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends. • A booster may not write, make phone calls, or otherwise communicate with a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends for recruiting purposes. • A booster may not contribute funds to a prospect’s high school or club team as a form of recruiting inducement or if solicited to do so by a collegiate coach. • A booster may attend a prospect’s athletic events without contacting the prospect or his/her family. • A booster may send recommendation letters and newspaper clippings about a prospect in their area to UNCP’s coaches. • A booster may continue a pre-existing relationship with a prospect and his/her family as long as the relationship pre-dated the prospect’s recruitment or notoriety as an athlete and the nature of the relationship is not enhanced after his/her notoriety as an athlete. Such a relationship may not be for recruiting purposes. • A booster may host a current student-athlete or an entire team in their home for a meal, but only on an occasional basis. • A booster may provide a job for a student-athlete, but the job responsibilities must be legitimate and the pay commensurate for the task. GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA BENEFITS An “extra benefit” is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or athletics representative to provide a prospect, a student-athlete or his or her family with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA. Boosters may not provide any special arrangement considered to be an extra benefit. Examples of extra benefits include, but are not limited to: • Gifts of money, awards or other tangible items. • Use of vehicles or payment of transportation costs incurred by prospect, prospect's relatives or friends. • Free or reduced housing arrangements. • Promise of employment after graduation or employment of prospect's relatives or friends. • Special discounts or payment arrangements. RECRUITING GUIDELINES FOR PROSPECTS LETTERS AND NOTES Coaches may begin to write notes and letters to prospects beginning September 1 of their junior year in high school (September 15 after sophomore year for men’s basketball prospects).
