Dear 2011 Fellows: I am thrilled to welcome you to the Summer Public Health Fellowship Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC SPHF) and what promises to be an amazing experience! I designed this program to immerse you in an eight-week exploration of rewarding and impactful careers, with public health as the focal point. This summer, I, program staff and our community of partners challenge you to: Ask questions, as they will lead to knowledge and understanding; Work hard, as your efforts will lead to valuable lessons and triumphs; Allow yourself to grow and change, as doing so will lead you closer to your aspirations; And, have fun! In return, we promise to do the same. Our communities are in need of bright, energetic and highly motivated leaders who want to change the world for the better and are well-equipped to do so. I hope that this summer inspires you to pursue a public health profession (via UNC, of course) and that the knowledge, connections and community gained from this program will help you achieve your goals. The UNC Summer Public Health Fellowship Program Empowering students to pursue public health Background Dr. Felicia Mebane, Assistant Dean for Students at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, created the UNC Summer Public Health Fellowship Program (UNC SPHF) to help level the playing field for bright and motivated minority and disadvantaged students who are exploring careers in public health. Inspired by the School’s mission to train a diverse cadre of public health professionals and her own summer program experiences, UNC SPHF is the School’s first large-scale summer program. UNC SPHF is designed to feature the disciplines represented by all of the School’s departments and serve as a cornerstone for department-specific summer programs, such as the Biostatistics Summer Undergraduate Research Education program (BSURE). Purpose UNC SPHF aims to help increase the diversity of the public health professions by sharing with students (primarily) from minority and disadvantaged communities the knowledge, connections and skills that can help them successfully pursue public health careers. Fellows who complete this program will:          

Learn about core concepts and issues across public health disciplines Develop and apply a full range of job searching skills and materials Practice effective communication skills Reflect on personal goals, values and beliefs and how they influence career choices Establish online and leadership identities Network with world-class public health academics and professionals Build a professional community of peers and mentors Develop an understanding of what it takes to succeed as a public health professional Apply lessons learned via a service learning project with a public health organization Have fun!

The Village Dr. Barbara K. Rimer, Dean, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, encouraged the School’s Office of Student Affairs to be as creative and supportive of the Fellows as possible. Consequently, Dr. Mebane, Ms. Amy Hitlin and Mr. Jeffrey Simms (Assistant Directors for Professional Development) and Ms. Nicole Chenault (parttime Assistant Director for Operations) have enlisted a cadre of top-notch students, professors, staff, alumni and public health organizations to provide the workshops, service learning placements, extracurricular activities and support that comprise this program. Funding The 2011 UNC SPHF Program is funded, in part, by the Health Resources and Services Administration via a grant to the UNC Health Careers Opportunity Program (UNC HCOP). Mr. Larry Keith, former leader of the UNC HCOP grant, graciously agreed to add this program to their grant proposal in 2008 and worked with Dr. Mebane to add the public health components. This year, Dr. Mebane secured additional funding via the Partnership Program, a collaboration between UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Gillings School of Global Public Health and North Carolina Central University. In addition, the UNC Provost’s Office provided some funding as well as a grant to Tougaloo College that supports two of their students.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce public health and lay the ground work for the Fellows’ other program experiences, including exploration of graduate training and careers and their service learning placement opportunities. Objectives: After participating in this workshop, Fellows will:    

Understand differences and similarities among public health disciplines. Develop a better understanding of core public health concepts and issues. Learn and apply effective memo writing and presentation skills. Gain insight into the careers and motivations of academic public health professionals.

Assignments Teams: Fellows will be divided into eight teams. For each public health discipline, the assigned team must present a summary of key points from the readings or lessons learned, lead a discussion or activity on the topic and introduce the guest speaker. One-page memo: For the majority of these sessions, each Fellow must write a one-page memo practicing effective memo-writing skills and synthesizing or considering the next day’s topic. Final presentations: On the last day of this workshop, each team will summarize lessons learned on an assigned aspect of the workshop. These presentations will have creative elements, i.e., be in the form of a skit, song, etc.

Objectives:     

To introduce public health career opportunities. To help Fellows develop knowledge and skills related to job seeking and network development. To provide advice on choosing a career and subsequent expectations for success. To give Fellows opportunities to engage and network with public health professionals. To enhance Fellows’ professional skills in writing, communication and personal leadership.

These workshops are designed to help Fellows learn about careers in public health and develop an understanding of how their interests and skills relate to these fields. Skill-building activities will be used to introduce students to specific job-search strategies and to the concept of career development as a lifelong process. Guests from a variety of public health disciplines, fields and organizations will share their career development experiences and advice. Activities, panels of experts and assignments will give Fellows myriad opportunities to apply lessons learned. Additionally, Fellows will be introduced to skills in writing, communication and personal leadership that will be important in their professional success. Guest speakers and interactive exercises will support learning in this area.

This workshop is designed to give Fellows all the tools needed to achieve a competitive score on the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test. We will focus on time-saving test-taking strategies, in addition to mastering concepts that elude many students. This workshop does not cover strategies for the Analytical Writing section of the test. Preparation is mostly focused on the revised GRE General test (effective August 1, 2011). Objectives: These sessions will help Fellows…       

Understand upcoming changes to the GRE General test. Review test preparation strategies for verbal and quantitative reasoning sections. Discover time-saving techniques to correctly answer questions. Build vocabulary for verbal reasoning through associating similar and dissimilar words. Learn proper usage of the online calculator for quantitative reasoning problem-solving. Gain practice with computerized adaptive testing. Connect with additional preparation resources.

The UNC SPHF program has partnered with a variety of public, private and academic public health organizations to provide the Fellows with an opportunity to learn more, apply workshop lessons learned and provide real service. The resulting service learning placements will end with a final project that the fellows must present at the Public Health In Living Color Conference at the end of the program. Objectives: These placements were arranged to help Fellows:       

Clarify educational and career goals. Gain an understanding of the mission, operations, leadership and other critical features of a public health organization. Enhance organizational and time management skills. Enhance the professional skills necessary to successfully relate to fellow Fellows, colleagues, staff and supervisor(s). Enhance familiarity with employment ethics and values expected of public health professionals. Develop an understanding of the dynamics of interpersonal work relationships and relationships with diverse client populations, the public and other human service providers. Further enhance interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, multicultural awareness and leadership abilities.
