A COASTAL LULLABY IS A SONG FULL OF GOOD-BYES. IT IS AN ODE TO ALL THAT WAS, ALL WHO SUNG ITS BROTHERLY WORDS, AND THE MEMOIRS IT CREATED FOR THE HUMBLE PARTAKERS. HOW BITTERSWEET IS ITS SOFT MELODY. OH YES, IT SMILES, AND CRIES. IT LAUGHS, NOT WANTING TO SQUEAK OUT PARTING WORDS. IT SAYS WE WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER, NO MATTER THE MILEAGE OR THE PHYSICAL OR SPIRITUAL BOUNDARIES BETWEEN US. IT LIVES ON IN THE NOT SO DISTANT PAST, AND FORESHADOWS A GLORIOUS REUNION IN THE FUTURE. IT TURNS AND LOOKS OVER ITS SHOULDER ONE LAST TIME, SEEING THE SINGERS RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET. IT IS THE FINAL WORD IN THE MATTER, IT SEALS THE DEAL, IT DRAWS ITS LINES IN THE SAND, IT PAINTS ITS LAST STROKE, IT SHEDS ITS FINAL TEAR, IT LAYS US DOWN TO REST, IT GUIDES THE BROKEN HEARTED TO A SOFT SLEEP - IT IS THE SWEETEST OF GOODBYES. JOHN 3:16

Masha is a beautiful example of the UNCULTURED woman. She has confidence, intelligence, heart, and style. Her persona is extremely mysterious, accompanied by a personality which others gravitate to. I knew I had to speak to her and get to know the popular German street fashion blogger myself. She didn’t leave me disappointed one bit. From Cologne, the twenty three year old is a student, who is interested in all forms of art. She loves customizing her own pieces, does photography, enjoys good literature and naturally, adores her beloved blog. UNCULTURED: We see that you are a master of DIY, what is

your favorite creation you’ve made so far? Where do your ideas spawn from? MASHA: “Yes, I love creating DIY. [pieces]. My favorite was a jean jacket that I completely customized (bleached, colored, leather sleeves, leather details, and studded). That was a lot of work! But I love that jacket!” U: How would you describe your look? M: “A pirate, a hippie and a 90's grunge kid meet each other to drink a Whisky Coke.”

U: Tell us about your tattoos and what they mean to you. M: “I have a few tattoos [which] reminds me of something. The eye stands for "Visualization". I have one that is for my mother, one for my friends, a few standing for my attitude (eg. ne regrette rien) and some remind me of a certain time in my life (e.g. the diamond)” U: Do you own any pets? If so what do you love about them? M: “Yes, I have two lovely cats! They are really funny and make me laugh; this is why I love them.”

MASHA

U: What are the best hidden secrets about where you live? M: “We celebrate carnival 365 days a year.” U: Define “freedom” M: “Independence of common rules and standards and the possibility to say ‘F*** You, that's why!’” U: Who are your fashion inspirations? M: “I don't have someone special. I feel inspired by social networks like Tumblr and Lookbook, and by blogs and street fashion.” U: What do you hope to give back to the world? M: “I would like to encourage people to wear whatever they like, no matter what others think about it; even [if they] look strangely at you. If you're not different, you're the same.” U: We enjoyed looking at your “Trips” tips and hotspots lis on your

blogt. Where are your favorite travel destinations? M: “Oh! I love London. I've never been in such an inspiriting city before and I would love to move there for work. Of course I love to spend time at my parents home in South France. When I sit there in the evening, smell the the sea, and look on the empty white beach - that feels like paradise.” U: Your style is very ‘screw you’ punk. There seems to be a lot of

mood and creativity there, what do you express with your style? M: “I just like [what I wear] and I love to surprise people. No one would expect that I am a well-educated and well-mannered Economics student with plans, [from the way I dress]. I define myself by this opposition.”

U: What are your Favorite television shows? M: “I'm addicted to Dexter, True Blood, Californication, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead. However, I watch them all online as I don't have a TV at home!” U: Last question, what are young people lacking in their values these days? M: “Many people are too dependent on others. Instead of feeling confident in themselves, they just want recognition from others. Facebook and other social networks are not helpful, because it's all about gaining "likes". Ironically, those who are the least interested in getting "likes" get the most recognition.” U: Any last words? M: “Believe in Karma!” ▲

EMILY MARTIN UNCULTURED: What got you into photography? EMILY: “I remember when I was about 14, and I watched a documentary on Martin Parr and was inspired by the way he documented every day life through his photographs and how he captured English society. This kind of inspired me to take a camera everywhere and capture anything!” U: Do you prefer film or digital? E: “I definitely prefer film just because it feels more real and you [have to] limit yourself to how many photos are on the film. You have to think about what you are taking a photo of instead of clicking away with a digital camera and not having much thought about what you are taking a photo of ! I love the effect, especially when light leaks into the film.”

PHOTOGRAPHS BY: EMILY MARTIN WORDS BY: KAT WAWRYKOW

U: What do you tend to shoot with? E: “I have been using my trusty Pentax mz-10 which has pretty impressive outcomes! I am also quite keen to use old school disposable cameras as they are quick and easy and good to have around in your bag.” U: What is your favorite subject matter to shoot? E: “I like taking photos of people because I want to capture memories and the people that I've met. I especially like taking my camera to festivals because you can capture the atmosphere, bands and the friends that surround you! [This also applies to] buildings as I find that architecture can tell a story.”

U: Everyone knows the classic saying, "A picture is worth a

thousand words". What kind of story does your photographs say? E: “I think my photos tell a story of everyday life and the the things I see that seem interesting! I like to photograph interesting aspects, and objects that tell a story that people can relate to.” U: Is there a theme or mood swinging through your work? E: “The themes are usually based around the events I've been too, such as festivals, VW camper shows, and places I've visited such as the Lake District. ” U: What or whom are your inspirations? E: “I'm inspired by the people around me. I bounce off ideas my mum and dad gives me, the people at my university, and just going to different places. However Martin Parr has always been my top inspiration for taking photographs.” U: What is the most beautiful thing about where you live? E: “I live in the countryside so it's very beautiful; the big fields and rivers are my favorite things. I love living in England in

general because it has so many different landscapes. I love big mountains and quiet places.” U: How can visual media enhance the world? E: “I think it can teach people to look at the world differently, and teach them to look for the really small, interesting things in life that people miss!” U: Last question, your house is burning to the ground, you have time

to grab five photographs, what are they of, and why them? E: “I would grab the photo where my boyfriend and I first met in a pub on New Years Eve two years ago, the photo of Orlando from the Maccabees and myself in 2007 because he is my musical hero, a photo of my parents when they were my age because they were pretty cool, a photo of my dog when he was a puppy because now he's big and not as cute, and a photo of my sister and I in the Lake District when I was seven because it is my favorite place in the world.” U: Any last words? E: “‘People can change anything they want to, and that means everything in the world.’- Joe Strummer from The Clash. ” ▲

THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END,

or at least from my perspective that is how this all feels like. These past two months have been a mad scramble, and I am the egg. We (myself and our cinematography head Tom, along with our animating friend Sam) are moving to the East, to Toronto. I think I have explained that to so many of our interviewees that they want to just give me a big slap. But it is honestly my only excuse for the lack of diligent email responses and meet-ups. To make a long story short, the July issue got moved to August and now August doesn’t seem to be truly formulating as planned. The moral of the story is that one must realize that between packing a house, working a job shiftsupervising at a local bakery, converting all the VHS’s I own to DVD’s and saying farewell to loved ones, UNCULTURED was obviously going to take a beating. This month’s Editor’s Rant is somewhat of an apology to readers and a look into the new beginnings which lay ahead of this magazine and vintage store. Don’t hold your breath, the magazine is here to stay, but will be looking at a new system of organization so we won’t have to torment readers and interviewees alike. Phase One: Actually getting my bum across the country. In the next two weeks, I’m packing up my life into four boxes and hitting the skies. At this point I have the majority of my wardrobe packed, which is good, but with that being said I am down one box. The stress is how I will be able to fit everything I will need in the remaining boxes with humility since my companions are only taking one box each. However they are men folk, and thus can just live off of one shirt for many moons. Converting the VHS’s is another story. I was able to find a converter box to convert the VHS’s but the catch is it records in real time, which in English, means that each movie must play out entirely as if you were actually watching it to fully record into a DVD. So as you can imagine, it is quite a slow process, and myself being an avid movie lover, owns nearly every Disney and other childhood film you can imagine. Phase Two: Saying goodbye to the rest of the UNCULTURED staff and other lovely beings. This is the hardest part. I am no good at goodbyes, and it is true that I will be returning for visitings on holidays, but it will be saddening none the less. This lends to the titular language of “Coastal Lullaby”, as this July/August issue will be the last issue which all of our staff will be together to write. The history of the magazine is a simple one. It was started by a group of lovers lovers of life, of adventure, of art, of expression, and of fashion. These lovers were the closest of comrades and part took in everything from hitch-hiking to longboarding to cooking potlucks for 20 to roadtripping at 2 AM to to sleeping all day long. This is just the end of one chapter in our lives and the

beginning of a glorious new one where we each grow tremendously and expand our own minds + souls. Phase Three: Working without borders. This isn’t the first time our staff won’t be in the same tri-city area. One of our cinematographers is studying at UCLA in California, and our resident illustrator Leni is teaching art at a uni in Poland, but my right-hand Editor Jenna will no longer be with me. She is half the fuel to the fire here, so new plans will have to be established to keep the organization of the magazine on track. The fabulous thing about design school is that I have a smorgasbord of potentials at my disposal. UNCULTURED I am sure will be welcoming a bevy of new staff members and collaborators. Phase Four: Taking a look at season publishing depending on scheduling. I’m not saying anything, if anything I’m over-saying too much. Perhaps even thinking out-loud in a space I shouldn’t. UNCULTURED, depending on university, may be published on a Season basis (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) but include 2x or 3x the content. It is all possible, and I will keep readers up-to-day with whatever we decide. The most important thing is that we keep on rolling no matter what roadblocks fall in front of us. I ask you, yes you reader, to keep us close to you: to lend us your prayers, to cross your fingers for us, and to keep an eye on us during this time. Our next step will be a fantastic one full of adventure, and you shall be along for the ride as you read Editor’s Rants’ of the future. Phase Five: Just breathe. Simple. ▲

CONTRIBUTORS I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO A FEW VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE. THIS ISSUE IS SHORT AND SWEET, LIKE THE ENDING TO THE FIRST CHAPTER OF OUR LIVES. I REALIZE REGULAR READERS MAY FEEL CHEATED, LIKE THEY DIDN’T GET ALL THEY WERE BARGAINING FOR. IT IS TRUE AND FALSE, BUT LIFE HAPPENS AND A NEW BEGINNING IS ON THE WAY. THE WINTER ISSUE WILL BE JAM PACKED AS WE GET BACK INTO THE GROOVE. I WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO JENNA BENTZEN, TOM THORP, LENI WOLAN, MASHA AND EMILY MARTIN, LEW FOR PRINTING THE FIRST COPY OF THE ZINE, AND TO MY FAMILY FOR SUPPORTING MY DECISION TO GO TO SCHOOL, EVEN THOUGH THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT ART. ALL UNCULTURED RELATED CONTENT IS COPYRIGHTED TO KAT WAWRYKOW. KAT WAWRYKOW IS THE CREATOR AND DESIGNER OF UNCULTURED. THANK YOU FOR READING OUR MAGAZINE. ILLUSIONS ARE FASCINATING, BUT THEY ARE ONLY GOOD FOR A SHORT WHILE. I AM AWAKE NOW, AND I WILL BREATHE EASIER BECAUSE OF IT. GOODBYE COAST KIDS.
