THINGS YOU DID N ’ KNOW A T B O POOR O UT R A L HYGIEN E What many people don’t realize is that poor dental health can have a devastating effect on their overall health, which includes the heart, blood sugar, and chronic inflammation such as arthritis, etc. Below are some of the eye-openers you probably didn’t know about poor oral hygiene asides a smelly mouth or bad breath. PREGNANCY AND BIRTH COMPLICATIONS Did you know that good oral hygiene is advisable during pregnancy? Experts are of the opinion that oral infections can trigger pro-inflammatory mediators which are themselves risk factors for miscarriage and other types of birth complications such as premature birth and low birth weight. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: There are researches that show that there is a connection between poor oral hygiene and such health conditions as heart disease, clogged arteries, and stroke. While the connection is yet to be understood, health experts are of the opinion that these health problems might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. PNEUMONIA: Poor oral hygiene can cause respiratory infections. The bacteria in the mouth can be pulled into your lungs, causing pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.
Certain conditions also might affect your oral health, including:
DIABETES: By reducing the body’s resistance to infection, diabetes puts your gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes. Research shows that people who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. Regular periodontal care can improve diabetes control.
08
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: Worsening oral health is seen as Alzheimer’s disease progresses.
HIV/AIDS: Oral problems, such as painful mucosal lesions, are common in people who have HIV/ AIDS.
OSTEOPOROSIS: This bone-weakening disease is linked with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Certain drugs used to treat osteoporosis carry a small risk of damage to the bones of the jaw.
How can I protect my oral health? Here are some tips to ensure and maintain good oral hygiene: 1. Ensure you brush before going to bed It’s no longer news that we must brush at least twice a day. Still, many of us continue to neglect to brush our teeth at night. But brushing before bed helps us to get rid of the germs that have accumulated in the mouth throughout the day. 2. Brush properly The way you brush is equally important. I have seen people brush their teeth within a few seconds and at times I wonder if they did anything at all. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should spend the entire day brushing your teeth but at least ensure you do it well for a few minutes. Doing a poor job of brushing your teeth is almost as bad as not brushing at all. Take your time, moving the toothbrush in gentle, circular motions toremove plaque. Unremoved plaque can harden, leading to calculus buildup and gingivitis (early gum disease). 3. Don’t neglect your tongue Plaque can also build up on your tongue. Not only can this lead to bad mouth odor, but it can lead to other oral health problems. Gently brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.
09
4. Use a fluoride toothpaste When it comes to toothpaste, there are more important elements to look for than whitening power and flavors. No matter which brand you use, make sure it contains fluoride. Over the years people have shown their concern as to what impacts it has on other areas of our health, but still, this substance remains a mainstay in oral health. This is because fluoride is a leading defense against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that can lead to decay, as well as providing a protective barrier for your teeth. 5. Treat flossing as important as brushing Many who brush regularly neglect to floss. Flossing is not just for getting little pieces of food that may have gotten stuck between your teeth, as Dr. Jonathan Schwartz, points out. “It’s a way to stimulate the gums, reduce plaque, and help lower inflammation in the area.”Flossing once a day is usually enough to reap the benefits mentioned above. 6. Consider mouthwash Many people don’t see the form of using a mouth wash probably because they don’t know how it works or the real importance of using it. Mouthwash helps in three ways as stated by Dr. Jonathan Schwartz
It reduces the amount of acid in the mouth Cleans hard-to-brush areas in and around the gums Re-mineralizes the teeth, etc. 7. Drink more water Water continues to be the best beverage for your overall health — including oral health. I recommend that you drink enough water after every meal. This can help wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages. 8. See your dentist at least twice a year Your everyday habits are crucial to your overall oral health. Still, even the most dutiful brushers and flossers need to see a dentist regularly. At a minimum, you should see your dentist for cleanings and checkups twice a year. Not only can a dentist remove the debris in your teeth but they also spot potential issues and offer treatment solutions.
Conclusion
Your oral health is very important to your overall physical health as I have outlined in this article. It’s important to set aside a few minutes every day for your dental hygiene routine. If you have any questions about your oral health, you can schedule an appointment with your dentist. He or she will be able to identify any oral health issues that require attention and provide treatment options as well as at-home care advice.

EXTOLLING MENTAL HEALTH: A Tributary To Riky Rick Beyond outward appearance, many people are going through one difficulty or the other. We never know until it is too late. Up until today, many regard very serious situations like fear, sadness, heartbreak, depression, emotional distress, addictions, bipolar disorder, and similar conditions as trivial. These are mental health challenges that ought to be taken very seriously. They constitute our emotional, psychological, and social well-being which often affect the way we think, perceive things, and act. Depressive disorder, otherwise known as depression, is a serious mental health condition that requires deep understanding and clinical care. It is a medical condition that makes one very unhappy and anxious and often prevents one from living a normal life. Just like with Cheslie Corrinne Kryst, Johnny Creed, Simone Sherise Battle, and many others, Riky Rick, who was a South African rap star, producer, singer, songwriter, and fashion designer, was reported to have committed suicide by hanging on 23 February 2022. He is said to have been battling depression. He literally revealed in his last performance, “I am about to be out. If you not gonna see or hear from me again, remember my words: Take care of the people who are close to you in 2022”, he said. The death of the famous South African rapper came as a rude shock to many after he took his own life at the age of 34 after a lengthy ba ttle with acute depression.
12
Mental health challenges are on the increase across the world. Many people are suffering from it. However, we often pay little or no attention to it. Oftentimes, there are many clues, hints, and indications. No one read through Riky Rick’s message until the news of his death. On some level, we all need to be discerning with the people around us. Aside from just checking up on our friends and loved ones and getting the usual, “I’m fine”, it takes a little prodding to realise that nobody is fine within. Similarly, it was reported that Henry Ehis, a third year undergraduate student of the department of Actuarial Science, University of Jos, took his own life over dissatisfaction with the current strike action embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), leaving a short note. Another student of the same University, Obed Ejale, took his life over a heartbreak. He equally left a note: “To my super woman (mother). Mama, you really raised me a good kid, you thought me the ways of the word but your not here with me, there’s no point living ma, the girl I thought loves me doesn’t give a fuck about me and I can’t really live without you her.” Depression and thoughts of suicide are real. Depression is a serious mental ailment, which if not properly handled, can lead to death. Millions of people are just getting by on a daily. Hopelessness and apathy have taken over the world. We must learn to pay attention to others’ struggle and act when it really matters. Beyond outward appearance, many people are going through one difficulty or the other. We never know until it is too late. Check on a friend or loved one today.

GHANA'S BIGGEST TIKTOKER,
TALKS COMEDY AS REMEDY FOR SERIOUS HEALTH CONCERNS
It is no news that Janet Offei popularly known as Erkuah official is Ghana’s most followed Tiktoker. Afrobeatsglobal presenter, Omobola Val (@omobolanleadigun_) sat down with the superstar at her residence in Ghana in a very interesting interview session about her personal life, career and her contribution to the sound health and wellbeing of her fans.
16
Kindly introduce yourself to the readers My name is Janet Offei AKA Erkuah Official. Is Erkuah your brand name or your original name? Erkuah is my original name and it’s a name given to a girl-child born on Wednesday here in Ghana. What’s your educational background? I’m currently in the University right now. I’m in level 300 to be precise. What content made you go viral? It was a South African sound I used, a beat which I played an African mother and a daughter role to. People were dancing to the beat but I did something different to it and I think my facial expression also played a huge role in the success of the content. How did you coin your own style of comedy; the unique use of facial expressions? I’m someone who makes funny facial expressions but I really didn’t know how to put it into videos. One day, I just decided to put it into a video to see people’s reactions and people were commenting “Who is this girl? I love how she makes her facial expression.” This encouraged me to adopt the style fully. How and when did you venture into Content Creation? I never thought of being a content creator because I’m a student. I just started creating contents because I was bored during the major outbreak of COVID-19 when most places where on lockdown and here I am today. How lucrative would you describe the content creation business? It’s wonderful and I didn’t know I could get a lot of things from TikTok because like I said I was doing it out of boredom at first. I didn’t know I could make money from the app. I didn’t know I could get the kind of connection I’ve gotten. In fact, the iPhone I’m currently using was bought from the money made on Tiktok. TikTok has been good to me. You have 2.7 million followers, beyond Ghana what other countries do you think you havea strong fan base in? I think it’s Nigeria because I believe I’m even more popular there than here in Ghana. I’m also popular in Kenya, South Africa, and in some foreign countries too.
GHANA’S BIGGEST TIKTOKER,
Do you have any official endorsement with any major brand? Yes, I do and that’s with CocaCola.
Wow! Well, on Tiktok there are different houses, do you belong to any house and what’s your opinion about these groupings and houses? No, I don’t belong to any house. I think each house has its own unique reason for being created which I don’t know. There’s also a saying that “You rise by lifting others.” So there are some stronger creators who might help the less strong ones grow. Also, it helps the joint-usage of each person’s connection. In this industry, you can’t do things alone, you need to collaborate.
17
Judging from your role as an influencer, how important do you think the use of social media is to the promotion of brands and for entertainment at large? Social media is now key because most people don’t watch TV anymore. Most people do everything fast and reliably on their phones. A lot of brands have realised this and are using social media to promote their brands. Do your parents support this career of yours? My mum is extremely supportive. I mean whose parents won’t be happy? I’m making her proud, cheering people out of their depression and entertaining people. But my dad isn’t alive so I can’t speak for the dead. Accept our condolences on that. Thank you. You’ve been to Nigeria before. How will you describe your experience in Nigeria compared to here in Ghana? One thing you don’t know is I was born in Nigeria. I lived in Nigeria for a while before coming here. Ghana is a calm country but in Nigeria, you’ll know you are in Nigeria because everyone is in a hurry. As someone who was born in Nigeria, answer this next question in pidgin: Considering your extremely comic character and costumes, do you encounter people who consider you unserious? Yes of course, even with some of my friends when I dey tell them something serious, dem go dey tell me say I no serious and I go dey tell them say I dey very serious. Sometimes online when I do transition videos, some people go still consider am funny but no be wetin my plan be be that. When I take nice pictures, some people will still tell me I should have worn myuniform and all. Are you in a relationship? No, I’m not in a relationship and I’m not interested for now. Do you think your career will hinder some kind of men from approaching you? No. You have to be yourself and that’s why anyone who wants to love me should love me for who I am. In fact, most people even love people who do comedy. If you are coming to me, you should be ready to accept me the way I am. Who do you consider your role model in the industry? Let me be honest, I don’t have a role model. I only look up to God. I am my own role model. What are the benefits of this career choice of yours? So I’ll speak for myself. I have gained a lot financially. Secondly, I’ve been able to gain relevant connections and I’ve secured good gigs with notable brands. This issue is themed ‘Health and Beauty’. Health-wise, what role would you say your career plays in the maintenance of good health? Comedy has cured a lot of sicknesses; spiritually, physically, mentally and psychologically. When you visit my comment section, you’ll see people write things like “I was in depression but after watching your videos, now I can laugh.” People go through a lot and they need something to calm them down and make them snap away their sorrow. Whether a person had a bad day with his boss at work or he or she is going through a breakup, comedians help people deal with their situations. Comedy is therapeutic and most people want to watch Erkuah’s video to feel better.
18
What would you describe as the secrets to becoming a successful Tiktoker? There is really no secret because everything is out there for you. But like I always say, don’t try to be like other people, be yourself and be patient and with time, you’ll be as successful as you wish. What is the most embarrassing fan experience you’ve had so far? I went to the mall and I was paying for some things I bought then. There were some girls recording me and laughing. I felt bad like they shouldn’t be doing that to my face. Then when I stepped out I saw a little girl who ran towards me to hug me and I didn’t know what to do. It was then that these girls now approached me asking me for a picture. I told them “No” because I mean I wouldn’t have done what they did to me to anyone. How do you envision your brand in five years? Ok so TikTok made me famous but I want to have a plan B. Five years from now, I want to be known beyond TikTok so that even when there isn’t TikTok anymore, I want my brand to still be relevant. A message to your fans? I love you guys so much. Thank you for being so supportive and thank you for giving me tips for new video ideas. You people don’t know you give me tips but you do. My number one fan is my mum, thank you for always supporting me. Thank you so much to Tunde Ednut and Funke Akindele for always supporting me and pushing my contents on their platforms. I love you all so much.

5 Fashion & Styling Movies to see for
ideas
veryone must have experienced, at least once, the frustration of not finding the right outfit to wear after spending hours looking through their closet. The same is accruable when you feel lost without having a specific fashion style. When that happens, getting inspiration from the media can be a life-saver. That is why we have put together a list of a movies, TV series, and shows you can draw ideas from for your next outfit. If you’re equally here in search for some entertainment and aesthetically pleasing movies, this list is perfect for you. It ranges from classics like Clueless with its iconic plaid uniforms and wealthy teen fashion, to more modern shows like Euphoria where serious social topics are openly discussed but packaged in glamorous outfits and make-up.
1. Sex and The City (2008) There never seems to be enough time to watch all of the new shows, movies, and series that you’ve been meaning to. While it is natural to want something new and stimulating, it is also natural to want something familiar and comforting, so why not begin with a classic? Michael Patrick King wrote and produced the 2008 romantic comedy film Sex and the City.
Just like the show, the movie is a constant source for fashion inspiration, designer brands, and NYC style. With four major characters, there’s an outfit suited for everyone. The wardrobe on Sex and the City is a catalogue of outfit inspiration that even today’s biggest fashion influencers look to for guidance – with a mix of designer, vintage, and thrift store pieces carefully put together by costume designer, Patricia Fields.
20
2. Clueless (1995) Clueless has become a cult classic, thanks to its hilarious one-liners, incredible ‘90s slang, tartan plaid skirt suits, and fanciful head accessories. But what makes Clueless so memorable is how the outfits created by costume designer Mona May are still as relevant and trendy as they were in 1995. She ignored the ‘90s grunge in order to create a fantasy wardrobe of what wealthy American teenagers might wear. Not many movies leave as strong an artistic impression as Clueless. The outfits on Clueless have become so culturally significant that, even after 27 years, they are still commonly mentioned by top fashion designers and modern media creators alike.
3. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) The Devil Wears Prada may take some fashion reference points from reality, using real-life designers and editors as inspiration, but part of its appeal largely stems from the way it gives the fashion industry such a fairytale ambience. Despite its age, the film is still regarded as one of the most celebrated fashion films in recent history, with outfits that many draw inspiration from today. The film features fashionable suits, office politics, and a sweet romance, making it a must-see. Patricia Field and her assistant Tracy Cox (who worked with Field on the final season of Sex and the City) deserve credit for putting together the film’s stunning wardrobe, from the fabulous array of coats to the selection of gloomy sunglasses.
Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.” - Miranda Priestley (Meryl Streep)
21
4. Euphoria (2019) It is indisputable that Euphoria has had an impact on the worlds of fashion and beauty through its unique representation of Generation Z. In the midst of the very raw and uncensored portrayal of adolescent problems, the characters arrive at school remarkably well dressed, with each character dressed in well-thought-out outfits that reflect and convey their tone and personality.
The ability of the audience to fully immerse themselves in the universe of their new favourite series is largely attributed to the outlandish dress-up that can motivate people with feminine wardrobes to be more unique.
The show rightfully takes pride in its characters’ fashion, ranging from Jules’ colourful, whimsical style to the street kid look depicted by characters like Fez and Ashtray.
5. Coming 2 America (2021) Though it was not a box office success following its initial release in 1988, Coming to America has become a cult favourite in recent decades – especially with the arrival of its sequel, Coming 2 America. Its critical acclaim has been attributed largely to the kaleidoscopic costumes donned by majority of the characters therein. The cast of designers that worked on the film spans the globe. This is including Nigeria (House of Deola), South Africa, India and the United States. An honorable mention is owed to Ruth E. Carter – the first Black woman to win an Academy Award for costume design. She has brought her character-centric, colourful costumes to groundbreaking films about Black culture and the African experience for more than 30 years. She replicated a luxurious flurry of Afro-centric outfits for the entire cast of Coming 2 America.

The answer is neither a bold yes nor a great no. While the presence of compounds called catechins in green tea can help anybody lose fat, especially harmful abdominal fat, its impact varies from persons to persons. Experts are of the opinion that when it comes to actual weight lost, the effects of green tea are relatively modest. While many studies show that people actually lose weight, some reveal no effect. Some health experts say that one can lose up to 3 lbs or 1.3 kg every 12 weeks by drinking green tea. Several studies suggest that green tea can boost metabolism and help people burn 3–4% more calories each day. Also, green tea extracts have been repeatedly linked to increased fat burning, especially during exercise. Drinking between 2 and 3 cups of hot green tea throughout the day should be sufficient for supplementing weight loss. The exact amount will vary from person to person, depending on how much caffeine they consume and their natural metabolism. Drinking large amounts might cause side effects due to the caffeine content. These side effects can range from mild to serious and include headache and irregular heartbeat. Green tea extract also contains a chemical that has been linked with liver injury when used in high doses. One study showed that those who consumed green tea and caffeine lost an average of 2.9 pounds . Include green tea in your daily medications today and save yourself from some unnecessary health challenges.

It is often said that looking good is good business. As human beings we are moved by what we see. How you look on the inside matters. Equally important is your appearance on the outside. Most people seldom cater for their outer needs — that is, their physical look and appearance. For religious people, this is understandable because their faith admonishes them to value inner beauty and not outer appearance. Some people have however misconstrued this to the point that they do not consider their outward appearance to say the very least. They pay little or no attention to how they look. They for the most part look haggard and unkempt. Inasmuch as several belief systems require us to prioritize inner beauty, it is not an excuse not to dress well or look beautiful on the outside. While God has already made us beautiful by the works of his creation, it is of a necessity that we maintain and solidify that beauty by dressing well and looking good. It only becomes a problem when we extol our outward appearance and refuse to work on our inner appearance. Balancing both is vital.
26
Many couples, women especially, have lost their marriages on this note. Once they get married, they immediately become too comfortable and stop looking their best. Yes. Marital unions should not be defined by outward appearance but it is one fraction of the equation that spices and makes it work. In my final year in college, I had already started anticipating what life would look like after graduation. I knew jobs were scarce and even those with good grades still struggled to get better paying jobs. I was really bothered as I didn’t want to join the long train of unemployed graduates. I read and worked hard to get my grades high. I knew grades were not enough so I did everything I could to avoid falling within that group. When I finally graduated from the university, I started hunting for jobs. I remember my first interview at a microfinance bank. That was my first after nine months of searching. I had carefully read the requirements needed for the job before I applied. I knew I was going to get it either ways because of my good grades and then my level of knowledge. Just when I got to the venue of the interview, I saw what immediately took away something from me. I saw young men and women like myself but they were smartly dressed. They looked exotic that if I were to be the one to interview them they would have passed 70% of the test. Some of the men had these fine-looking briefcases which contained their files. Their suits were richly elegant and the perfume of some of the ladies was breathtaking. I on the other hand had no suit on. The files I wanted to present were in my hand. It was obvious that I ironed the shirt I wore in a hurry with few rumples giving me away. Coupled with how I saw how my fellow interviewees, this immediately killed my confidence. When I eventually got called, I was stuttering all through the interview. I went blank on some occasions. It was one of the embarrassing moments in life. Immediately I heard “we will get back to you”, I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me that it was a sham. That experience however shaped me. It taught me the importance of dressing well. The honest truth is that in life people will always judge you based on how you look on the outside. As humans, that is the first impression we get of other people and as the saying goes first impression matters. If you were to think through it all, you’d realize how many preconceived notions and stereotypes are built into our own assumption of other people. You don’t want to be judged based on your appearance or how you look but you judge people based on how they look — the same way you’re put off by guys who sag their jeans and ladies who reveal sensitive parts of their body.
27
It is of a truth that there is a psychology to dressing well. Dressing well is in fact one of the yardsticks that will determine how far you will go in life. You may say that you owe it to nobody to dress well but in the real sense if you want people to listen or pay attention to you, you have to cultivate the habit of dressing well. If you come out as somebody that doesn’t know how to dress well, you’re almost likely to be disrespected or disregarded. The way you dress and present yourself will always play a major role in every facet of your life. This is the reality which you may find disturbing but there is a saying that successful people are those who accept reality for what it is and pedal it to their advantage. Your price goes up when you are well dressed. The next interview I went for, I looked as sharp as possible, taking a cue from my previous experience. To my surprise, the salary expectation I mentioned which was slightly above the one stipulated was immediately considered. More so, it is possible that the little or no attention you get from people is owing to your appearance, especially for those seeking for a spouse. I recall the case of a particular brother who came for counseling. His exact words were: “I don’t know what is wrong with me. Women seem to be running away from me.” He went on to say nobody talks to him that sometimes it makes him depressed. More so, some people allow what they are going through define how they dress. If they are happy, they dress well. If they are not, they dress it. If you’re going through a crisis period, you shame the devil when you look your best and let out a smile. When you are suffering and your outer countenance says otherwise it is a step of faith especially when it is backed by constant supplications.
28
TIP OFFS TO LOOKING GOOD KNOW WHAT WORKS FOR YOU: Many people spend a lot on clothes that they end up not wearing. Knowing what works is important to dressing well and this including understanding your body type. You may see a dress you like on someone and when you put it on it doesn’t exactly matches your body type and size. When you understand your body type you will know what dress will look good on you. Even before you wear the dress, you’d have imagined how it will look on you. This also includes what hairdo fits you perfectly. TRY IT OUT: Before you pay for that dress, try it out and be sure that it fits you properly. You don’t want to get home and realise that it is either too big or too small. GET A TAILOR OR STYLIST: The importance of a tailor or fashion stylist cannot be overemphasized. You may not have the money for a personal tailor or fashion stylist, but there are tons of them around. Look for one that is reliable. It is sometimes difficult to get one that is good at their craft. Seek recommendations and referrals from people to avoid disappointments. They will help you get your clothes tailored so that they fit you well. CHOOSE A FASHION MODEL: There are a good number of fashion gurus and trend setters. They just know how to combine wears and make it stand out in a classy and elegant style. Choose one of them whose personality and body type aligns with yours and model your fashion sense after theirs. EXPERIMENT: Experiment with fashion styles by mixing together opposites or unexpected color combinations. You can wear one color from top-below either in a few different shades or exact same shade. You can equally put on an outfit you would normally wear then add an accessory that stands you out. Practice they say make perfect.

IF HERBAL CONCOCTION (AGBO) CURES AILMENT, PROVE IT! APROKO DOCTOR
30
?
n this Health & Beauty Issue, Uncutxtra features one of the medical phenomena in Nigeria that provides relatable medical advice and hands-on solutions for everyday healthcare promotion. In an interview with Afrobeatsglobal Presenter, Chioma Ezeh (@chiomaa_ezeh), Dr. Chinonso Fidelis Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, provides details of his journey and highlights significant stories as a medical doctor, social media influencer, and health advocate. Hey Aproko Doctor, it’s so good to have you here.
How has the journey been for you?
(Laughs) same here.
Good and bad. Ups and downs. It started officially in 2015; I have been doing this for seven years now. Initially, it wasn’t so good. At the time I started, people were not used to it. At first, we started with graphics designs but it looked like no one was paying attention, up until one day I decided to tell a story of myself, of a patient I had on twitter and for some reasons, it went viral. That got me thinking, “People love stories”. So we decided to tell stories. We started telling stories with threads or tweets and it was gaining traction, people loved it. But over time, we realized there was another group of people that we were not paying attention to, the people that loved videos, and that’s when we decided to also make videos that are not only funny but also passing a message.
So, a lot of people know you as Aproko Doctor, can you tell us what your full name is and who you are? My name is Chinonso Fidelis Ejemba. I have been called many things, at some point, I was called Bobby, and that’s not my name. Let’s just say Bobby is just one of those names people call you because you look like a Bobby (laughs). I am a medical doctor; an executive director for the 100k club; the head of growth for Mofty and Event Ark; a husband, a brother; a friend and I hail from Imo state. How did you come up with the name Aproko Doctor? I’ll say serendipity. It just happened but the idea behind it was that, we were looking for something that will stick. When people hear Aproko Doctor, they imagine someone who is unserious. It’s not something that you are used to. In Nigeria, when you hear ‘medical doctor’, the first thing that comes to your head is someone who is so serious, but that wasn’t the persona I was trying to create, I was trying to create a doctor who is your friend, a doctor who you can talk to about anything without feeling like you are speaking to a doctor.
Before we continue, we want to know why you continuously disparage Nkechi in your videos. Do you have any Nkechi in your life that has offended you? (Laughs). So, there’s a long story and short story. The short story is there’s no Nkechi in my life. And the long story is, Nkechi broke my heart so I decided to get back at all the Nkechi’s. What of Philomena, Nkechi, Pius and Segun ? Philomena is Nkechi’s friend, Emeka snatched Nkechi from me, Pius was the ring leader and Segun was an innocent bystander. Na stray bullet(laughs).
31
We noticed that you have changed your style of videos, you no longer post long videos or skit, why is that? We haven’t stopped it, we are just restrategizng for the future. Those videos will definitely come back, they have not gone anywhere but we want to put them for another channel, channel where people are designed to watch longer videos. It’s going to come on your TV, it’s going to also be on YouTube.
Do you think being popular has changed you? I don’t think it has changed me, but I think it has affected me. It’s not that I am not grateful, but one of the things that I have lost is my personal freedom; I can’t go out without people recognizing me. Do you like it? Well, there’s no straight answer, because there are times you want to be by yourself and there are times you want people to acknowledge you.
Why don’t you share photos of your family on social media?
Do you think face mask helps? (Laughs) No it doesn’t help. They always recognize me.
It is deliberate, but it’s not because I am a Nigerian man, it’s simply because I want to separate my work from family. Aproko Doctor is different from Chinonso Egemba.
What do you think about bleaching creams? It’s just sad. The way it is done, the way it is sold, the way it is packaged; it is one of those things that prey on the insecurities of others. There’s so much black girl positivity but people still insult dark skinned people and that’s why people still try to bleach themselves. The worst is, someone can just wake up one day, mix cream together and put it in a container; so people have to be careful of what they put on their skin.
So do you have another page or account for Chinonso Egemba? My management is definitely working on creating that so that I can do other things. This is because I have other interests apart from medicine; I love perfumes, I love music…I mean, I love to sing. I’ll want to share all those interests with people, so I feel that’s best done on my personal page, because when people come to Aproko Doctor, they are coming to learn something. How old are you? I am 31 now, I’ll be 32 years old on the 26th of October.

use it to treat many diseases at the same time and it is very funny because many ailment have different pathologies. You are simply rolling dice with peoples’ health. So, when we talk about this, we are really pushing for regulations of that industry. There need to be proofs, facts and research that back up the claims.
Speaking of the skin, what’s your skin routine like? Some days, I am the average Nigerian man: wake up, bath and just go out. Other days, I do my moisturizer, my under eyes cream, but because of how my day has gotten, I just do face wash, moisturizer and sunscreen.
We know that you love to sing, so do you think you’ll go into that anytime soon?
Do you think facial cleanser is good? Sure! You should invest in a facial cleanser if you are reading this, because most times, it is the exposure to the sun that damages your skin.
(Laughs) I think it is a hobby and it should remain as one; I do not want it to become a career because there will be so much pressure to deliver and I don’t want that. I want to sing because I enjoy it.
We know you talk about kidney all the time in your videos. Can you highlight the things that we do that affects our kidney?
What of acting? Oh yes! I love acting; I will definitely go into that.
I would say people not checking their blood pressure. You should always check your blood pressure. Diabetes and agbo (herbal concoction) causes it too. On these herbal supplements, people argue that our ancestors used it, which is valid, but in the same vein, you do not know what you are taking. In the leaves you are boiling, there could be harmful substances that the person selling it might have no idea about it. The reason we have trust in orthodox medicine is that we tell you the side-effects and what would happen if you abuse it upfront. People just take “agbo” because they think they can. Another problem with these herbal supplements is that they tend to
You talked about you having appendicitis and how it affected you, how did you feel at that point? Did you think you were not going to make it? For some reason I didn’t think I was not going to make it, I think I was just bothered about the fact that my mates had moved on to another class and I was in the same class. It was not supposed to be, but that was how I felt and because I was training to be a medical doctor, I was not scared because I already knew the procedures. However, what stood out was the pain, it was just too much, but thank God, we now have better pain man-

agement. How many months did it take you to heal? It took about three months; there were complications but it ended well. Talking about the EndSARS Protest, a lot happened and you were active, how was it like for you then, how did you feel? It was very emotional; I was tired as a person, tired of the police brutality. I have experienced this and it is very sad. For me, it was personal and I wanted to change that. I believe it will change a lot in the next election, I feel it awakened us, especially the young people to understand that we have a voice and we can be listened to. What I feel we should have done better was that we should have been more organized and strategic and use channels that the government understands. I know that you are popular now, but have you ever got to a phase were you felt tired and you just wanted to run away? (Laughs) I felt like that this morning. I felt like running away but the thing is, that’s how I see life. We all have vicissitudes but
that’s not who you are. That is why I still drive myself because driving is the only time I get to think and be on my own. Have you ever been depressed before ? Yes; quite a number of times. It happens to the best of us, and it is not something that is beautiful, but many people go through it. But I am not ashamed to say I have once been depressed. How were you able to handle it? I don’t think it’s something that you can just snap out of, but I think there is need for a support system, because having someone who understands what you are going through can help. Initially, when I was battling depression, they said it was evil spirit, but now I know better. Thank God there are now counselors that are free. Anyone that is depressed should please reach out to them.
34
Do you exercise and what advise will you give to people that struggle with it? I love exercising and I definitely do not struggle with it. I think it’s just discipline, when you know why you are doing it, you begin to love it and then get used to it
Growing up, I used to have something I called “Battle of the Gifted, because I could do quite a number of things. It was difficult choosing one. And it’s almost a blessing and a curse. Please explain further It’s a curse because I get distracted a lot. Because I know how to do almost everything. It’s just hard to focus on one. And it’s a blessing because it’s just cool to be good at almost everything.
What do you do for fun? I spray perfumes (laughs). It’s something I love. I How do you handle bad comments? might start a perfume channel soon. I have had a whole lot. Do you still practice it? Currently No. Not because I hate it, it’s simply because I have become too busy for it. Graphic designing takes a lot of time. Apart from that, I also think, act and sing.
35
My strengths: I can read people, I can tell when someone is tensed, when they are lying, truthful and the rest and I think it came from years of observing patients. I learn on-the-go, I would rather jump into something and start learning how to do it, than sit down to get all the information before going ahead. For my Weaknesses, I over-analyze a lot. I see flaws before I see good things.
Has this ever affected your relationship? Yes, it has. Did you handle it well? No, I didn’t; but I learnt and currently, I am still learning. Being consistent is one of the reasons you are here, what advice do you have for people who are still hustling and not seeing enough result? I will say, use my story. I have been doing this for 7years, but people just hear about me and think I just started but no, I have been begging for retweets, for people to take a chance, if I had given up then, this wouldn’t have been possible. I think a question should be answered, “How important is what you are doing important to you?” Moreover, if it really matters, you are going to stick to it until you get results. Therefore, whatever it is you are doing, find ways to stick to it, make it your baby and soon, you will see results.

Did you know that there are clothes that you can wear to prevent your skin from aging? The sun sends out ultraviolet rays. Two of them, ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) get through to us and are harmful: • UVA causes aging, wrinkling and loss of elasticity of the skin. • UVB is associated with skin cancer and cataracts. MODIFYING YOUR CLOTHES CHOICE FOR BETTER SKIN AND EYE HEALTH WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. Go for Dark or Bright Colours. Dark coloured clothes absorb UV rays thereby preventing them from reaching your skin. A bright blue shirt is an efficient absorber relative to a pale blue one. Avoid Elastic Clothing Clothes that stretch tend to become diaphanous after stretching thereby letting UV rays through. Choose Tightly Woven Fabrics. Tightly knit fabrics have very minute pores and so screens off the sun’s UV rays. Polyester, Nylon, Wool and Silk Fabrics. These are more protective than cotton, rayon, flax and hemp.
Sunglasses
Trousers and Long-sleeved Tops These offer covering for most of the body against the sun. Wide-brimmed Hats A stylish hat with a wide brim will serve the dual purpose of giving you a fashionable look and keeping your face safe from the sun.

Sunglasses with 99-100% UV protection are necessary for defending the eyes against the sun.
Both age shaming and body shaming has become the order of the day. Aging now seem like contracting a deadly disease as the society has placed so much importance on using age as a prerequisite for success. Sadly, age shaming is on the increase among women than men. It is a quite sensitive and disturbing topic for many women because they are often degraded and ridiculed in the society for being old.
Men too are sometimes shamed for not having moustaches or muscles. Other times, the body shaming extends to the size of their genitals. The same applies to skinny women or people with a small frame. The irony is that those who indulge in the act of body shaming do not realise that their gross behaviour can have psychological impact on others. It can mess up their mental and physical state thereby causing their lack of confidence. Anxiety and depression may set in, and this can lead to them committing suicide, yielding to the pressures of ‘ideal beauty’.
Even renowned personalities are not left out in the shaming slug. For example, popular Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade, was age shamed by a troll on Twitter for being single at her age: “You’re now entering your forties, almost seeing you menopause and you’ve not married, it is not even that you have children self”. In response, the Grammy affiliated singer said to allow women live their lives and be celebrated just like their male counterparts. The pressure to stay young in today’s society has more of the negative consequences than positive. It has made a lot of people reduce their age for fear of being called an oldie and to equally fit in, hence they conceal their actual age. For many other people, women especially, they have had to undergo plastic surgeries in order to remain young and beautiful. More disturbing is the fact that a good number of people have fallen into depression as such.
People need to stop the act of age and body shaming others. “Aging is inevitable! Embrace it!!”. There is absolutely nothing wrong with growing or getting old. More so, body positivity is everything.
Consequently, comments like, “old cargo”, “you’re too old to be among”, “you’re getting old”, “at this age you shouldn’t be single”; have made many lose faith and confidence in themselves. Many now fail to accept their age, nor appreciate themselves.
Many fail to understand that aging is the best thing that can happen to anyone. People underrate the importance of what growing old is. Aging is worth celebrating every day rather than be used as a yardstick on how people live and enjoy their lives.

10 It may interest one to know that the first food God recommended for man was fruits (See Genesis 1:29). More interesting is the life span of people of that era of eating only fruits. Generally speaking, fruits provide the body with vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals form a group called protective food nutrients. This means that fruits strengthen the immune system and keep the body healthy. Apart from these, fruits also contain polyphenols and carbohydrates. Examples of fruits include mangoes, bananas, pawpaw, pineapple, avocado, etc. Below, you will see what you miss if you don’t, and what you gain if you do, eat fruits.
Unbelieveable Health Benefits of Fruits
CANCER PREVENTION Energy production activities within the cell release some ghastly, highly reactive radicals that have the potential of causing cancer. Fruits contain antioxidants which counteract the harmful effects of these species thereby giving anti-carcinogenic protection. Antioxidants include vitamin C and polyphenols and their richest sources are oranges and blueberries respectively. HEART HEALTH AND STROKE PREVENTION Fruits like avocados and olives are rich in monounsaturated fat which lowers cholesterol levels and, as a result, reduces risks of heart disease and stroke. Potassium and fiber from fruits also help to keep the heart working well. HEALTHY EYES AND SKIN Lutein and vitamin A which are got from fruits like avocados and peaches are beneficial for skin and eye health. PREVENTION OF CONSTIPATION AND WEIGHT LOSS Fiber in fruits like apples and oranges make for good gut health and weight management. IMMUNE BOOST Vitamin C boosts immune function by facilitating the absorption of iron from plantbased sources. LOWER RISK OF DIABETES Anthocyanin, an antioxidant found in blueberries, cherries and many other fruits reduces risks of type 2 diabetes. BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL MANAGEMENT Manganese from fruits like pineapple and fibre from apples, oranges, etc helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Resistant starch and pectin from unripe bananas also aid in blood sugar control. GOOD MOOD AND SLEEP Cherries contain substances that support good mood and sleep.

SPINAL HEALTH: WHY YOU SHOULD NOT JOKE WITH YOUR
DR. PT ADEJUGBAGBE MUYIWA KENNETH is a Lead Physiotherapist at the Hospital for Trauma ad Surgery in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. He is also the founder of Stroke and Spine Rehab Centre (SSRC) NeuroRehab Institute. He sheds light on recent trends in his field and daily experience of significant health impact. ealth is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Spinal health falls under the physical well-being of a person and this is simply an indication of the fact that the backbone is in an optimal state thereby affording stability and support to the body structures while protecting the spinal cord and delicate nerve roots. Little wonder the Yorubas popularly refer to that part of the body as ‘Opa Eyin’ which means the rod of the back. It is important to note that the Spine consists of different structures, which are the 33 individual vertebrae, the intervertebral disc that connects the vertebrae, ligaments, the almighty spinal cord, the spinal fluid in which it swims, the muscles, and tendons surrounding the backbone.
This spine is divided into 5 regions, namely the 7 cervical vertebrae (which correspond to the neck), thoracic (12 vertebrae which correspond to the level of the chest), lumbar (5 of them, the low back), the sacral (5 of which is fused toElaborating further as gether at the pelvis), and the tailbone (3 to what makes the spine -5 vertebrae fused together also known a very integral part of as the coccyx). the body (which is sometimes called backbone or In the spine, there are four curves, which vertebral column, but for are: the cervical curve and the lumbar the purpose of this text I curves which are curved inward, and will hereinafter refer to it the thoracic and sacral which are both as the ‘spine’). The spine curved outward. If these curves are flatextends from the base of tened out or curved in excessively, it the skull to the tailbone can predispose the body to unpleasant which is at the buttocks. symptoms. I do not want to bore you
with too much anatomical gibberish, but it is important I highlight the few mentioned as it helps us have a deeper understanding of how the back works. The Spine is very important as it is part of the central nervous system, alongside the brain, as it helps control movement, sensation, relays information to the brain, and helps us stand upright. The Spine has a sandwich between each of the vertebral bones called the intervertebral disc. The Intervertebral disc helps with absorption of shock when we walk, jump or fall on our buttocks – the curves of the spine also have a role in this regard. The spinal curves help improve balance, afford stabilizing support to the muscles and help maintain their flexibility. Be it

in standing, sitting, sleeping or walking, necessity is laid on maintaining the natural curves of the spine. With regard to the human body as a whole, it is indeed intricately and delicately pieced together to make for a whole and healthy being. So what are those things that could jeopardise the spinal ecosystem? Firstly, we need to know that the spine is a very vital part of the human body, and has a significant role to play in every part of the body system: Movement – its role cannot be overemphasized; Reproduction - erection, and ejaculation are very much controlled by the spine; Respiration- the diaphragm which is responsible for more than half of the oxygen we breathe in is supplied by the phrenic nerve which takes its nerve roots from the third to the fifth cervical vertebrae in the spine. Just take a look at the common acronym ‘MR NIGER D’ as we were taught in high school biology lessons and you will find the clinical significance of the spine in every human activity, even in death. The different predisposing factors can be categorised into the following: gender, genetics, age, body build, and strength. Also, we have lifestyle and individual variables with other psychosocial factors which all have a role in predisposing one to develop spinal conditions.
Below are the some of the factors responsible for the abnormal alteration of spinal health: Congenital conditions:
spina bifida, congenital scoliosis, tethered spinal cord, and Klippel-Feil syndrome are a few congenital conditions caused by genetic or environmental factors. There is much that the child can do on his own, but it is important to stress the importance of maternity care and health. Eating right, antenatal care, and speaking with your physician before self-medication will help avert lots of congenital malformation in the child.
Age:
epidemiologically, young men are prone to having spinal cord injury, while degenerative disc disease’s prevalence increases with age. At an advanced age, the intervertebral disc loses its water content and are stiffer due to cellular and viscoelastic changes, making older individuals prone to disc herniation and its variants.
Trauma:
road traffic accidents, fall from heights, diving into shallow waters, gunshots or bomb explosions are a few examples of causes that could alter spinal health. Spinal cord injury, fracture of the spine, and spondylolysis are examples of conditions that can result from such trauma. Even when the individual comes out of the accident unscathed, it is very important that a thorough follow-up from the Hospital should be done. Many injuries, though asymptomatic as of now can be a source of lingering pain in the future.
43
Cancer/Neoplasm:
though it is rare, most tumors on the spine spread to a region in the spine located elsewhere in the body. Examples are chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etcetera. Early detection saves lives, and if you notice anything unusual, visit the Hospital.
Occupational/Ergonomics:
the job we do is a major determinant of how healthy our spine will be now and in the future. From how we sit, to how we lift and bend, to our prolonged stay on the computer, to the position of our neck when we text, and to wearing a poorly fitting backpack can all result in diverse negative effects on our spine. Overuse and overload are predisposing factors to postural pain syndrome, acute lumbago, paravertebral muscle spasm, disc herniation, and disc bulge.
Posture/body mechanics:
ergonomics and posture is somewhat related to spinal health. That is, an abnormal posture and staying in an awkward position can predispose one to conditions such as postural pain syndrome, flatback syndrome, herniated disc, sciatica, and scoliosis. Improper lifting techniques can predispose one to snap the back, the use of machines and employing proper lifting techniques will help mitigate this risk.
There are more complex factors that make one vulnerable to developing spinal conditions. Examples include: individual and lifestyle variables, which from research, have been linked to the prevalence of low back pain, but are not limited to the following: marital status, job satisfaction, number of dependents, smoking, occupation, and working more than an 8-hour shift. Other complex factors include: 1. Poverty: a poor individual will have to do multiple jobs to make a tangible end. Doing such menial jobs with no proper tools to make the job easier can predispose one to back pain and various types of Spondyloarthropathy. Take a look at those who carry heavy loads on their heads in the market. It is little to no surprise if such an individual comes into the clinic with cervical spondylosis.
2. No access to medical care: This is a result of a lack of proper infrastructure and inadequacy of basic amenities which is the responsibility of the Government. From the point when the back pain is just at the level of a spasm or strain of the back muscles, immediate medical attention would go a long way. However, lack of medical services leads to a worsening of the condition, and such a patient is left with a far more debilitating diagnosis and poor prognosis. Most times, it becomes already too late for such a spine to be redeemed.
3. Ignorance: some people just do not know any better. Ask some drivers if they know the futuristic implication of their long-distance traveling without any tangible break in between or ask some CEOs if they know the ideal mattress to sleep on or the most ergonomically compliant chair and workstation that ought to be in their offices.
So it can be seen that apart from genetic and body mechanics, there are way more complex factors involved in your spinal health. In the next paragraph, I will be highlighting the possible panacea and remedial interventions we can do to maintain a robust and optimally healthy spine:
44
1. Invest in ergonomics: ergonomics is simply designing and modifying the work to fit the worker and not the other way round. Different workers have varying workstations so it is not a rule that is cast in stone. From the chair which must have lumbar support to the headrest which must be of adjustable height, and even to the armrests; these are a few features to consider when procuring an office chair. Now people are investing in sit-stand desks to discourage people from being sedentary and sitting all the time. New innovations have enabled workstations to be equipped with treadmills to allow for walking while working. It might be expensive, but it will help save the spine, eliminate spending money on surgical care and reduce absenteeism.
2. Be physically active and exercise regularly: the health benefits of exercise cannot be overemphasized. The era of complete bed rest when one has back pain is long gone. Prolonged period of inactivity will not likely worsen the back pain but the back might become stiff, weak, and deconditioned. Engaging in mild to moderate levels of physical activities coupled with therapeutic exercises and stretches will go a long way to help bulletproof the spine. McKenzie stretches, Yoga, Pilates, core stabilization exercises and aerobic dance are very safe exercise regimens for you. It is best you have a personal physiotherapist to assess and determine what exercises will benefit you in the long run.
3. Keep a Healthy Weight/Eat a balanced diet: this is very important, eat right. Weight loss is very important for bariatric and overweight individuals as the extra poundage puts strain on the spinal structures. A case to point out is during pregnancy where an average of 14kg is gained in the 3rd trimester and a significant percent-
age of pregnant women come down with back pain. However, after delivering and losing the baby fats, they are almost back to normal. Exercising, intentional dieting, and intermittent fasting will go a long way in helping to achieve the ideal body weight. A consult with a clinical nutritionist or dietician will also go a long way in helping you achieve the ideal weight. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet is also very crucial in managing back pain and this diet includes vegetables, carrots, berries, watermelons, ginger, garlic, and onions to name a few. 4. Do not sit for too long: for every 45 minutes of sitting, stand up and stretch. Move around to relieve the pressure on the spine. Many times, people have asked me what about traffic congestion and I always advise, you can do some exercises while in traffic such as gentle stretches, pelvic tilts, abdominal bracing, and drawing maneuvers. If there is a standstill, you can alight from the car and stretch. For patients with a high predilection to developing back pain, it will be advisable to invest in an SUV rather than a saloon car as it has more leg room. Truth be told a lot of ergonomic innovations have been done even in saloon cars. When buying a car, check for one with good lumbar and leg support and an adjustable seat. A seat with the right balance between firmness and succulence. Any car that will make you arch your back in a C shape is not ideal for you. A car that will afford you a sitting position at 90 degrees is preferable to one where you will have outstretched legs. 5. Cut down on wearing heels: Wearing very high heels alters one’s body mechanics. This affects the natural balance by placing the heels above the toes which result in more pressure on the back side of the feet and the knees. It also puts stress on the calf muscles, the hips, and the spine moving it out of the gravity line. Therefore reducing the lordosis of the spine and flattening out the back. It is advised not to wear heels higher than 2inches. Reduce the duration of wearing heels, stretch your legs before and after wearing them and avoid heels with pointed toes.
45
Wedge and block heels are preferable, but a flat shoe is the best bet. 6. Invest in good foot wears: this cannot be overemphasized as uneven-soled shoes will do the body no good. Remember that the foot comprises 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles. The foot is indeed a sophisticated engineering machine that controls and creates ambulation. The arches, the joints, and ligaments play vital roles in the shock absorption of the foot and carrying of the body weight. Soft padded, cushioned, but not too tight shoes will do the foot a lot of good. Running shoes and work shoes should be checked to be sure they are not worn off. A consult with a physiotherapist or podiatrist will help determine the need for a foot insole. 7. De-stress for your Peace of Mind: this is very cardinal to not only your spinal health but your general body. The whole body is connected. It is important to note that stress is the body’s response to something unpleasant which could be an incident or a tough flow. As the body is stressed out, there are chemical and physical reactions to counter the stressor, cortisols and adrenaline are often released, which causes involuntary contraction of the muscles. If it happens along the neck, shoulders, and low back, and if it is for a protracted period of time, then it can lead to back pain. 8. Know the Red Flags and visit the Hospital: red flags to be cautious of include pain that radiates below the knee – there could be a nerve involvement, pain that lasts more than 2 weeks, a history of major trauma, pain in person younger than 18 and older than 50 if there is any form of incontinence, progressive weakness of the limbs. Please visit the hospital immediately and see the spine specialist to narrow the differentials into a substantive one. I plead with you to trust orthodox medicine because you have a plethora of professionals that could help you as it sometimes takes the Multidisciplinary team to help out i.e the physician, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and neurosurgeons. Please, do not go diabolical and meet some traditional bone setters for a solution. This is the spine! Do not allow anyone to step on your back. Trust medicine and your body. What is on one’s mind can metastasize into other body parts and manifest in different forms. Know your body limit. Go for spa sessions from time to time. Do not be overwhelmed by activities. Learn to rest, sleep, eat healthy food, and go on vacations. Remember one cannot pour from an empty cup, so do not be an overzealous workaholic who does not go on leave. You are not a robot. Preserve yourself first because ‘Health is Wealth’!

1. The Ordinary was founded to provide
high-quality products at a reasonable price. The only catch is that you must be familiar with your ingredients, as most formulas contain only one or two standouts designed to deliver targeted, specific results. One of their best known products is the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. Customers that have tried it and been pleased with the results have to say: “It’s a perfect product that deeply cleans and exfoliates the skin! Only 10 minutes once a week offer a clean and smooth face!”

They create 100% natural handmade products using ingredients indigenous to West Africa, suchs as: Shea & Cocoa Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil and more. One of them has to say the following about the popular product, Shea Oil - Serenity : “Loved this oil for my skin. 8. Dermatologists and consumers adore the French-owned skincare brand, La Roche-Posay. You can get their products at the drugstore, all super affordable compared to their competitor brands that offer similar ingredients. Dr. Devika Icecreamwala explains “La Roche-Posay products are allergy-tested, non-comedogenic, and clinically studied to demonstrate efficacy and safety, and most are well-tolerated, even by people with sensitive skin. People recommend their Cicaplast Baume B5 - Soothing Repairing Balm, with reviews saying: “I have such cracked skin on my hands that they often bleed and are very painful. I’ve tried so many moisturisers and treatments but nothing ever worked. Using this every morning and night has healed my hands in 4 days!” 9. CeraVe, founded in New York City in 2005, is one of the most popular drugstore skincare brands due to its affordable price point and effective formulas.Tom Allison, CeraVe’s senior vice president and global head of professional marketing, said: “Through our early research with dermatologists, we learned that key components of the skin barrier—ceramides—were deficient in skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dry skin, which led to a compromised skin barrier.” This led the founders to create a brand of skincare products specifically catering to people suffering from chronic skin conditions. Their Moisturising Cream was one of their first releases, and it continues to help people all over the world today. 10. Narganics is another Nigerian brand, established in 2016, with mostly natural, organic products. They are handmade from scratch in limited quantities to guarantee freshness and quality in every item. All of their formulations are original, produced and tested by the brand on humans rather than animals as they are proudly cruelty-free. One of the best-sellers on their website is the African Black Soap, a product that is achieved from the ash of locally harvested African plants. One customer who recommends it says: “In just a few days of use, the African black soap cleared the acne issues on my face and my skin is gradually glowing!”

Dating tips:
What Men Don’t Tell You
There is more to men than just the “hard guy” trope. We, men, are simple creatures but generally misunderstood. It is quite intriguing when you ask your partner what he’s really thinking about? And he responds with a casual “oh, nothing”, but you know there’s something else going on in his mind. There are some things men just don’t want to share. But “what are those things?“
Not everything he says is what you think it means: When men say things, don’t actually jump into conclusion. Saying a word might actually mean something different in corresponding action. For example, Mike and Anna are in a relationship. Anna feels she should add up some weight and seeks Mikes opinion on it. Mike responds saying, “Even if you get fat I would still love you” but it doesn’t mean “I would still be attracted to you, want to have sex with you, and be happy being seen with you if you got fat.” Men want to be complimented: Men want to know what you think about them. They also want their partner to know the influence they are having on others. So complimenting a guy on how he impacts you is perhaps the most meaningful way you can
‘
reach him deeply. It lets him know what kind of man you think he is. And what you think of him matters a lot. That he likes and cherishes his quiet time: In the early days of the relationship, it is normal for a guy to want to keep the conversation going. I mean it is natural to be nervous about a lull in the banter when you are first learning about each other and discovering what you have in common. But in a long term relationship, especially marriages, silence sometimes should feel natural. Instead of being scared of running out of things to say, it is important to embrace the quieter moments. Sometimes men genuinely like quiet time and silence, and no it is not because they are upset or despise their partner. It could be the result of a lot going on with him and silence is a decompression time. That all men don’t have the same taste in women: Unfortunately there are several people without a “type”. They are those who date people for abstract concepts like “who they are inside” or “love”. Most men will continue to date essentially the same person, again and again, until death or marriage do them part. The feeling that men are always ready for sex: Men are not always ready for sex. However, they agree to it even when
50
they are not in the mood. Most times, it is to salvage the woman from being seen as demanding for sex which is regarded as a societal misnormer. Men won’t tell you what they fantasize about: Most men fantasize about sex most especially those under the age of 60 at least once a day. They also think more about casual meeting with the opposite sex than women do. But most times, thinking is not the same as doing. Even if a man fantasize about sex, it doesn’t mean he wants it. Men forget things faster than ladies: Most men tend to move on more quickly. So while a woman might still want to talk about last night squabbles, a man may have have already forgotten about it. Actions backs the word “I love you”: In relationship, some men prefer to show their feelings through actions rather than words. A man might say “I love you” by fixing things around the house, tidying up the yard, or even taking out the trash, just practically doing a nything that makes his partner happy. He may stray away when his needs are not met: When a man doesn’t feel loved and appreciated in a relationship, he may turn elsewhere for satisfaction. For some they may develop addiction for sports, recreational activities like playing video games, swimming etc, while some may cheat. That sex is very important: Most men find sexual intimacy to be the most satisfying within a committed relationship . For many sex is a very important act between two committed people. One reason is that long-term partners know how to please one another better than strangers do.
most times unless you tell him. Most often ladies feel uncomfortable talking about they like and don’t like. Men like it when you clearly tell them what you like in a way that doesn’t bruise their ego, because he knows he will feel good if you feel good. Insecure moment/Anxiety grief: Most men feel insecure, not knowing what might happen next. Such expression might often be a facial expression, often suppressive and not outwardly reflective. It might be as a result of work stress, arguments brewing from the relationship. Its is often advisable for a woman to help him relax and stay focused, comfort , and words of advice might be of great help too. Talks about your male friends are prohibited: Some men can be possessive when they are in a relationship. When they hear you talk about your male friends, it might be kind of gross. You might not realize , but your partner might be thinking your male friends might have already had sex with you. That they won’t cheat: Most men won’t tell you how they feel about cheating or double-dating. But the truth is that some might cheat and may not want to get involved with someone that cheats too.
those
He keeps tabs of very important dates: When a man is in a committed relationship, he keeps tabs of very important calendar dates that are significant to his partner. Such dates might include Birthday dates, Marriage anniversary dates etc. So as to avoid issues in relationships , most keep tabs of important event dates.
Being in a relationship can often be a tasking job. But with a show of understanding, maturity, and care, it will almost sail perfectly. Being in a relationship can be one of the sweetest gifts of life. The feeling of being loved and also loved in return is priceless. Putting those tips that have been listed above will help bolster your relationship and marriages and also create that long-lasting affair we all want.
They want to please their partners: Most men want to please their partners , but he wont know what you want

Fashion
Why
as SelfExpression Should Be Embraced
s fashion about you or others? This question arises with regard to the loathing of some people by quite a reasonable majority on account of the fashion styles they have chosen for themselves. They are labeled out of hand with supposedly unwholesome stereotypes. One glaring example is the wearing of earrings by men on one or both ears. In a Facebook post, people were asked to write one fact about men who wear earrings. The reactions were varied but hardly favorable : • I hate them! (Period) • They are homosexuals.( Don’t even argue it) • God should add them menstrual pains too. ( It was a heartfelt prayer) • They are yahoo boys. • They can do and undo. • A very arrogant set of people. • Most of them are church-mouse broke. There were more bitter reactions, so bitter you wondered why anyone would take what had nothing to do with them so personal. And of course, some bible verses were quoted. Some men who wear earrings also commented, explaining that it was just personal taste and preference and that apart from that, they were normal people who could be good, bad or both. When DENOLA GREY emerged winner of the Best Dressed category for men at the AMVCA, some comments bordered on his perceived “cross-identity”. In the words of a commentator, “a boy wears a woman shoe and behaves like a woman and he is given award for men. What a confused generation.” This commentary informs the general perception of most people who fail to see fashion for what it is. So, the questions pop up again: Is fashion about you or about others? Assuming you didn’t need any validation from anyone, would you modify your fashion sense to match your idiosyncratic tastes better? Is it worth it getting all splenetic because someone’s fashion taste doesn’t align with yours? It’s fashion. A tool for self-expression and assertion of identity. Life goes beyond us. Hence the need to accept the unfamiliar in fashion.

Is worth the hype et’s talk about Yoga, since everyone is doing so too. From family and friends, to celebs and influencers, it seems there’s no getting away from the subject. The internet is buzzing about the immense benefits of Yoga, your neighbour swears by the power of a certain pose to cure backaches, and even your aunt credits her youthful skin to her Asanas (Yoga poses). You just can’t get away from the hype. Well, you’re not alone. According to the IYF (International Yoga Federation), over 300 million people practice Yoga globally. Contrary to popular belief, this huge number is not made up of only Indians and Westerners. Did you know that Nigeria is one of the fastest growing hubs for Yoga in Africa, and that joining a Yoga community is only a few phone clicks away? In fact, there i s a large Yoga community in Africa called the African Yoga Project that operates in 15 African countries. Shocking right? If you think that Yoga is only a passing trend that would be forgotten in a few years, think again. Over the last few decades, medical practitioners have conducted several researches on the benefits of Yoga, all reaching the same conclusion that incorporating regular Yoga into daily lifestyle, is a key to overall well being. Indubitably, it is no passing craze. Now, all these buzz and overall eagerness to jump into the Yoga wagon begs an important question - is Yoga really worth the hype? The origins of Yoga can be traced back to ancient India over 5000 years ago, although some researchers believe that it was also practiced in Egypt as far back as 1000 years ago. In ancient India, Yoga was practised more as a spiritual branch of the Hindu religion, where simple meditations, breath control and specific bodily postures and movements, were practised for health, discipline and relaxation. The earliest Yoga scriptures described the practice as a union between a man’s consciousness and that of the universe, creating a perfect harmony between the mind and body; man and nature. The modern form of Yoga, which is widely practised has however deviated from the traditional ones, which focused more on meditation and detachment from worldly attachments. THE RED LINE BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA AND MENTAL HEALTH haring a funny tweet, liking an Instagram video, joining a TikTok challenge, watching a YouTube video and even taking a Snap chat picture. These ordinary features of our beloved social media apps seem like innocent and fun everyday activities. Of course, they are. Modern humanity would be nothing without social media. These apps do not only keep us entertained. They also help us to communicate, learn new things, share information, make connections and more. On the surface, these activities help humans all over the world to adapt easily to the demands of an ever-changing world. Beneath the surface, social media is all of those and more. What happens when these ordinary activities become so addictive, that they take over our lives? When does the line between social media and mental health begin to blur? In 2015, research on the relationship between social media and mental health found that nearly half of psychiatric patients in the world spent considerably longer amounts of time on social media. Of the 58.4% of the world’s population that uses social media, about 25% of those who have more than one social media account, feel the impulsive need to check them at least once every three hours to avoid anxiety. Perhaps, these statistics do not alarm you. But when you compare your behavior on social media to those of people who suffer from social and other anxiety disorders, you begin to see a correlation. The following are some of the similar behaviours: Spending above six hours on social media every day. Withdrawing from family and friends. Lying about the amount of time spent on social media. Stopping to check social media in the middle of an activity or conversation. Having an overwhelming desire to share something on social media. Feeling the impulsive desire to check social media to avoid missing out. Neglecting or losing interest in important aspects of daily life. Among the numerous negative impacts of social media on mental health is addiction. Constant use of social media has been likened to an addictive drug. Like a drug, you think having a quick fix would help, but it actually makes you feel worse and becomes more addictive as you spend more and more time on it. This in turn results in low quality of sleep. Not only are you going to bed later, but you’re also sleeping less and worse. Having bad quality sleep has been proven to worsen and trigger mental health problems. Let’s not even get started on low self-esteem and depression. Imagine waking up to an Instagram story of someone who is at least ten years younger than you are, but making more money in a week than you earn in a year. Or seeing your best friend from kindergarten posting the third car she had bought in the same year. Jealousy and envy trigger low self-esteem and you begin to believe that you are not doing enough with your life. Of course, most people on social media only show the glamorous sides of their lives, but the average human brain is not conditioned to consider that. Hence, when you close your eyes
57
to the reality around you and only see the perfect life that is shown across most social media platforms, low self-esteem and depression creep into your life to become your closest companions. Seeing filtered slices of someone’s perfect life would take you down a dangerous road of comparison and ultimately make you feel worse about yourself. Another way in which social media takes a toll on an individual’s mental health is through Cyberbullying. A person suffering from cyberbullying might experience several emotional and mental issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, acting out violently and suicidal ideation. Also, frequent exposure to filtered and photoshopped images could lead to self-consciousness and a mental health condition called body dysmorphia. The red line between social media and mental health is a very thin and blurry one, and many have lost their lives trying to weave through it. According to a US study on the suicide rates
among adolescents and young adults, suicide rates among teenagers have seen a drastic increase from 2007 to 2017. The research found that the main reason for this increase is that social media has become a prevalent way of life. A way of life that could ultimately take the life of a person who just wanted to share a funny tweet, like an Instagram picture or join a TikTok challenge. After reading these negative effects, perhaps, you are ready to remove all social media apps from your phone. Relax. You don’t have to burn your phone… yet. Here are some ways to protect your mental health from the dangers of social media. One, drop that phone and get some sunshine! After reading this article of course. Set a limit to when and where you use social media.
58
Do not let social media replace your real life. Remember that most people on social media only show their best lives, so don’t compare yourself to them. Don’t scroll through social media first thing in the morning or just before going to bed. Get rid of negative content. Remember, there are two sides to everything, so don’t demonize social media. For a person who knows how to use social media in the right way, life gets easier and better. The good side of social media outweighs the bad.
