Dear Friends, It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the 2012-13 UNCW Presents, Arts in Action and Leadership Lecture Series season. Our trademark of excellence and eclecticism continues this celebratory season at UNCW amid a host of spectacular world music, provocative opera, exhilarating jazz, old-time bluegrass and much more! For more than 20 years, UNCW Presents has provided our students, faculty, staff and community members, of all ages, with the best of the arts and humanities from the world over. It has been our goal to enlighten you with new concepts and art forms, as well as expose you to once-forgotten, old world traditions.
New This Year Arts in Action Performance Series performances are held at 7 P.M. in Kenan Auditorium. The Leadership Lecture Series is held on Mondays at 7 P.M. in the Burney Center.
It is a privilege to offer my heartfelt thanks to you, our patrons, for your support in keeping live performing arts alive and well in our region. I am always humbled by the collaborative relationships with the dozens of campus and regional partners we work with to bring the arts to life for our campus and community. To the Cape Fear region and UNCW family, which values cultural awareness, intellectual curiosity and community engagement - Thank you! Finally, and most importantly, thank you to our students, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support this important programming. Our office functions as a student laboratory for arts and programs management through which we connect to various academic programs. To our hundreds of student volunteers, interns and our thousands of student patrons, who will be the next generation of arts leaders – Thank you for continuing to carry the torch! Please note that the curtain time for Arts in Action Performance Series performances will now be at 7 p.m. and that the Leadership Lecture Series will now take place at UNCW’s Burney Center. I hope that you will enjoy this upcoming season of ‘greats’ as we celebrate the past two decades and look forward to many years to come. See you at the theater!
UNCW Presents has provided a venue for students and the surrounding community to engage in and enjoy the arts… and continues to foster North Carolina’s culture through its renowned life enriching performances and lectures. Royal Drummers and Dancers of
Burundi “…a celebration of ability…sheer pleasure.” —New York Times
Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012 7 P.M. • Kenan Auditorium
$22 General public, $5 Students Save $4 if you Choose 3 or more events! Co-sponsored by UNCW Office of International Programs
Offering the “ultimate African drum experience”, Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi are one of the greatest percussion ensembles in the world, born out of centuries old tradition. Since the 1960s, they have toured the world, bringing their unique influence to world music. Traditionally, the drummers travelled with Burundi’s kings and played at ceremonies such as births, funerals and coronations. In Burundi, drums represent regeneration, and the techniques the drummers employ have been passed down from father to son for centuries. Energy and sharp rhythms will make this performance the ultimate African drum experience!
We congratulate and thank UNCW Presents for twenty years of superb arts and culture by some of the world’s most talented lecturers and performers. Our DREAMS students have benefited tremendously through UNCW Presents outreach programs; from special dance clinics conducted by master dancers to attending inspiring performances. UNCW Presents has enriched the lives of our DREAMS students and families who otherwise would not have the chance to experience the thrill of live top-notch performances. DREAMS of Wilmington

Squonk Opera
Mayhem and Majesty “A blazingly unique spectacle! A flood of contraptions, visual jokes and glorious eccentric music that would even stretch Tim Burton’s imagination.” —Time Out New York
Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 7 P.M. • Kenan Auditorium
$22 General public, $5 Students Save $4 if you Choose 3 or more events!
Squonk Opera’s Mayhem and Majesty is the latest in a series of their truly surreal, genre-busting feats of musical theater. The show “behaves like a three-dimensional Rorschach test,” conveying meaning through music and a visual symphony of performance art, stage settings and theatrics, incorporating shadow puppetry, kinetic machines, cameras and video screens. Mayhem and Majesty is accessible modern opera at its most spellbinding.
Squonk Opera will host master classes and artist talks February 26 and 27. For details, visit www.uncw.edu/presents.

Residency activities range from master classes and workshops to interviews and panel discussions. Designed to enrich and add a new perspective to performances and lectures, these activities are free and open to the public and are held on the UNCW campus in addition to visits to local non-profit organizations and schools. For updates and in-depth information about artist residencies, visit www.uncw.edu/presents and click the Above & Beyond link.
UNCW Presents is an excellent example of how investing resources into the arts benefits the community at many levels, including creating jobs and generating revenue.
