“I loved everything about UND and being a student-athlete there. I look back on those times as some of the best in my life. I learned so much, not only as an athlete, but also as a person.” — UND Hall of Fame runner Marie (Crep) Suchy (‘94)

Strength Training MISSION
It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.
Philosophy
We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff. The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 200506 season.

Sports Medicine One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.
Steve Westereng
With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.
Director of Sports Medicine
The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

Community Involvement Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities.

Dr. Robert Kelley began serving as the 11th president of the University of North Dakota on July 1, 2008. Kelley served as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and as professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming, since 1999. Prior to that, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was also a professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine. At the University of New Mexico, he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean, as well as other faculty capacities. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges, chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also recently served as the principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley. He and his wife, Marcia Jean, have four children.
Sue Jeno, an associate professor of physical therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. She has held the position since November 2006. Jeno has served as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee for six years and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. Athletics Administration
Athletics director Brian Faison
Brian Faison begins his second year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 18 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network. North Dakota student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: 12 student-athletes were named academic all-district and a school-record six were named Academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships and 80 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors. Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set a record; football had the largest opening day crowed in the history of the program and set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average attendance. Competitively, North Dakota teams also enjoyed outstanding seasons: Men’s hockey won the MacNaughton Cup, its league-leading WCHA championship; women’s basketball went undefeated at home on its way to an 18-win season; men’s basketball had its first winning season in three years and volleyball went from a record of 6-23 the previous year to 24-8 last season. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as assistant vice president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

One of the longest-tenured coaches in the history of Sioux athletics, the 2009-10 season marks the 25th year of Dick Clay’s decorated coaching career at UND. During the 2009 cross country season, Clay mentored Great West conference runner-up Brittany Brenny, who earned her second straight all-conference first team nod. She was joined by teammate and secondteam selection Katherine Enabnit. Last season, UND’s first as a Division I program, Clay guided the Sioux to a third-place finish at the inaugural Great West Conference Cross Country Championship, where three of his runners earned allconference honors: Brenny (first team), Mandy Gefroh (first) and Emily Emerson (second).

Great West Conference
Ed Grom GWC Commissioner
The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate institutions that range geographically from New Jersey to Texas to California. The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giving each school added exposure - both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions’ substantial alumni base.
The conference, which began as a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members.
UND president Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.
Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008. These seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league. In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf. Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin league play in 2009-10. Where are they now? Melanie carvell (rixen) 1980-83 Melanie Carvell (Rixen) began her collegiate career at the University of North Dakota as a freshman in 1979. She chose to attend UND for its academics and the physical therapy program. Carvell competed as a member of the Fighting Sioux cross country and track teams from 1980-83. After a year working in Edinburgh, Scotland, following graduation, Carvell’s professional career as a physical therapist brought her back home to North Dakota where, for the past 25 years, she has worked at Medcenter One in Bismarck. For the past 15 years she has directed Medcenter One’s Women’s Health Center, an outpatient physical therapy clinic that is combined with a women’s fitness center. The job is a perfect fit for the former Sioux who says she was “not a standout athlete during my years at UND”. There are those who may differ with her self-assessment, especially considering her post collegiate athletic career. Carvell continued to run and competed in several marathons after graduation. “I also took up cycling and swimming and started doing triathlons.,” Carvell says. There may be no greater understatement. Carvell’s post-collegiate athletic career has taken her to Switzerland, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Canada as a Team USA member of nine World Triathlon and Duathlon championship races. She is a four-time Team USA Triathlon AllAmerican, a Duathlon World Championship bronze medalist, and an Olympic Trials 40K time trial cyclist. She has also been named North Dakota’s Sportscasters/Sportswriters Athlete of the Year and North Dakota’s Prairie Rose Athlete of the Year. Carvell’s passion for competition and fitness are tied closely with her professional career where she has also received the “Picture of Health” award for being top leader in the State of North Dakota in Women’s Health. Carvell says she “loves being a physical therapist” and has had several great opportunities to work in pediatrics, home health and rehab, cardiac disease prevention and women’s health, as well as corporate wellness and fitness programming. Carvell is also a motivational speaker on health and fitness issues. 56
With three grown children, Carvell and her husband, Charles, a 1979 UND law school graduate who works in the North Dakota Attorney General’s office, also have an active family life. Daughter Kelsey recently graduated from Iowa State with a master’s degree in electrical engineering. Son Robert is in his first year of residency in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Great Falls, Mont., and son Elliot is a sophomore at the University of North Dakota. The family stays active with cycling, running, swimming, skiing and snowboarding. When asked how her experiences as a UND student-athlete become applicable to her life after leaving UND, Carvell said: “Besides the balance needed for a good, happy life, I developed a love of running and found that it provided me with a release from the stresses of professional life and parenting, and actually gave me extra energy. I also learned how important being a mentor to others can be and have strived to help others get involved in physical activities to develop better lifestyles.” Some of Carvell’s fondest memories of UND are as a student-athlete.
of great significance in her life. According to Carvell, being a student-athlete not only helped lead towards a healthier lifestyle but was a means of connecting with the campus community and developing pride in oneself and the school. Carvell says that being a student-athlete pays off down the road. “My career today would not have developed as it is without my background in competitive athletics as well as my formal education in physical therapy.” Carvell continues to stay in contact with her former teammates. Three of those teammates live in Bismarck and have been lifelong friends. They still see one another and run, cross country ski and cycle together. As far as advice to current UND student-athletes Carvell says, “Enjoy your sport. Enjoy your teammates. Savor this time of relative freedom. Have fun and love what you do and better results will follow. Be good to others. “Awards, accomplishments and statistics will fade quickly and are largely forgotten in time, but people will always remember if you took time to be a mentor and to help others.”
“I loved being a part of the team, and the balance that being a student-athlete provided to my overall college experience. The physical therapy program was very demanding but gave me a top-notch education. Having the daily stress relief that athletics and running provided really made my college years healthier and happier.” “(Then-women’s cross country coach) Mike Grandall was a wonderful coach and mentor who provided support during my years on the track and cross country team. Jeanne (Likar) Dekrey (’83) was also a great mentor who took the time to be supportive of all her teammates. We had some great athletes and good performances, but mostly I remember the friendships and the support of the teams during those college years.” Carvell believes that being a student-athlete has been
Carvell is a four-time Team USA Triathlon All-American and a Duathlon World Championship bronze medalist.
