strength training MISSION
It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.
Philosophy
We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff. The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 200506 season.

SPORTS MEDICINE One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.
Steve Westereng
With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.
Director of Sports Medicine
The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities.

Kelley served as the Dean of the College of Health Sciences and as professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming, since 1999. Prior to that, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he was also a professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine. Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges, chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also recently served as the principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley. He and his wife, Marcia Jean, have four children.
Sue Jeno, an associate professor of physical therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. She has held the position since November 2006. Jeno has served as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee for six years and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. Athletics director Brian Faison
Brian Faison begins his second year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 18 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network. North Dakota student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: 12 student-athletes were named academic all-district and a school-record six were named Academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships and 80 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors. Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set a record; football had the largest opening day crowed in the history of the program and set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average attendance. Competitively, North Dakota teams also enjoyed outstanding seasons: Men’s hockey won the MacNaughton Cup, its league-leading WCHA championship; women’s basketball went undefeated at home on its way to an 18-win season; men’s basketball had its first winning season in three years and volleyball went from a record of 6-23 the previous year to 24-8 last season. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as assistant vice president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

2009 cross country review UND’s final tune-up prior to the conference meet came at the University of Arkansas and the 21st annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. Running against some of the best competition in the country, Rosseau was UND’s top finisher in a meet that would serve as top-notch preparation for the Great West Conference Championship. In keeping with the rest of the season, it was LaBlanc and Rosseau leading the way at the conference meet. LaBlanc, in particular, was outstanding en route to the first all-conference honor of his career. LaBlanc clocked in at 26:39.33, good enough for a seventh-place finish and a berth on the 2009 All-Great West Conference first team.
Junior Josh LaBlanc earned All-Great West Conference first team honors after placing seventh at the conference meet.
It was the final collegiate cross country race for seniors Rosseau and Jeremy Jones, a Grand Forks native.
They will pass the torch to an experienced group which, in 2009, also included juniors Absey (Grand Forks), Joss BlatherThe 2009 cross country season was sparked Cory wick (Bottineau, N.D.) and Michael Warweg by the return to the team of Josh LaBlanc (In(Rosemount, Minn.), sophomores Tyler Rose ternational Falls, Minn.), who did not compete (Brainerd, Minn.) and Carl Sedgeman (Sauk in 2008 due to commitments to an academic Centre, Minn.) and freshman David Niday internship. (Richfield, Minn.) LaBlanc, a junior, teamed with senior Kyle Rosseau (Eagan, Minn.) to give head coach Mike Grandall a formidable 1-2 punch atop the Sioux roster. Rosseau was coming off a 2008 All-Great West Conference season.

The return of LaBlanc paid immediate dividends when the Sioux opened the season by hosting the annual Ron Pynn Invitational at the Ray Richards Golf Course. In his first meet in a year, LaBlanc took runner-up honors and paced UND to a second-place finish. It was one of four meets in which LaBlanc was UND’s top runner. In the other two meets, it would be Rosseau leading the charge. Following a week off after the Ron Pynn Invitational, LaBlanc led the Sioux to a fourth-place finish at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. With the calendar turning to October, LaBlanc placed eighth in the individual standings at the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings.
Junior Kyle Rosseau was UND’s top runner on two occasions and placed 20th at the GWC Championship.
UND returned to the Mount Rushmore State the following week for the South Dakota Tim Young Open in Vermillion. There it was Rosseau leading the pack for the Sioux, enjoying his best meet of the season with a fourthplace finish.

great west conference
Ed Grom GWC Commissioner
The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate institutions that range geographically from New Jersey to Texas to California. The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giving each school added exposure - both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions’ substantial alumni base.
The conference, which began as a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members.
UND president Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.
Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008. These seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league. In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf. Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin league play in 2009-10. As the conference began planning for multi-team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field. Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions. The associate members, plus NJIT, make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley play in the West. Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined great west conference Administration as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing members. Seattle University was added as an associate member in Ed Grom, Commissioner cross country and track and field in 2009. P.O. Box 9344 Naperville, IL 60567 Officially announced Feb. 25, 2004, charter members of the Great West P: (630) 428-4492 Football Conference were California Polytechnic State University; UniF: (630) 548-0705 versity of California, Davis; North Dakota State University; University E-mail: grom@gwconference.org of Northern Colorado; South Dakota State University; and Southern Utah University. Conference competition began on Sept. 4, 2004 with UC Davis scoring a 52-0 win over South Dakota State and Northern Colorado notching a 15-13 win over North Dakota State.
The Great West continues its proud tradition in football and has been rated as one of the best in Football Championship Subdivision and ahead of Football Bowl Subdivision leagues such as the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt. The Great West Conference recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include players of the week; all-conference teams; an academic all-conference team; and player, newcomer and coach of the year awards. The league also crowns team champions for both regular season and post-season competition.

und ron pynn invitational By Jackie DeMolee, UND Athletics
Ron Pynn was an educator at the University of North Dakota for 29 years in political science, but he didn’t only shape the minds of students in the classroom. He has projected his love for track and field and cross country onto the programs at UND. Pynn has been a long time supporter of cross country and track and field. The Ron Pynn Invitational, UND’s annual cross country meet, was established in 2002 to honor Pynn for his many contributions to the teams, including travelling with the teams for support, working events and financially supporting the program. He said that he’s always had a passion for the sport and the studentathletes involved. Ron Pynn
“It [running] takes a special brand of discipline,” said Pynn. “What drives them [athletes] to run drives them to succeed in other areas of their life.” This is only one of the many reasons Pynn feels so passionate about the program at UND. “It’s been exciting each and every year,” said UND men’s cross country and track and field head coach Mike Grandall. “It’s great to have him back.” Pynn uses the Invitational as an opportunity to visit the University and friends. “I think the world of the coaches,” he said. “The way they treat the athletes, but not just as UND athletes, but as students too.”
The 2008 cross country team at the Ron Pynn Invitational.
Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the Ron Pynn Invitational. The course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest. The Division I transition has changed the Invitational a little, but it doesn’t change the meaning behind the name of the event or how important the event is to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and Pynn.
“What drives them to run drives them to succeed in other areas of life.” — Ron Pynn
Pynn currently resides in Berlington, Vt., but makes the trek back to UND each year for the Invitational.
