Notable academic achievements in 2010-11 • UND placed 110 student-athletes on the Great West Conference (GWC) and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) all-academic teams, including a team-record 16 men’s hockey student-athletes. • UND’s student-athletes owned a collective 3.089 GPA in 2010-11. • Sixty-four percent of UND’s student-athletes boasted a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester alone. • Former softball and hockey standout Casie Hanson was one of eight national recipients of the prestigious NCAA Top VIII Award. The George and Arlene Schubert Athletics Academic Center provides a comfortable and centrallylocated site to aid in the promotion of academics for all student-athletes.

UND athletics prides itself on the academic excellence of its student-athletes, whose athletic achievements are matched by academic distinction on a yearly basis. The George and Arlene Schubert Athletics Academic Center, which opened in April 2008, serves as a study center for student-athletes and is conveniently located in the Hyslop Sports Center. Academic services director Amanda Hajdu oversees the study center, which features 12 state-of-the-art, desktop computers and provides an excellent location for student-athletes to utilize between classes for valuable daytime study. The academic center is also available on demand to student-athletes for evening study table. Amanda Hajdu

UND’s student-athletes also have access to a variety of laptop computers for use on road trips, further emphasizing a department-wide commitment to academics.

• Junior goalie Brad Eidsness received the NCAA Elite 88 Award for men’s hockey. • UND’s women’s golf program received public recognition from the NCAA for its outstanding multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR). UND’s APR ranked in the top 10 percent of all Division I women’s golf programs, which accounts for the 2006-07 through 2009-10 academic years. • The women’s swimming and diving program ranked fourth among the 89 NCAA Division I teams named to the 2010 College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All America Team in February.

2011 NORTH DAKOTA soccer MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

Philosophy

We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

Steve Westereng

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities. In 2010-11 alone, UND student-athletes logged nearly 7,100 hours of community service.

pRESIDENT Dr. Robert Kelley

Dr. Robert Kelley began serving as UND’s 11th president July 1, 2008. He had been dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999. Before then, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine, both at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the University of New Mexico, he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean, as well as other faculty capacities. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges, chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also served as principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming. He and his wife, Marcia, who was a lecturer in the University of Wyoming Department of Communication Disorders, have four children.

Sue Jeno, an associate professor of physical therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association. She has held the position since November 2006. Jeno has served as a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee for six years and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. Jeno is a former NCAA Division I student-athlete and coach. After competing for the University of Michigan synchronized swimming team, she graduated and served as a coach for the Wolverines for two seasons.

Athletics director Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his fourth year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. In leading UND Athletics through the Division I transition, alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Fighting Sioux Club and endowment giving have enjoyed another record year; volleyball had a second record-breaking season at the turnstile, while women’s and men’s hockey both finished second in the nation in attendance. Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons resulting in two conference regular season championships, three conference post-season tournaments championships, four conference studentathletes of the year, three All-Americans, two national players of the year, a fifth trip to the Frozen Four in the past seven years, and a second place finish in the all-sports standings of the Great West Conference. In the classroom, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the fall and spring semesters; women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, men’ track and field and men’s golf were all recognized nationally for their academic performance, while UND student-athletes received the prestigious NCAA Top VIII and NCAA Elite 88 awards. Faison helped secure membership in the Big Sky Conference for 14 of UND sports. Competition will begin with the 2012-13 school year. And, he played a leadership role in the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference joining Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth and Nebraska Omaha. Conference play begins in 2013. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (19781979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

2011 NORTH DAKOTA Soccer

E

ntering the 2011 season, the North Dakota soccer team has set its ultimate goal of exiting the Great West Conference with a championship.

In their final year before entering the Big Sky Conference in 2012, the Sioux feel they are primed and ready to compete for the GWC title. “It is our third and final year in the Great West Conference,” fourth-year head coach Kristen Gay said. “I think we need to end on a high this season to have some sort of confidence heading into the Big Sky next season. The Big Sky is a great soccer conference and in order to compete we need to raise our game a little bit. But at the same time we can’t lose sight of our goal this season, which is a Great West title.” The Sioux are also in their final year of transition from Division II to Division I and have shown a consistent progression during that time. After going 0-5-1 in league play in 2009, a season highlighted by a quarterfinals win over top-seeded New Jersey Institute of Technology, UND went 4-2 in the regular season during conference play last year and advanced to the championship game in the GWC tournament. “The transition has been difficult but we have seen little gains and last season kind of left a bad taste in our mouth,” Gay said. “We got off to a slow start but finished strong in the conference and the conference tournament. The kids played their hearts out

and were unfortunate to come out on the short end of the stick losing in (penalty kicks) in the championship game, but I think we have the chance to do something special this year.” After posting an overall record of 6-13 last year, the Sioux are ready to take another step forward. One of the team’s main reasons for optimism is its strong core of returning players, including nine of 11 starters. “We are definitely excited about the numbers we have coming back,” Gay said. “We have 16 returning from last year’s team and eight freshmen. All of the freshmen have been very good early into camp, but our returners set the standard and definitely have something to prove after last season.” With a challenging 19-game regular season slate, including six at their home confines of Bronson Field, the Sioux will face plenty of tests in preparation for their end of the year run at a conference championship. The Sioux open the season on Friday, Aug. 19, at home against perennial rival South Dakota, but for the first time in both program’s history, it will not be a conference game as the Coyotes are now competing in the Summit League. “It is definitely something to look forward to,” Gay said. “I think the games between us and South Dako-

2010 season outlook

ta have always been competitive, down to the wire, and usually one-goal games. To have them in Grand Forks for opening weekend has us excited and just being at home on opening weekend is nice as well. It should be a good way to start off the season.” After their season-opening game against the Coyotes, the Sioux are on the road for six non-conference games before returning home for a pair of games against Nebraska Omaha and Montana on Sept. 16 and 18, respectively. UND also has regional rivals North Dakota State and South Dakota State on the schedule in September in non-conference action. “Our schedule is definitely tough,” Gay said. “Our non-conference schedule should prepare us well for our conference games. We open the season at home against South Dakota, but then are on the road for a while playing some unfamiliar opponents, which is good for us to see someone different.” UND takes on Delaware State on Sept. 29, which is one of two games that will kick off the Great West Conference schedule. The GWC dropped its twodivision format and now will have all six teams face each other once in the regular season. This makes for plenty of long trips, but a chance to compete against all GWC opponents before the tournament. “We are all over the place this season,” Gay said. “We are going to Delaware, South Carolina, Houston, Wisconsin and then to New Jersey for the conference tournament. Those aren’t close trips by any means. We have a couple bus trips in there that are 10-plus hours a piece, but it comes with the territory. This is what they signed up for, but at the same time I kind of like the road games. We don’t have as many distractions.” “It is going to be tough but at the same time it is a gauge against those teams that have been in Division I for a long time and we can see how far we have come and still how far we have to go.”

Junior Rhaya Ballon advances the ball.

Senior Veronika Zischka battles for positioning. Leading the way will be captains Sheri Stapf (Lakeville, Minn.) and Kelsey Zachman (Mahtomedi, Minn.), and a handful of seniors comprising of Zachman, Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.), Caitlin Prunty (Rochester, Minn.) and Veronika Zischka (Calgary, Alberta. “I think we are in a good spot when it comes to leadership,” Gay said. “They understand what our goal is this season and will be there to make sure we get things done, and that the younger kids understand what this is all about.” A majority of the roster is underclassmen, though which bodes well for the future as joining the four seniors are four juniors, eight sophomores and eight freshmen. The Sioux coaching staff likes what they have seen so far in camp. “I think we are a little bit ahead of schedule if we were to compare the two preseasons from this year and last year,” Gay said. “Things are looking really good. We are finally to the point where we have a solid class coming in, have a solid group of returners, and if we can keep everybody healthy and on the field we should be in good shape.” The underclassmen have brought a lot of intensity into the preseason, creating a number of position battles and made a few scrimmages look more like late-season games rather than preseason practices.

“I think our bottom got stronger and the gap between the top players and the rest of our roster has closed a little bit which is good,” Gay said. “To be able to look down the bench and put people in that could probably start at other programs will be good for us down the stretch.”

those spots.

Of UND’s 13 losses a year ago, eight of them came by one goal and 12 by two goals or less. In order to get over that hump and come out on the right end of some of those closely-contested games, the Sioux will be looking for more scoring and it will start with their forwards.

One of the biggest question marks on the roster is in net as UND has three goalkeepers on the roster, but a combined zero starts between them. The lone returner is Alex Ciaccio (Minnetonka, Minn.), who has played in two games, stopping all three shots faced while freshmen Kristi Hestdalen (Pierre, S.D.) and Mariah Paz (Riverside, Calif.) will compete for playing time.

“In terms of our front-runners, their goal is to put the ball into the back of the net and we struggled with that at times last year,” Gay said. “We increased our speed a little bit and have always been pretty physical and strong.” Loomis will be looked upon to lead the way up front. She was tied for the team lead last year with six goals and 18 points. She currently ranks fourth all-time in program history with 20 goals, tied for third all-time with 15 assists and fourth all-time with 55 points.

“Defensively we have a pretty strong core,” Gay said. “They have played a lot of quality minutes in the past and we will look for our midfielders to own the game for us a little bit by dictating the pace.”

“We have three really good goalkeepers,” Gay said. “I think the competition there is going to be good. It has been fairly even this preseason. If we were to play tomorrow, I would say it would probably be a bit of a rotating door, but we would like to get

The Sioux will also look for a big season out of junior Rhaya Ballon (Rogers, Minn.). She connected for three goals and three assists last season for a twoyear total of seven goals, five assists and 19 points. “It is pretty wide open up front,” Gay said. “We have Senior Kelsey Zachman attempts a cross pass. some returners that can play up there in Loomis and Ballon but also some freshmen like Megan Anderson, who has looked pretty some consistency and just have one player back good this preseason. If we can mix it up and come there. Each of them brings their own strengths to up with the right combination of players starting the game, so it will probably depend on who we are and coming off the bench we will be pretty danger- playing.” ous.” Although the ultimate goal is winning the conferThe Sioux will rely heavily on their backline and midence tournament at the end of the season, it is not fielders again in 2011 and experience is plentiful in the only date the Sioux have circled on their calendar as they know getting off to a quicker start is key. “Getting off to a good start will set the tone for the season, especially playing South Dakota at home,” Gay said. “It would set us up for some good things in our non-conference schedule as well. We obviously have the NDSU weekend scheduled on our calendar as well. We came up short against them last year, but I thought we played well. All around though, I think we have a much better team than we did last year. It just comes down to finding the right combination of players.”

The Sioux celebrate after Caitlyn Haring scores a goal against Houston Baptist.

The Great West Conference took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world in Commissioner July 2008 when the conference expanded to include several additional sports and several new members. Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, TexasPan American and Utah Valley University. Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October 2008. The conference conducted championships in several sports during the 2008-09 academic year – men’s cross country (won by UTPA), women’s cross country (Utah Valley), men’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), women’s indoor track and field (South Dakota), men’s golf (Houston Baptist), women’s golf (UTPA), men’s indoor track and field (Utah Valley) and women’s outdoor track (Utah Valley).

Ed Grom

Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball began league play in 2009-10. As the conference began planning for team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field. Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions. The associate members, plus NJIT, will make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley will play in the West. Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing members. In 2011, soccer teams competing in the GWC consist of Delaware State, Howard, Houston Baptist, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), South Carolina State and Utah Valley. Football within the Great West Conference entered another era in 2008 with the addition of two schools and the departure of two of the founding members of the league. The University of North Dakota and the University of South Dakota entered the league for the 2008 season after North Dakota State and South Dakota State departed for the Missouri Valley Football League. Because of a scheduling quirk, not all Great West teams played four league games, but the 2009 schedule will be a true round-robin. Great West members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah remain at-large candidates for NCAA I-AA post-season playoff consideration, with South Dakota and North Dakota becoming candidates in 2012. The conference has recently submitted its application for formal recognition to the NCAA.

BRONSON FIELD

HOME OF FIGHTING SIOUX SOCCER

Pictured above, The Betty Englestad Sioux Center provides locker room facilities for the Fighting Sioux soccer team along with the coaching offices. “The Betty” opened in August 2004 and is also home to the UND volleyball and basketball teams.

Bronson Field is within walking distance of the UND campus, The Betty Englestad Sioux Center and Ralph Englestad Arena, along with multiple dining facilities.

The Fighting Sioux had 1,844 fans in attendance during the 2007 season, which is the program’s single-season record.

Above, UND’s Bronson Field’s new scoreboard for the 2008 season. Right, lockers are set up for the Sioux players before action.
