2012-13 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY MISSION

It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

Philosophy

We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

North Dakota

2012-13 und TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

Steve Westereng

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

Director of Sports Medicine

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action. In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

2012-13 und TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY

The University of North Dakota boasts a proud history of varsity athletics nicknames. UND’s first official athletics nickname was the “Flickertails,” although its origin remains somewhat a mystery. The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND’s football loss to Minnesota on Oct. 8, 1904, 15 years after UND’s first athletics contest was played. According to Lee Bohnet’s A Century of UND Sports, “The author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald. The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players.”

The University of North Dakota adopted the interlocking ND as its official logo during the summer of 2012 following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The interlocking ND will be utilized until 2015, when a new athletics nickname is selected.

In 1911, UND’s student body officially adopted “Flickertails” as its athletics nickname. UND would remain known as the “Flickertails” (as well, unofficially, as the “Nodaks”) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history. In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname “Sioux” for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND’s student newspaper. The word “Fighting” was later added, and UND would be known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the summer of 2012. The university utilized several”Fighting Sioux” logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in 1999. The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien.

UND’s most recent Fighting Sioux logo, designed by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien, was unveiled in 1999. The logo was named the No. 1 hockey logo in the world by The Hockey News in 2009.

The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo prior to the 2012-13 athletics season. UND’s varsity athletics teams will operate without an official nickname until 2015. The university’s varsity athletics teams will be referred to as “the University of North Dakota,” “North Dakota,” or “UND.”

The geometric Fighting Sioux logo was introduced in 1976 and remained in use through the 1999-2000 season.

The current University of North Dakota logo has been in use since the close of Centennial year activities in 1984. It serves as the official logo of the University, but typically is not used for athletics purposes. Following the University’s first athletic competition in 1889, UND’s earliest teams were known unofficially as the “Nodaks” (pictured above is the 1896 football team). The “Flickertails” nickname made its first appearance in a 1904 Grand Forks Herald article and was officially adopted in 1911.

Athletics director Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his fifth year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. In leading UND Athletics through the Division I transition, alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Champions Club and endowment giving have enjoyed a sixth straight record year; volleyball had a third record-breaking season at the turnstile, while women’s and men’s hockey both finished second in the nation in home average attendance. Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons resulting in two conference regular season championships, four conference post-season tournaments championships, three All-Americans, a national coach of the year, a record third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy, a national player of the year finalist and a second place finish in the all-sports standings of the Great West Conference. In the classroom, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the fall and spring semesters; women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf and men’s and women’s track and field all recognized nationally for their academic performance, two student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans and one student-athlete received a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship (the program’s 34th recipient). Faison helped secure membership in the Big Sky Conference for 14 of UND sports. Competition begins this school year. And, he played a leadership role in the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), joining Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State, Western Michigan and Nebraska Omaha. Conference play begins in 2013-14. Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president (2004-08) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the national director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (19791984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (19781979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (19741978). Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute. Kevin Galbraith will guide the University of North Dakota into its first year of Big Sky Conference membership in 2012-13 after a highly successful first season at the helm of the track and field program. Galbraith, who was named head coach at UND on July 19, 2011, led UND’s women’s team to runner-up finishes at both the 2011 Great West Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while the men’s squad placed third at both championship meets. Under Galbraith’s tutelage, UND student-athletes claimed nine individual GWC titles, highlighted by senior Emily Emerson’s GWC record time of 4:27.29 in the 1,500-meters, the final race of her decorated career. Mikaela Hirst (triple jump), Taylor Brett (pole vault), Roman Waldera (discus), Jesse Fenstermacher (800-meters), Shawn Johnson (shot put) and Matthew Harris (pole vault) also captured GWC outdoor titles, while Brett and Christine Weinreich (weight throw) won GWC indoor championships. Senior sprinter Chris Stoks won UND’s prestigious Glenn “Red” Jarrett Male Athlete of the Year Award (all sports), senior Tyler Rose received the GWC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award, senior Lindsay Anderson was named the GWC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and freshman Chantel Urban was named the GWC Female Freshman of the Year. During Galbraith’s first year at UND, his student-athletes were equally prolific in the classroom, as both the men’s and women’s squads were named 2011-12 Division I All-Academic teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). UND’s women’s team boasted a cumulative 3.45 grade point average to tie for 13th among the 171 Division I women’s teams honored. On the men’s side, UND owned a 3.19 cumulative GPA to tie for 31st among 85 honored teams. Individually, Anderson was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She was joined on the Academic All-District Team by her UND teammate, junior Kirsten Haas. During the fall of 2012, Galbraith and his staff unveiled a new addition to the program’s practice facilities: the Gill NCAA

Double Ring Tall hammer cage. The first-ever hammer cage at UND, it is the same model that was used at the 2008 Olympic trials hammer throw and is built to the specifications required to host an NCAA championship. The cage, which also enhances training safety for UND’s student-athletes, puts the program’s throwing facilities on par with nearly every school in the nation. An experienced collegiate track and field coach with a diverse coaching background, Galbraith came to UND after a highly successful seven-year tenure as head men’s and women’s track and field coach at the University of Northern Colorado, where he guided the Bears through their transition from Division II to Division I and into the Big Sky Conference. “Coach Galbraith brings a unique vantage point to our track and field program, having led a program through the transition from Division II to Division I and leading that same program into our future conference home the Big Sky,” said UND Athletics Director Brian Faison at the time of Galbraith’s hiring. “Kevin’s coaching resume is outstanding.” During his time at UNC, Galbraith’s student-athletes set 15 school records and added 68 marks to the program’s men’s and women’s top-10 lists. UNC also boasted several significant milestones, including its first NCAA Division I qualifiers in school history (all sports), the first NCAA national championship female qualifier in school history, and the first Big Sky individual champions (all sports) in school history. Galbraith also developed a comprehensive training and strength development plan for Amr Seoud, a Beijing Olympic qualifier. Seoud trained with the Bears in 2010 and went on to set two Egyptian national records and win the Gold medal in the 200 meters at the 2010 African Championships.

In 2012, Clay guided UND cross country through its first season of Big Sky Conference membership. UND’s women’s team placed seventh and the men’s team eighth, and both squads got their first taste of a Division I championship at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo. UND’s women’s and men’s teams placed 22nd and 24th, respectively, at regionals to finish ahead of programs such as Nebraska, Creighton and North Dakota State. On Sept. 10, 2012, UND made school history when the men’s team earned its first-ever appearance in the Division I regional rankings. That week, UND was ranked No. 14 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Midwest Region rankings. In Anderson’s absence, senior Emily Emerson led the way with a fifth-place finish and all-conference first team honors. She was joined on the All-GWC team by freshman Erin Wysocki, who placed sixth and claimed GWC Freshman of the Year honors. On the men’s side, senior Tyler Rose capped his distinguished career by earning All-GWC Second Team accolades with an eighth-place finish. Following the year, Rose was named the GWC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Sportsmanship Award. Shawn Johnson (twice) and Jakob Bissell each broke UND’s hammer throw record on the men’s side, while on the women’s side, Megan Storstad (twice) and Christine Weinreich each took their turns breaking the school hammer throw record. Weinreich also twice broke her own school record in the weight throw. Miller mentored Weinreich (indoor, weight), Johnson (outdoor, shot) and Roman Waldera (outdoor, discus) to individual conference titles, while Chantel Urban garnered GWC Freshman of the Year accolades. Miller also played a key role in the fundraising and construction of a new addition to the program’s practice facilities during the fall of 2012: the Gill NCAA Double Ring Tall hammer cage. Miller came to UND from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he enjoyed a highly successful three-year tenure as an assistant coach working with throws and combined events. He began his coaching career at UWRF after a standout athletic career at the University of Minnesota. Miller coached NCAA Division III qualifiers in each of his three seasons at UWRF, with his top student-athlete placing as high as third. His student-athletes placed 1-2 in the women’s javelin at the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and broke school records in the men’s weight and hammer throws. In his two seasons’ coordinating the Falcons’ strength and conditioning program, Miller’s student-athletes broke 27 school records and earned 13 All-America awards. He has also been heavily involved in track and field winter camps as both a director and instructor. Miller also coordinated the UWRF track program’s $10,000-peryear fundraising efforts. A 2008 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, Miller was a three-year letterwinner for the Golden Gophers and served as a team captain during his senior year. He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a five-time University of Minnesota Scholar Student-Athlete. Miller is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration.

The 2012-13 season marks the second for Joe Silvers as a member of UND’s track and field coaching staff. Silvers coaches the men’s and women’s multi and jumping events. Silvers helped guide UND’s track and field program to new heights in his first season, mentoring four Great West Conference individual champions: Taylor Brett (indoor and outdoor pole vault), Matthew Harris (outdoor pole vault) and Mikaela Hirst (outdoor triple jump). Those individual titles were among the 13 GWC All-Conference performances by Silvers’ student-athletes in 2011-12. Silvers came to UND after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Idaho State, where he worked primarily with ISU’s multi-event student-athletes. One of those student-athletes, Justin Critser, qualified for the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Before beginning his coaching career in 2009, Silvers was a pole vaulter and decathlete at Idaho State from 2004-09. A two-time letterwinner at ISU, Silvers was a member of the Bengals’ Big Sky Conference championship team in 2006 and was the 2009 Idaho Cup pole vault champion. Silvers graduated from ISU in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a minor in coaching. He received his master’s degree in athletic administration from ISU in 2010 and is considering pursuing a degree in sport psychology. Silvers received his USA Track & Field (USATF) Level 1 coaching certificate in 2010. In July 2012, Silvers attended the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academy and attained Jumping Event Specialist Certification.

2012-13 UND TRACK & CROSS COUNTRY By Jackie DeMolee, UND Athletics

Ron Pynn was an educator at the University of North Dakota for 29 years in political science, but he didn’t only shape the minds of students in the classroom. He has projected his love for track and field and cross country onto the programs at UND. Pynn has been a long time supporter of cross country and track and field. The Ron Pynn Invitational, UND’s annual cross country meet, was established in 2002 to honor Pynn for his many contributions to the teams, including travelling with the teams for support, working events and financially supporting the program. He said that he’s always had a passion for the sport and the studentathletes involved.

The Ron Pynn Invitational was established in 2002 to honor his contributions to UND.

Ron Pynn

“It [running] takes a special brand of discipline,” said Pynn. “What drives them [athletes] to run drives them to succeed in other areas of their life.” This is only one of the many reasons Pynn feels so passionate about the program at UND. “It’s been exciting each and every year,” said longtime UND men’s cross country and track and field head coach Mike Grandall, who retired following the 2009-10 season. “It’s great to have him back.” Pynn uses the Invitational as an opportunity to visit the University and friends. “I think the world of the coaches,” he said. “The way they treat the athletes, but not just as UND athletes, but as students too.”

Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the Ron Pynn Invitational. The course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest. The Division I transition has changed the Invitational somewhat, but it doesn’t change the meaning behind the name of the event or how important the event is to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and Pynn.

“What drives them to run drives them to succeed in other areas of life.” — Ron Pynn

Pynn currently resides in Burlington, Vt., but makes the trek back to UND each year for the Invitational.

For the first time in 2012, the annual UND Ron Pynn Invitational included an alumni meet and reunion social. More than 100 track and field alumni attended the events.
