Quick Facts:

Located in Grand Forks in the heart of the Red River Valley, the University of North Dakota is the largest and most diversified institution of higher learning in a threestate region. One of fewer than 70 public institutions with both a law school and a medical school, UND consistently ranks by most measures as one of the top 150 universities in the United States. Its nearly 15,000 students – including over 2,860 graduate students, 220 law students, and 290 medical students – come from every state in the union and more than 85 countries. Stretching out from the banks of the scenic English Coulee, the 548-acre University of North Dakota campus has been nationally recognized for its landscaping and beauty. The 240-plus buildings demonstrate both classic university architecture blended with more futuristic facilities in the Aerospace

complex. UND’s newest additions are the Gorecki Alumni Center, nationally recognized for its environmentally friendly sustainability features, Robin Hall, a privately-funded headquarters for the school’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems division; the College of Engineering and Mines’ Collaborative Energy Center, a private-public project dedicated to campus-wide academic and research partnerships with the oil and gas industry; the remodeled and expanded energy-efficient and environmentally conscious Education Building, the $20 million Wellness Center, University Place, an innovative apartmentstyle residence hall, the $124-million School of Medicine and Health Sciences building; a renovated and expanded School of Law; the High Performance Athletics Center; and a renovated Wilkerson Hall, which will provide more dining options and gathering space for students. With 243 fields of study and nearly 3,000 courses, including internationally recognized programs in aviation, aerospace, and unmanned aircraft systems, UND has a vast array of educational choices. Grand Forks, N.D., is a classic university town. Located in the heart of the Red River Valley on Interstate 29, the largely residential town offers a community environment with all the amenities of a large urban area and the safety and convenience of a small community, and is within driving distance of great amenities in the region. Grand Forks has outdoor activities for every season: • 900 acres of park land with trails, sports fields and courts, lakes, playground equipment. • The Greenway - 2,200 acres along the Red River • Twenty miles from Turtle River State Park. • Five golf courses including King’s Walk, the only PGA-rated golf course in North Dakota. • One-of-a-kind Japanese Garden at Sertoma Park. Greater Grand Forks is an impressively cosmopolitan city, boasting a regional population of roughly 75,000 residents and spanning two states. Because of its diversity, there’s always live theatre, musical performances, art shows or a concert from rock to the Grand Forks Symphony somewhere in Grand Forks: • Alerus Center • Empire Arts Center • Ralph Engelstad Arena complex • Fire Hall Theatre • The North Dakota Museum of Art • Chester Fritz Auditorium • Grand Cities Art Fest • First Night Celebration Wherever one lives in Grand Forks, great shops and restaurants are always within a short distance. Additional commercial growth has sprouted at the southwest end of the city, anchored by the Columbia Mall and Market Place. However, the heart of the Grand Cities is downtown, which spans the Red River. Downtown features a large variety of options and events, from a Farmer’s Market at the Town Square to fine dining.

RAY RICHARDS GOLF COURSE Ray Richards Golf Course (left) is home to the crosss country teams’ annual home event, the Ron Pynn Invitationaaal. TThe course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, proviidin ng a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest.

KING’S WALK GOLF COURSE CHOICE HEALTH & FITNESS CLUB The $25 million Choice Health and Fitness Club opened its doors in August 2012 and serves as the home for UND tennis. tennis A 159,000 square foot facility, Choice Health and Fitness features six tennis courts among its many state-of-the-art amenities, as well as customized locker rooms for UND’s men’s and women’s tennis teams.

The premiere home to college hockey, the Engelstad Arena has just about everything. As soon as fans enter the doors, they h are surrounded by history: eight NCAA and 16 conffe ference championship banners hang proudly from the raft ftters.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL UND’s Academic Awards Night in February honored 339 student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 GPA during the Fall 2015 semester, representing 71 percent of UND’s student-athlete population. Seventy-three of those student-athletes owned a perfect 4.0 GPA.

NOTABLE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2015-16 • UND’s student-athletes owned a collective 3.201 GPA in 2015-16, just shy of the school-record 3.23 GPA set in 2014-15. • Sixteen of UND’s 19 teams boasted a GPA of 3.0 or higher. • Seventy percent of UND’s student-athletes boasted a 3.0 GPA during the Spring 2016 semester.

Since making the transition to Division I competition in 2008-09, UND’s student-athletes have earned 25 Academic All-America honors, 10 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, and five prestigious NCAA academic awards. 2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL MISSION It is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and studentathlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHILOSOPHY We believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of Nate Baukol Director of Strength and Conditioning our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program. At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free. Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him. Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 studentathletes on 19 teams at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center. Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included. Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletics teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Department of Sports Medicine.

With three full-time athletic trainers -who are also faculty of the Department of Sports Medicine -- along with three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students, UND studentathletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

The Department of Sports Medicine has two primary missions: education and service. The bachelor of science degree in athletic training was the first athletic training education program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine in 1990. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC). In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, meet core course requirements, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75. UNDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the student-athlete. The student-athletes benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action and have continuous access to the athletic trainers within the five athletic training facilities used by the student-athletes. The athletic trainers work directly with the team physicians to provide quality healthcare for the more than 400 student-athletes. The Division Department of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The Center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Jake Thompson, PT/ ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their communityy involvement and have long g been looked upon p as p pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities. In 2015-16 alone, UND student-athletes logged a school-record 9,153 hours of community service.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL The University of North Dakota boasts a proud history of varsity athletics nicknames. UND’s first official nickname was the “Flickertails,” although its origin remains somewhat a mystery. The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND’s football loss to Minnesota on Oct. 8, 1904, 15 years after UND’s first athletics contest was played. According to Lee Bohnet’s A Century of UND Sports, “the author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald. The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players.” In 1911, UND’s student body officially adopted “Flickertails” as its nickname. UND would remain known as the “Flickertails” (as well, unofficially, as the “Nodaks”) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history.

UND adopted its current Fighting Hawks mark in June 2016. The primary logo features a stoic hawk head icon emphasized by a resolute hawk eye to personify the persistence, hard work and determination of UND student-athletes. The icon rests within an “ND” ligature to place UND Athletics at the heart of North Dakota.

In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname “Sioux” for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND’s student newspaper. The word “Fighting” was later added and UND would be known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the summer of 2012.

The University of North Dakota adopted the interlocking ND as its official logo during the summer of 2012 following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The interlocking ND servied as UND Athletics’ primary logo until June 2016.

The university utilized several ”Fighting Sioux” logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in 1999. The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau with input from American Indian students, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien. The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo prior to the 2012-13 athletics season. Following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname, UND’s varsity athletics teams operated without an official nickname for three seasons. On Nov. 18, 2015, UND began a new chapter in its athletics history when President Robert Kelley announced that ‘Fighting Hawks’ would be the University’s new athletics nickname effective immediately. With a new nickname selected, Kelley also announced that the University would begin the process of developing, selecting and implementing a visual identity to accompany the name. In June 2016, Interim President Edward T. Schafer introduced the new Fighting Hawks primary mark (top right) at a ceremony at the UND Athletics High Performance Center.

UND’s most recent Fighting Sioux logo, designed by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien, was unveiled in 1999. The logo was named the No. 1 hockey logo in the world by The Hockey News in 2009.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL CBS Sports Network (CBSSN) is the primary broadcast partner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), North Dakota’s men’s hockey conference. CBSSN will broadcast a select number of home and road North Dakota men’s hockey games. Check with your local cable or satellite TV provider for channel information for these listings and other television coverage.

Midco Sports Network (MidcoSN) will broadcast all home North Dakota football contests, as well as selected volleyball, women’s hockey, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games. MidcoSN will broadcast all home men’s hockey games that are not televised by CBS Sports Network or conflict with other NCHC broadcasts. Check with your local cable or satellite TV provider for channel information. Midco Sports Network will continue to broadcast two 30-minute programs focused on UND Athletics, as UND Sports Extra and North Dakota Hockey with Brad Berry premier on Tuesday nights throughout the season. MidcoSN will also air the popular web series Through These Doors, a behind-the-scenes look at UND’s men’s hockey program. All three programs will air on Friday nights on MidcoSN in addition to their premiers on various platforms.

FOX College Sports (FCS) will continue to broadcast nationwide all North Dakota sporting events (except men’s hockey) that are produced by MidcoSN through a partnership with UND Athletics and Midcontinent Communications. FOX Sports North (FSN)/FOX Sports North Plus (FSN+) is in its second year as a television partner with UND Athletics and will carry third-tier volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games produced by UND Athletics. PRESIDENT

Mark Kennedy Mark Kennedy began his duties July 1 as the 12th president of the University of North Dakota, succeeding Interim President Ed Schafer and President Robert Kelley, who retired on Jan. 14, 2016. Kennedy was appointed to the position by the State Board of Higher Education on March 15, 2016.

Kennedy came to UND from George Washington University, where since 2012 he was Director of the Graduate School of Political Management and Professor. His teaching and research addressed issues of how organizations can engage governments and societies around the world. A native of Benson, Minnesota, Kennedy earned a B.S. degree at St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, and an MBA with distinction at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He then served as an executive with several firms, including Pillsbury, and today’s Macy’s. From 2001 to 2007, Kennedy served in the U.S. House of Representatives, first for Minnesota’s Second District and then for its Sixth District. He served on the Financial Services, Transportation and Agriculture Committees, and established a reputation for bipartisanship. Kennedy was then appointed to the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations, serving under both Presidents George Bush and Barack Obama. From 2007 to 2010, Kennedy served as the Global Retail Business Development Lead for Accenture, a global management, consulting and technology firm. From 2010 to 2013, he lectured and led research projects at the University of Pennsylvania, Notre Dame, the London Business School and others, and served as an Executive in Residence at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. Kennedy is the founder of the Economic Club of Minnesota and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and Chatham House, an independent policy institute based in London. He founded the Mark Kennedy Frontiers of Freedom Lecture Series at St. John’s University.

Kennedy is the third generation of his family to live in North Dakota. His grandmother helped homestead outside Tioga in the early 1900s, and his parents lived in Golva and Hunter, during which time his older sister was born in Fargo.

Kennedy’s book, tentatively titled “Engaging to Win -- When to Collaborate, When to Compete, Succeeding at Both,” will be published by Columbia Business School Press in spring 2017. In it, he introduces the concept of “shapeholders” to the field of business strategy. A shapeholder is a political, regulatory, media or activist actor with no stake in an organization’s success, but great ability to shape its opportunities and risks.

First Lady Debbie Kennedy is a native of Hawley, Minnesota. They met at the Minnesota State Fair as high school 4-H ambassadors. Debbie Kennedy graduated from North Dakota State University with a double major in home economics and textile and clothing, and from George Washington University with a master’s degree in costume design. They have four adult children.

S Sue Jeno, Faculty Athletics Representative S Jeno, an associate professor in UND’s Department of Physical Therapy, serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative Sue ((FAR) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), a position she has held the position since November 2006. J Jeno has served as a member of UND’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC) since 2001, as well as numerous other u university committees, and was the chair of the University Senate during the 2005-06 academic year. She is also active in her professional organization, having served as treasurer of the North Dakota Physical Therapy Association. h J Jeno is a former NCAA Division I student-athlete and coach. After competing for the University of Michigan varsity syncchronized swimming team, she graduated and served as an assistant coach for the Wolverines for two seasons.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Brian Faison

Brian Faison is in his ninth year as athletics director at the University of North h Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008. During his tenure UND has successfully completed the five-year reclassification process to Division I. Alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Champions Club and endowment giving have enjoyed nine straight record years; $18.8 million in private funding was secured for the first phase of the UND Athletics High Performance Center, which opened in Fall 2015; and last year men’s ice hockey led the nation in attendance and women’s hockey ranked third. Media coverage has continued to grow with multi-year, multi-sport broadcast agreements with Midco Sports Network and Fox College Sports for television, iHeart Media and Midwest Radio Fargo-Moorhead for radio, and continuing expansion of all social media platforms. In the classroom, student-athletes continued to excel. This past year, nearly 75% of UND’s student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the Fall and Spring semesters; more than 200 earned academic all-conference honors; three received CoSIDA Academic All-District honors; three studentathletes were named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans; three received NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships; and, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, and men’s and women’s track and field all were recognized nationally for their academic performance. A record 9,513 hours of community service were provided to the community by our student-athletes in 2015-16. Competition for UND last year resulted in three teams advancing to postseason play: women’s basketball to the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI), men’s basketball advancing to the College Insider.com Tournament (CIT), and men’s ice hockey to its 14th straight NCAA tournament and 22nd Frozen Four appearance, winning its eighth national championship. UND had five studentathletes selected as All-Americans: one in football and four in men’s ice hockey. Faison has helped secure membership in the Big Sky Conference (BSC) for 14 UND teams and landed men’s and women’s swimming & diving in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). He also played a leadership role in the formation of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) partnering with Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State, Western Michigan and Nebraska Omaha. With over 34 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, Faison has served on several conference, regional and national sports committees. Most recently he chaired the NCHC Board of Directors for two years and chaired the BSC Joint Council. Faison currently serves on the BSC Administration Committee, and the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Committee. the latter of which he has also served as chair. Prior to joining UND Faison served as special assistant to the president (200408) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he was national director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-99). Faison also served as director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-95), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-88) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-84). He also had stints as assistant manager for athletics public relations (1978-79) and assistant director for alumni activities (1974-78) at the University of Missouri. Faison is a 1972 graduate of the University of Missouri. He and his wife Donna have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley, and a grandson Harrison.

Media may attend practice but it would be appreciated if you would call ahead to the media relations office to let us know you will be in attendance. RADIO/TELEVISION Space is available on the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center press row for on-air talent to broadcast games, along with limited space in the upper press box. Space is reserved for North Dakota’s home radio station, for the visiting team’s radio station and for TV, if necessary. Stations wishing to broadcast games are asked to contact the UND media relations office at least three weeks in advance of the game you intend to cover.

PRESS BOX OPERATIONS Game programs, game notes, and statistics will be available in the press box prior to all North Dakota home games. Affectionately dubbed “The Betty,” the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center opened its doors prior to the 2004-05 season, replacing the historic Hyslop Sports Center. The multi-million dollar facility is adjacent to the renowned Ralph Engelstad Arena and also serves as the home of UND basketball. Named in honor of longtime UND benefactor Betty Engelstad, the widow of Ralph Engelstad, the arena seats approximately 3,000 fans and provides the UND volleyball teams with a homecourt advantage that is second to none. The building was officially dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 24, 2004, attended by the Engelstad family and distinguished guests.

About Betty Engelstad Elizabeth “Betty” Stocker was born January 1, 1933 in East Grand Forks, Minn., the daughter of Fred and Mary Stocker. Betty married Ralph Engelstad in 1954 and together they had one daughter, Kris Engelstad McGarry. Keeping with her late husband’s generous financial contributions, Betty has emerged as a philanthropist in her own right, gifting to various charitable organizations. As the newest addition to the Ralph Engelstad Arena complex, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center is a lasting tribute to Betty Engelstad and the ongoing support and shared vision of the University of North Dakota and the Engelstad family. Betty continues to reside in Las Vegas, Nev., near her daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.

Mark Pryor begins year three at the helm at the University of North Dakota after back-to-back 20-win seasons. Despite numerous injuries at key positions last year, UND went 21-13 and advanced to the Big Sky Conference Tournament for the fourth straight year. McKenzie Hart led all of NCAA Division I in digs per set in 2015, the second time in his coaching career that he’s mentored a player that has led the nation in that category. He is the only coach in the NCAA to have a player lead the NCAA in digs per set for an entire season at both the NCAA Division II and Division I level. Hart would be named the Libero of the Year for a second straight season by the Big Sky Conference and was an AVCA All-Region performer as a senior. Pryor’s 2015 squad etched the program’s highest-ranked victory in its Division I history with a win over Dayton, which finished the season ranked No. 22 in the RPI. His program has led the Big Sky in digs per set the last two seasons (2014 and 2015) and has a perfect record of 9-0 in November regular season matches over the last two seasons. His teams have a knack for out-lasting opponents, notching a 10-2 record in fiveset matches in his UND tenure (.833 win percentage). The incoming class of 2015 freshmen earned praise nationally with high honorable mention status by prepvolleyball.com. His 2012 and 2013 recruiting classes at Baylor, where he spent the previous four years as the associate head coach, were both ranked in the top 20 nationally. Overall at UND, Pryor has a 47-22 record in his two seasons at UND. His 2014 squad tied the school record for wins (26) and claimed the Big Sky Conference North Division. That team also earned the school’s first win at the league’s postseason tournament. Accolades were plentiful for that 2014 team as four players were lauded by the league. Seniors Nikki Husfeldt and Lexi Robinson were each honored on the All-Big Sky First Team while Faith Dooley was dubbed the Freshman of the Year and a second teamer with junior McKenzie Hart grabbing the Libero of the Year. Pryor was introduced as the 12th head volleyball coach in program history on Jan. 28, 2014. The 15-year collegiate coaching veteran arrived in Grand Forks following a four-year stint as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Baylor.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL PRYOR’S ALL-TIME COACHING PROFILE

Pryor returned to coaching following a brief stint away from the profession in 2008 to lead the NCAA Division II program at Texas A&M-Commerce. As the head coach in Commerce, he led the Lions to back-to-back winning seasons, including a 25-10 mark in his last season. Pryor was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts during the 2009 season and tutored the conference’s offensive player of the year.

Pryor’s previous Division I head coaching stint was as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe in 2005 when he guided the Warhawks to a 15-15 record. The 2016 campaign marks the fifth on staff for alum Erin Green (Joki), who returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach prior to the 2012 season. Green is a former standout player for UND and returned to campus after spending a season on the bench with the Grand Forks Central volleyball program (junior varsity head coach/varsity assistant). “This is such a good opportunity for me to coach under two great coaches and experience volleyball from a new perspective,” Joki said at the time of her hiring. “I am extremely lucky to continue my volleyball career, and I can’t think of a better place I’d want to do it than at UND.” Green played in over 100 matches in her career at UND (2007-2010) and registered 707 kills in her four seasons for the Green and White. She racked-up 855.0 total points scored, a mark that sits 10th in UND’s record books for points scored in the rally era. The 5-foot-11 product of Grand Rapids, Minn. was named the 2010 Great West Conference Player of the Year after a superb senior campaign. She hit .283 with a career-best 310 kills, leading UND to back-to-back GWC regular season and tournament titles (2009, 2010).

Mia Tabberson (pronounced: MEE-uh) joined the UND coaching staff in July 2014. A 2013 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Tabberson has helped UND to a 47-22 record in her two seasons as an assistant coach. “When we talk about the desire and long range plan to take our program to the next level, what better way than to hire someone who has massive NCAA tournament experience,” Pryor said of Tabberson at the time of her hiring. “She will be a great mentor to our players and help show them what it takes to be successful at a high level.” That NCAA Tournament experience includes all four seasons, two as the starting setter for the Golden Gophers, including a Final Four appearance in 2009 to go along with an Elite Eight showing (2012) and a pair of Sweet Sixteen (2010, 11) performances. All told, the Muncie, Ind., native led the Gophers to a 101-38 record in her playing career. She was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and finished her career with over 2,500 career assists (2,565). Following her playing career, Tabberson worked with Northern Lights Volleyball Club, a nationally-recognized club in the Twin Cities. She was an assistant coach with the 18-under team, the top team for the elite group. She was the head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity volleyball coach at Roseville High School, where she also worked as a one-on-one special needs assistant.

Mitchell Wigness returned to UND in July 2012 as an assistant media relations director. Wigness serves as UND’s primary media relations contact for women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball and swimming and diving, and also handles radio play-by-play duties for women’s basketball. Wigness comes to UND after having served as the sports information director at the University of Detroit Mercy (2010-12) and assistant athletics director for sports information at the University of Indianapolis (2005-10). A native of Grand Forks, N.D., Wigness previously served as assistant media relations director at UND from 2002-05. “We are elated to be able to add a media relations professional of Mitch’s caliber to our staff,” said Jayson Hajdu, UND’s Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations at the time of his hiring. “He possess a wealth of experience, including a wide array of on-air responsibilities, and his grasp of both traditional and social media fundamentals makes him a perfect fit for our staff. His ties to the community and knowledge of UND Athletics will make for a seamless transition.” While at Detroit, Wigness directed media relations efforts in conjunction with the men’s basketball team’s 2012 Horizon League Championship

During his stint at Indianapolis, Wigness coordinated the efforts for the Greyhounds’ 19 varsity sports and hosted several NCAA Division II regional and national championships. He helped develop the UIndy Television Network, which airs all Greyhound football home games and select basketball doubleheaders. The broadcasts are available to 350,000 homes throughout the state of Indiana and football is aired live in the metro area. He also served on the media relations committee for the 2010 NCAA DI Men’s Basketball Final Four that was held in Indianapolis. While at UND from 2002 through 2005, Wigness was the primary media relations contact for football, basketball and volleyball, while also hosting “At the Desk With Mitch,” a live pre-game show prior to every home men’s hockey game. “When the opportunity arose to come back home, I had to jump at it,” Wigness said. “Having grown up in the area and being here during the Division II days, UND has always had a special place in my heart. I’m excited to re-immerse myself in UND Athletics as it builds on its impressive transition to Division I.” Wigness earned his bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from Eastern Michigan in 2000 and began his career as a sports information assistant at Saginaw Valley State during the 2001-02 season.

Andrew Klamm serves as the equipment manager for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and soccer for the University of North Dakota Athletics.

Now in his fifth season on the North Dakota strength and conditioning staff in 2016-17, Ben SaariBovre serves as the strength coach for UND’s volleyball and softball programs.

Klamm is the UND Athletics representative for game day facility management at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center and Bronson Field. He oversees all the day-to-day equipment needs for 18 sports, while hiring and managing a team of student workers to coordinate specific team laundry services.

SaariBovre has also assisted with multiple other teams during his tenure in Grand Forks, including the football, golf, basketball, track & field and swimming & diving programs.

Klamm is a 2012 graduate of the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in business and public administration with an emphasis in marketing. He spent the previous eight months as office assistant in the business operations office. Before coming to UND, he spent the previous three years as a server and manager at Rhombus Guys is Grand Forks, N.D. Graduating from Thompson (N.D.) High School, he lettered in baseball and basketball.

2016 NORTH DAKOTA VOLLEYBALL Third-year head coach Mark Pryor brought in nine new faces for the 2016 season, forming a young, but talented, roster set to make another run at a Big Sky Conference title. Just one senior (Chelsea Moser) dots the roster, but a solid group of six juniors will help UND continue to challenge for a conference title and make its push for its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. Five transfers will give UND a bit of a different look. While the North Dakota front line has always been formidable, it looks downright nasty with a total of eight players listed at six feet or taller. In Pryor’s first two seasons, the Fighting Hawks led the league in digs and were adept at continuing and prolonging rallies. That focus might shift to ending rallies quickly with experienced Left: Faith Dooley is already all over UND’s record book going into her junior season. Above: UND enjoys some of the best fan support in the country and has won 100 matches at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center (since 2004).

middles Moser and Faith Dooley (both all-Big Sky second teamers last season) back and a transfer from Baylor (Jordan Vail) ready to jump right into the starting lineup up front. That leaves UND with the luxury of having hitters like Julia Kaczorowska (248 kills before a season-ending injury last year) and Grace Bettenga as extra weapons in a loaded offensive arsenal. Add in transfers Teo Tepavac and Tamara Merseli, both of whom were all-America status at the junior college level, and North Dakota instantly becomes one of the most feared teams in the league. Junior setter Sydney Griffin returns to help distribute the wealth. Coming off a solid sophomore season that saw her average just under 11 assists per set, Griffin will not be forced to play every point this season as

she did a year ago with Sidney Mattson in the fold and ready to contribute after a redshirt season. The questions will be getting that first touch controlled in the back line and setting up UND’s big boppers. Gone are backrow mainstays Lauren Clarke (1,626 digs) and McKenzie Hart (UND’s all-time dig leader, NCAA leader in digs last season), but plenty of talent prepped to get their shot. Alivia Fraase redshirted last season and looks to provide some versatility after a standout prep career. Chai Pappa transfered from Bismarck State and Tamika Brekke has three years of eligibilty remaining after coming over from North Carolina Central University. Some freshmen will push for time as well with Ashley Brueggeman, Amelia Johnson, Maggie Smith and Steph Ziegler all doing their part to make decisions tough for Pryor as he sets his rotations. Consider the opening two weekends to be a good gauge of just how good this team

could be. UND will host Omaha, Ole Miss and UC Davis, three formidable teams, in the first weekend for the annual UND Classic. After a tough road match at rival South Dakota, UND then welcomes in UTEP and Texas Tech for a six-match stretch that will test the club early. It doesn’t get a ton easier as tournaments at Clemson and Minnesota (a Final Four team last season) set the table for the Big Sky Conference schedule.

The 16-match league slate opens Sep. 22 with a home match against Southern Utah. UND was picked to finish third in the Big Sky Conference’s preseason coaches poll, garnering a pair of first-place votes. The league favorite was defending regularseason and tourney champ Northern Arizona, who will be the Fighting Hawks’’ opponent during the final weekedn off league play (Nov. 10). The slate regularr season slate concludes Nov. 12 at Northern Colorado with the conference tournament to follow from Nov. 17-19. It will again be an eight-team field with the regular season champion getting the right to host.

2016 VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE

Three UND players earned Big Sky Conference accolades at the season’s end with Chelsea Moser, McKenzie Hart and Faith Dooley each being named to the second team. Hart repeated as the league’s libero of the year. BY THE NUMBERS 4 = Number of consecutive appearances in the Big Sky Conference Tournament for UND since entering league 6.25 = McKenzie Hart’s digs/set, TOPS in all of NCAA Division 1 787 = Total digs for Hart this season, already well past the UND season record for digs and a new Big Sky record 10.94= Sydney Griffin assists/set, 3rd in Big Sky 161.0 = Total blocks for Faith Dooley, 2nd most in UND history in a single season (Dooley, 170.0, last season) 331 = Dooley’s career block total, already in the top 10 at UND all-time 1,379 = Griffin total assists, 2nd in all of NCAA Division 1, 4thmost at UND for a single season 11-2 = UND’s record in five-set matches over the past two yrs. 29-18 = UND’s record in five-set matches since joining D-1

BIG Mc Senior McKenzie Hart had a record-shattering match at Southern Utah, continuing a fantastic final campaign in a UND uniform. Some highlights from that match and her season: *Set a new UND single-match record for digs (50) in UND’s 3-2 win at Southern Utah on Oct. 24. *She became just the second Big Sky Conference player ever to record 50 digs in a match, two shy of the record held by NAU’s Brittany Sowers (2008). *Her 50 digs were the most by an NCAA Division I player in a single match. *She also broke her own school record for digs (787) in a season and broke the Big Sky Conference record. *She obliterated the school record for digs/set. She finished at 6.25 digs.set, besting the old school record of 4.78.

SHE’S SMART Senior Lauren Clarke became the first-ever UND volleyball player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors three times as a 4.0 GPA student in chemical engineering. Clarke later would become UND’s fifth academic all-America honoree.

GIMME FIVE UND is 11-2 in five-set matches in the tenure of head coach Mark Pryor. In his last three schools along his head coaching stops, Pryor has a improbable 23-5 record in five-set matches. Here are the totals: Years 2014-15 2008-09 2005 2001-02

20/20 VISION Courtney Place (21 kills) and Chelsea Moser (20 kills) each set new career highs in the five-set win at Southern Utah Oct. 24. It was the first time this season that any player has reached 20 kills and the first time in UND’s Division I era that two players have reached that pleateau in the same match.

RECORD REWIND The University of North Dakota volleyball program holds a 662741-3 (.471) record all-time since the first match was played on Sept. 22, 1976.

PUTTING TEAMS TO BETTY BYE North Dakota is 100-41 (.709) all-time at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, which opened prior to the 2004 season. Since 2008, UND is a staggering 78-15 (.839) including a schoolrecord 13 wins in 2011. North Dakota is 33-7 (.825) at home the past three seasons.

North Dakota’s 3-2 win over Dayton in the season opener marked the highest RPI win in UND’s Division I history. The Flyers finished the season ranked 22nd in NCAA Division I.
