In the history rich city of Srirangapatnam, this studio was tasked with trying to bring it’s roots to the spotlight by means of a cultural center aimed at its residents and floating population such as tourists.

This studio was explorative in its means of circulation with the introduction of a site with contours located next to a water canal and the Kaveri river nearby.

Semester 05

Studio Guides: Prof. Anand Krishnamurty

Prof. Ryan Thomas

Asst. Prof. Asijith Khan

Asst. Prof. Kiran Kumar

Asst. Prof. Shashank S

Asst. Prof. Shreyas Baindur

Site : Srirangapatnam, Karnataka

Area : 7000 sqm

Duration : 16 weeks

There were learnings across the studio as each of the 6 guides had their own site and interpretation of the program.

The site chosen for this studio was bounded by the fort wall and found itself near an intersection of roads populated with tea stalls and thereby pedestrian traffic.

CULTURAL CENTER

FORM DEVELOPMENT

The orientation and shape of the form came together

Modules of 9 x 3 meter, each talking about some part of Srirangapatnam’s history were thought of.

The idea then divided itself into two parts of 4, one dedicated to the historic sites or monuments the other to the famous temples in and around the city.

The orientation of the blocks was then decided by the direction in which these monuments or temples were.

The four modules were then put together to create a smooth circulation of movement and to create a sense of direction.

The final block has entrances to tunnels under the ground that crosses to the other side of the fort wall and to the water canal there.

The studio brief given was to find concepts that define a ‘school’, to then understand and break our pre-existing notion of what a school is meant to have and to be.

The notion that a classroom need not be known by it’s four confing walls and how to define it by other means.

Semester 06

Studio Guides: Prof. S G Srinivas

Asst. Prof. Kavana Kumar

Prof. Ryan Thomas

Asst. Prof. Akash Rai

Asst. Prof. Kiran Kumar

Asst. Prof. Surendran Aalone

Site : Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Area : 8000 sqm

Duration : 16 weeks

Through the studio, various global and local case studies were explored and studied to provide ways of going beyond what we alreadly know of a school and it’s workings.

The studio also challenged students to work with the trying hot-humid climate of Chennai

A PLACE FOR LEARNING

13

FORM DEVELOPMENT

How the served and servent spaces have come together

The project started with a module of a classroom, and then the question of how to allow movement to and fro.

The idea of surrounding the module by the service space, i.e. the circulation, worked to an extent but it takes up an unecessary amount of area which would end up unused.

Hence parts of it were cut down to readuce area and allow as much natural ventilation and daylight into the classroom.

The four parts here represent spaces available to the public for community use and short duration degree courses offered after graduation and to the left, classrooms for the students.

A division in between allows for easier circulation between services when needed and also creates spill put spaces for the students to relax in between breaks

The final rendition of this method is depicted to the left, showing the overall shape of the service space in the project

The start of this project began by the classroom model shown beside. By beginning on a micro level, it was possible to address the users of the space in a more intimate manner which then allowed for spaces around to unravel easier

The grey platform was a method to divide classes of the same grade yet allow for movement between them during their breaks. This duality of space from formal to informal gives the users a more enriching experience.

The pivoted door is a means to partition, during class hours. Outside of class hours, the 2 meter space inbetween the doors becomes pockets for rest or interaction for the students. With the Lovered window bringing in cool wind

The studio brief given was to understand “Sustainablility”, what it entails and how to go about making a project sustainable.

In the studio we learnt that, just by adding renewable means of energy such as solar powered cells or by adding rainwater harvesting tanks isn’t nearly enough to make a building environmentally friendly.

Studio Guides:

Asst. Prof. Surendran Aalone

Prof. Anand Krishnamurthy

Prof. Prashant Pole

Prof. Shrutie Shah

Asst. Prof. Asijith Khan

Site : Kanchipuram, Chennai

Area : 10000 sqm

Duration : 16 weeks

It was through the lenses of material, climatic comfort zones, waste, energy, and conservation the project has tried to put less of a burden on it environtment.

And with a program aimed at allowing the layman to experience the making of the famous kanchipuram silks, it’s possible to show its value to those that don’t understand the amount of work being put into a single silk saree

The idea began with having the entire process of production to retail as a loop

Used to facilitate ventilation /daylighting

Shown through different stages of design

It was then broken into their respective blocks of admin, production, dorms and retail

After discussion the form was further refined

A final iteration of the overall form for the built.

The objective of this studio was to understand the concepts of urban design, in terms of scale and teamwork.

As such we were grouped into teams of four to six people that would work towards a vision that was decided among the group members for redesigning the town of madikeri.

There was a total of eight site to choose from , detailing a few while suggesting-

-programs for the other four sites remaining.

The programs were to be decided within the groups depending on the vision for the city and opportunites of the sites we could choose from.

We worked on ideas of road-to-siteinteraction, drainage systems, road guidelines and overall masterplan design on a group level.

Shown beside are modules designed with the vision of urban renewal in mind.

The below is a roof plan of the entire project which has been split into three buildings of Taluk office, Club and Daycare.

As per our vision of renewal, the functions of these spaces has been retained but their structures and programs have been redesigned to make this site more public in nature as it is close to the entry of the city and to the food street in site 1.

This plan is of the redesigned taluk office to make it more accomodating for the users. The day care is for the childern of the employees of the taluk office and club.

32 | UNDERGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

To work with the contours the plan has been split into three levels with an access on each

The existing club was renewed in design and program to allow for more members of the public to access it

The club now has added sport facilities and rented out studios to allow the public to aggregate around this area

The brief given for this exercise was to design a public use toilet. During the studio many topics were discussed such as the issue of safety and the need for inclusiveness. By locating the toilet in the Agrahara circle of mysore, it being a public space, the issue of safety was eliminated.

Semester 07

ARCHITECTURAL WRITING AND JOURNALISM

The exercise given was to make a Zine with the topic of FAILURE as an overarching theme

She moves with grace and elegance

Yet power enough to shake the ground With hips as broad as my shoulders She captivates the audience

As she bows to the earth

In acknowledgement and gratitude I find myself joining her For oh, there is much mirth

In dancing and dancing And dancing till I am lost Yet I am told to stop I am told it is unsightly "A disgrace of a man"

Emboldened with kajal and mehendi on his hands

"The starry night"

In an asylum, a respite from his mind

One he turned to himself, knowing he was not fine

"The scream"

On a walk with his friends at sunset, a scream Turned skies red, his friends a blurry yellow cream

"Worn out"/"Sorrowing old man"

A depiction of weariness, of his friend, of himself

A few months before he couldn't take anyvmore

And cut the thread to this realm

These men, these artists, How much did they suffer? Only after death was their name well known

Does that mean; only after I die, will I be alive?

This studio was used to re-design the college entry and exhibition hall. We were to make use of these spaces to facilitate easier movement through these areas as currently they lack footfall and to our understanding, what would be a better design aesthetic for the entry
