liza = 4 styles
1 Liza Text Pro 2 Liza Display Pro 3 liza caps pro ) 4 Liza Ornaments Pr1
A script which makes your words look different over and over and over. Compared to Liza Display Pro this typeface is more subdued and suitable for longer pieces of text.
A script like Liza Text Pro but having longer and swashy strokes in capitals, ascenders and descenders. For short headlines only, because of it’s heavy swashiness.
The capitals in the other 2 script fonts are designed to be followed by lowercase script lettering. In case you need to set a word in capitals, use Liza Caps Pro.

Liza combines the crafts of signpainting and computer programming. As said before: Liza does all the genius magic by herself. Automatically! Here is an example which shows Liza ain't a swindler. On top you’ll see how Liza would look if she would have been an ordinary, simple typeface without any intelligence, without any randomness, without any magic.
The second sample shows how different the same word looks when Liza has her advanced OpenType-features activated. All characters which appear multiple times now have a different shape each time; the bar of the ‘t’ and the loop of the ‘y’ take as much of the surrounding white space as possible, letters connect as you would paint them by hand (i+s). Note that these 2 features are activated by default.

Liza preserves the 27th character of the Dutch alphabet: IJ In Polish Liza will blossom with various lslash-glyphs and an exotic ‘double lslash’ ligature.
Every variation of each character has been carefully designed by hand. If you don’t like a specific glyph, there is always an alternate available. All these ampersands are included in the Liza Pro family.

Liza’s User Guide Officielle assssssssssd How Pro is Liza?
A user guide for a typeface ain’t superfluous as a typeface became a software package more than ever. Most issues speak for itself, as a user you don’t wanna worry about Unicode support, language support, OpenType formats and all that. It all speaks for itself. As you wish: ‘it just works’.
In general Liza has a powerful behaviour by default. Liza has an optimal behaviour without activating any of the advanced OpenType-features (nobody wants to worry about that). Liza is build in such a way that almost all the magic happens by activating these two features. Most current and future applications will have the ‘Ligatures’ and ‘Contextual Alternates’ OpenType features activated by default (only a couple of very specific aspects are not part of the ‘Ligatures’ or ‘Contextual Alternates’ feature, and have been put under other OpenType features, like ‘Discretionary Ligatures’. This is all explained further on in this document).
This is true for most important aspects of the typefaces. But here is a little explanation to point out the hidden corners of the font software. Explaining the design decisions behind the type family, might provide a better understanding. And might make you love Liza even better.
Technical details
Where does the magic come from?
Liza Pro comes in the OpenType font format (.otf extension). This has 3 advantages:
2 OpenType features: - Ligatures - Contextual alternates
1) cross platform, same file on Mac & PC 2) Unicode support, broad language support 3) erotic OpenType layout features
All magic goes automatically?
InDesign: all goes automatic QuarkXPress: all goes automatic Photoshop: all goes automatic Illustrator: Oeps, manually (re-)activate Contextual Alternates! MS Word: Sorry, no IQ-support TextEdit: Sorry, limited IQ-support Pages: Sorry, limited IQ-support Keynote: Sorry, limited IQ-support
An OpenType savvy application is required to use the sexy magic of Liza. Adobe CS, QuarkXpress, those kind of applications will use Liza to the max. Other applications like MS Word will treat this typeface as any other ordinary PostScript Type 1 or TrueType typeface. No magic, just a thorough script typeface.

Overview of features in Liza Pro
On next pages the bonnet of the typeface is opened, showing l’intérieur techniques de Liza Pro.
Liza Display Pro
All Liza Pro fonts are equipped with ‘basic’ OpenType features, like different numeral styles, fractions, superior and inferiors, numerator and denominators. But the real horse power comes from other features, specifically made to serve the design of each typeface. All three typefaces focus on different typographic possibilities. Therefore they all have their own typographic features.
Out-of-ink T-topper Superlooper LetterSwapper ProtoShaper Introducer Finalizer FlexCaps FlexSentenceCaps MultiFigures AccentLover
Liza Display Pro is meant for short headlines, just a couple of words which have to catch all attention. She’ll swash up your text drastically, giving long strokes to letters if their context allows. You’ll see long ascenders, long crossbars of a ‘t’, long loops of a ‘y’, etc. Érotique maximale!
Liza Text Pro
LetterMixer ProtoShaper Finalizer FlexCaps FlexSentenceCaps MultiFigures AccentLover
Liza Text Pro has a more moderate character than her Display sister. If you plan to set longer pieces of text in a script typeface, you’re not yearning for extreme visual effects. Instead, Liza Text Pro has more alternates for each glyph compared to Liza Display Pro, giving more subtle variations. Érotique non-stop!
Liza Caps Pro LetterMixer Introducer Finalizer Penetrator AutoPunk SmartCaps Algebrator MultiFigures
Liza Caps Pro offers additional possibilities to the script fonts. Of course every letter can appear in various shapes to obtain the manual lettering feeling, but she’s equipped with a higher IQ than you would expect. Érotique professionnellement! Please note: this list gives an overview of the important features. You won’t be able to select or activate them in your application. Technically speaking, these features are all part of the ‘Contextual Alternates’ or ‘Ligatures’ feature.

Liza contains a feature which simulates real-life characteristics of sign painting. At a certain moment you’re out of ink, and you have to dip the brush in the ink again. This causes an interruption of the continuous script lettering. The typeface Liza counts the amount of ink being used, and automatically interrupts the ongoing flow once you would be out of ink. OpenType technology takes care this all gets done automatically. You only have to type, while Liza takes care of your ink.

Tips for working with liza display pro assssssssssssssd Three reasons to use the Glyph palette
Of course Liza Display Pro is equipped with all the extragalactic OpenType features, but we won't explain them in every detail. The most powerful thing to remember: use the Glyph palette in your application (like Illustrator, QuarkXPress or InDesign).
•••
1 2 3
Click & hold button
Manually pick an alternate
to see all available alternates in InDesign’s Glyph palette:
If you don't like a specific character, change it yourself. Characters always have a couple alternates — sometimes up to 15 different shapes. Play around.
Add swashes to your letters
∑lingerie∑
A nice collection of swashes has been added to the typeface. Some can be used in the beginning of a word, others at the end. You can select them in the Glyph palette, and manually swash up your text even more.
Unique alternates
Some alternative letterforms will never automatically appear through any of the OpenType features, but are only accessible through the Glyph palette: alternative ampersands for example, or catch all attention with some remarkably oversized ascenders and descenders.

FlexCaps The shape of the capitals depends on their context. There are 2 atmospheres for capitals: timid and very swashy (in Liza Display Pro the atmosphere ranges from very swashy to extremely swashy).
)
FlexCaps go automatically. You don’t have to do a thing to make them work. However, for better control, a stylistic set has been implemented (FlexSentenceCaps, explained on the next page).
ProtoShaper 2- & 3-letter-combinations are replaced by pre-designed ligatures
AccentLover There are more alternates of the caps than only the FlexCaps variatons. Some glyphs only appear when being followed by accented characters. That’s not only very common in French, but also in many Eastern European languages. Liza loves the accents. the typeface liza is designed by underware

Tips for working with liza text pro asssssssssssssd Use Stylistic Sets (in the OpenType menu) The Liza-User-Extremiste can have a better control of capital behaviour with a Stylistic Set.
Liza Text Pro will choose a capital which fits to the complete word. This goes automatically and is called FlexCaps. However, in some situations you might wanna control the behaviour of the capitals. In that case, use Stylistic Set 01 (FlexSentenceCaps).
Find the hidden ‘Stylistic Set’-menu in the OpenType palette in InDesign:
FlexSentenceCaps
FlexSentenceCaps makes the first capital of a sentence very big, and takes a smaller variation for all other capitals.

Penetrator The Penetrator balances first and last letters of words. It takes care that repeating glyph shapes in longer pieces of text are being avoided. The ‘L’ in the magnifying glass is specifically designed to appear at the beginning of a word only. But in case this shape would appear every time at the beginning of every word starting with an ‘L’, the text wouldn’t look handmade anymore. The Penetrator takes care of this, it fine-tunes the Introducer & Finalizer and simultaneously works side by side with other features like the LetterMixer.

Uppercase <versus> lowercase Uppercase characters have a different style than lowercase. A text set in uppercase characters will look très chique, more stylish, has a more gentle upperclass behaviour. Lowercase characters are more the party crackers, having fun all around, and will look more casual. The uppercase characters are designed as very large initials, and to be used sparsely. the typeface liza is designed by underware

AutoPunk Automatic punctuation. The IQ of Liza Caps Pro makes sure that all other characters (like numbers, punctuations and quotations) automatically fit to surrounding upper- or lowercase characters. Depending on their position/context, these characters turn big or small. It probably won’t catch your attention. Just type lowercase and caps like you always do, and Liza Caps Pro will take care the rest fits in.

Tips for working with liza caps pro asssssssssssssd
Use OpenType features (in the OpenType menu)
A couple of OpenType features might give you the little extra you’re looking for. Some applications support Advanced OpenType Layout features. The OpenType menu is mostly rather hidden, but once you’ve found it you can boost the typographic power of Liza. This page demonstrates some of the features.
• All Small Caps
And in some applications this might easily be called ‘Caps to Small Caps’ or ‘Small Capitals from Capitals’, ‘OpenType All Small Caps’, but they all do the same. They’ll turn all your characters to small capitals. Default situation (Ligatures & Contextual Alternates activated)
I adore Hortense!
• Fractions
4 1/3 w 4 1/3
All Small Caps activated as well:
I adore Hortense!
• Tabular figure style
Changing to Tabular Lining style will make all your numerals monospaced. Also all monetary and mathematical characters will have the same width, as well as the ampersand. And for demanding users: monospaced fractions (explained a couple of pages further)
€123 5/8 w €123 5/8
• Discretionary ligatures Activating this feature turns some characters like ‘r’ and ‘k’ into a swashy alternate if it’s followed by a couple of other characters like ‘o’ or ‘c’. Just try it.Give your text a more flamboyant look.
brother w brother
Next to these features, all other logic, expected OpenType features have been implemented as well. Ordinals, Superiors and Inferiors, Slashed Zero, it’s all there.

Stylistic Sets
Some applications (like InDesign) support Stylistic Sets. They can be accessed through the OpenType menu (see page 16).
Once you add eg. 400 units of tracking in InDesign (eg. CS4), the Contextual Alternates feature gets switched off automatically. The text turns into all swashy capitals. Those kind of initials are nice when used in the beginning of a word, but not when the complete text is set out of them:
• Stylistic Set 01 (No ascenders lowercase):
C R I T I QU E
In some cases you might need a tight line setting, without any ascenders or descenders. Activate Stylistic Set 01 if you already have ‘All Small Caps’ activated, but still get trouble with the ascenders of ‘q’ and ‘j’.
In such a specific case, where you want to preserve that big amount of tracking, Stylistic Set 02 will help you out and will turn your text into less swashy, more moderate caps:
aquajogger aquajogger (c2sc, liga, calt)
C RI T I QU E
(with ss01)
• Stylistic Set 03 (Make sensitive characters BIG):
• Stylistic Set 02 (Non swashy capitals): Some applications start to act strangely if you have OpenType features activated, and at the same moment change the tracking. It’s not possible to define the relation of tracking and feature-behaviour inside an OpenType font. This can give undesired results in some cases. For example: a text all set in Liza Caps Pro, all capitals, will automatically look nice with delicate letterforms:
In case you wanna control the AutoPunk-feature (page 20) manually, you can select specific characters and activate Stylistic Set 03. This will enlarge all those characters of Liza Caps Pro which relate to the size of capitals or lowercase (like numbers, punctuation, quotation, etc). In case you wanna have the opposite (make sensitive characters small), just select them and deactivate the Contextual Alternates.

Tips for working with liza ornaments pr8 asssssssssssssssd Use the Glyph palette if you’re lost
Remember seeing that brilliant ornament, but can’t remember anymore where it’s located in the font? Don’t have this PDF with you and not connected to the internet? Don’t worry, you’re not lost. Applications which have a Glyph palette can help you finding that specfic ornament. Mais oui!

Lizalicious… take the max out of Liza Pro
Regular Expressions for combining fonts assssssssssssssssd Demanding users might get tired – while working with Liza Pro – of manually selecting TEXT ALL SET IN CAPITALS set in Liza Display Pro or Liza Text Pro, and then manually change that to Liza Caps Pro.
Here is an example how GREP can help you out in InDesign: in the Find/Change window you can insert the following GREP-rule. This will change all words set in capitals, from Liza Display/Text Pro into Liza Caps Pro.
Text set in capitals won’t look too nice in a script typeface:
01: Open the Find/Change window 02: Insert this simple GREP-rule (which selects all words set in capitals): [A-Z]{2,}
You can apply this GREP-rule
03: At the bottom you’ll see the option ‘Change Format’. Define these three changes: Font Family: Liza Caps Pro Font Style: Regular Case: OpenType All Small Caps
You actually want your text to look like this, using small capitals:
You can apply this grep-rule
Hit the ‘Change All’ button, and you can apply your change to all opened documents if you want. Done in a second, and might save lots of time.
If you’re a Liza-User-Extraordinaire, and you don’t feel like doing all the manual work, Regular Expressions might help you out. InDesign is one of the applications supporting Regular Expressions, also called ‘GREP’.
the typeface liza is designed by underware
This example is a simple GREP rule, which solves simple situations. Basically, what it does: it finds two or more capitals after each other. In some cases this ain’t enough, eg. “Adobe CS5”. You also want to have the “5” set in Liza Caps Pro. A GREP-rule like this might be better [A-Z]{2,}([[:punct:]]*\d*){1,} as this will also replace all digits and punctuation characters which follow directly after the words set in capitals.

Hidden synergetic power
Un plus un est trois (combining features) assssssssssssssssd Combining features in Liza Caps Pro
As you might have suspected, these stacked fractions have the same width as all other tabular lining numerals. This allows you to make more complex tables where all numbers are monospaced, as well as all monetary and mathematical characters, as well as fractions.
Normal fractions look like this:
Long time ago the developers of the OpenType technology had the idea of supporting ‘alternative fractions’. However, in practice no program supports this feature. But Liza Caps Pro does, and made it accessible despite the lack of support in applications. If you combine the Fraction feature with the Tabular Lining figure style, your diagonal fractions turn into stacked fractions.
C’est la 4 1/8 portion (Fractions feature activated)
Liza Caps Pro offers the possibility to turn your fractions into stacked fractions if you additionally select the Tabular Lining figure style.
We honestly admit that most people probably will not choose a script typeface for making complex tables. But if you want to, Liza can help you out. Mais oui!

Manually add variations
combine liza text & liza display assssssssssssd Variations within the Liza family are almost endless. Attention: if you got stuck in the endless possibilities of Liza Text or Display Pro, but you’re still not satisfied: manually combine Liza Text Pro and Liza Display Pro within the same word. For example if you have a specific glyph (-combination) you don’t like at a certain spot, you can manually choose an alternate shape in the Glyph palette (InDesign/Illustrator/QuarkXPress). Certain characters are only implemented in 1 of these fonts. Which means: if you still don’t find that specific glyph you want, select the glyph, and you switch fonts (from Text to Display, or the other way around) and find new shapes for a specific letter.
