PARLIAMENTARISM IN ACTION

Accountability and Democracy
IN CELEBRATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PARLIAMENTARISM
Parliamentarism is a system of government where the executive branch derives its legitimacy from and is accountable to the legislature (parliament). The parliament has the power to make laws, oversee the executive, and represent the electorate.
International Day of Parliamentarism, observed on June 30th, celebrates the pivotal role of parliaments in democracy. It emphasizes the importance of transparent, accountable, and representative legislative bodies in fostering good governance and upholding the rule of law.
The Maldives established its first parliament, the People's Majlis, in 1932. Over the years, the parliament has evolved from an advisory body to a legislative institution with the power to enact laws and oversee the executive. Significant reforms in the 2000s, including the adoption of a new constitution in 2008, strengthened the parliament's role in promoting democracy and ensuring governmental accountability. Today, the People's Majlis plays a crucial role in the Maldivian political system, representing the interests of the people and holding the government accountable.
In democratic societies, the parliament is a key institution that represents the will of the people. It is responsible for making laws, overseeing the executive branch, and ensuring that the government acts in the best interests of the citizens. The parliament holds the executive accountable through mechanisms such as questioning government officials, scrutinizing policies, and passing votes of confidence or no confidence. This ensures a balance of power and prevents any one branch from becoming too dominant.
STRONG PARLIAMENT
HEALTHY DEMOCRACY
A strong parliament enacts laws that reflect the will of the people and address their needs, ensuring that governance is effective and responsive.
By overseeing and scrutinizing the actions of the executive branch, a robust parliament prevents abuses of power, ensuring that government actions are transparent and accountable. Parliament represents diverse voices and interests within society, fostering inclusivity and ensuring that all segments of the population have a say in the legislative process.
A powerful parliament maintains a balance of power among the branches of government, preventing any one branch from becoming too dominant and safeguarding democratic principles.
Engaging with constituents and providing platforms for public participation, a strong parliament enhances civic involvement and trust in the political system.
