Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, in which the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility.
continued. To maintain continuity with the past, University of North Dakota faculty, the stage officials and the degree candidates will wear academic dress. Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895.
The ceremony you will witness today will be less formal than would have been the case even a few decades ago. Still, many traditions have been
Academic Dress The Gown
of North Dakota, the tassel colors associated with academic divisions are: white, College of Arts and Sciences; drab (subdued orange), Nistler College of Business and Public Administration; black and white, John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences; light blue, College of Education and Human Development; orange, School of Engineering and Mines; purple, School of Law; green, School of Medicine; apricot, College of Nursing; black, School of Graduate Studies. For undergraduate students, the tassels hang on the right side of the cap until they receive their degrees, at which time the tassel is moved to the left. For master’s and doctoral students, the tassel hangs on the left side of the cap and is not moved.
The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.
The Hood
The Cap
The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose.
Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University
Ceremonial Objects The Mace
important that it was usually worn around the neck for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office.
The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker. The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement.
The Charter The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions.
The University Flag The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter.
The Medallion A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was so
The Awarding of Degrees The awarding of degrees and academic distinctions listed in this program is contingent upon successful completion of the various program requirements. Commencement ceremonies at UND are planned through Ceremonies & University Events in the Division of Marketing & Communications. The University of North Dakota is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution. For more information on equal opportunity policies and procedures, see UND catalogs and other major printed pieces.

Commencement Speakers Kathy Gershman December 16
Hal Gershman December 17
Kathy Gershman is professor emerita of Educational Foundations and Research in UND’s College of Education & Human Development, having retired in 2015 after 38 years of service to the University.
Hal Gershman, longtime Grand Forks business owner, civic leader and philanthropist, is a 1966 UND graduate and 2006 Sioux Award recipient. The president of Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops and owner of the new Harry’s Steakhouse in Grand Forks, Gershman also is cofounder of the Hal and Kathy Gershman Family Foundation.
Over the course of her career, Gershman served as Department Chair, as well as Director of Graduate Studies for the College. Before joining UND’s faculty in 1984, Gershman received her B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts and her Ed.M. and Ed.D. degrees in Teaching, Curriculum and Learning Environments from Harvard University.
In addition, Gershman was President of the Grand Forks City Council for 14 years, until 2014. At UND, Gershman earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration before joining the Peace Corps and living in Bolivia, where he met his wife, Kathy. Gershman started two businesses in Mexico City and Cambridge, Mass., before returning to Grand Forks.
The author of two books in the areas of pedagogy and education philosophy, Gershman led a highly decorated academic career, receiving the Burlington Northern Foundation Individual Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, Creativity and Service in 1990. She was chosen as one of the “Faculty Stars” by UND Presidential Scholars in 2006, and received the N.D. Spirit Faculty Achievement Award in 2012.
Across decades of civic service and philanthropy, Gershman has been awarded the Governor’s Choice for Economic Development Ambassador of the Year Award, as well as the 2018 Leaders Community Service Award from Market Watch, a national spirits, wine and beer magazine in New York City, among many other distinctions.
During her tenure, her department received the UND Foundation McDermott Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1991 and 1995, and the Thomas J. Clifford Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching in 2012.
For his community service in the spirits industry, Gershman also received the George Washington Spirit Award from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. He is a past President of the Wine and Spirits Guild of America.
Her research interests included rural schools, curriculum development and qualitative research methods, among other topics. In 2005, Gershman presented “Everyone Gets to Sing Solo: Twenty-first Century Perspectives on the One Room Schoolhouse” for UND’s Faculty Lecture Series.
Gershman’s national recognition stems from not only his business skill but from his and his wife’s generosity and civic spirit. For example, the Hal and Kathy Gershman Family Foundation that they founded in 2007 is dedicated to advancing and promoting scientific, educational, medical and artistic charitable purposes.
As graduate director, Gershman chaired the dissertation committees of 38 graduated Ph.D. students. A number of those dissertations were recognized for either Outstanding Scholarship on Teacher Education or the UND Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation Award.
The Gershmans have regularly donated to the Empire Arts Center in Grand Forks and have supported hundreds of community events and nonprofits over the years.
In addition to her academic contributions at UND, Gershman is known for her advocacy for underserved students. In 2020, to help students facing financial hardship during the coronavirus pandemic, Gershman – by way of the Hal and Kathy Gershman Family Foundation – donated $10,000 to the UND Angel Fund.
Perhaps most notably, the Gershmans launched a campaign to save the Empire Arts Center from demolition in the 1990s. Even after the 1997 flood wiped out initial renovation efforts, the support of the Gershmans, the City of Grand Forks and the Grand Forks community turned the century-old theater into a space for the performing arts. To this day, the Gershman’s financial contributions support the facility.
In 2018, Gershman and her husband, Hal, announced a $3 million gift in support of renovating the old Oxford House to become the Gershman Graduate Center. A project close to her heart, given her tenure as graduate director, the Graduate Center will give UND’s graduate students a place to call their own, Gershman said. The Center was formally dedicated and opened in July 2021.
Today, the Empire Arts Center is also home to the UND Art Collections Gallery, which is the culmination of another effort led by the Gershmans. The venue features multiple exhibits each year comprised of pieces sourced directly from UND’s collections.
“That’s where my heart was, that was where my professional life was,” Gershman told the Grand Forks Herald. “When graduate students get together, they argue, exchange ideas and learn how to think on their feet and defend themselves.”
Speaking to the Grand Forks Herald, Gershman said the couple’s investments in various programs and scholarships stem from a desire to directly benefit others. “My wife always says a society is judged by how it cares for those less fortunate, so giving back is important to us,” he said.
The Gershmans have also long been advocates for the arts in Grand Forks and the surrounding region. Together, they have contributed to and led many fundraising efforts to enhance artistic offerings and venues in the Red River Valley, including their successful campaign to renovate and revitalize the Empire Arts Center in the late 1990s.
In 2018, the Gershmans gave $3 million to UND for the renovation of the old Oxford House on campus, also known as the President’s House, to create the Gershman Graduate Center. Their contribution qualified for a state matching grant, making a total of $4.5 million available for a complete remodel. Dedicated and opened in July 2021, the building is a space for graduate students and programs that encourages collaboration and connection for both online and on-campus students.

Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors Michelle M. Sauer
Daphne E. Pedersen
Since joining the Department of English faculty in 2008, Michelle M. Sauer’s teaching and extensive research have focused on medieval literature, theology and history as well as linguistics and gender and women’s studies.
In her 17-year career at UND, Daphne Pedersen has become a nationally and internationally recognized sociologist. She has published more than 60 journal articles investigating topics such as gender, the sociology of health, and how work and stress shape individual well-being.
As one colleague nominating Sauer for the distinction wrote: “Michelle’s scholarly influence is on a national and international scale; she puts UND on the map for her extensive work in medieval studies that crosses disciplinary boundaries of English history, languages, religion, queer studies and gender studies.”
Pedersen currently serves as Department Chair of Sociology, and is the immediate Past-President of Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society. Her career as a professor has been consistently recognized through awards from the University, including the Bertin C. Gamble Award for Individual Excellence in Teaching in 2007 and the UND Foundation/Bertin C. Gamble Faculty Award for Individual Excellence in Teaching, Research or Creative Activity, and Service in 2018.
An active and respected scholar in these fields, Sauer’s role as a professor is also highly lauded as being dedicated to undergraduate and graduate levels of learning and research. Students at the College of Arts & Sciences have referred to her as a fierce advocate for first-generation, minority and LGBTQ students.
In 2018, Pedersen also presented her research regarding “Stress and Burnout in Higher Education” for an installment of UND’s prestigious Faculty Lecture Series.
Her co-edited work, The Lesbian Premodern, was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award – a prestigious award recognizing LGBTQ literature. A number of her monographs, edited collections, peer-reviewed journals and blog articles have also been nominated for awards.
Colleagues nominating Pedersen for the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship award also recognized her repeated service as an Alice T. Clark Scholars Faculty Mentor. Since 2010, Pedersen has mentored numerous faculty members new to UND.
Her advocacy has extended to her service work with regional, national and international organizations to promote medieval studies and “bring muchneeded equity and diversity to it,” according to a nominator. This work includes guiding the creation and development of Medievalists of Color, an international organization aimed to advance critical race and cultural studies within medieval studies, and to support the work and experience of people of color both inside and outside of academia.
“I believe it is very telling that incoming faculty repeatedly choose Dr. Pedersen’s career as one they would like to emulate,” wrote one nominator. Pedersen’s research profile has been characterized as “including collaborative efforts with a variety of individuals, both students and other faculty both within and outside of her department.” “She has been consistently rated by her colleagues as ‘exceeding expectations’ when it comes to her research efforts,” a colleague wrote.
“Prof. Sauer’s research record is second to none,” a colleague wrote. “The accomplishments detailed in her CV are awe-inspiring. Her distinguished publishing record, which includes numerous peer-reviewed monographs, edited volumes, book chapters and journal articles, is made all the more impressive by the number of those publications that have received special recognition and awards from her disciplinary peers.
Since 2018, Pedersen has served as a co-principal investigator on a $1 million National Science Foundation grant for Undergraduate Scholarships with Mathematics and Science Training, Exploration and Research. Pedersen has led the social sciences research efforts associated with that grant, which “aims to identify the effectiveness of high-impact practices and mentorship in curbing attrition among underserved students in the STEM fields.”
“More proof of the significant impact she has made and continues to make in her field is the extensive list of plenary, featured, keynote and invited conference presentations she has delivered regionally, nationally and internationally.”
Also, since 2018, Pedersen has been Co-Editor in Chief of The Social Science Journal, for which she previously served six years as Associate Editor. She has also held numerous positions on editorial boards for publications including Teaching Sociology, the top Scholarship of Teaching and Learning journal in her discipline, and Marriage & Family Review – the latter of which has had Pedersen on its board since 2007.
Sauer has been nominated for multiple teaching awards at UND, including being recognized as a “Faculty Star” in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, she was a finalist for the UND Undergraduate Teaching Award, and was a semifinalist for the UND Graduate/Professional Teaching Award in 2020. For her research, Sauer received the Thomas J. Clifford Faculty Achievement Award for Individual Excellence in Research in 2016.
Her research on college student populations contributes to the University’s understanding of student success, stress and well-being in higher education, wrote another nominator. Pedersen put that background into practice by serving as a member of UND’s Task Force on The Future of Higher Education from 2020 to 2021. “Dr. Pedersen has worked closely with a large number of students – both undergraduate and graduate – while at UND, providing them with opportunities to participate in research, professional presentations and peer-reviewed publications,” the nominator continued.

Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors Vasyl Tkach
and Use Committee for 10 years, and has served as Associate Editor for the Journal of Parasitology and Acta Parasitologica. As a grant reviewer, Tkach has worked with the National Science Foundation, as well as agencies in the Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland and Vietnam.
Vasyl Tkach is one of the world’s foremost parasitologists. Since joining UND’s faculty in 2003, in the Department of Biology, Tkach has published more than 200 papers and conducted research efforts spanning the globe.
Beyond his own achievements, Tkach has facilitated successful research for dozens of UND students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has individually mentored more than 60 undergraduate students and trained a number of post-doctoral researchers from multiple countries. Tkach has also been active in hosting Research Experiences for Undergraduates on behalf of the National Science Foundation, as well as bringing experiential learning opportunities to high school students.
“He has done more international research than probably any faculty in the history of UND, including doing research on all continents and co-authoring papers with colleagues from 30 countries,” wrote one of Tkach’s colleagues in nominating Tkach for the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship award.
“He talked about parasites with such enthusiasm,” wrote a former student. “There are not too many people in this world who can find the beauty in parasites, but it soon became one of my favorite classes. His excitement for learning and all things nature was contagious.” Another student wrote that UND is fortunate to have Tkach on faculty.
In 2020, Tkach served as president of the American Society of Parasitologists, the leading organization for the discipline in the United States.
“I have met many clever people in my life as a student and practitioner, but Vasyl stands out as someone with a savant level intellect who also maintains the common touch and a general interest in fostering students,” this former student wrote.
Through his 30-plus-year career, he has described more than 100 new species of parasites, in addition to his hundreds of highly cited publications.
Nearly all involved in Tkach’s nomination for the distinction noted his exceptional record in all aspects of faculty responsibility.
A native of Ukraine, Tkach has received multiple UND, regional, national and international awards for his research, including the 2017 Henry Baldwin Ward Medal, the most prestigious research award by the American Society of Parasitologists.
“UND continually promotes experiential learning, and Dr. Tkach is a paragon for providing this,” wrote another colleague. “In his courses, students do state-of-the-art approaches being used in modern research, including DNA isolation, sequencing and database searches and alignments on parasites he recently collected.
In 2019, Tkach was awarded an Honorary Membership from the Polish Parasitological Society, the organization’s highest recognition. In terms of service contributions, Tkach has chaired multiple committees within the Department of Biology, including Chair of the Executive Committee. Outside of UND, he served on the Institutional Animal Care
“Sometimes, these class assignments resulted in the identification of new species.”

UND History With help from more than 150,000 proud alumni, UND’s traditions have endured for more than a century. Our history is colorful and diverse. From educators to political leaders and astronauts, our alumni credit UND for their successes. Here are some facts: • UND was founded in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly — six years before North Dakota became a state. • The cornerstone for Old Main — UND’s first building and where the Eternal Flame in the Old Main Memorial Plaza now stands — was laid in the fall of 1883. • As part of its evolution into a full-fledged, multi-purpose University, UND added research and the instruction of graduate students (the first master’s degree was awarded in 1895) before the end of the 19th century. • Four faculty members met the 11 students who entered the University on opening day, September 8, 1884.
Science Lab
• Three U.S. Presidents have visited campus: Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. • The first class of eight students graduated on June 13, 1889. • Unlike most state institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi, UND did not begin as an agricultural school or as a teachers college. It was organized initially as a College of Arts & Sciences, with a Normal School for the education of teachers.

The Mace of the University The ceremonial mace was first a practical weapon intended to protect the king and borne by the Sergeants-at-Arms, a royal bodyguard. The history of the civic mace begins about the middle of the 13th century. Since about the 15th century, universities have displayed a mace as a symbol of both internal authority and the independence of the scholarly tradition. The mace of the University of North Dakota came into being at the direction of George W. Starcher, president from 1954 to 1971. In 1963 he approached Alvin Rudisill, chairman of the Industrial Arts Department, with the idea of creating a mace with materials from “Old Main,” UND’s first building. Condemned for decades for its severe structural deficiencies, Old Main was being demolished as administrative offices had moved to the newly completed Twamley Hall. Rudisill turned to one of his students, Dennis Kulas, who was also pursuing a minor in art. Kulas crafted a mace in wood and then a second, when some thought the first might be too heavy for ceremonial use. The first one is the mace that has been carried at the front of all commencement ceremonies since. Kulas explained the artistic ideas he incorporated into his design: “The theme used for making the mace was like a drop of water falling into a body of water, its effects sending out ripples throughout the water. Likewise, a little learning affects everyone by sending out knowledge to all four corners of the Earth, hence the design. The globe: symbolizing the Earth. The rings: symbolizing a drop of knowledge ever spreading throughout the Earth. The four spikes: emphasizing the four corners of the Earth.” The second mace used the same theme, but the globe was hollowed out to make it lighter by using recessed rings.
“Old Main,” 1958

The First Commencement The following is excerpted from University of the Northern Plains, the history of the University of North Dakota written by Louis G. Geiger and published in 1958 as part of the University’s 75th anniversary celebration. A major milestone in student affairs, as well as in the University’s history, was the graduation of the first college class in 1889. A faculty committee was appointed in February to plan the exercises. In April the student body met and chose the school colors, the pink and green of the prairie rose, “suggestive of our green prairies and rosy prospects.” On June 13, a cool, fair day, the ceremony began at ten o’clock in the University assembly hall, which had been decorated with flags and flowers and a large “89” centerpiece. A capacity crowd of students and spectators (perhaps as many as 250) was on hand as the graduates — “the ladies … dressed in white” and “the gentlemen … neatly attired” — marched to their places on the stage to the accompaniment of music by [W. W.] Hall’s Cadet Band. Special guests were the Regents, H. M. Mellette, governor of the Territory, several other territorial officials [North Dakota did not attain statehood until November 2, 1889], and Nehemiah Ordway, who as governor had signed the organic act of the University. [President Homer B.] Sprague presided and introduced the speakers. Mellette observed that it was a “Red River letter day.” Ordway spoke with pride and feeling on the University’s founding. One of the Regents relieved the occasion with a touch of unconscious humor when he explained: “As to the faculty we have done the best we could with the money at hand.” Following the official commemoration of the occasion, the main part of the program began; there were essays and orations presented by each of the eight graduates, six from the college and two from the four-year normal course; Frances M. Allen (B.A.), Clinton S. DeGroat (B.S.), Ben E. Ingwaldson (B.S.), Cora Smith (B.S.), Marie Teel (B.S.), May Travis (B.A.), and Genevieve Arnold
The Main Building and Ladies’ Hall (later Davis Hall)
The University of North Dakota graduated its first class on June 13, 1889. Seated: Frances M. Allen, B.A.; May Travis, B.A.; Genevieve Arnold, Normal Certificate; and Marie Teel, B.S. Standing: Irene Mares, Normal Certificate; Clinton S. DeGroat, B.S.; Cora Smith, B.S., and Ben E. Ingwaldson, B.S.
and Irene Mares (normal certificates). The orations, on current as well as literary and moral subjects, were printed in full in the Grand Forks newspapers. Three of the college graduates were from Grand Forks; none had come from farther than Hillsboro. Not one had been born in North Dakota; Ben Ingwaldson had been born in Norway. In the class of 1890, of seven college graduates, four were from Grand Forks, three were women, and six took the science degree. A considerable proportion of the early graduates entered medicine, law, or teaching. Cora Smith, a member of the first class, took a degree in medicine at Boston University; Mary Crans of the second class completed the course in dentistry at the University of Michigan. Ben Ingwaldson went on to the University of Minnesota law school. North Dakota’s first appointee to West Point, Joseph Travis, graduated in the class of 1890.
Congratulations and Best Wishes The University of North Dakota is proud to recognize the accomplishments of its graduates and to extend best wishes to them, their families and loved ones.
