Commencement Speakers After winning election to the U.S. Senate, Heitkamp quickly established a reputation for developing bipartisan support, especially for issues important to North Dakotans. As a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, she helped write, negotiate and pass a long-term, comprehensive farm bill that Congress passed in 2014. Her work on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs led to reform legislation that provided relief for smaller financial institutions, including rural credit unions and community banks. On the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee she introduced and pushed bills to enhance first-responder training and equipment, strengthen northern border security, and improve mail services to rural areas.

Heidi Heitkamp Heidi Heitkamp was the first North Dakota woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate, serving from 2013 to 2019. She will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree today. Mary Kathryn (Heidi) Heitkamp grew up in a large family in Mantador, N.D. She graduated from UND in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, double-majoring in history and political science. She then earned a J.D. degree from Lewis and Clark College in 1980. That same year she began her long career in public service by taking a position with the Environmental Protection Agency.

As a member of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, she worked to ensure the federal government lived up to treaty and trust responsibilities, and better protect Native American children. On the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Heitkamp advocated for early-stage funding to assist start-ups in North Dakota.

From 1981 to 1986, Heitkamp was a director of the Dakota Gasification synfuels plant, the only commercial-scale plant in the U.S. manufacturing natural gas from coal.

Throughout her career, Heitkamp has remained close to UND. She has regularly interacted in and out of the classroom with students in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, and in 2013 delivered the department’s annual Frank Wenstrom Lecture. In 2017 she worked with the University to host a conference on issues, policies and opportunities in the Arctic Circle. An avid fan of the Fighting Hawks, Heitkamp attends as many football and hockey games as she can.

Heitkamp was appointed State Tax Commissioner in 1986 and won election to that post in 1988. In 1992, she was elected Attorney General for North Dakota. Heitkamp ushered in numerous initiatives for prosecuting drug dealers, combating fraud against senior citizens, and strengthening rules regarding sexual predators. She also brokered an agreement between 46 states and U.S. tobacco companies to change their marketing and sales practices.

Before being elected to Congress, Wilson was a cabinet secretary in New Mexico’s state government responsible for foster care, adoption, juvenile delinquency, children’s mental health, and early childhood education.

Heather Wilson Heather Wilson is the 24th Secretary of the Air Force and is responsible for the affairs of the Department of the Air Force, including the organizing, training, equipping, and providing for the welfare of 685,000 active-duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian personnel, as well as their families. She oversees the Air Force’s annual budget of more than $138 billion and directs strategy and policy development, risk management, weapons acquisition, technology investments and human resource management.

From 1989 to 1991, Wilson served on the National Security Council staff as director for defense policy and arms control for President George H.W. Bush. From 1991 to 1995 and again from 2009 to 2013, Wilson was in the private sector. In 1991 she founded Keystone International Inc., a company that did business development and program planning work for defense and scientific industry. She was a senior advisor to several national laboratories on matters related to nuclear weapons, non-proliferation, arms control verification, intelligence and the defense industrial base.

Wilson has more than 35 years of professional experience in a range of leadership and management roles in the military, higher education, government and private industry. Before assuming her current position, Wilson was president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

Wilson enrolled in the U.S. Air Force Academy’s third class to include women and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1982. She served as an Air Force officer from 1982 to 1989 and also attended Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar, earning master’s and doctoral degrees in international relations.

From 1998 to 2009, Wilson was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. She served on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Wilson will leave her post as Air Force Secretary on May 31 to assume the presidency of the University of Texas at El Paso.

The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late UND benefactor Chester Fritz, 18921983. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” Nominations are solicited from members of the V.P.A.A. Academic Cabinet and the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors; these are evaluated by a committee chaired by the graduate dean and composed of three Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors and faculty representatives from each academic college not represented by a Fritz Professor. The recommendations are reviewed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and forwarded to the President for final decision. Chester Fritz attended UND from 1908 to 1910. He became an international trader in precious metals and lived most of his life in China and Europe. In establishing the endowment for the professorships — just one of his many gifts to UND — as an “investment in the future of my Alma Mater and of the people who make the future what it shall be.” He added, “I am especially indebted to the fine teachers who, in the end, have determined in large measure, how well I was able to learn and to use the knowledge that the University of North Dakota could provide.” Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors currently serving on the faculty include: Holly Brown-Borg, Basic Sciences Sharon Carson, English Colin Combs, Biomedical Sciences F. Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor Thomasine Heitkamp

Numerous nominators praised Heitkamp’s talents as an educator. “She is a high-energy teacher who transfers her professional commitments to her students,” one wrote. “She has high expectations for students and expects strong professional performance from them, both in the classroom and later as alumni of the University.” An alumna wrote, “Thomasine helped me grow into my abilities as a macro practice social worker by pushing me out of my comfort zone to help me become more confident in my own voice.” Heitkamp has been honored with Master Teacher selection by the Council on Social Work Education.

A member of the Social Work faculty since 1983, Thomasine Heitkamp served as department chair from 2004 to 2013. She then served as an associate provost from 2013 to 2016. Heitkamp has established a national reputation as a leader in key contemporary rural health issues, particularly in the prevention, treatment and recovery of clients with substance use disorders. She has achieved notable success in securing external funding and building interprofessional research teams for these issues. One nominator wrote, “As an intellectual leader, Professor Heitkamp has a special gift for working across the social lines in terms of positional ranks, professional disciplines, economic classes, and racial/ethnic groups.” Another observed, “Her recognition as a leader in addressing the pandemic of opioid disorders and social welfare is international in scope.”

Nominators also pointed to Heitkamp’s extensive efforts on behalf of fellow faculty. Noting her mentoring of junior faculty, one observed, “She does this naturally and without reservation. I have watched Thomasine look out for other faculty members, offer them incredibly useful advice, and help them realize their goals.” Her dean noted, “In recent years, she has also willingly taught courses at the last minute due to shortages of experienced graduate faculty in the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines.” “Professor Thomasine Heitkamp,” a nominator explained, “is an effective change agent with clear vision, social capital, and a true understanding of social systems that promote advancing community welfare in rural and tribal communities.”

Currently, Heitkamp serves as program director for the Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center, the Mountain Plains Addiction Technology Transfer Center, and the State Targeted Response for Technical Assistance through the

positive and respectful of others’ viewpoints, but can effectively persuade others when necessity.” “He has been a ‘go to’ resource whenever the need for faculty assistance or involvement has arisen,” a colleague wrote. “Whether it is in service as an advisor to a student organization or service on a committee, Professor Lovelace had always been willing to offer his time and talents to support students, staff, faculty, and institutional initiatives.”

Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor Kent Lovelace

Since joining UND’s Department of Aviation in 1980, Kent Lovelace has taught thousands of students in the classroom and on the flight line. He served as assistant department chair from 1989 to 1994, and then as department chair from 1994 to 2014. He currently serves as professor and director of aviation industry relations where he has facilitated several employment pathway opportunities with major airlines and hundred of thousands of scholarship monies . During his time as chair, he guided the Department of Aviation from a primarily teaching-focused unit to a more balanced research and teaching department. In his last 10 years as chair, the department averaged $2.5 million annually in research expenditures.

Lovelace has an extensive record of service to the University, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) and the National Business Aviation Association. He is a former coach of the UND Flying Team, which has won more national championships than any other flight school. Lovelace has received the William A. Wheatley Award from the University Aviation Association, the highest national honor in collegiate aviation education. He has also been honored with the Founders Award from NIFA and the Chairman’s Award from the Aviation Accreditation Board International for pilot supply research efforts.

His skills as an educator have been widely praised. “Aviation graduates consistently point to Kent as one of the best professors they ever had at UND,” a nominator wrote. “Kent has always taken the extra time to ensure his students are provided the best learning environment possible. His dedication to the collegiate aviation teaching profession is second to none.”

A nominator summed it up this way: “If you were to ask anyone in the aviation industry, ‘Who is one of the greatest faculty members anywhere?’, the common answer would be Kent Lovelace. He has set his print on the entire world of aviation, touched the lives of thousands and thousands of students, led hundreds of staff and faculty through his tenure, and solidified his place as one of the great, few, aviation legends to grace the halls of UND.”

Nominators noted his strong leadership, describing him as “a congenial colleague who works well with the faculty. He is

Honorary Degrees Awarded Heidi Heitkamp In addition to receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, Heidi Heitkamp will present an address during today’s Graduate Degrees commencement ceremony. She is profiled on Page 15 of this publication along with Undergraduate Degrees Ceremony speaker, Heather Wilson, Secretary of the U.S. Air Force.

Clay Lacy Clay Lacy is known throughout the world of aviation industry and education as a pilot, entrepreneur, innovator, record setter and benefactor. Growing up in the farmland of Wichita, Kansas, during the Great Depression, Lacy developed an early fascination with flight and piloted his first aircraft at the age of 12. By the age of 19 he had accumulated nearly 2,000 hours of flight time as both an instructor and ferry pilot. In January 1952 he joined United Airlines in Los Angeles. He would pilot planes from the Convair 340 and Douglas DC-3 through the Boeing 747-400 before retiring from United as No. 1 in seniority. As a member of the California Air National Guard, Lacy served a year on active duty in 1961, flying the C-97 Stratofreighter on missions to Japan and Vietnam. In 1964 Lacy flew the first Learjet into Van Nuys Airport, ushering

Camera Systems, Lacy revolutionized air-to-air cinematography in the early 1970s with the development of Astrovision. With full video monitoring to film, the system provided the ability to rotate 360 degrees and tilt up and down with no speed or altitude restrictions. Lacy filmed more than 3,000 projects for the military, feature films and television. He recorded most of the action-packed aerial sequences for the movie Top Gun (1986). Lacy organized and flew several notable aviation projects, including the “Classroom in the Sky” and “Friendship One.” The latter, aboard a Boeing United 747SP, set a round-the-world speed record and also raised $530,000 for children’s charities.

in a new era in corporate air transportation and mobility. Four years later he founded Clay Lacy Aviation as the first jet charter company on the West Coast. Between flying for United Airlines and running his charter business, Lacy also found time to fly his P-51 Mustang in air races across the United States from 1964 to 1972.

Lacy has flown more than 300 aircraft types, logged more than 50,000 flight hours, and accumulated more hours flying

turbine aircraft than any other pilot in the world. He holds 29 world speed records. He has been an important supporter of UND and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. As a member of the UND Aerospace Foundation Board, Lacy provided valuable financial direction and helped cultivate donors. Student Honor Medallions Honor Medallions are worn by candidates for the bachelor’s degree who have at least 50 graded hours from the University of North Dakota and achieve a scholastic average of 3.50 (cum laude), 3.70 (magna cum laude), and 3.90 (summa cum laude) in courses completed at the University of North Dakota. For the purpose of the commencement program and publication, honors are based on the UND grade point average at the end of the previously completed term. Once final semester grades are recorded and the degree has been cleared by the college, grade point averages are recalculated and final graduation honors are recorded to the transcript and diploma.

A UND faculty member, chosen from the ranks of the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors, carries the University flag and leads the commencement procession. The Faculty Flag Marshal at today’s afternoon ceremony is Wayne Seames, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering.

The Faculty Flag Marshal at today’s morning ceremony is Holly Brown-Borg, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Sciences.

After a 16 year industrial career included assignments as a process engineer, engineering supervisor, and project manager, Seames earned his doctorate in chemical engineering in 2000 and joined the UND faculty that fall. He was honored as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in 2011. Dr. Seames has received numerous awards both for teaching and research including the 2018 UND Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education, the 2007 UND Award for Individual Excellence in Research, and the 2013 UND Faculty Scholar Award. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and a former Fulbright Distinguished Chair scholar. Seames is an internationally recognized expert in renewable energy/chemicals technologies and in the environmental impacts of coal utilization. He is a named inventor on eight UND U.S. patents and has received over $21 million in research funding during his 19 year academic career. He is also an accomplished Engineering Educator. His first textbook, “Designing Controls for the Process Industries” was published by CRC Press/Taylor & Francis in 2017. He has delivered over a dozen active teaching workshops, helping over 260 academic instructors to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to advance student learning in engineering and the sciences.

Dr. Brown-Borg has been a UND faculty member since 1995 and was named a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in 2010. She received a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in physiology and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She completed two postdocs, one at the School of Medicine at Southern Illinois University and the other at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska before joining UND. Her research is focused on understanding processes involved in aging and the mechanisms that contribute to healthy aging and longevity. She has served in leadership roles in several societies, regularly reviews grant proposals for NIH, serves on the editorial boards of seven journals, and has more than 100 publications. She is a Fellow of the American Aging Association, the Gerontological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, in which the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility.

continued. To maintain continuity with the past, University of North Dakota faculty, the stage officials and the degree candidates will wear academic dress. Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895.

The ceremony you will witness today will be less formal than would have been the case even two decades ago. Still, many traditions have been

Academic Dress The Gown

North Dakota, the tassel colors associated with academic divisions are: white, College of Arts and Sciences; drab (subdued orange), College of Business and Public Administration; black and white, John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences; blue and white, College of Education and Human Development; orange, School of Engineering and Mines; purple, School of Law; green, School of Medicine; apricot, College of Nursing; black, Graduate School. For undergraduate students, the tassels hang on the right side of the cap until they receive their degrees, at which time the tassel is moved to the left. For master’s students, the tassel hangs on the left side of the cap and is not moved.

The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.

The Hood

The Cap

The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose.

Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University of

so important that it was usually worn around the neck for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office.

The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker. The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement.

The Charter The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions.

The University Flag The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter.

The Medallion A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was

International and Tribal Flags International and tribal flags represent the rich diversity of the UND campus and the wide variety of ethnic backgrounds of the University’s students, faculty, and staff. The international flags and tribal flags

carried in the procession and displayed at the front of the arena are from countries and tribal nations represented in this graduating class.

The First Commencement The following is excerpted from University of the Northern Plains, the history of the University of North Dakota written by Louis G. Geiger and published in 1958 as part of the University’s 75th anniversary celebration. A major milestone in student affairs, as well as in the University’s history, was the graduation of the first college class in 1889. A faculty committee was appointed in February to plan the exercises. In April the student body met and chose the school colors, the pink and green of the prairie rose, “suggestive of our green prairies and rosy prospects.” On June 13, a cool, fair day, the ceremony began at ten o’clock in the University assembly hall, which had been decorated with flags and flowers and a large “89” centerpiece. A capacity crowd of students and spectators (perhaps as many as 250) was on hand as the graduates — “the ladies … dressed in white” and “the gentlemen … neatly attired” — marched to their places on the stage to the accompaniment of music by [W. W.] Hall’s Cadet Band. Special guests were the Regents, H. M. Mellette, governor of the Territory, several other territorial officials [North Dakota did not attain statehood until November 2, 1889], and Nehemiah Ordway, who as governor had signed the organic act of the University. [President Homer B.] Sprague presided and introduced the speakers. Mellette observed that it was a “Red River letter day.” Ordway spoke with pride and feeling on the University’s founding. One of the Regents relieved the occasion with a touch of unconscious humor when he explained: “As to the faculty we have done the best we could with the money at hand.” Following the official commemoration of the occasion, the main part of the program began; there were essays and orations presented by each of the eight graduates, six from the college and two from the four-year normal course; Frances M. Allen (B.A.), Clinton S. DeGroat (B.S.), Ben E. Ingwaldson (B.S.), Cora Smith (B.S.), Marie Teel (B.S.), May Travis (B.A.), and Genevieve Arnold

The Main Building and Ladies’ Hall (later Davis Hall)

The University of North Dakota graduated its first class on June 13, 1889. Seated: Frances M. Allen, B.A.; May Travis, B.A.; Genevieve Arnold, Normal Certificate; and Marie Teel, B.S. Standing: Irene Mares, Normal Certificate; Clinton S. DeGroat, B.S.; Cora Smith, B.S., and Ben E. Ingwaldson, B.S.

and Irene Mares (normal certificates). The orations, on current as well as literary and moral subjects, were printed in full in the Grand Forks newspapers. Three of the college graduates were from Grand Forks; none had come from farther than Hillsboro. Not one had been born in North Dakota; Ben Ingwaldson had been born in Norway. In the class of 1890, of seven college graduates, four were from Grand Forks, three were women, and six took the science degree. A considerable proportion of the early graduates entered medicine, law, or teaching. Cora Smith, a member of the first class, took a degree in medicine at Boston University; Mary Crans of the second class completed the course in dentistry at the University of Michigan. Ben Ingwaldson went on to the University of Minnesota law school. North Dakota’s first appointee to West Point, Joseph Travis, graduated in the class of 1890.

Congratulations and Best Wishes The University of North Dakota is proud to recognize the accomplishments of its graduates and to extend best wishes to them, their families and loved ones.
