A major milestone in student affairs, as well as in the University’s history, was the graduation of the first college class in 1889. A faculty committee was appointed in February to plan the exercises. In April the student body met and chose the school colors, the pink and green of the prairie rose, “suggestive of our green prairies and rosy prospects.” On June 13, a cool, fair day, the ceremony began at ten o’clock in the University assembly hall, which had been decorated with flags and flowers and a large “89” centerpiece. A capacity crowd of students and spectators (perhaps as many as 250) was on hand as the graduates — “the ladies … dressed in white” and “the gentlemen … neatly attired” — marched to their places on the stage to the accompaniment of music by [W. W.] Hall’s Cadet Band. Special guests were the Regents, H. M. Mellette, governor of the Territory, several other territorial officials [North Dakota did not attain statehood until November 2, 1889], and Nehemiah Ordway, who as governor had signed the organic act of the University. [President Homer B.] Sprague presided and introduced the speakers. Mellette observed that it was a “Red River letter day.” Ordway spoke with pride and feeling on the University’s founding. One of the Regents relieved the occasion with a touch of unconscious humor when he explained: “As to the faculty we have done the best we could with the money at hand.” Following the official commemoration of the occasion, the main part of the program began; there were essays and orations presented by each of the eight graduates, six from the college and two from the four-year normal course; Frances M. Allen (B.A.), Clinton S. DeGroat (B.S.), Ben E. Ingwaldson (B.S.), Cora Smith (B.S.), Marie Teel (B.S.), May Travis (B.A.), and Genevieve Arnold

The University of North Dakota graduated its first class on June 13, 1889. Seated: Frances M. Allen, B.A.; May Travis, B.A.; Genevieve Arnold, Normal Certificate; and Marie Teel, B.S. Standing: Irene Mares, Normal Certificate; Clinton S. DeGroat, B.S.; Cora Smith, B.S., and Ben E. Ingwaldson, B.S.
and Irene Mares (normal certificates). The orations, on current as well as literary and moral subjects, were printed in full in the Grand Forks newspapers. Three of the college graduates were from Grand Forks; none had come from farther than Hillsboro. Not one had been born in North Dakota; Ben Ingwaldson had been born in Norway. In the class of 1890, of seven college graduates, four were from Grand Forks, three were women, and six took the science degree. A considerable proportion of the early graduates entered medicine, law, or teaching. Cora Smith, a member of the first class, took a degree in medicine at Boston University; Mary Crans of the second class completed the course in dentistry at the University of Michigan. Ben Ingwaldson went on to the University of Minnesota law school. North Dakota’s first appointee to West Point, Joseph Travis, graduated in the class of 1890.

Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, in which the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility.
continued. To maintain continuity with the past, University of North Dakota faculty, the stage officials and the degree candidates will wear academic dress. Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895.
The ceremony you will witness today will be less formal than would have been the case even a few decades ago. Still, many traditions have been
Academic Dress The Gown
of North Dakota, the tassel colors associated with academic divisions are: white, College of Arts and Sciences; drab (subdued orange), Nistler College of Business and Public Administration; black and white, John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences; light blue, College of Education and Human Development; orange, School of Engineering and Mines; purple, School of Law; green, School of Medicine; apricot, College of Nursing; black, School of Graduate Studies. For undergraduate students, the tassels hang on the right side of the cap until they receive their degrees, at which time the tassel is moved to the left. For master’s and doctoral students, the tassel hangs on the left side of the cap and is not moved.
The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.
The Hood
The Cap
The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose.
Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University
Ceremonial Objects The Mace
important that it was usually worn around the neck for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office.
The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker. The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement.
The Charter The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions.
The University Flag The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter.
The Medallion A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was so
The Awarding of Degrees The awarding of degrees and academic distinctions listed in this program is contingent upon successful completion of the various program requirements. Commencement ceremonies at UND are planned through Ceremonies & University Events in the Division of Marketing & Communications. The University of North Dakota is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution. For more information on equal opportunity policies and procedures, see UND catalogs and other major printed pieces.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT STATEMENT Today, the University of North Dakota rests on the ancestral lands of the Pembina and Red Lake Bands of Ojibwe and the Dakota Oyate - presently existing as composite parts of the Red Lake, Turtle Mountain, White Earth Bands, and the Dakota Tribes of Minnesota and North Dakota. We acknowledge the people who resided here for generations and recognize that the spirit of the Ojibwe and Oyate people permeates this land. As a university community, we will continue to build upon our relations with the First Nations of the State of North Dakota - the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Nation, Spirit Lake Nation, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

Commencement Speaker Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond
Gen. Raymond’s first assignment, as a second lieutenant, placed him within the 321st Strategic Missile Wing at Grand Forks Air Force Base, where he was stationed from 1985 until 1989.
Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond is the Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force. As Chief, he serves as the senior uniformed Space Force officer responsible for organizing, training, and equipping of all Guardians serving in the U.S. and overseas. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the general and other service chiefs function as military advisers to the Secretary of Defense, National Security Council and the President.
While stationed in Grand Forks, Gen. Raymond met his future wife, Mollie, who was attending the University of North Dakota at the time. Thirty-six years after first coming to Grand Forks, Gen. Raymond would once again set foot on campus in August 2021 as he and UND President Andy Armacost signed a historic agreement between the Space Force and UND – an agreement making UND the first member of the Space Force’s University Partnership Program.
Gen. Raymond was commissioned through the ROTC program at Clemson University in 1984. He has commanded at squadron, group, wing, numbered air force, Major Command and Combatant Command levels. Notable staff assignments include serving in the Office of Force Transformation, Office of the Secretary of Defense; the Director of Plans, Programs and Analyses at Air Force Space Command; the Director of Plans and Policy (J5), U.S. Strategic Command; and the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
The memorandum of understanding between the organizations was formed by four goals: research and workforce development; collaborating in research with other universities; establishing educational opportunities for students and ROTC cadets; and developing diverse, STEMcapable graduates for the Space Force. “The Space Force faces some of the toughest challenges in engineering, science, and technology,” said Gen. Raymond during the signing ceremony. “Space is hard. We need our nation’s brightest minds working to help us tackle these problems.”
Gen. Raymond deployed to Southwest Asia as Director of Space Forces in support of operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Prior to leading establishment of the U.S. Space Force and serving as the first Chief of Space Operations, Gen. Raymond led the re-establishment of U.S. Space Command as the eleventh U.S. combatant command.
“That is why we have established the University Partnership Program to harness the innovation at universities across our country,” he continued. “I’m excited to welcome the University of North Dakota as our first official UPP member.”

Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late UND benefactor Chester Fritz, 1892-1983. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” Nominations are solicited from members of the V.P.A.A. Academic Cabinet and the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors; these are evaluated by a committee chaired by the graduate dean and composed of three Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors and faculty representatives from each academic college not represented by a Fritz Professor. The recommendations are reviewed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and forwarded to the President for final decision.

Chester Fritz attended UND from 1908 to 1910. He became an international trader in precious metals and lived most of his life in China and Europe. In establishing the endowment for the professorships — just one of his many gifts to UND — as an “investment in the future of my Alma Mater and of the people who make the future what it shall be.” He added, “I am especially indebted to the fine teachers who, in the end, have determined in large measure, how well I was able to learn and to use the knowledge that the University of North Dakota could provide.” Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors currently serving on the faculty include: Holly Brown-Borg, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Therapeutics Sharon Carson, English Colin Combs, Biomedical Sciences F. Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors Glenda Lindseth
Sean Valentine
Since joining UND’s faculty, Glenda Lindseth has dedicated her career to clinical and behavioral research funded by the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Health and Human Services, among other agencies and organizations.
Since 2016, Sean Valentine has served as the Robert Page Endowed Professor of Leadership and Ethics in the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration. He has taught as a professor of management at UND since 2008. Valentine’s teaching and research focus on business ethics, organizational behavior and human resource management. His 40plus peer-reviewed journal articles have been cited nearly 6,000 times, and he’s regarded as a leading expert in his field.
In addition to her title of Professor, Lindseth has held positions as Director of Nursing Research and most recently as Associate Dean of Nursing Research through her service in the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines.
His research has appeared in leading journals such as the Journal of Business Ethics, Human Relations, Human Resource Management, Journal of Business Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, Behavioral Research in Accounting, and Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management. Valentine is also a co-author of a leading U.S. textbook on human resource management. Now in its sixteenth edition, Valentine has taken over the role of lead author.
Lindseth has served as the principal investigator and project director for the Northern Plains Center for Behavioral Research and the Northern Plains Center for Behavioral Research Translation. Since 2017, Lindseth has directed the Multidisciplinary MARC U-STAR Program at UND – an NIHfunded research training scholarship program for high-achieving underrepresented, undergraduate students who have a goal to pursue graduate studies.
Valentine currently sits on the editorial review boards for Human Resource Development Quarterly, the Journal of Business Research, and the Journal of Business Ethics.
Since 1990, her research on dietary intake, cognition and behavior has been almost continuously funded by external sources – such as NIH and DoD – resulting in more than 40 refereed journal article publications. Her external grant funding has totaled more than $15 million through this period.
“It is evident that Dr. Valentine produces research of the highest quality that is also demonstrably impactful in his field,” wrote one colleague nominating Valentine for the distinction. “I further appreciate the collegiality of Dr. Valentine in his approach to working with co-authors and mentoring junior faculty.”
Many colleagues, writing in support of Lindseth’s nomination, referred to her as a widely recognized health and behavior researcher both regionally and nationally. “For example, Dr. Lindseth and her co-authors were recognized by the Research in Nursing and Health journal as having the ‘Best Paper’ and ‘Tenth Most-Downloaded’ publication in 2017 for her work on Aspartame consumption,” wrote one colleague. “In addition, she received the Ada Sue Hinshaw Research Award from the Friends of the NIH National Institute of Nursing Research for her NIH-funded work on nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. She and our colleagues also won the 2021 National Association of Orthopedic Nurses Research Writers Award for our article on nutrition and post-op delirium.”
Teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in topics similar to his research, Valentine’s students evaluate his teaching style with positivity and praise, wrote another colleague. “Students’ positive evaluations are not because he is a generous grader; in fact, he is stingier than many of his colleagues in the amount of ‘A’s awarded,” the colleague wrote. “Sean helps students prepare for careers in human resource management, and as managers. When I visit with recent alumni, Sean’s name is typically one of the first to come up in conversation.” Throughout his UND career, Valentine has taken an active role in service – regularly serving in his department’s evaluation committee, as well as contributing to the curriculum review and assessment activities for the Human Resource Management major. Valentine also served on the UND Curriculum Committee and the Provost’s task force that recommended significant changes to the tenure and promotion procedures at UND, which are now part of the revised faculty handbook.
In 1996, Lindseth was appointed as a Fellow of the American Dietetic Association, and in 2006 she was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing, one of the field’s highest honors. Lindseth is also well-regarded as a mentor and graduate student committee member. She has served as dissertation chair for 14 Ph.D. nursing students, as a dissertation committee member for 10 Ph.D. students, and as advisor for nearly 50 students for master’s degree theses and independent projects in nursing.
In 2018, Valentine presented “Managing Ethics in Organizations: Current Issues, Opportunities, and Challenges” as part of UND’s prestigious Faculty Lecture Series. His lecture showed the way in which his research involves respondents and empirical data derived from real companies, incorporating real-world processes used by companies to make decisions.
Lindseth has been nominated for and has won several awards for her service at UND, including a nomination for UND’s Excellence Award in Outstanding Graduate/Professional Teaching in 2020. She won a UND Founders Day Outstanding Faculty Scholar Award in 2006, and an Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Award in 2015.
Valentine is a three-time recipient of the North Dakota Spirit Faculty Achievement Award, in 2010, 2011 and 2012, as well as for the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration’s Meritorious Award for Excellence in Research in 2008, 2013 and 2017. In 2016, he received the College’s Meritorious Teaching, Research and Service Award, in 2019 he was nominated for a service award, and in 2021 he received the Overall Meritorious Faculty Award. Recently, he received the Best Paper Award at the 2020 Midwest Academy of Management Meeting and the Distinguished Paper Award at the 2022 Southwest Academy of Management Meeting.
Another colleague said that Lindseth’s influence on faculty, long academic history and demonstrated achievements at UND support her recognition as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Nursing. “Professor Lindseth has served UND, North Dakota and the nation throughout her career,” the colleague said. “Dr. Lindseth’s dedication to teaching students, mentoring peers and conducting meaningful research is evident both in her daily actions here at the College as well as in a review of her curriculum vitae.
“In my opinion, the greatest compliment I can provide a research colleague would be to say that in my working with the colleague, my skillset and acumen for producing high quality research has improved as a result,” wrote one of Valentine’s past collaborators. “Dr. Valentine has earned this compliment.
“Her successful acquisition and coordination of major grant funding not only adds to the success of the College and UND, but also supports development of future scholars and adds to scientific knowledge in nutrition and human performance. Her interdisciplinary work has brought together colleagues across campus to advance the science that will improve the lives of many.”
“I, along with many other of my colleagues, see Dr. Valentine as a respected and collegial, highly productive faculty member who has made significant and valuable contributions to the quality of UND’s academic programs.”

Honorary Degrees Awarded Honorary degrees have long been awarded by institutions of higher learning to recognize lives of achievement. In 1909 UND presented its first honorary degree, a Doctor of Laws, to Webster Merrifield, who served the University for 25 years, including 18 as its third president. Honorary degrees from UND particularly recognize those with an association with the University or with the state and region. 1909, 1913, 1914, 1916, 1918, 1922, 1925, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1938, 1938, 1939, 1939, 1941, 1941, 1943, 1943, 1943, 1944, 1944, 1944, 1945, 1945, 1946, 1946, 1946, 1947, 1947, 1947, 1948, 1948, 1948, 1948, 1948, 1948, 1949, 1949, 1949, 1949, 1950, 1950, 1951, 1951, 1951, 1951, 1951, 1952, 1952, 1952, 1953, 1953, 1954, 1954, 1954, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1956, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1958,

Honorary Degrees Henry Herr
Through these endeavors, Herr helped pioneer transformational changes that have improved the patient experience, delivered high-quality care, reduced costs, and create value for investors and employees.
Henry Herr is a respected accountant and business man who earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting from UND in 1968 and 1971. Herr was selected for UND’s Accounting Hall of Fame in 2011 and received a Sioux Award from the UND Alumni Association & Foundation in 2015.
Herr served as CFO for Healthways until 2001 and remained on its Board of Directors until 2009. He served as CFO for AmSurg from 1992 to 1994, then on the Board of Directors until 2016, when the company completed its merger with Envision Healthcare.
Over the course of his career, Henry built companies that transformed the health care landscape.
In addition to his success in business, Herr has also become known for his philanthropy. At UND, in particular, Herr has endowed a professorship, an endowed chair, and multiple funds in the Department of Accountancy. But the only such endowment to bear his name is the Herr Family Scholarship Endowment.
Born and raised in Bismarck, N.D., Herr served in the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division following his 1968 graduation from UND. After earning a Bronze Star for his service in the Vietnam War, Herr returned to UND for his master’s degree. After UND, Herr went to Portland, Ore., to work for Arthur Young & Co., now known as Ernst & Young – one of the country’s largest public accounting firms. He started as an auditor, then specialized as a management consultant in healthcare finance. Herr went on to become an entrepreneurial leader in the industry, developing a model of investment in preventative care and wellness.
In total, Herr’s gifts to the Department of Accountancy and the Nistler College of Business and Public Administration exceed $10 million. These endowments honor the legacy of UND Accountancy and the Nistler College and provide enduring support for faculty, technology, scholarships, and experiential learning resources enhancing the department’s ability to deliver highquality programs to future generations of students.
Herr helped to found Healthways in 1981 and AmSurg in 1992. Serving as CFO, a member of each company’s board, and an executive leader, he helped create thousands of jobs, served millions of patients, and grew the firms into companies with market capitalizations in the billions of dollars.
“Henry Herr exemplifies the core values of the Nistler College,” said Kate Campbell, professor, and chair of the Department of Accountancy. “He is thoughtful, observant, and principled in every endeavor.
His work with these healthcare companies helped transform Nashville, Tenn., into a leader of innovation in the healthcare industry. When the Nashville Health Care Council developed a timeline with a history of the city’s industry, Healthways and AmSurg were recognized as “health care organizations with national footprints.”
“Henry often comments on the importance of curiosity, and this underlies not only entrepreneurial success, but also the spirit of educational endeavor, including the discovery dimension of UND’s mission and values.”
Molly Yeh
Her blog was named Food Blog of the Year by both Yahoo and Saveur Magazine in 2015, and she has since contributed to many prominent magazines such as Conde Nast Traveler and Food 52. Her debut cookbook, “Molly on the Range: Recipes and stories from an unlikely life on a farm,” published in 2016 and won the Judges’ Choice IACP Cookbook Award in 2017.
Molly Yeh is an award-winning food blogger, cookbook author and host of Food Network’s “Girl Meets Farm.” Originally from Chicago, Yeh graduated from The Julliard School in New York City with a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion in 2011. Prior to earning her degree, Yeh made her Carnegie Hall debut at 17, performed with orchestras around the world and appeared on multiple classical music programs on television and radio.
In 2018, she published her second book, “Yogurt,” and her upcoming cookbook, “Home is Where the Eggs Are,” is set to publish this September. The success of Yeh’s blogging and cookbook writing led to several appearances on Food Network television programs, as well as a place on Forbes’ “30 under 30” class of 2017.
While at The Julliard School, Yeh co-founded a student newspaper and received the Journal Award and the Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music.
In June 2018, the Food Network debuted “Girl Meets Farm,” a show starring Yeh that’s filmed at her East Grand Forks home. More than 100 episodes of “Girl Meets Farm” have aired to date, and Yeh was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Culinary Host in 2019.
It was at Julliard where she met her future husband, Nick Hagen, a fifth-generation farmer from the Greater Grand Forks region. The two moved to East Grand Forks in 2013 and to the Hagen family farm north of East Grand Forks shortly thereafter. They were married in 2014.
Yeh and her husband’s connections to UND have been featured in multiple episodes of the show, and Hagen is a member of UND’s Trombone Choir.
Yeh has written that during her time studying music in New York, she fell wildly in love with food. Her new passion set the stage for the success of her blog, “mynameisyeh.”
With a following on Instagram nearing 800,000, Yeh often features regional cuisine both in her show and on social media. She’s also been featured in and on the cover of the Greater Grand Forks Visitor Guide.
“I’ve documented my life in journals since the day I could write, and since 2009, this blog has been an extension of that,” wrote Yeh on her website. “Most of my posts include recipes inspired by my Jewish and Asian roots and my Midwestern surroundings, bits about life around the farm or tales from adventures near and far.”
Her tremendous success helps to both educate about the distinctive agricultural, cultural and culinary heritage of the northern plains and Red River Valley and promote it to the national stage and beyond.

Honorary Degrees Delore Zimmerman
Also, through his research, Zimmerman authored “The Mobilization of Territorial Alliances to Enhance Economic Development” and co-authored “High-Performance Communities: New Economy Ideas into Action” with economist Phil Burgess. He has also co-authored “Redeveloping America’s Productive Capacity: A Heartland Development Strategy” with professor and author Joel Kotkin for the New America Foundation.
Delore Zimmerman, founder and president of Praxis Strategy Group, earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in sociology from UND in 1976 and 1979 before earning his Ph.D. in sociology, economic geography and environment from Pennsylvania State University in 1986. A native of Wishek, N.D., Zimmerman is an economic strategist, researcher, activist and developer with more than 30 years of both domestic and international experience, working with local and regional economic development groups, companies, universities and non-profit organizations.
Zimmerman founded Praxis Strategy Group in 1994. Headquartered in Grand Forks, Praxis Strategy Group is an economic research, strategy, planning and development company that works with community leaders and entrepreneurs in business, government, education and the civic sector.
His work with hundreds of entrepreneurs and dozens of communities has led him to advising technology, agriculture and economic development organizations in Wales, England, South Korea and Tanzania, in addition to his decades of work in the Greater Grand Forks region.
Praxis Strategy Group is active in community strategic planning throughout the Red River Valley region, and, in 2009, expanded to create Praxis Africa. This organization is working in Africa to support advanced, sustainable solutions related to agriculture, food, water and energy. Praxis Africa partners with entrepreneurs in West Africa as well as North American companies that are looking to create business relationships on the African continent.
He currently serves as the Interim Executive Director of the Valley Prosperity Partnership, a coalition led by business executives in the Red River Valley and joined by leaders of the Valley’s higher education institutions and economic development organizations to advance strategic initiatives for common economic goals.
One nominator for Zimmerman’s honorary degree, Daphne Pedersen, Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor of Sociology, said that his leadership of Praxis is “symbolic of the impact he has had within North Dakota, the Midwest region and outside the United States, including extensive work throughout Africa.”
Zimmerman also co-founded and co-manages the Red River Corridor Fund, and is president of the Red River Angel Fund, which makes equity investments in small businesses with innovative ideas and high potential.
“Dr. Zimmerman truly has a professional record of ‘praxis’ - facilitating and creating real change among entrepreneurs and organizations – in community development, particularly within rural landscapes,” Pedersen said.
As a researcher, Zimmerman has been awarded eight Small Business Innovation Research awards funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. Through such grants, Zimmerman developed leading-edge practices and tools for use by community leaders to work more effectively with entrepreneurs in building competitive, innovationbased economies.
In 2014, Zimmerman was awarded an “Outstanding Alumni Award” by the Pennsylvania State University Department of Sociology and Criminology. He currently serves on the department’s alumni advisory board.

UND History With help from more than 150,000 proud alumni, UND’s traditions have endured for more than a century. Our history is colorful and diverse. From educators to political leaders and astronauts, our alumni credit UND for their successes. Here are some facts: • UND was founded in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly — six years before North Dakota became a state. • The cornerstone for Old Main — UND’s first building and where the Eternal Flame in the Old Main Memorial Plaza now stands — was laid in the fall of 1883. • As part of its evolution into a full-fledged, multi-purpose University, UND added research and the instruction of graduate students (the first master’s degree was awarded in 1895) before the end of the 19th century. • Four faculty members met the 11 students who entered the University on opening day, September 8, 1884.
Science Lab
• Three U.S. Presidents have visited campus: Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan. • The first class of eight students graduated on June 13, 1889. • Unlike most state institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi, UND did not begin as an agricultural school or as a teachers college. It was organized initially as a College of Arts & Sciences, with a Normal School for the education of teachers.

The Mace of the University The ceremonial mace was first a practical weapon intended to protect the king and borne by the Sergeants-at-Arms, a royal bodyguard. The history of the civic mace begins about the middle of the 13th century. Since about the 15th century, universities have displayed a mace as a symbol of both internal authority and the independence of the scholarly tradition. The mace of the University of North Dakota came into being at the direction of George W. Starcher, president from 1954 to 1971. In 1963 he approached Alvin Rudisill, chairman of the Industrial Arts Department, with the idea of creating a mace with materials from “Old Main,” UND’s first building. Condemned for decades for its severe structural deficiencies, Old Main was being demolished as administrative offices had moved to the newly completed Twamley Hall. Rudisill turned to one of his students, Dennis Kulas, who was also pursuing a minor in art. Kulas crafted a mace in wood and then a second, when some thought the first might be too heavy for ceremonial use. The first one is the mace that has been carried at the front of all commencement ceremonies since. Kulas explained the artistic ideas he incorporated into his design: “The theme used for making the mace was like a drop of water falling into a body of water, its effects sending out ripples throughout the water. Likewise, a little learning affects everyone by sending out knowledge to all four corners of the Earth, hence the design. The globe: symbolizing the Earth. The rings: symbolizing a drop of knowledge ever spreading throughout the Earth. The four spikes: emphasizing the four corners of the Earth.” The second mace used the same theme, but the globe was hollowed out to make it lighter by using recessed rings.
