April 28, 2011 - UNF announces the

addition of sand volleyball as a varsity sport, giving North Florida 19 varsity athletics programs. The Ospreys were one of over 20 schools throughout the nation to add the emerging sport. Current indoor assistant volleyball coach Emily Strack became the first beach volleyball signee, while some indoor members filled other spots on the inaugural roster.

March 9, 2012 - UNF claimed the first win in program history with a 4-1 defeat of Jacksonville.

The pair of Carolyn Jenkins and Emily Strack won in straight sets, putting UNF ahead 1-0 for the first individual match victory in Osprey program history. UNF and Jacksonville met April 21 with North Florida topping the Dolphins, 3-2.

April 22, 2012 - The first year ended

with the program’s first ASUN title thanks to strong play throughout the lineup. North Florida went 4-0 over the two-day competition. Head coach Steve Loeswick was named ASUN Coach of the Year while Anna Budinska and Dagnija Medina picked up ASUN Pair of the Year recognition.

April 21, 2013 -

A win against FGCU the day before and two triumphs against Stetson gave North Florida its second ASUN title in as many seasons. UNF won 4-1 and 3-2 respectively against the Hatters, finishing the year 11-0 in matches played against foes from the ASUN. UNF secured an automatic bid to the AVCA Sand Nationals via the victory.

April 24, 2016 - Fast forward a few years and you find the Ospreys back on top of the ASUN once again. UNF won a grinder, 3-2, against No. 1 Stetson to clinch the title. While the Ospreys did not receive a bid to the national tournament, UNF finished the year with a program-best 24 victories. North Florida defeated Stetson (twice), FAU (twice), South Carolina and Grand Canyon that year.

feb. 22, 2019 - Opening day was a fun day in 2019.

The Ospreys swept a pair of matches with Chaney Howard and Antonia Harrison clinching a thrilling 3-2 win against No. 19 TCU down in Boca Raton. North Florida went on to post its second 20-win season in program history.

Sept. 9, 2019 - After hosting home

events in St. Augustine, Fla., or at nearby Jacksonville Beach, on this day it was made public that UNF beach volleyball would have a home on campus. “The Coop” as it was to be known, was another step towards UNF beach volleyball’s continued rise to the forefront of the burgeoning sport.

Feb. 8, 2020 - This day marked a historic

day for the University of North Florida and the UNF beach volleyball program with the opening of The Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex. “The Coop” features five sand courts, a digital scoreboard and stands. UNF’s first official practice took place two days prior, while the first official matches were played Feb. 21.

April 25, 2021 - The title came back to North Florida on this day in DeLand.

UNF dug deep, winning the semifinals match against FGCU, 3-2, and the finals match against No. 16 Stetson, 3-2. Dana Roskic and Antonia Harrison clinched the win for UNF at the top slot. It was UNF’s first win against Stetson since 2016.

April 27, 2021 - After the champion-

ship run, UNF got the icing on the cake by claiming an AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll ranking. It was the first-ever ranking in the AVCA Poll. UNF was ranked No. 20 on May 4 and 11, closing out the season in the national poll.

May 4, 2021 - Dana Roskic and Antonia Harrison received one of the highest honors for a pair after being named an AVCA Top Flight honoree.

2021 - Catching Fire: The Ospreys won the

ASUN Championship in dramatic fashion, defeating three-time reigning ASUN Champions, No. 16 Stetson, on its home courts. UNF had to go the long way to get to the finals. UNF raced ahead to a 2-0 lead before Stetson evened the match.

the cooper beach volleyball complex first competition: feb. 21, 2020

The Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex became one of the premiere on-campus beach volleyball campus facilities in collegiate athletics when it opened February 8, 2020. “The Coop” is located just north of the UNF Softball Complex and features five courts, a digital scoreboard and bleachers that seat a capacity of 300. University of North Florida beach volleyball held its inaugural season in 2012, and since then the Ospreys have hosted home events at Jacksonville Beach, Jacksonville University or in St. Augustine, Fla. Osprey beach volleyball held its inaugural contests on campus Friday, Feb. 21 when it hosted FIU, FAU, Georgia State and Mercer in a historic day for the University of North Florida. The final push to complete the construction’s funding came from the generous donation from Dwight and Christine Cooper’s “Cooper Family Foundation”. A resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Dwight Cooper is a member of the UNF Foundation Board, former UNF assistant men’s basketball coach (1991-95), founder and CEO of Hueman People Solutions and founder of the Fortune magazine featured PPR Talent Management Group located in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The sand was provided by Vulcan Materials Company and the beach volleyball regulation netting was constructed by Robert “Butch” Hendrick and Sand Court Experts.

The Coop makes an on-campus home for a program that has seen great success in a short amount of time. UNF beach volleyball holds two ASUN Championships , three ASUN Regular Season Championships and an overall record of 138-87. North Florida has also sent individuals to the AVCA Sand Nationals during two the 2012, 2013 and 2014 campaigns.

leyball program will now have a home on campus as released by the UNF Athletics Department Monday, September 9. DOUG WRIGHT HEAD COACH (1ST SEASON // 5TH OVERALL) ST. FRANCIS (PA.)

Doug Wright took over as head coach of the beach volleyball program Nov. 5, 2021 after serving for four-plus years in a volunteer and interim head coaching role. Four Years of Success at UNF Wright’s hire marks the first time the UNF beach volleyball and indoor volleyball programs have separate head coaches since the inception of the beach volleyball program roughly a decade ago. The move furthers UNF’s emphasis on growing its national brand and presence of its beach volleyball program, coming on the wings of the construction of UNF’s first on-campus beach facility in the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex opened in February of 2020. Wright served as an integral piece to the program for the past four seasons, doing more than his titles of volunteer assistant and interim head coach could do justice. The Ospreys won the 2021 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship during a year that saw Wright handle an even larger portion of the coaching duties as then head coach, Kristen Wright, handled the non-traditional spring indoor volleyball season. Since coming to the River City in December of 2017, Wright has helped guide the Ospreys to a 65-42 overall record, an ASUN Championship and another appearance in the ASUN Finals. Additionally, the 2021 Ospreys earned the program’s first-ever ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll April 27 of last year following the Ospreys’ run to the conference title. UNF was also a regular in the Collegebeachvb. com Poll last season as North Florida finished 24-10. Last year the Ospreys defeated three ranked teams in No. 11 FAU, No. 20 FGCU and No. 16 Stetson. North Florida had six all-conference picks in addition to Dana Roskic and Antonia Harrison’s AVCA Top Flight recognition. The Ospreys have also touted incredible success in the classroom since 2018. The beach program earned USMC/AVCA Team Academic Awards as well as a team GPA of 3.78 and a 100 percent rate of student-athletes on the ASUN Honor Roll. A visionary, Wright was instrumental in the development of The Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex, even going as far as to create artwork that was shared with donors and board members for the eventual design of UNF’s on-campus complex. Wright came to North Florida after serving with the MiraCosta Col-

lege beach program over the last two seasons. Wright led the team to two conference championships and a state championship during his time. In 2017, he was also named the Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year. He also spent time as the associate head coach for the indoor program at MiraCosta where he worked closely with his wife Kristen Wright to win two conference championships. Prior to UNF Prior to his time at MiraCosta, Wright was an assistant coach for TriCity Christian that won eight straight CIF Championships, five So-Cal State titles and had five state championship appearances. He also coached the top men’s and women’s team from age 16 and 18 while earning the clubs first 18-1’s Gold Medal at Far Western Qualifier and Bid to National Championships. Earned Bronze Medal at Los Angeles Qualifier. Wright was recruited as a setter and received an athletic scholarship to Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa. He was a four-year starter as a libero where he helped lead the Red Flash to their first-ever EIVA-HAY Division title. He reached as high as the top 10 in the country for digs/game and concluded his career in the top ten all-time in school history in that category. Wright holds the distinction as being the only person from his high school to earn a volleyball scholarship. He played for Red Rose and Lancaster Volleyball club, earning three trips to the Junior Olympics. His experience playing indoor volleyball expanded to the grass and beach at age 16 when he started playing tournaments. In addition to coaching, Wright is a CPA and currently works as an analyst for a government contractor that investigates fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicare. He is married to Kristen and they have two children. SOPHIE BECKLEY GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH (1ST SEASON) MINNESOTA

Former UNF beach volleyball student-athlete Sophie Beckley joins the North Florida Beach Volleyball coaching staff prior to the 2022 season as a graduate assistant coach. Beckley was a two-year letterwinner for the Ospreys, playing on the 2021 ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship squad while seeing her first year of competition in 2020. The Seattle, Wash., native appeared in 22 matches at the University of Minnesota where she was a member of the Gophers volleyball team. Beckley was on the squad that reached the 2015 and 2016 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Final Four, as well as the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Sweet Sixteen. A two-time ASUN Honor Roll student, Beckler earned her B.S. in ecology and is working towards her M.S. in biology at UNF.

MADILYN MCCARTY VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH (1ST SEASON) NORTH FLORIDA

Madilyn McCarty joined the North Florida beach volleyball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach in March of 2022. McCarty is no stranger to UNF, having competed as one of the top performers on the indoor and beach volleyball programs during her time at North Florida. The Springfield, Ill., native arrived prior to the 2017 season as a transfer from Winthrop University. On the indoor side, McCarty totaled 2,291 assists, 226 kills, 576 digs and 146 blocks, playing as one of the most versatile setters in the ASUN. McCarty finished her UNF career seventh all-time in assists and fourth in the UNF DI-era.

On the beach side, McCarty won 44 matches, including two seasons with 21 wins apiece. In 2019 she was a Second Team All-ASUN selection alongside Nicole DeBolt. McCarty ranks 13th in total victories. McCarty earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degree from North Florida.

Why I Chose UNF “I chose UNF because of the amazing staff, coaches, players and campus. The positive and loving atmosphere ensures that you feel like you’re a part of a family, and I have felt that since day one.” Wright’s Words “We are thrilled to have Caleigh and her family join the Osprey family. Caleigh is a superb student-athlete and will keep up the strong trend of academic excellence among our team. Caleigh brings the size and physicality we look for to play at the national level that we want to compete at. Originally an indoor player who has transitioned to the beach, we are excited to watch her blossom as a beach only player with exceptional training. Caleigh recently moved to Florida and will be training at a reputable club for beach. We look forward to her arrival next fall.”
