MEDIA INFORMATION

The 2023 University of North Florida volleyball media guide is designed to aid members of the media covering Osprey volleyball. As for the media, we appreciate your coverage, and if there is anything we can do to assist, please contact the North Florida Athletic Strategic Communications Office.

NORTH FLORIDA ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS

The North Florida Athletic Communications Office is located on the first floor of UNF Arena in Room 1062. Entering the arena through the front entrance, the office can be accessed by going past the main office, through two sets of double doors and going to your left.

CREDENTIAL REQUESTS

The North Florida Athletic Communications Office will issue credentials to WORKING press only. All passes will be left at the Will Call table in UNF Arena.

VISITING RADIO

All visiting radio crews MUST request credentials through their school’s sports information director. Please make arrangements well in advance so necessary arrangements can be made.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Only photographers shooting for accredited media outlets or for North Florida Athletic Communications will be allowed to shoot home events from courtside. No photographers are permitted along the team benches, in the team areas or in front of the courtside press row tables. Flash photography is allowed only from the upper level of UNF Arena.

POST-MATCH INTERVIEWS

Following a 10-minute “cooling off” period, a post-match press conference will take place on the court. The North Florida Athletic Communications staff will poll the media prior to the end of the match to determine which players will be made available after the match. The visiting coach and players will be made available outside their locker room. Pre-game interviews are NOT allowed.

INTERVIEWS

Most practices are open to the media and public. However, there may be instances when all or parts of practice are closed. Daily practices typically run 9-12 p.m. at the UNF Fieldhouse, but practice times are subject to change. Contact the Athletic Strategic Communications Office for practice times and to set up any interviews with North Florida players and coaches.

PARKING

Limited parking for the media is located in the parking lot directly behind UNF Arena. Access to the lot is gained by turning beside UNF Arena on the south end access road.

MATCH NOTES

The North Florida Athletic Strategic Communications Office produces a release at least one day prior to each match. The release and “match notes” includes pertinant information about the Ospreys and North Florida’s opponent.

KRISTEN WRIGHT HEAD COACH SIXTH SEASON (INDOOR) | SAN DIEGO ‘06

Kristen Wright is coming off her fifth indoor volleyball season as the head volleyball coach for the UNF Indoor Volleyball program after joining North Florida in December 2017. In the spring of 2022, Wright received a two-year contract extension running through the fall 2024 season. Wright comes from MiraCosta College where she was the head coach of the junior college program. Wright touts a 153-93 career record leading the two indoor programs and was named to Volleyballmag.com’s Under 40 Coaching Hotshot List Jan. 6, 2020.

After four seasons on the indoor side, Wright is 73-75. Wright also spent four seasons as the head coach of the beach volleyball program, bringing an ASUN Championship back to North Florida in April of 2021 as she was named ASUN Beach Volleyball Coach of the Year. She helped set multiple program records in the fall 2021 season as the Ospreys finished a DI-era best, 25-8, making the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

Fall 2022

The fall 2022 season was a unique year as the Ospreys spent the preseason and much of the regular season practicing in multiple locations as the UNF Arena underwent the construction of the CSI Companies Court. After battling through injuries and finally settling into the UNF Arena, the Ospreys finished 9-7 in league play and 12-17 overall.

UNF’s 9-7 mark in league play marked a third-straight over .500 record in conference competition, the first time North Florida has done that in three-straight campaigns during UNF’s DI days. UNF defeated eventual ASUN Champion, FGCU, as well as Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State in five sets, proving North Florida against the top teams in the league once again.

The non-conference slate was one of UNF’s hardest to date as the Ospreys faced six Power Five opponents in Virginia, Florida, Kansas State, Syracuse, Auburn and Iowa. North Florida also played five matches against teams that made the 2021 NCAA Championship.

UNF eventually settled into its renovated home at the UNF Arena with the completion of the new CSI Companies Court. North Florida played two matches in November on the new floor, going 2-0 with wins against Jacksonville and Stetson. Prior to that, UNF had played all games as the road team, with UNF’s home games truly being neutral site meetings at Jacksonville’s Swisher Gymnasium. UNF went 4-2 during those neutral site games.

The Ospreys reeled in six weekly honors per the ASUN, with Rocio Moro leading the way with a trio of ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors. The record-setting libero earned the honors Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14. Mahalia White was named ASUN Player of the Week Oct. 24 after helping UNF to wins against Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State. Joining Moro and White as weekly honorees Oct. 24 was freshman setter Savannah Cook, who earned freshman of the week honors. Cook added a second award to her totals Nov. 7.

After adding to her conference record total for ASUN Defensive Player of the Week honors, Moro made it three-straight ASUN Defensive Player of the Year honors. Moro became the first-ever ASUN Volleyball student-athlete to do so in three-straight years, doing so thanks to a conference-high total for digs and digs/set.

Outside hitter Mahalia White joined Moro on the ASUN All-Conference team, picking up second team all-league honors with 393 kills and a conference highwater mark for kills/set and points/set. She reached double-digit kills on 21 occasions, posting at least 20 kills on five instances. Nov. 6 against Jacksonville, White posted 28 kills, two shy of the UNF four-set match kills record.

North Florida had a pair of ASUN All-Freshman honorees for the second time in Wright’s five-year tenure, as Cook and Kierstyn McFall were tabbed to the team. Cook emerged as the team’s starting setter in late September and paced all ASUN freshmen setters in assists/set during league play. McFall showed consistency all season long, starting all but one match while surpassing 100 blocks for the season. McFall paced the team in blocks, posting the most blocks by an ASUN freshman as well as the most blocks by a UNF freshman in UNF’s DI era.

Wright and the Ospreys saw the depature of five-year standout outside hitter, Solimar Cestero, the longest tenured student-athlete during head coach Kristen Wright’s tenure. Cestero played all five years under Wright, finishing seventh in UNF history for kills while setting the program record for sets played and matches played.

Dec. 4 - The Ospreys sweep Troy to claim their first win in December in UNF DI history.

North Florida’s banner season included record highs for RPI, conference wins and overall wins. The Ospreys concluded the year with a No. 75 RPI, earning the right to play in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

The Ospreys made their first appearance in postseason play past ASUN Championship competition with the outing in the NIVC. North Florida advanced past UNC Greensboro and swept Troy before bowing out in the quarterfinals at UConn.

Wright and the Ospreys started off the season 7-0, the team’s best start through seven games in the Division I-era. UNF ranked in the top tennationally for winning percentage for much of the year, reaching a 20-3 after defeating Lipscomb Oct. 24 for the first time since 2012.

The Navy and Gray were propelled by a staunch roster that was extremely deep. Six players finished with at least 150 kills, North Florida implemented a highly successful 6-2 rotation that led to a conference-best assist total and UNF had four players with at least 50 blocks.

UNF made history with postseason honors as well, with Rocio Moro and Dariana Hollingsworth-Santana both receiving First Team All-ASUN honors. It was the first time since 2012 that North Florida had a pair on the first team, while Moro nabbed ASUN Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second time in as many seasons. Freshman setter Annie Antar was named to the All-ASUN Freshman Team, marking the second time in three seasons that a UNF setter has garnered the award in three seasons.

Graduate student Gabby O’Connell, a staple in the UNF program and one of the best in school history, became the first Osprey since 1999 to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team recognition for consecutive seasons. O’Connell, who played four seasons under Kristen Wright, became just the third Osprey in program history to reach 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs, 100 aces, 100 assists and 100 blocks. Spring

Helped lead the Ospreys to a 10-10 overall record and 8-4 mark in ASUN play ... Led UNF to its best winning percentage in conference play since joining the ASUN ... North Florida’s 10-10 finish was the Ospreys’ first finish of .500 or better since the 2016 campaign ... Coached the Ospreys past eventual ASUN-runner up FGCU on two occasions, winning 3-1 at home while sweeping them on the road ... Completed two wins against FGCU in the same season for the first time in program history ... Outside hitter Gabby O’Connell became the first ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year in program history ... Libero Rocio Moro was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Year, UNF’s first honoree since 2014 ... Saw setter Julianna Askew surpass 2,000-assists in less than two full seasons ... The Ospreys reached as high as 87th in the RPI rankings, a year after finishing 257th ... Swept a four-match series against Jacksonville, improving to 8-0 all-time against Jacksonville.

Despite the oddities and challenges presented by the Spring 2021 season, the third-year indoor head coach posted her best season yet, leading the Ospreys to a second-place finish in the ASUN South Division. North Florida went 8-4 in league play and 10-10 overall, playing seven top-100 teams, an ACC opponent and UCF on two occasions.

North Florida’s best season in ASUN play per winning percentage was highlighted by its meteoric rise in the RPI rankings. UNF ascended to as high as 87th in the RPI polls, while finishing the season 113th. It was a massive jump considering North Florida’s 257th finish in 2019 and 262nd mark at the end of the 2018 season.

UNF completed a number of firsts in Wright’s third year at the helm. For the first time in a storied-history against rival FGCU, UNF claimed two wins in the same season against the Eagles. The Ospreys overwhelmed FGCU, 3-1, February 14 before going down and completing their first road win against FGCU in a sweep March 6.

Despite being down 0-2 at Stetson February 25, UNF caught fire to turn in a reverse-sweep comeback win against the Hatters. It was North Florida’s first win against Stetson since 2017, and a win that keyed North Florida the rest of the season.

As for individual performers, UNF’s household names made their mark while newcomers added a huge lift, signaling a bright future.

Graduate student outside hitter Gabby O’Connell put together one of the most well-rounded seasons in the ASUN and in the country, finishing over 3.00 digs/set and 3.00 kills/set in conference play. O’Connell was a second-team all-conference pick and the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leading the league in kills in a season that saw her join Paige Pridgeon as the only Ospreys in UNF DI history to be in the 1,000-kill and 1,000dig club.

Setter Julianna Askew joined in reaching new milestones, climbing to 2,063-career assists, good for fourth in UNF DI history. Classmate Rocio Moro put up 398 digs and 5.24 digs/set, both league bests, helping her earn ASUN Defensive Player of the Year honors and 1,031 digs for her tenure.

Wright and staff saw middle blocker Maddie Boyd blossom as a sophomore, while junior transfer Bre Walp accompanied Boyd with big numbers at the same position. The duo was one of the best blocking pairs in the league, with Walp posting 0.89 blocks/set and Boyd 0.82.

New additions Kailey McKnight and Logan O’Brien provided a glimpse of big things to come in the future. As freshmen they appeared in a combined 38 matches.McKnight collected 14 kills in her collegiate debut, the most by a UNF freshman in their debut since O’Connell in 2016. O’Brien registered 1.92 digs/set and 239 receptions as a key contributor at defensive specialist.

2019 Indoor Volleyball

Notables:

Tied a program record with nine weekly all-conference honors ... Freshman Rocio Moro led all NCAA Division I freshman in digs (633) and classmate Julianna Askew paced all Division I rookies in assists (1,296) ... Senior Taryn Griffey became the first player in UNF DI history to reach 1,000 kills and 300 blocks, while also setting the DI era record for solo blocks (49) ... Defeated first place Kennesaw State, 3-1, to hand the Owls their first loss to UNF since 2013 ... Had three players selected as ASUN Postseason All-Conference honorees in Rocio Moro and Julianna Askew (ASUN All-Freshman) along with Solimar Cestero (Second Team All-ASUN) ... Finished fifth in the nation in kills with the third-most in program history ... Sophomore Solimar Cestero set the UNF rally scoring era for kills in a match with 30 during a 3-1 win at Bethune-Cookman ... Cestero led the league in kills (410), over 200 more than her mark from the previous season.

UNF clinched a berth in the ASUN Championship for the second time in as many seasons since Wright took over as the Ospreys went 15-18 and 7-9 in conference play.

Headlining the 2019 campaign was UNF’s 3-1 win against the eventual ASUN Champions, Kennesaw State, Oct. 27. The Ospreys dropped the first set before taking the final three. It was UNF’s first triumph against the Owls since 2013.

Sophomore Solimar Cestero led the Ospreys with 15 kills during the memorable win Oct. 27, but it wasn’t the only time she would pace North Florida offensively. The second-year player led the conference in kills with 410 in the regular season, helping UNF finish fifth in NCAA Division I in that category.

The Toa Baja, P.R., native shouldered the load for the better half of the season following redshirt-junior Gabby O’Connell’s season-ending injury in October. One of Cestero’s most notable days was her 30-kill explosion in a 3-1 road win against Bethune-Cookman Nov. 5. It was only the second time a UNF player has reached 30 kills and it was the most for a North Florida player in the rally scoring era.

Setter Julianna Askew was a big reason for the Ospreys’ offensive success. The rookie led the nation’s freshman in assists with 1,296, earning two ASUN Freshman of the Week awards and an ASUN All-Freshman team selection. The Wilmington, N.C., native tallied seven double-doubles, one triple-double, had the most kills among ASUN setters and even put up 70 assists against FIU Sept. 14.

Askew was joined by classmate Rocio Moro on the ASUN All-Freshman team, and for good reason. Moro was selected four times as ASUN Freshman of the Week, leading the nation’s rookies in digs with 633 and becoming the second UNF player in program history to average more than five digs-per-set.

Wright’s lone senior Taryn Griffey went out in style, posting 359 kills, 82 blocks and a .313 hitting percentage. Griffey became the first UNF DI player to have at least 1,000 kills and 300 blocks and also set the UNF DI record for solo blocks with 49.

The second-year coach at the DI level hit a personal milestone with a 3-1 win against North Alabama Oct. 18. With that win she claimed her 100th career victory as a head indoor coach between her time at MiraCosta College (CCCAA) and North Florida.

2018 Indoor Volleyball

Notables:

Played teams from nine different conferences including Tennessee (No. 26) and Colorado (No. 15) ... Solimar Cestero was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team and was a one-time honoree as ASUN Freshman of the Week ...

Taryn Griffey was UNF’s representative as the ASUN Winner for Life ... Sophomore Devyn Wheeler tied the UNF single-match record for blocks with 11 in a 3-2 win against the defending Summit League champs, North Dakota ... Redshirt-sophomore Gabby O’Connell put up 13 double-doubles in her return from an injury suffered the year before.

Kristen Wright’s first year in Jacksonville saw the Ospreys garner a spot in the ASUN Championship. UNF bowed out of postseason play after falling to No. 3 Lipscomb November 15, 3-1.

Freshman Solimar Cestero had a big season under Wright, earning ASUN All-Freshman Team honors and the ASUN Freshman Player of the Week honor for September 10. Cestero tallied 197 kills, good for third on the team.

Junior Taryn Griffey was an integral part of the North Florida volleyball team in 2018 and earned a spot on the Fall Winners for Life team. The middle blocker posted career-highs in kills (17) against Oral Roberts, while also posting a new career-high with 10 blocks against New Mexico later in the season. The Wildwood, Mo., native garnered three all-tournament selections and finished the season with career highs in kills (317) and blocks (105).

Madilyn McCarty surpassed 3,000 assists for her Division I career and finished sixth in UNF history in assists (2,291). She posted 1,050 assists throughout the campaign, earning all-tournament honors at the Owls Classic.

Sophomore Devyn Wheeler put up one the best performances in a five-set match in program history as UNF took down a strong North Dakota squad, 3-2. Wheeler put up a 21-kill, 11-block double-double to give her the second-highest block total for a five-set match in program history.

Wright’s first season also saw the return of one of the most diverse Ospreys to don the Navy and Gray. Redshirt-sophomore Gabby O’Connell finished with 320 kills and 325 digs as an outside, putting up 13 doubledoubles. She would go on to tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Ospreys took on a challenging non-conference schedule to open up the season, traveling to Wyoming, Knoxville, Tenn., and Boca Raton, Fla., for tournament play. UNF would play teams from the Mountain West, Summit League, Pac-12, SEC, Missouri Valley, Big South, SoCon and Conference - USA among others. UNF took a set from Tennessee who would finish with a 26 RPI, facing Colorado as the Buffaloes brought in a No. 15 ranking.

Prior to UNF:

Wright came to the Ospreys following a four-year stint leading the indoor and beach volleyball programs at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif (2014-17). She started both programs and led the Spartans to five conference championships and a state title in beach volleyball.

Joining MiraCosta in January of 2014, Wright quickly built a strong program with the indoor squad posting an 80-28 (74.1 win percentage) record. Under her tutelage, the Spartans produced one All-American, two all-state, three all-region, two conference players and a beach duo of the year award winners. She also collected a pair of conference coach of the year awards. Wright was named an AVCA Top 30 Coaches under Thirty Award winner in 2012.

Owning over a decade of head coaching experience, Wright was a championship winning coach in the high school ranks before going to MiraCosta. She led Tri-City Christian to eight consecutive CIF San Diego Section Championships, five So-Cal Regional Championships and a California State Championship runner-up finish. At Santa Fe Christian, she guided the team to a California State Championship, SoCal Regional Championship

MATT NOLAND ASSISTANT COACH (FIRST SEASON, 2ND OVERALL) MARANATHA BAPTIST (‘17)

Matt Noland joined the UNF volleyball coaching staff in July of 2021 as a volunteer assistant coach before being elevated to assistant coach April 4 of 2022. He added the role of recruiting coordinator prior to the 2023 season.

Noland first arrived at North Florida in July of 2021 as a volunteer assistant coach, a role he served in throughout UNF’s 25-8 fall 2021 campaign. The 2021 season saw North Florida set countless records, reaching the program’s first-ever postseason tournament beyond the ASUN Championship while earning a DI-era record for wins and RPI.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the volleyball staff at North Florida in this new role,” Noland said. “I’m excited to support the team as we continue the UNF tradition of excellence and community. I’m equally excited for the future of North Florida volleyball as we grow and pursue greater heights each day. I’d like to thank Coach Wright for the opportunity to work with this team in such a positive environment. I’d also like to thank Nick Morrow and Ervin Lewis for the privilege of working in such a supportive culture that the entire staff and UNF lives out daily.”

No stranger to being on the staff of teams during record-setting seasons, Noland was a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Pittsburgh coaching staff during the Panthers’ historic year in the spring of 2021. During his year at Pitt, the Panthers made the program’s first-ever Elite 8 while going 19-5. While in the Steel City, Noland sharpened his coaching skills through working with all-americans Kayla Lund, Chinaza Ndee and Chiamake Nwokolo.

At Pittsburgh, Noland aided in scouting reports, practice planning, team management and student-athlete development on and off the court. Noland served in a similar role with North Florida last year, combining to go 47-13 at the Division I level as a volunteer assistant coach.

Noland’s playing and coaching experience includes some of the most varied and enriching stops. A native of the snowy and remote Akalvik, Northwest Territories province in Canada, Noland played two years of volleyball at the international juniors level before traveling to the United States where he was a standout captain volleyball player at Maranatha Baptist University (MBU) in Watertown, Wis.

His impact at MBU could not be overstated. Noland helped take the Sabercats from a one-win program to a championship team in just a two-year span. Noland not only served as a student-athlete but handled a myriad of administrative duties at MBU.

At MBU, Noland earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degree while earning Wisconsin Volleyball Conference MVP honors and a conference title. The versatile player garnered time on the court under the tutelage of two-time AVCA NCCAA Coach of the Year, Regina DeLozier.

The Northwest Territories native made the jump to a US territory when he took over as the director of athletics at Harvest Christian Academy in MongMong-Toto-Maite, Guam. During that time he was also a member of the Guam Men’s National Indoor Volleyball Team from 2017-20. Noland also founded and coached the METGOT Volleyball Club while in Guam.

Noland’s time in Guam cultivated a skill set that stretched far beyond the game of volleyball as he took on the task of coordinating administrative elements of the school’s 13 teams. He was charged with leading a staff of coaches, fulltime and part-time employees and student staff across the department.

Brandon Row joined the Ospreys in February of 2023 after most recently serving in the same role at Cal State Bakersfield.

“I want to start by thanking Coach Wright for this incredible opportunity to join such an established program,” Row said. “After our first call, I knew there was something special happening at North Florida under her leadership. Her genuine care of people, high standard of culture and passion to win an ASUN Championship is at the forefront of what she represents as a head coach.”

At Cal State Bakersfield, Row was in charge of game planning for blocking schemes, something he garnered immense experience with at Georgia. In Athens with the Bulldogs, Row aided with the blockers and setters, helping UGA to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years and the first 20-win season since the late 90s.

Georgia achieved a top-15 win against Kentucky on the road, as well as a victory at No. 5 Florida, the first victory against UF since 2008.

“Through a thorough search and with patience we have found the right fit in Brandon and we are excited for him to join our staff,” head coach Kristen Wright said. “It was apparent through the process that Brandon would make excellent contributions immediately. It’s refreshing to have someone as eager as he is and with the work ethic he possesses. Row got his start in collegiate volleyball at Carson-Newman University, a Division II program in Knoxville, Tenn. He started out as a student manager before transitioning to his role as a graduate assistant. The Eagles advanced to the 2015 Elite Eight and also made the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Row earned his bachelor’s degree in K-8 education as well as his graduate degree in education curriculum, instruction and development.

ROB MANOSCA ASSISTANT COACH (SECOND SEASON) SUNY NEW PALTZ

Rob Manosca joined the North Florida volleyball staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2022 season, bringing with him decades of experience as a player and coach within the game of volleyball.

The Jacksonville, Fla., native brings in over a decade of experience coaching the game of volleyball, having stints at the Division II, club and junior college level as an assistant and head coach. Manosca and the Ospreys posted a 9-7 mark in league play during the fall 2022 season, bringing UNF to three-straight above .500 league records, the first such time in UNF’s DI era.

After earning his associate’s degree from the Florida State College of Jacksonville, Manosca had a standout career as a setter at the State University of New York - New Paltz. Manosca is tied for the program record for assists in five-set match with 73, while owning the four set and three-set single match record for helpers with 74 and 55 respectively. The successful setter is second in program history for assists in a season and assists in his career. He is just one of three student-athletes from SUNY New Paltz to eclipse 3,000-career assists.

A hot yoga enthusiast, Manosca also worked as the owner and one of the instructors at Bikram Yoga in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., for over 12 years.

I’m from Jacksonville. I grew up here, went to elementary and high school here and attended FSCJ.

What/Who is Your Greatest Inspiration

My biggest inspiration is my parents. Being immigrants here, they worked very hard to allow me and my siblings to have opportunities for a productive and better life.

Volleyball is my passion. Through my years of playing, I have had great coaches who impacted and helped me gain the knowledge to better understand the game. So, coaching volleyball is very rewarding and inspiring as I aim to impact and motivate student-athletes to reach their full potential.
