2017-18 NORTH FLORIDA BASKETBALL @OspreyMBB || @OspreyWBB
North Florida Men’s Head Coach MATTHEW DRISCOLL Head coach Matthew Driscoll has been putting his personal stamp on the UNF men’s basketball program since his arrival in the spring of 2009. With a contagious personality, boundless energy and a committed and organized plan for taking the Ospreys to new heights, Driscoll has guided the program to noticeable improvements both on and off the court. The 2016-17 season saw the Ospreys conclude the most successful four-year run in program history, collecting 76 victories and featuring UNF's second appearance in the ASUN Tournament Championship game in the last three years. Driscoll led the program to an 8-6 mark in conference play (15-19 overall), marking the fourth consecutive winning season in ASUN competition. Dallas Moore capped his career with a second straight ASUN Player of the Year honor while also becoming UNF's first 2,000-point scorer and the state of Florida's all-time leading scorer in Division I play. Freshman Wajid Aminu was named ASUN Freshman of the Year and joined on the All-Freshman squad by teammate Garrett Sams. His influence and building plan reached historic milestones in 2015-16 as North Florida captured back-to-back Atlantic Sun regular season titles and participated in a second straight national postseason tournament, hosting Florida in the opening round of the NIT. The Ospreys also recorded the most regular season wins (21) in program history and boasted a fourth straight winning record (10-4) in league play. Driscoll and his staff earned ASUN Coaching Staff of the Year while several players were honored by the league including Dallas Moore (Player of the Year/1st team All-ASUN), Demarcus Daniels (Defensive Player of the Year) and Beau Beech (1st team All-ASUN). In 2014-15, UNF captured the program's first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in history, after claiming the Atlantic Sun Tournament crown. The Ospreys finished the year with record win totals overall (23-12) and in conference play (12-2), while also ending the season ranked 20th in the CollegeInsider.com Top 25 Mid-Major poll. Driscoll and his staff earned the ASun Coaching Staff of the Year award and also shared the yearly honor for District 3 of the NABC. Dallas Moore was named to the NABC District 3 second-team, marking the second such honor in UNF program history. The championship squad featured a pair of first-team All-Atlantic Sun performers (Beau Beech, Moore) along with the Defensive Player of the Year (Demarcus Daniels). A trio of players garnered ASun All-Tournament honors led by Daniels, the MVP, and joined by Moore and Jalen Nesbitt. The Ospreys ranked among the nation's leaders in three-point shooting, earning the moniker of "Birds of Trey", and also enjoyed some other historic victories including a program first win over a Power 5 program (Purdue) and a second tournament title at the Cancun Challenge. In 2013-14, Driscoll led the Ospreys to a 16-16 overall record including a 10-8 mark in Atlantic Sun play with both win totals equalling then program records. UNF qualified for their fifth consecutive conference tournament while also posting a regular season sweep over league champion and NCAA Tournament participant Mercer. Freshman Dallas Moore earned the program's first A-Sun Freshman of the Year honor, while senior teammate Travis Wallace garnered second-team All-Atlantic Sun accolades. The team topped the 100-point mark in a game for the first time in the Division I Era and also bettered the program's four-season win total mark to 60 victories. The 2012-13 season marked the first set of Driscoll recruits to complete their careers. The group helped guide the Ospreys to a 13-19 overall record (8-10 A-Sun) and fourth consecutive appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. In addition, UNF compiled the most victories (57) in a four-year span in program history sending the senior class out as the winningest Osprey basketball group ever, before the group in 2013-14 topped the mark. Senior Parker Smith collected the program's first-ever All-Atlantic Sun Conference first-team honor while Beau Beech earned inclusion on the AllFreshman list. Smith and fellow senior Will Wilson both finished the season ranked among the Nation's Top 20 in several statistical categories. In 2011-12, Driscoll led the Ospreys to unprecedented heights as UNF finished with a then program record 16 victories including a 10-8 mark in A-Sun play. North Florida boasted a record high 11 home victories, highlighted by a perfect 5-0 mark against non-conference foes along with a program best six league home wins. UNF collected its first ever regular season sweep of rival Jacksonville and Lipscomb while also tallying sweeps of A-Sun foes FGCU and Kennesaw State. The Ospreys earned their best finish in league play tying for fourth. The team was honored by the league office five times during the season with Parker Smith named Player of the Week twice and Travis Wallace garnering Newcomer of the Week three times. Smith was also named the All-Atlantic Sun (2nd team) marking just the third postseason honor for UNF in its Division I history. Driscoll followed up his solid debut campaign at the helm of the Ospreys with even more historic success in his second season including an appearance in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship game. UNF’s run to the title contest was highlighted by victories over cross-town rival Jacksonville and an upset of second-seed ETSU. Under his tutelage, the 2010-11 Ospreys finished in sixth place in the Atlantic Sun (ahead of their preseason picks of 7th-9th) and posted a 15-19 overall record including a 10-10 mark in conference play. The 10 A-Sun wins marked a program best and the 15 overall victories were the most in North Florida’s Division I history and matched the then single season program high. Playing the toughest schedule in the ASun including seven non-conference games against teams with 20-plus victories and five nationally-ranked opponents, the Ospreys captured the title at the Cancun Challenge (Mayan Division) marking a second consecutive in-season tournament crown while also matching a program record with a five-game win streak late in the season.

Against A-Sun foes, Driscoll guided his 2010-11 group to more road wins (6) than the previous five seasons combined, while collecting program first victories at Mercer and Campbell. UNF also posted a record three regular season sweeps over league foes. The 2010-11 Ospreys collected more recognition from the A-Sun office earning four weekly honors including the program’s first weekly sweep on Jan. 25 with Andy Diaz (Player of Week) and Parker Smith (Newcomer of the Week) garnering the honors. Diaz and Jerron Granberry were both named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team, marking another first for the UNF program. Picked to finish last in the Atlantic Sun Conference's preseason polls in his inaugural season of 2009-10, Driscoll made an immediate impact leading UNF to a 13-18 overall record (8-12 in Atlantic Sun), a seventh-place finish and an ASun Tournament appearance in the program's first year of eligibility for the event. In addition, Driscoll led the Ospreys to a five-win improvement ending the year just two victories shy of the program record and posted the best debut season ever by a UNF men's basketball coach. His 2009-10 squad recorded more Division I conference wins and also collected five A-Sun road victories, eclipsing the one league road win earned over the previous four seasons. UNF also captured the tournament title at the Southern Mississippi Christmas Classic, becoming only the second Atlantic Sun team in league history to win a three-game, regularseason tournament. Driscoll's fan-friendly and excitable personality has not only energized the men's basketball team but also sparked a renewed interest from the Osprey fan base. UNF's attendance has been on the rise throughout Driscoll's tenure averaging more than 2,200 per game in each of the last three seasons, highlighted by the program record 2,856 per game average in 2015-16. Additionally, the team’s annual game versus rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena has eclipsed the 5,000 mark for attendance three times including a series record 5,807 set on Jan. 9, 2016. The fan buzz reached an all-time high for the 2015 Atlantic Sun Championship game drawing a conference and UNF Arena record crowd of 6,155. In 2009, Yahoo! Sports called Driscoll’s hiring at UNF a “Home Run.” In May of 2008, Driscoll was voted as one of the top-10 assistant coaches in the nation in a national survey of coaching professionals conducted and published by FoxSports.com. Driscoll came to UNF after spending six seasons as the top assistant at Baylor University. Along with BU head coach Scott Drew, Driscoll helped transform the Bears into Big XII contenders, leading them to the 2008-09 NIT finals and the 2007-08 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007-08 was Baylor’s first since 1988. Baylor came up one game shy of making a second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after falling in the final to Missouri at the 2009 Big XII Tournament. The Bears captured a win over top-seeded Kansas in that tournament before getting an invitation to the NIT. Baylor rode its hot streak all the way to the NIT finals at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The dream run included wins against Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Auburn and San Diego State, before falling to Penn State in the championship game. Driscoll spent seven weeks on Drew’s staff at Valparaiso before making the move to Baylor. Prior to his brief stop at Valparaiso, Driscoll served as an assistant at Clemson from 1998 to 2003 under Larry Shyatt, current University of Wyoming head coach and former University of Florida assistant. He also worked as an assistant during Shyatt’s first tenure at Wyoming for the 1997-98 season. Driscoll helped guide both Clemson and Wyoming to berths in the NIT, before assisting with the rebuild of the Baylor program. While at Clemson, Driscoll helped the Tigers to the 1999 NIT championship game. During the 1998-1999 campaign, the Tigers won 20 games, including four in the NIT, before losing to California by one point in the championship on the final possession. Driscoll also played a part in Clemson's three victories over North Carolina during a five-year period, including an upset over the top-ranked Tar Heels. At Wyoming, the Cowboys recorded a 19-9 mark and earned a berth in the NIT. Wyoming won two games against top 10 teams that year, including an upset of national finalist Utah. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native’s basketball coaching experience began in 1988 when he served as the head coach of his high school alma mater at Pittsburgh’s Northgate High School. He served in that role from 1988-90 before stops at Butler (Pa.) County Community College (1990-91) and Seneca Valley High School (1991-93), where he served as an assistant coach at both schools. From 1993-97 Driscoll served as the head coach at LaRoche College in Pittsburgh. Driscoll’s experience also includes a stint as a volunteer assistant coach at Slippery Rock. He also served as the president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Assistant Coaches Board of Directors, and has been a member of the organization since 1994, including a board member since 1998. For the past three seasons, Driscoll has been selected as a voter for the USA Today/NABC Coaches Top 25 Poll. Driscoll is a 1992 graduate of Slippery Rock, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He and his wife, Carrie, have two sons, Chase and Paxton.

So... just what is the
? e f i L P O #SWO
Just over 10 years into its journey as a Division I program, UNF Athletics has built a unique culture in the #SWOOPLife. So just exactly what is the #SWOOPLife? It’s winning championships and competing on the biggest stage in the NCAA, upholding the strong academic reputation of the University with a focus on graduation and making an impact in the Jacksonville community. #SWOOPLife is what makes the rise of the Ospreys so special. It’s not just one sport, one athlete or one day of service. It’s a commitment across the board from every coach and student-athlete to strive each day to win in the community, the classroom and on the playing field. Over the last two years, UNF has won 11 conference championships – highlighted by men’s basketball’s second straight title in 2016, two straight titles by women’s golf, men’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s tennis, with men’s cross country picking up its first Division I title in the fall of 2016. The team wins are special, but UNF also has gained several firsts thanks to significant individual achievements. Jack Findel-Hawkins became the first Division I All-America honoree in men’s tennis by advancing to the quarterfinals of the national championships this past spring. @UNFOspreys
Eden Meyer of the women’s track and field team showed her talent on the national stage, qualifying for the national championship in the 10,000 meters where she finished 15th to earn second team AllAmerica honors. Travis Trace became the first Osprey to advance to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships as an individual. Dallas Moore completed his career on the men’s basketball team by scoring more points than anyone else ever in Florida history with more than 2,400. These wins and performances don’t overshadow the tremendous success and achievement off the field. All 19 athletic teams at UNF have a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the second straight year. Topping that, the entire department GPA is a 3.34, the highest in program history. Add that to the passion for giving back to the community and serving as role models throughout Jacksonville to really understand the #SWOOPLife. Whether it’s reading to an elementary school class, taking a few minutes after a game or practice to sign autographs, or taking the time out to make an area of our great city better, the Ospreys are always soaring.

2017-18 NORTH FLORIDA BASKETBALL @OspreyMBB || @OspreyWBB
North Florida Women’s Head Coach DARRICK GIBBS Darrick Gibbs enters his third season at the helm of the North Florida Women’s Basketball program after being named the program's head coach in April of 2015. For the 2016-17 season, Gibbs saw his team grab 10 victories - a three-game improvement from his inaugural season. Under his direction, rookie Adrienne Jackson garnered ASUN All-Freshman Team honors after ranking fourth among freshmen in the league. She missed nine games in the season due to injury, but rehabbed backed to be one of the team's top reserves. He also developed transfer Tesh Hanson into the team's leading scorer and rebounder for the year. Hanson's best performance came with a 27-point, 12-rebound outing at USC Upstate in which North Florida won in Spartanburg for the first time since 2002. During his first year on the sidelines for the Ospreys, he saw the development of Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Year Claire Ioannidis. She averaged 15.1 points per game and matched the North Florida single-season record with 80 three-pointers made. Ioannidis was a twotime ASUN Newcomer of the Week under his watch, while also earning Player of the Week accolades after posting a season-high 29 points in his first win against UMKC (Nov. 13, 2015). Gibbs also developed Kadesia Johnson and Taru Madekivi as each improved their scoring averaging by more than five points. Under his guidance, Sierra Shepherd increased her scoring average by eight points and dished out a team-best 109 helpers. Gibbs, a coaching veteran with 17 years of experience in the collegiate ranks, took over the Ospreys after a 10-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Miami. During his decade at Miami, Gibbs helped guide the Hurricanes to six consecutive postseason appearances including four trips to the NCAA. He was a vital piece of Miami’s recent success with responsibility for player development along with handling scheduling. In addition, his recruiting efforts helped the 'Canes earn three Top 25 classes during his tenure. At UM, Gibbs recruited and mentored several players who have continued their playing careers professionally in the WNBA and overseas. Gibbs joined the UM coaching ranks prior to the 2005-06 season, and helped lead UM to a 17-13 record and an appearance at the 2006 WNIT in his first season with the Hurricanes. During his time at Miami, the squad captured the ACC Championship in 2011 and reached the WNIT Championship game in 2010. The Hurricanes posted 20 or more victories in five of the last six seasons including a 20-13 record this year highlighted by an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his arrival at UM, Gibbs served as an assistant coach for two seasons (2003-05) at Charlotte under current Miami head coach Katie Meier. While at Charlotte, Gibbs helped Meier lead the 49ers to two WNIT appearances, including Charlotte's first postseason victory with a 78-71 win over Clemson in the 2004 WNIT. The 49ers put together 39-23 record in those two seasons, including a 22-9 mark in 2004-05 to tie for the third-most single-season wins in Charlotte history. As one of the 49ers' main recruiting contacts, Gibbs played a major role in putting together their 33rd-ranked 2004 recruiting class during his first season at Charlotte. Gibbs joined the Charlotte coaching staff in 2003 following a two-year stay at the College of Charleston where he served as an assistant coach from 2001-03. Prior to his stint with the Cougars, Gibbs spent three seasons at Wofford College. As an undergraduate, he served as a student assistant with the Terriers from 1998-00, and remained with the team as an assistant during the 2000-01 season. Originally from Pawleys Island, S.C., Gibbs received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Wofford in 2000. Gibbs and his wife D'Erica were married in April of 2009 and have two daughters, Daisha and Desiree and a son, Darrick Jr.

North Florida vs. Jacksonville: The Rivalry Continues The River City Rumble, founded in fall 2005, is a season-long series between Jacksonville's two Division I institutions – University of North Florida and Jacksonville University. It was officially named and announced on Jan. 23, 2006, at a press conference on the North Florida campus. The University of North Florida and Jacksonville University battle annually for the "Old Wooden Barrel," which is awarded to the school with the most victories over the other during a school year. The "Old Wooden Barrel" will be housed in the winning school's athletic department until the conclusion of the final event of the following year. \\ How The River City Rumble Works // North Florida and Jacksonville both field teams in 14 sports (men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, sand volleyball, women's indoor/outdoor track and men's and women's golf). Each time the Ospreys and Dolphins face each other, the game will count toward the River City Rumble standings. The exception is individual sports (i.e. cross country, track and golf), where the team that finishes higher at the ASUN @UNFOspreys
Conference Championship will earn one win for its school. The two teams annually square off against each other 22 times. The school with the most wins receives the "Old Wooden Barrel" at the end of the year. Any tie in the standings keeps the trophy at the previous year's winner. UNF reclaimed the Barrel in 2016-17 keeping the trophy at the home of the Ospreys for the fifth time in the last six years.

IT STARTS WITH THE FUSE THAT THE GAME LIGHTS INSIDE US. PASSION IS EXCHANGED BETWEEN THE COURT AND THE STANDS. ENERGY BECOMES SYNERGY. OUR UNCOMMON DESIRE BECOMES OUR COMMON GROUND. BECAUSE THIS SEASON, IT'S ABOUT INTENSITY. IT'S DRIVEN BY INNOVATION THAT ELEVATES, THAT WILL RISE. AND SPEED TH THE GAME WILL BECOME FASTER, AND PRIDE WILL BURN HOTTER. IN ARENAS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, INTENSITY WILL INSPIRE COLLEGE FANS AND COLLEGE PLAYERS TO UNITE AS ONE.
