TO SOLVE GLOBAL PROBLEMS

You do not have to be a world leader–or even a billionaire– to make an impact. If we are going to turn things around, we all need to do our part to make it happen. Change starts with you. —Ted Turner

POSITIVE CHANGE FOR A BETTER WORLD WHO WE ARE

A Letter from Ted and Tim When disaster strikes, the world turns to one organization for hope, help, leadership, and coordination: the United Nations. When there is peace to keep between warring factions, the world asks the UN to mobilize peacekeepers, oversee elections, and create stability. In the face of challenges such as global warming, the UN provides the platform for international cooperation. The UN is the one international organization with the reach, scale, and vision capable of solving global problems. The United Nations Foundation links the UN’s work with others around the world, mobilizing the energy and expertise of business and non-governmental organizations to help the UN tackle issues including climate change, energy access, global health, peace and security, and poverty reduction.

One way the UN Foundation supports the UN is through innovative campaigns that are an entry point for the public sector and our partners to impact a specific issue. To date, our award-winning grassroots initiative Nothing But Nets has sent more than 7 million bed nets to African families to prevent malaria. In addition, our Girl Up campaign funds UN programs to provide the world’s hardest-to-reach girls with life-changing opportunities like the ability to go to school and stay safe from violence, and our recently launched Shot@Life campaign educates, connects, and empowers Americans to champion vaccines as one of the most cost-effective ways to save the lives of children in developing countries. We believe that catalyzing positive change on the critical issues facing the world requires engagement and commitment by all countries and all sectors. With each passing day, our world becomes more interconnected. The fates and future of humanity are linked as never before. We believe that it is not enough

to find solutions merely for today but we must force ourselves to think 1,000 years ahead and develop a long-term plan for humanity. International cooperation through the UN is no longer a wishful dream; it is both a reality and urgent necessity. The UN Foundation is honored to work with you and the United Nations to foster a more peaceful, prosperous and just world. Thank you for your commitment to helping the UN solve global problems. Sincerely,

TED TURNER Chairman of the Board

OUR MISSION The UN Foundation connects people, ideas, and resources to help the United Nations solve global problems. The Foundation was created in 1998 as a U.S. public charity by entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner and now is supported by global corporations, foundations, governments, and individuals. We help the UN take its best work and ideas to scale—through partnerships, advocacy, constituency building, and fundraising. because we have learned what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together through the United Nations;

ÃÃ partnerships

because the UN was created for “we the people,” and all of us can give back and contribute to a better world;

ÃÃ constituency building

because we need new and additional resources to power solutions to global challenges; and

ÃÃ fundraising

because we know the leverage and impact that sound policy can have on the kind of social, economic, and environmental change the UN seeks and the world needs.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR A MORE PEACEFUL, OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UN The UN Foundation is guided by the key priority of the UN: fostering international cooperation for a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world. We are honored to work closely with the UN’s effective leaders in the Secretariat and across the UN system. Our work supports these leaders and the priorities set by Member States. To ensure effective collaboration with the UN, we work with the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP) and the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP). UNFIP and UNOP are liaisons between our work and that of the UN system, acting as channels for our financial and other contributions to the UN system. Together, we work to foster new and innovative partnerships in support of UN causes.

PROSPEROUS, AND JUST WORLD CONTRIBUTING TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs) The UN Foundation is committed to helping advance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The MDGs focus on eradicating poverty, ensuring access to education, empowering women and girls, improving women and children’s health, combating disease, ensuring a sustainable environment, and developing global partnerships.

GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP

Significant progress has been achieved, even in the poorest countries, where UN programming is supported by adequate resources. But to fully realize the promise of the MDGs, good policies must be implemented at every level, and we need to build effective partnerships between the public and private sectors.

OUR FOCUS AREAS In consultation with our UN partners and the Board of Directors, we dedicate our work to the following issue areas:

THE UN AT WORK

& population

global health

women

We work closely with the UN to develop and expand major health initiatives to help families survive and thrive. Through our anchor partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and public-private partnerships with Rotary International, the American Red Cross, the United Methodist Church, and others, we help deliver life-saving vaccines and anti-malaria nets to children, stimulate a market for clean cookstoves that are safe and healthy for families and the environment, harness the latest mobile technologies to improve public health, and address the major health challenges facing the most vulnerable women and children around the world.

We believe that empowering women and girls with educational and economic opportunities and securing their health and human rights is one of the best investments we can make for families, communities, and the world. We work with the UN and our NGO, corporate, and government partners to promote gender equality; advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (including family planning); advocate for increased resources and funding for programs and activities benefitting adolescent girls; eliminate genderbased violence; combat climate change; and improve maternal health care using integrated health systems and mobile technology.

energy

& climate change

Energy is essential to economic development. Energy provides mobility, heat and light, and fuels the machinery that drives the global economy. But the world’s dependence on coal and oil harms public health and the environment, contributing to air pollution and climate change. We work with the UN to help move the world toward a safer, cleaner, more equitable and climate-friendly energy future. We imagine a world where sustainable energy powers a better future for everyone.

advocating for the un

The Better World Campaign and the United Nations Association of the United States of America advocate in support of a strong, effective and fully funded United Nations. As the single largest network of American supporters of the UN, we mobilize media to communicate UN efforts, build public support for UN causes, and help ensure the U.S. government pays its dues to the UN on time and in full. Why? Because a strong UN is the world’s most effective voice for international cooperation on behalf of peace, development, human rights and the environment.

Inspired by sports columnist Rick Reilly, hundreds of thousands of people have joined the campaign since it was created by the UN Foundation in 2006. Founding campaign partners include the National Basketball Association’s NBA Cares, The People of The United Methodist Church, and, Sports Illustrated. It only costs $10 to provide an insecticide-treated bed net that can prevent this deadly disease. To date, the campaign has raised $45 million and sent 7 million nets to families in Africa. is a global initiative led by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to mobilize action from all sectors of society – business, governments, investors, community groups and academia – to forge common cause in support of three interlinked objectives: ensure universal access to modern energy services; double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. These objectives are complementary. Progress in achieving one can help with progress toward the others. All are to be achieved by 2030, and all are necessary to achieve sustainable energy for all.

JOIN US As a dynamic partnership organization, we bring together a diverse set of stakeholders to help the UN solve global problems. Our corporate partnerships link the entrepreneurial spirit, innovative ideas, and expertise of the private sector with the social, economic, and environmental objectives of the United Nations. Our results-driven partnerships with governments, foundations, member organizations, faith communities, and individuals are critical to leveraging the impact of the UN’s work on issues ranging from global health and women’s rights, to peace and security. corporate partnership opportunities

Every day, more international companies recognize the value of strategically investing their resources in global causes. The UN Foundation’s many corporate partners provide the UN with critical technical expertise, strategic planning support, human resources, marketing platforms, products, and technologies to overcome some of the world’s most intractable problems. organizational partnership opportunities
