MEDIA INFORMATION The 2009 University of New Hampshire Football Media Guide was prepared by the University of New Hampshire Athletic Media Relations Office to assist all media in their coverage of Wildcat football and to provide pertinent information concerning the New Hampshire football program. Requests for additional information, interviews and photographs should be directed to Scott Stapin, Field House, Room 151, 145 Main Street, Durham, NH 03824, (603) 862-3906. GAME CREDENTIALS: Only accredited members of the media will receive credentials for any game. Requests for credentials should be made by 12 p.m. on the day prior to the game. No requests will be honored after that time. Credentials at Cowell Stadium may be picked up 90 minutes prior to kickoff at the Will Call table, located inside the indoor track. Credentials should be requested through Scott Stapin, Director of Athletic Media Relations. A valid form of identification is required in order to pick up media credentials. PHOTO AND FILM CREDENTIALS: All photo and game film credentials should be requested as early as possible, and no later than 12 p.m. on the day prior to the game. No photo credentials will be approved on the day of the game. Per NCAA regulations, photographers and video crews may only work the sidelines between the 25-yard line and the end zone in both directions. Photographers and film crews on the sidelines and end zones assume the responsibility for all risks. RADIO: Credentials for visiting radio will be limited to three persons unless prior arrangements have been made. Two visiting radio phone lines are provided by the University of New Hampshire Athletic Media Relations Office. There is a maximum of two free phone lines available to visiting commercial stations, and one phone line for a visiting student station assuming space in the press box is available. For additional information on reserving phone lines, please contact Scott Stapin at (603) 862-3906. PRESS PARKING: Reserved press parking is available in the press parking lot located in the A Lot parking area across the street from the fieldhouse. Your media pass also serves as a parking pass.

PRESS BOX GAME SERVICES: Pre-game notes and fact sheets, depth charts, current statistics, media guides, flip cards and programs will be available prior to the start of each New Hampshire home game. Halftime statistics, as well as complete playby-play, final team and individual statistics, will be provided to the media following the game. Wireless internet is available in the press box for your use. All media must sign on as a guest, inputting the corect information in the provided fields. Then just reboot your computer and you should be in the UNH system. INTERVIEWS: All requests for player or coach interviews, either in person or via phone or e-mail, must be arranged by the New Hampshire Athletic Media Relations Office and should be requested through Scott Stapin. Postgame interviews with both coaches and players will take place 10 minutes after the game in Field House Room 5, located a short distance from the press box. Postgame interviews will be coordinated by Scott Stapin at Cowell Stadium. On the road, Stapin will be available to arrange Wildcat interviews. The UNH lockerroom is closed to the media.

MEDIA INFORMATION University of New Hampshire Football On Radio The UNH athletic department has formed the “UNH Sports Network” which began in 1999 to provide radio coverage of UNH athletics. Veteran play-by-play announcer Jim Jeannotte (pictured on the right), who has been broadcasting Wildcat athletics since 1973, will continue to anchor the show. Handling the color analysis will be Mike Murphy (left). All 11 Wildcat contests will be broadcast live, with a pre-game show airing 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Wildcat Sports Properties has added WGIN-AM 930 (Rochester) and WQSO-FM (Portsmouth) 96.7 as flagship stations on the Wildcat Sports Network, joining WGIR-AM 610 (Manchester), which was added in 2008. All three stations are part of the Clear Channel family, and this change will go into effect at the beginning of the 2009-2010 athletic season. These three aforementioned stations – along with WUVR-AM 1490 (Lebanon), WNTK-FM 99.7 (New London), and WCNL-AM 1010 (Newport)– will carry the following: all UNH football broadcasts, men’s hockey broadcasts, football and men’s hockey weekly coaches’ shows, a select number of men’s basketball, women’s basketball and women’s hockey broadcasts, as well as “Wildcat Sports Today”, a three-minute daily update concerning UNH athletics.

Directions To Cowell Stadium

From the South: Take 95 North to 91 North (at New Haven, Conn.). Take 91 North to 84 East at Hartford. Follow 84 East through Connecticut to the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90). Stay on the Mass Pike for 10 miles before taking the exit for Auburn/Worcester and 290 East. Proceed east on 290 until it ends and merges with 495 North -- stay in the left lanes to exit to 495 North. Continue on 495 North -- it UNH football will be on television four times this season on Comcast will end and merge with 95 North. Proceed on 95 North into New Hampshire and SportsNet and Comcast Network thanks to the Colonial Athletic Association continue on to the toll booth. From the toll, go approximately seven miles to Exit 4 television package. UNH games on TV this year include the contest on Oct. for the Spaulding Turnpike (Route 4 West) -- signs that read “NH Lakes and White Mountains,” and “Dover/Concord.” Exit to the left. Go about four miles and take the 3 at Towson, Oct. 17 at Massachusetts, Nov 7 at home vs. Rhode Island and last exit before the toll (Exit 6W) for Concord and Durham. At this point, you are still Nov. 21 vs. Maine at Cowell Stadium. on Route 4 West. Go approximately four miles and continue straight through a traffic light (Madbury Road), and proceed another 1 1/2 miles to the Route 155A exit, marked “University of New Hampshire.” Take a left turn off the ramp and proceed one mile to Field House, which is on the right at the top of the hill.

Wildcat Football On Television

From Maine: Follow 95 South to Spaulding Turnpike (Route 4 West) and continue as above. From the West (Vermont, Concord): Take 89 South to 93 North. Follow 93 North, approximately four miles to 393 East, which will merge with Route 4 East. Follow Route 4 to Route 155A exit for “University of New Hampshire.” Make a right off the ramp and proceed as above. From the West (Manchester, Nashua): Take 93 North to Route 101 East. Follow 101 to Exit 6 (Route 125). Exit and take a left onto 125 and follow straight to Lee Traffic Circle. First right at circle is Route 4 East. Continue as above. For parking: Approximately one-quarter mile before reaching the Field House, make a left turn opposite tennis courts -- Green sign “Field House Parking” -- follow road and turn right at fork. Parking Lot “A” is one-quarter mile ahead on the left.

HEAD COACH SEAN McDONNELL Sean McDonnell begins his 11th season as the head coach of the University of New Hampshire football program with an impressive 70-49-0 record after leading the 2008 Wildcats to UNH’s fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA FCS Championships and fourth appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals during that same time span. Over the last five seasons, McDonnell has led his team to great success, posting an amazing 47-17 overall record. His team enters 2009 ranked as high as No. 6 in some national polls. McDonnell has returned UNH football to the upper echelon of the FCS and has recruited several All-Americans and NFL-caliber players, including the likes of Walter Payton Award-winning QB Ricky Santos and the all-time NCAA FCS record holder for TD catches in WR David Ball, who surpassed Jerry Rice’s college mark of 51 TDs with his 58. Ball has spent time with the Jets and Bears of the NFL. Last season, UNH continued to be a giant killer, as the team topped FBS team Army, giving McDonnell four straight FBS wins after also defeating Marshall, Rutgers and Northwestern as well in recent seasons. The squad finished the campaign with a 10-3 overall record, won the CAA North Division, and defeated Southern Illinois in the first round of the NCAA’s. UNH finished the season ranked No. 7 or No. 8 in most national polls. McDonnell was also honored as the New England Coach of the Year (FCS level) for the second time in his tenure at UNH. In 2007, the Wildcats were 7-5 overall and just narrowly missed defeating No. 1 Northern Iowa in the first round of the NCAA’s, losing on a last-minute TD, 38-35. The Wildcat offense once again averaged over 400 yards per contest. UNH finished ranked No. 16 in the nation. The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation in 2006 and finished the campaign ranked No. 6 as the ‘Cats defeated Hampton in the first round (41-38) to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals. In 2005, McDonnell was honored as the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year by the Sports Network, after leading his Wildcats to a record-breaking 11-2 season, an Atlantic 10 Championship title, and a second straight NCAA appearance in the I-AA quarterfinals. A 1978 graduate of UNH, McDonnell had his Wildcats ranked No 1 in the nation at the end of the 2005 regular season. In 2005 the Wildcats played two nationally-televised NCAA tournament games on ESPN at Cowell Stadium, as UNH defeated Colgate in the first round, but lost a hard-fought battle to Northern Iowa in the NCAA Quarterfinals. In 2004, his hard work rebuilding the program paid off in a 10-3 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference, which earned the team the Northern Division Championship title. UNH earned a bid to the NCAA I-AA Championships for the first time since 1994 and advanced to the quarterfinals, further than any other UNH team in the history of the program. UNH won its first ever NCAA contest under McDonnell, upsetting Georgia Southern in the first round by a 27-23 margin on national television. McDonnell was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year and was selected District Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). In 2003, UNH steadily improved as the season progressed and the Wildcats went on to win three of their last four contests, including an upset victory over top 25 squad, Maine. The team’s 5-7 record could have easily been above .500, as UNH narrowly lost to No. 1-ranked Delaware on a missed field goal in the closing seconds, and UNH was driving for the game-winning TD late in the Division I contest at Central Michigan, but ran out of time. In 2003, UNH posted impressive victories over the likes of top-ranked Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Richmond. The Minutemen were ranked 17th in the nation when the Wildcats defeated them by a 31-14 margin at Cowell Stadium. In 2002, McDonnell’s offense was one of the most prolific in I-AA football and averaged 449.2 yards per contest and 36.7 ppg. In the victories over the likes of Hampton, James Madison, Dartmouth and Massachusetts the ‘Cats scored 37 ppg. and scored over 40 points in two of the victories. UNH finished with a 4-7 overall record in 2001. In 2000, the Wildcats were ranked as high as 23rd in the nation and knocked off three top 25 opponents, including Hampton (31-17), Massachusetts (24-16) and a huge upset victory over No. 2 ranked Delaware on Nov. 4 (45-44 OT). Injuries squashed UNH’s chances for a playoff berth down the stretch, but UNH opened the campaign with a 4-0 record, its best start since 1977 when the Wildcats won seven straight games. UNH finished the season with a winning 6-5 record and finished tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 Football Conference. As a result of his outstanding coaching performance, McDonnell was named the Gridiron Club Of Greater Boston College Head Coach Of The Year. In his rookie debut, McDonnell led the Wildcats to a 5-6 overall record and impressive victories over the likes of Northeastern (33-31), Connecticut (43-18) and Maine (31-20). Under McDonnell and his staff, the Wildcats featured a crafty and wide open offensive attack that led the Atlantic 10 with an average of 457.3 yards per game. McDonnell, who served as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats for five seasons prior to being hired, was named the 19th head coach of the UNH football program on April 22, 1999. McDonnell replaced legendary head coach Bill Bowes, who retired after 27 years as the mentor of the Wildcats. McDonnell served eight seasons as a Wildcat assistant and completed his fifth in 1998 as the team’s offensive coordinator. McDonnell rejoined the Wildcats as an assistant coach before the 1991 spring camp, and in his first two seasons, McDonnell worked with the quarterbacks and receivers. In 1997, McDonnell was named the recipient of “The College Assistant Coach Award” by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston in recognition of his quality of performance, loyalty and longevity. A native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., McDonnell was a standout defensive back for UNH. He started for the 1975 and 1976 Yankee Conference championship teams and came back to start for the 1978 squad. After his graduation from UNH in 1978, he spent one year as an assistant coach at Manchester (N.H.) Memorial High School and followed that up with a three-year stint at Manchester West (1980-82). McDonnell worked as the defensive coordinator at Hamilton College for two seasons (1983-84) and subsequently spent three years (1985-87) coaching the receivers and tight ends at former conference-rival Boston University. During the 1988 campaign, McDonnell served as a graduate assistant coach at Boston C ollege. He spent two seasons as an assistant at Columbia (1989-90) prior to his coaching debut in Durham. Sean McGowan Defensive Coordinator/Secondary Fordham ‘98

Tim Cramsey, a former University of New Hampshire quarterback, enters his seventh season as a UNH assistant football coach. He enters his second season as quarterbacks coach after serving two seasons as the full-time running backs coach. He also mentored the tight ends and fullbacks in his first three years at UNH. During his stint with the UNH tight ends, Cramsey had the opportunity to work with All-American Jon Williams, who signed as a free agent with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams. Cramsey coached for two seasons at the high school level, one at Allentown Central Catholic and another at Emmaus High School, where he coached quarterbacks. A 1998 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Cramsey was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats for two seasons. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration.

Derek Sage Assistant Coach/Wide Receivers Cal State Northridge ‘02 Derek Sage enters his fifth season as the coach of the UNH wide receivers. He was instrumental in the development of All-American wide receiver David Ball, who went on to become the NCAA leader in TD receptions with 58 in his career, breaking the mark by Jerry Rice. He also worked with Keith LeVan, who is third on UNH’s all-time receiving yardage list. Sage came to UNH from Nevada, where he coached the defensive backfield in 2003 and the wide receivers in 2004. Under his tutelage, Hank Flowers was ranked sixth in the nation in receiving with 91 catches for 1,136 yards and six touchdowns. A native of Nevada, Sage played for Sacramento City College for two years and then transferred to Cal State Northridge, where he was a two-year letterman at tight end. A 2002 graduate of CSN, Sage earned a degree in Kinesiology and coached the 2002 season at Moorpark College (Calif.), working with the offensive line and tight ends. Moorpark was a bowl champion and won a conference title.

Joe Conlin Assistant Coach/Offensive Line Pittsburgh ‘02 Joe Conlin enters his sixth season as an assistant coach and his first coaching the offensive line. He was promoted to full-time status for 2008. Conlin ,who mentored the defensive line for four years, worked with Derek Stank, who developed into one of the Atlantic 10’s top defensive tackles and was named second-team All-Atlantic 10 as a senior under Conlin. He also worked with the safeties in 2008. Prior to his arrival in Durham, he coached the defensive line at West Virginia Tech from 2003-2004. He also gained valuable coaching experience at Greensburg Central Catholic High School from 2002-2003 working with the tight ends and defensive ends, while also handling strength and conditioning. A 2002 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Administration of Justice, Conlin was a three-time starting defensive tackle for the Panthers.

Sean McGowan enters his third season as the defensive coordinator, his sixth as an assistant coach, and returns to coaching the defensive backs, which he handled until 2006 for the ‘Cats. Last season was his second as mentor of the linebackers. McGowan, was instrumental in helping the Wildcat defense to lead the nation in fumble recoveries, interceptions and turnover margin in 2005. McGowan also was mentor to Jeff Pammer, who earned All-America honors. McGowan also worked closely with Buck Buchanan Award candidate Corey Graham, who was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft in 2007 by the Chicago Bears and could be a starter this season. McGowan, although he didn’t have the official title, served in a defensive coordinator capacity in 2006 under head coach Sean McDonnell. McGowan arrived in Durham after working at the University of New Haven before the school discontinued the football program. Prior to working at New Haven, McGowan spent the 2003 season as the defensive coordinator at West Virginia Tech. McGowan began his coaching career at Division III Occidental College, where he served as the quarterbacks coach. He then moved on to the University of Pittsburgh as a graduate assistant for three seasons. McGowan spent his first season in recruiting before moving to defense, where he worked with the secondary. McGowan then took over as defensive coordinator at Duquesne University, where the defense finished ranked first in total defense in I-AA. He was a two-year letterwinner as he started out as quarterback before moving to safety his final two seasons. He received his business degree from Fordham in 1998.

JON SHELTON Assistant Coach/Defensive Ends Maryland ‘97

Jon Shelton, a former defensive assistant coach at the University of Kansas, enters his fourth season with the University of New Hampshire football team’s defensive line. Shelton, who has 15 years of football coaching experience, coached and managed all aspects of the defensive line on game day and handled all of the day-to-day duties along with the rest of the Kansas defensive staff. While with the Jayhawks, Shelton coached a line that was ranked among the top squads in the nation. Shelton, who is responsible for coaching the defensive ends while with the Wildcats, brings with him a wealth of defensive experience from Bryant College, where he served as the defensive coordinator, assistant head coach and director of operations from 2002 through 2004. While with the Bulldogs, he was responsible for recruiting players from the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. areas. Shelton also gained experience while at Montgomery Community College in Rockville, Md. in 1997-98 as the assistant coach responsible for linebackers and kickers. At the University of Maryland, where he was a student assistant, Jon helped coach the defensive line from 1995 through 1997. Shelton began his coaching career at Montgomery Community College, where he was the defensive line coach from 1993 through 1995. Shelton most recently earned his Masters in Education (Counseling) at Providence College. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of Maryland at College Park and he has an Associates of Arts degree in Finance from Montgomery Community College.

COACHING STAFF Ryan carty Assistant Coach/Running Backs/Recruiting Delaware ‘06

Ryan Carty enters his third season as an assistant coach for the University of New Hampshire football team and will be in charge of the running backs for the second straight season, after mentoring the tight ends in 2007. Carty played quarterback and was a captain at the University of Delaware, and was on the roster of the 2003 national title squad. He gained valuable coaching experience as an assistant football coach at Somerville High School from 2002-2007. He also worked as a camp assistant coach for the Blue Hen Youth Football Camp in 2006 teaching young players basic quarterbacking skills.

Brian Barbato Assistant Coach/Tight Ends New Hampshire ‘04 Brian Barbato enters his second season as an assistant coach handling the tight ends. Barbato, who comes to UNH after serving as the outside linebackers and safeties coach under former UNH assistant coach Chris Phelps at St. Lawrence University, spent two seasons as a staff member with the Saints football squad. He gained valuable experience with the program, serving as assistant recruiting coordinator, assistant video coordinator, assistant academic coordinator and as assistant strength and conditioning coach. In 2004, Barbato mentored the UNH offensive line, working as the assistant offensive line coach. The Wildcats finished 10-3 that season, advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and had one of the top offenses in the nation in several key statistical categories. Barbato also gained football coaching experience at Exeter High School in 2005, where he was part of a team that posted a 10-2 season record and placed second in the running for the Division II New Hampshire state championship title. A 2004 graduate of UNH, Barbato was an outstanding offensive lineman for the Wildcats, earning second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2003 and third-team honors in 2002 as a 37-game starter who played all five lineman positions.

MICHAEL FERZOCO Assistant Coach/Outside Linebackers Kenyon College ‘04 Michael Ferzoco enters his second season as an assistant and came to UNH via Kenyon College, where he worked as an assistant coach since the 2004 season. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator and coached the quarterbacks and receivers during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. In 2007 his offense broke the school record for yardage with 460.2 yards per game and averaged 31.2 points per contest. His offense was also explosive in 2006, as the squad averaged 451.4 yards per game and posted 35.4 ppg., 12thbest in the nation. He also served as coach of the offensive line in 2005 and was the wide receivers coach in 2004. Ferzoco is a 2004 graduate of Kenyon, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

JAKE ZWEIG Assistant Coach/Defensive Tackles U.S. Naval Academy Jake Zweig comes to the University of New Hampshire with a wealth of experience and success and arrives in Durham after serving for a year as special teams coach at Iona. Prior to Iona, he spent two seasons as the defensive line and special teams coach at the Catholic University of America. His special teams earned top conference honors in both touchdowns scored and punt return yards. He was instrumental in recruiting the largest class in the history of Catholic football. In 2005, he joined the University of Maryland coaching staff as the graduate assistant working with the wide receivers coach. Zweig returned to college athletics following a successful career in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995 as a commissioned officer. He served as a surface warfare officer for two years onboard the U.S.S. Merrimack before reporting for Navy SEAL training at Basic Underwater Demolition School. Following his SEAL training, Zweig reported to SEAL Team 8 in Little Creek, Va. and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He has earned a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from the U.S. Naval Academy. His college athletic record includes playing nose guard for Coach George Chaump and varsity wrestling. A native of Steilacoom, Washington, he attended the Charles Wright Academy of Tacoma where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the 1989 state runner-up football team. He was also a State “A” wrestling champion and a member of the varsity golf team. He is married to the former Sarah Claud of Stony Creek, Va. They currently reside in Durham, N.H. MATT DAWSON Assistant Coach/Linebackers Massachusetts ‘01 Matt Dawson enters his first season as an assistant coach on the UNH staff, working with the linebackers. Dawson comes to UNH via Oregon, where he served as a defensive graduate assistant for two years after spending five seasons coaching in the 1-AA ranks, including the 2006 season at Fordham University, where he coached special teams and inside linebackers. Prior to Fordham, Dawson worked for three seasons at his alma mater, starting at Massachusetts in 2002 as a graduate assistant. In 2003, Dawson took over tight ends before a oneyear stint at Central Connecticut coaching linebackers and special teams. Dawson returned to the Minutemen in 2005 as the assistant defensive line and outside linebackers coach, helping lead the team to a 7-4 mark and second-place Atlantic 10 finish. Dawson served as a student assistant coach for the Minutemen during the 2000 season, helping UMass to a 7-4 record. Dawson earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from UMass in 2001. He lettered four times for the Minutemen from 1996-1999, serving as team captain during his senior season. A three-year starter at outside linebacker, Dawson helped UMass to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in 1998. MARK Deleone Football Operations Director Iowa ‘09 Mark DeLeone enters his first season as Football Operations Director. He came to UNH from the University of Iowa, where he served as a defensive student assistant for linebackers (‘07) and the defensive line (‘08). He also served as an off-the-field recruiting assistant for two years (2005-06) and worked at the Iowa Football Camps. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2009 at Iowa.

2009 SEASON PREVIEW The University of New Hampshire football team looks to extend its run of consecutive NCAA playoff appearances to six in 2009. The Wildcats finished the ‘08 season with a 10-3 overall record that included 6-2 in the CAA and their fourth advancement to the NCAA quarterfinals in the past five years. Last season, the Wildcats led the CAA in both yards per game (406.9 ypg) – including a league-high 621 total offensive yards vs. UMass – and red-zone efficiency (90%; 45 of 50 with 32 TDs and 13 FG). UNH scored 30+ points in nine of 13 games, including a seasonhigh 51 points against Rhode Island, to rank second in the league in scoring at 35.6 points per game. UNH could be that potent again in 2009 with the return of quarterback R.J. Toman, tight end Scott Sicko and running back Chad Kackert. Defensively, the ‘Cats ranked sixth in the league in points per game. They were stout against the run with a No. 4 ranking, and that run-stopping ability was the backbone of the second-ranked red-zone defense. The defensive line of Jordan Long, Kevin Peters, Steve Young and CAA Rookie of the Year Brian McNally returns intact, and four other starters return on the defensive side of the ball. The combination of a defense that created turnovers and an offense that didn’t fall prey to them led New Hampshire to a secondbest mark of +14 in turnover margin and a formula for success. QUARTERBACK: The Wildcats have four quarterbacks on the roster, but junior R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) is the only signal caller who has seen game action. Toman ranked second in the league in both passing yards (239.2 per game) and pass efficiency (156.2) in 2008 to earn CAA Second Team recognition. Toman completed 65.1 percent of his pass attempts (231 of 355) for 3,110 yards and 28 touchdowns. The yardage ranks fourth on UNH’s list of single-season superlatives and only his predecessor, Ricky Santos, is ahead of Toman on that list. His 231 completions are No. 8 on the program’s single-season list and the 355 attempts are ninth. Toman’s season highlights included a pair of 300-yard passing games (309 at Rhode Island; 305 vs. William & Mary) as well as a 295yard, four-TD performance against UMass in which he averaged 16.4 yards per attempt and 29.5 yards per completion, both of which ranked second in the league for 2008 single-game efforts. In addition to the aerial attack, Toman carried the ball 106 times – second most on the team – for 214 yards and six touchdowns, which tied for second among all Wildcats. In that battle vs. UMass, Toman rushed five times for 61 yards and one score. Redshirt freshman Matt Welch (Lowell, Mass.) is projected as the backup QB. Classmate Josh Vick (Appolo, Pa.) and junior Mike Roberto (Rumsin, N.H.) will be competing for that spot. RUNNING BACK: Senior Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) is a versatile weapon out of the backfield. Despite missing four games in ‘08, Kackert ranked second on the team in carries (99), rushing yards (630) and rushing touchdowns (six). And with his explosive speed, Kackert led the team at 6.4 yards per carry. His 72-yard run at Rhode Island was the second-longest

in the CAA last year. Kackert finished that game with 310 all-purpose yards, which also ranked second in the league. He finished the season with a pair of 100-yard rushing games – 164 at URI and 106 vs. Albany. Kackert also stretches defenses with his pass receiving skills. He tallied 15 catches for 176 yards – an 11.7 average per catch – and two touchdowns. When you add his 441 kickoff return yards, Kackert amassed a total of 1,247 all-purpose yards to average a team-high 138.6 yards per game. Junior Sean Jellison (Amherst, N.H.) gives UNH a proven second option at running back. In 10 games, he carried the ball 43 times for 223 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and scored two rushing touchdowns. Jellison also caught two of Toman’s 28 touchdown passes; he totaled

63 receiving yards on eight receptions. Kenneth Howard (Plainfield, N.J.) and Shawn Sweeney (Plymouth, N.H.) both redshirted the 2008 season. WIDE RECEIVER: UNH will have a new leading receiver for the fourth consecutive year in 2009 following the graduation of Mike Boyle (67 catches; 1,116 yards; 10 TD). Senior Travis Negron (San Diego, Calif.) is the top returning wide receiver. In 11 games, he had 17 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown. Junior J.T. Wright (Agoura Hills, Calif.) recorded 75 receiving yards on seven catches to average 10.7 yards per catch in 10 games played. Joining that duo in the starting lineup is junior Kevon Mason (Quincy, Mass.), who finished with six catches for 55 yards in six games. Sophomore Mickey Mangieri (Bedford, N.Y.) saw action in eight games and pulled in one reception for nine yards. Juniors Chris

2009 SEASON PREVIEW Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) and Mike Greene (Stonington, Conn.) are two other weapons at UNH’s disposal. Chandler battled through injuries for the second consecutive year in ‘08, while Greene did play in seven games a year ago. Tight end: New Hampshire boasts a highly talented group of tight ends. Senior Scott Sicko (Stillwater, N.Y.) has been the secondleading receiver each of the past two seasons. He was named to the All-America First Team by three affiliations – Associated Press, Walter Camp and College Sporting News – and was also named to The Sports Network All-America Second Team. Sicko’s other 2008 accolades included CAA First Team and ECAC All-Star. Sicko recorded 50 catches for 660 yards and seven touchdowns to rank second on the team in all three statistics. He was seventh in the league in receiving yards/game at 55.0. With those 660 receiving yards, Sicko ranked fifth on the team in all-purpose yards and average yards per game. Sophomore Chris Jeannot (Moon Township, Pa.) and junior Kamal Mohamed (San Diego, Calif.) also bring experience at tight end. Jeannot caught just five passes in nine games, but at a teamhigh 27.4 yards per catch he totaled 137 receiving yards. His 46 yards/catch (2-92) against UMass was the second-highest average in the CAA a year ago. Mohamed also played in nine games and had one catch (two yards). OFFENSIVE LINE: New Hampshire will have a totally revamped offensive line in ‘09 after losing four members to graduation. Senior center Tom Neill (Syracuse, N.Y.; 6-foot-4, 285 pounds) is the leader of this year’s group that will battle in the trenches, as he is the only returning starter on the O-line. Classmate Dan Larkin (Rochelle Park, N.J.; 6-4, 300) also has considerable experience and is the projected starter at right guard. Seth Price (Grove City, Ohio; 6-6, 280), a junior, is a converted tight end and has the starting nod at left tackle. Beyond those seniors, the offensive line has young talent.

• Senior tight end Scott Sicko enters this season as an All-American and has been named a pre-season All-American by most national magazines and web sites that provide teams for 2009.

Sophomores Jayson Elmore (Hershey, Pa.; 6-3, 260) and George Pecoraro (Cresskill, N.J.; 6-4, 270) ended the 2008 season second on the depth chart, and through the year they saw game action that will prepare them for this year’s starting role. Elmore will line up alongside Larkin on the right side while Pecoraro will flank Neill to the left. This year’s starting five is taller than last year’s group with an average height of 6-4.2 in comparison to 6-3.6, but is also considerably lighter at an average weight of 279 as opposed to 297. Redshirt freshmen Isaiah Martin (Pennsauken, N.J.; 6-2, 285) and Chris Zarkoskie (West Caldwell, N.J.; 6-2, 290) are listed second on the two deep at right guard and center, respectively. DEFENSIVE LINE: The defensive line returns intact from the ‘08 season with Jordan Long (Springfield, Mass.) and Steve Young (Rochester, N.H.) at the tackles and Kevin Peters (Pleasantville, Pa.) and Brian McNally (Cornwall, N.Y.) on the ends. Long and Peters – both seniors – tied for second among D-linemen in tackles with 43 apiece. Peters (22 solo, 21 assisted) ranked third overall in tackles for a loss (7.5). He also had two sacks and three pass breakups. Long (14 solo, 29 assisted) finished with three tackles for a loss and one sack. Young, a junior, had 5.5 tackles for a loss as part of his 35 overall tackles (17 solo, 18 assisted). McNally, the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year last season, led all UNH defensive linemen in tackles with 55 (21 solo, 34 assisted). He recorded team highs in both tackles for a loss (8.5) and sacks (2.5). McNally was also credited with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The reserves also have significant game experience. 2009 SEASON PREVIEW Maroney (Brockport, N.Y.) and junior Lance Mailloux (Bedford, N.H.) were second on the depth chart at the end of the 2008 season. Dan Ruhl (Sanibel Island, Fla.) is another viable option at defensive end for the ‘Cats. Maroney saw action in nine games and recorded 22 tackles (14-8-22). Mailloux tallied 19 tackles (6-13-19), including 1.5 sacks, in 12 games. Ruhl, a senior, played in eight games and tallied a total of 12 tackles (7-5-12) with one sack.

fumbles, recovered two fumbles, had an interception and three pass breakups. Senior Terrence Klein (Westwood, N.J.) is another converted defensive back now playing outside linebacker. He ended last year second on the depth chart and is projected as a starter in ‘09. Klein finished behind Souza on the tackles leaderboard with 59 (31 solo, 28 assisted), including two for a loss. He ranked third on the team in interceptions with four and also had four pass breakups. Devon Jackson (Williamstown, N.J.), who will be stepping into a starting role this year as a junior, compiled 33 solo tackles and 25 assisted tackles for a total of 58. Included in those numbers were two tackles for a loss and one sack. Jackson also tallied one interception, one fumble recovery and four pass breakups. Junior Mike Perkins (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomore John Duffey (Tarentum, Pa.) ended the ‘08 season second on two deep and begin 2009 in the same position. Perkins played in 10 games and was credited with 17 tackles (9-8-17); his other stats included two tackles for a loss and one interception. Duffey made nine tackles (5-4-9) in as many games last year. Juniors Jamie Cosgrove (Sharon, Mass.) and Bryan Mayhew (Plymouth, N.H.) have climbed to second on the depth chart. In six games, Cosgrove was credited with one tackle. Mayhew appeared in four games and totaled five tackles (4-1-5). James Jenkins (Patterson, N.J.) and Mark Petercuskie (Holliston, Mass.) – both sophomores – saw limited action last season. Jenkins played in four games and finished with nine tackles (3-6-9), including one sack. Petercuskie had eight tackles (4-4-8) in three games. DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD: The defensive backfield is anchored on the corners by senior Ryan Hinds (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Dino Vasso (Crum Lynne, Pa.).

Sophomore John Murray (Aston, Pa.) is expected to see more playing time this season, as he is now listed as a backup on the depth chart at defensive tackle. In six games last year, Murray was credited with nine tackles (three solo, six assisted). LINEBACKERS: The linebacking corps boasts a wealth of experience and depth. Six of the top eight tacklers in ‘08 were linebackers, and four of the top five top returners in that statistic are from that group of linebackers. Senior Sean Ware (Bristol, Conn.) returned from knee injury in 2008 and excelled as a ball stopper. He ranked third on the team in total tackles with 88, and that included 44 solo tackles; he was second in tackles for a loss with 8.0. In the CAA, his 6.8 tackles per game ranked 18th overall and 11th among linebackers. Ware was also credited with one interception, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. Junior Hugo Souza (Marshfield, Mass.) converted from strong safety to outside linebacker in ‘08 and made the transition effortlessly. He totaled 66 tackles (39 solo, 27 assisted), which ranked fifth on the team, with 5.5 for a loss and one sack. Souza also forced three 2009 New Hampshire Football • 10 •

2009 SEASON PREVIEW Junior Anthony Gorrell (Clayton, N.J.) did not see game action last year, but did tally 4-5-9 in five games in ‘07. Rod Walker (Portsmouth, N.H.) appeared in three games in ‘08 and finished with 1-2-3.

Vasso was an All-America Honorable Mention selection by College Sporting News and also garnered CAA Second Team recognition in 2008, when he ranked 10th in the league – third among CAA defensive backs – in tackles (7.6 per game). Vasso led UNH in total tackles with 99, and that included 66 solo tackles; in comparison only four teammates recorded as many as 66 total tackles. He tied for the team lead in interceptions (five) and also was credited with six pass breakups, which tied for second. Furthermore, Vasso forced a pair of fumbles, and that number also tied for second best on the team. Hinds, a second-round pick in the 2009 CFL draft, lines up at the other corner. He tied Vasso’s mark of five interceptions, which ranked third in the CAA, and led UNH with eight pass breakups. Hinds had a league-high 218 interception return yards and also had a forced fumble. He tallied 36 solo tackles and 17 assisted for a total of 53. Sophomore Ryan McGuinness (Howell, N.J.) will step into the starting role at free safety. He ended last year second on the depth chart and recorded 38 tackles (10-28-38) in 12 games. Kyle Flemings (Forty Fort, Pa.), another sophomore, returns to the 2009 depth chart where he ended in 2008 – behind Hinds at cornerback. Flemings appeared in nine games and totaled eight tackles (6-2-8) as well as a pass breakup. Sophomore John Greer (Buffalo, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Tyler Sargent (Fairview, Pa.) have climbed to second on the two deep. Greer played in 10 games a year ago and was credited with 21 total tackles (14 solo, seven assisted).

SPECIAL TEAMS: New Hampshire’s special teams will feature a lot of new faces, but welcomes back some familiar ones as well. Chad Kackert led the team in kickoff returns for the second consecutive year in 2008. He averaged 24.5 yards on 18 attempts for a team high of 441 kickoff return yards. He will be flanked by Tyler Sargent, who is also second on the depth chart at cornerback as a redshirt freshman. Senior Tom Manning (Rome, N.Y.) will reprise his role as placekicker in ‘09. As the team’s primary kicker in 2006 and 2007, Manning made 12 of 20 field goal attempts and 87 of 91 PATs. Last year, he was 4-for-7 in field goals and converted 19 of 20 PATs. Redshirt freshman A.J. DeLago (Menands, N.Y.) is projected as the backup. Senior wide receiver J.T. Wright has the inside track as the starting punter. Junior Ryan Glasgow (Bedford, N.H.) is second on the depth chart. He had two punts for a total of 83 yards (41.5 average) – with a long of 48 yards – last season. The punters will be catching snaps from senior Dan Ruhl, a defensive end who was the secondary long snapper a year ago but is the primary man for the job this season. When UNH forces the opposition to punt, the Wildcats will send junior Dino Vasso as the return specialist. With 113 return yards on five interceptions a year ago, Vasso exhibited the ability to elude tacklers and make big plays. Ryan McGuinness will occasionally spell Vasso.
