THE UNH WALK-ONS WILDCAT WALK-ON SUCCESS STORIES

Walk-ons have played a major role in the success of the Wildcat football program over the years and many have climbed to the top, whether they were team captains, named all-conference, players of the year or even chosen to play in the NFL. One even became UNH’s 18th head coach (Sean McDonnell). and another in wide receiver David Ball broke Jerry Rice’s collegiate TD reception record with 58 in his career.

WEST POINT, N.Y.— UNH rushed for two TDS, scored on a fumble return and had a kickoff return for a TD as the Wildcats posted a 28-10 victory over Army at Michie Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It marked UNH’s fourth consecutive victory over an FBS school in five years. The Wildcats also defeated Rutgers in 2004 (35-24), Northwestern in 2006 (3417) and last year defeated Marshall (48-35). The Black Knights, who fell to 0-2 on the season, opened the scoring at 2:35 of the first quarter on a 2-yard pass play to Mike Evans from quarterback Carson Williams to make it 7-0 after the PAT. The touchdown was setup by a 56-yard pass play to Jameson Carter from Williams. The drive was six plays for 77 yards (3:19). However, on the ensuing kickoff, senior John Clements (Hammonton, N.J.) returned the football 87 yards with 2:19 to play in the first quarter. The extra point was good by senior Tom Bishop (Newfield, N.Y.) and the game was quickly tied at seven apiece. It was the first kick return for a touchdown for Clements and also the longest of his career. Last season Clements returned four kicks for 94 yards including his previous best of 57 yards. Army fumbled the football at 11:55 of the second and it was recovered by sophomore defensive lineman Lance Mailloux (Bedford, N.H.). The offense took over on UNH’s 26 yard line with 11:35 to go in the first half. UNH then drove down the field and scored on a 23-yard run by junior running back Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) and the Wildcats took a 14-7 lead on an eight-play, 79 yard drive (3:00). Army closed the gap with 25 seconds remaining before the half when Matt Campbell booted a 42 yard field goal to close to within four points to make it 14-10 as UNH took a knee and went to its lockerroom with the lead. UNH opened the third quarter with a well-engineered, nine-play, 66-yard drive, capped off by a five yard run by senior wide receiver Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) at 11:19 to give UNH the 21-10 lead following the PAT by Bishop. The drive, which mixed the run and the pass, used up 3:34 off the clock and gave UNH the lead it would not relinquish.

KINGSTON, R.I.— Sophomore quarterback RJ. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) threw five TD passes and junior running back Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) ran for a career-best 164 yards to lead the 10th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team to a 51-43 victory at the University of Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon. Toman completed 29 of 40 passes for a career-best 309 yards and Kackert finished with 310 all-purpose yards and one 72 yard rushing touchdown. In addition to Toman and Kackert, Boyle made nine catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead all UNH receivers. Leading the defense in tackles was Vasso with nine tackles (7 solo) to go with his intereception.

DURHAM, N.H. – R.J.Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.), the reigning Boston Globe Gold Helmet Award winner, passed for 255 yards and four touchdowns to lead the 10th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon’s 32-24 non-conference victory against the University at Albany at Cowell Stadium. UNH is now 3-0 and has opened the season with three consecutive wins for the third time in the last four years, and the Wildcats have won four straight home openers. Albany, which has played a CAA opponent in all three games this season, is 1-2. New Hampshire’s receiving corps was led by Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.; seven receptions, 79 yards, one TD) and Scott Sicko (Stillwater, N.Y.; five catches, 104 yards, two TDs). Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) carried the ball 16 times for 106 yards and also had four receptions for 53 yards. Albany was led offensively by Vinny Esposito, who completed 21 of 31 attempts for 283 yards and one TD, and David McCarty with 130 rushing yards on 39 carries. Trailing 17-7 late in the second quarter, UNH scored 16 points in 4 minutes, 18 seconds to take a 23-17 lead. New Hampshire’s defense forced Albany to a three-and-out to start the third quarter, and an errant long snap on the punt play gave the ‘Cats possession on the Great Danes’ 24 yardline. On the ensuing play, Toman lofted a pass to the back-left corner of the end zone to Sicko and another Manning PAT gave UNH its second lead of the game, 21-17, at 13:04. Kackert and Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) alternated carries and Simpson’s seven-yard gain on 3rd-and-7 advanced the ball to the Albany 30 and secured the win, as the visitors had just one timeout remaining with 1:15 on the clock.

HANOVER, N.H.— Sophomore running back Sean Jellison (Amherst, N.H.) ran for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to lead the University of New Hampshire to a 42-6 Granite Bowl victory at Dartmouth College on Saturday at Memorial Field. The No.7 Wildcats remain undefeated with a 4-0 record, while the Big Green falls to 0-2 overall. Jellison gave the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead at 8:28 of the first quarter with a 4 yard touchdown run that capped off a six-play, 50 yard drive. The PAT was kicked by junior kicker Tom Manning (Rome, N.Y.). Jellison struck again with 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter when he broke two Dartmouth tackles, spun left and ran 16 yards for the touchdown. After the PAT the Wildcats held a 14-0 advantage. The defense got its first turnover of the contest midway through the second quarter when junior Terrence Klein (Westwood, N.J.) intercepted an Alex Jenny pass and gave UNH the ball on the Wildcat’s 37 yard line. As a direct result of the interception, junior wide receiver Travis Negron (San Diego, Calif.) ran in UNH’s third touchdown of the afternoon from the 6 yard line and after the PAT by Manning the Wildcats held a 21-0 lead at 6:41 of the second quarter. The Wildcats got their fourth straight rushing touchdown of the first half on a 4 yard run by sophomore quarterback R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.). The Manning PAT went through the uprights once again and UNH held a commanding 28-0 lead. Dartmouth made one last attempt to score a the end of the first half, but an interception by redshirt freshman free safety Ryan McGuinness (Howell, N.J.) gave UNH the ball at its own 22 yard line. However, UNH was unable to get close enough for a field goal before the intermission. The UNH defense,which held the Big Green scoreless in the first half, gave up just 92 yards of offense in the first half, while the ‘Cats moved the ball 310 yards, 132 on the ground and 178 yards in the air.

DURHAM, N.H. – Jake Phillips’ 17-yard touchdown pass to D.J. McAulay with 22 seconds remaining lifted the William & Mary football team to Saturday afternoon’s 38-34 victory against fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire in front 13,255 Homecoming Day fans at UNH’s Cowell Stadium. UNH fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the CAA while the Tribe improved to 3-2, 1-1. Trailing 34-31, W&M began the game-winning drive at its 28 yard-line with 4:34 on the clock. On 3rd-and-11, a Hugo Souza (Marshfield, Mass.) interception was negated by a roughing the passer infraction against the Wildcats that gave the Tribe 1st-and-10 at the 42. The visitors converted two more 3rd-and-long situations to advance the ball to the UNH 36. Three plays later, on 1st and 10 from the 17, Phillips eluded the pass rush, stepped up to the line of scrimmage and lofted a pass complete to McAulay at the left pylon for the touchdown. Brian Pate’s PAT made the score 38-34. UNH’s Terrance Fox (Piscataway, N.J.) returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards to the UNH 45. After an illegal substitution call against New Hampshire, Wildcats’ quarterback R.J. Toman rolled to the right and his pass down the sideline was intercepted by Fred Johnson at the W&M 30. Phillips took a knee to elapse the last four seconds. Toman finished 27 of 36 for 305 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was UNH’s leading rusher with 55 yards on 14 carries, and that included TD runs of two and three yards. BROOKLINE, MASS. – The University of New Hampshire football team came back from a 21-6 halftime deficit by scoring 27 unanswered points to defeat Northeastern University (33-21) at Parsons Field on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats took their first lead of the contest, and the lead for good, when junior tight end Scott Sicko (Stillwater, N.Y.) caught a 16 yard pass from sophomore quarterback R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to make the score 26-21 with 13:47 remaining in the contest. The clincher came with 49 seconds remaining when senior running back Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) ran it in from 2 yards out. The PAT by Bishop was good and UNH drove back to Durham with the 33-21victory. UNH improves to 5-1, 2-1 CAA, while NU falls to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in conference play. Northeastern took the opening drive 65 yards down the field quickly and scored on a 1 yd TD plunge by Alex Broomfield to give the Huskies the early 7-0 lead following the PAT by Mat Johnson. The victory marked the 500th in the history of the UNH football program, which dates back to 1893. UNH, which has won all five meetings in the series vs. Towson, improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. Towson is now 3-5, 1-3. Terrance Fox (Piscataway, N.J.) caught four passes for 103 yards, including a 40-yard TD reception. Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) had three catches, two for TD’s, for 63 yards. Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) ran for a team-best 85 yards including tying his career-high 68-yard touchdown run, which he also posted in 2005 vs. Towson. Defensively, Ryan Hinds (Toronto, Ontario) had a pair of interceptions including a 74-yard return touchdown for the game’s first tally, while Ryan McGuinness (Howell, N.J.) recorded a team-best 13 tackles. The Wildcats scored 28 points in a span of 10:34 in the second quarter to break a 7-7 tie and take a commanding 35-7 lead into halftime. The outburst began with a 48-yard strike from Toman over the top of the defense to Boyle in the end zone at 11:09. Simpson’s 68-yard end-around to the left side extended the UNH lead to 21-7 at 7:08. The ‘Cats then marched 48 yards in six plays and took a 28-7 lead at 2:18 on a 12-yard pass play in which Toman rolled to the left and found Boyle in the end zone. DURHAM, N.H. – The defense forced seven turnovers, including two interception returns for touchdowns by John Clements and Dino Vasso, to propel the ninth-ranked University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon’s 45-25 victory against Hofstra University in CAA action at Cowell Stadium. UNH, which compiled 207 interception return yards, won its third consecutive game to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the CAA while Hofstra lost for the third time in as many weeks to fall to 3-6, 1-4. Hofstra capitalized on a UNH fumble – caused and recovered by the Pride’s Luke Bonus – to set up a 45-yard field goal by Roger Williams to take a 3-0 lead at 12:46 of the first quarter. On the visitor’s next possession, a bad exchange by The Pride offense put the ball on the ground and UNH’s John Clements (Hammonton, N.J.) recovered at the HU 38-yard line. The Wildcats did not take advantage, however, as junior running back Sean Jellison (Amherst, N.H.) was short of a first down on a 4th-and-3 play from the HU 31. A Hugo Souza (Marshfield, Mass.) interception gave the Wildcats 1st-and-10 at the HU 19, but the Pride defense turned aside the threat on 3rd-and-goal from the 1-yard line on a Leslie Jackman interception at the goal line. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.), at 11:09 to make it 14-3 UNH. However, Hofstra struck again at 5:55 of the second stanza on a 10 yard pass play from freshman Steve Probst to Everette Benjamin and the UNH lead was cut to 14-9 after the PAT.
