VILLANOVA, PA.--Wide receiver Phil Atkinson scored with 8:56 to play on a 17-yard run after a long pitch by quarterback Chris Whitney to lead No. 6 Villanova to a 24-13 victory over the University of New Hampshire on Saturday. UNH sophomore quarterback R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) completed 18 of 28 passes for 264 yards and no interceptions and senior wide receiver Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) had five catches for 101 yards on the day to lead the ‘Cats. Leading UNH in rushing was senior running back Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) with 12 carries for 53 yards and one TD. The UNH defense continued to create turnovers for the third straight week as junior linebacker Sean Ware (Bristol, Conn.) picked off a pass by Chris Whitney and returned the ball 26 yards to the Villanova 34 yard line. On the ensuing drive, senior running back Simpson ran the ball in three yards for the touchdown at 4:18 of the first quarter to give UNH a 7-0 lead following the PAT by senior placekicker/punter Tom Bishop (Newfield, N.Y.). Also playing well during the drive was junior running back Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) who was making a return from a shoulder injury. Villanova answered in its first drive of the second quarter when quarterback Antwon Young ran it in from three yards out with 12:28 to play in the first half. After the PAT the contest was tied 7-7. UNH drove the ball to the 19 yard line to set up a 36 yard field goal by Bishop that gave UNH a 10-7 advantage with 9:31 left in the second quarter. The field capped an 8-play, 53-yard drive that took 2:57 off the clock. Villanova took the lead at 5:17 of the second quarter on a 5 yard pass play from Young to wide receiver Brandyn Harvey and Villanova took a four-point lead, 14-10. The TD pass capped an impressive 9-play 69 yard drive using 4:06 off the clock and that was the score as both teams headed into their respective lockerrooms at the half. UNH opened up the third quarter with a long, sustained drive of 14 plays for 68 yards (8:07 TOP) that featured several good runs by Simpson and Kackert and tremendous 21 yard reception by sophomore Terrance Fox (Piscataway, N.J.). Bishop then booted a 23-yard field goal, his second of the day, to cut the Villanova lead to one, 14-13 with 6:53 to play in the third quarter.

DURHAM, N.H. – Matt Parent (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded six tackles, two fumble recoveries and a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown to lead the 13th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon’s 52-21 CAA victory against 22nd-ranked University of Massachusetts on Senior Day at Cowell Stadium. UNH improves to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the CAA while UMass is now 6-5, 3-4. Parent was named the recipient of the 23rd Annual Bill Knight Award, which is presented to the most outstanding player in the game between these programs. He is the third defensive player to earn the award. The Wildcats’ defense forced six turnovers and five three-and-outs in 15 Minutemen possessions. UNH’s balanced offense amassed 326 rushing yards and 295 passing yards for a total of 621 yards. R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) completed 10 of 18 attempts for 295 yards and four touchdowns; he also had a 43-yard rushing TD and 61 yards on the ground. Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) had four receptions for 147 yards and one TD, and he also had two carries for 42 yards. Chris Jeannot (Moon Township, Pa.) caught two passes – both for scores – for 92 yards. Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) was UNH’s top rusher with 125 yards on 23 carries. Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored once on the ground and once through the air and had a total of 128 yards (86 rushing, 42 receiving). For UMass, Tony Nelson went over 1,000 yards on the season during his 24carry, 154-yard effort. Liam Cruz had nine receptions for 80 yards as the top target for Liam Coen, who was 22-for-41 for 211 yards, one TD and four interceptions. Defensively, Jeromy Miles was credited with a game-high 18 tackles. Sparked by Parent’s 100-yard interception return, UNH raced out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead on a Tom Bishop (Newfield, N.Y.) career-long 46-yard field goal at 13:34. On the subsequent UMass possession, the Minutemen faced 3rd-and-goal at the UNH 6 and Coen’s pass intended for Joe Sanford was deflected at the goal line by Dino Vasso (Crum Lynne, Pa.). Parent caught the ball and, surrounded by a fleet of blockers, rumbled down the left sideline for the TD at 9:30. New Hampshire’s defense immediately gained the ball back on a Devon Jackson (Williamstown, N.J.) interception that gave the ‘Cats possession at the UM 43.

ORONO, Maine -- Trailing 24-21 with under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the No. 11 University of New Hampshire football team scored with 3:27 remaining and held on to capture a 28-24 win over the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon at a cold, snow-covered Alfond Stadium. The Wildcats captured the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) North Division Regular Season title, the Brice-Cowell Musket and have solidified their chances for a fifth-straight trip to the NCAA FCS Tournament. UNH will await its placement in the NCAA field, which will be announced during the selection show on Sunday night (7 p.m.) live on ESPNU. The game-winning touchdown came on a 22-yard strike from R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) at 3:27 in the fourth quarter, which gave the Wildcats a 28-24 lead that they never relinquished.The score proved to be the only tally of the quarter as the Black Bears had a pair of chances with the football in the final three minutes, but both drives were foiled by interceptions by Terrence Klein (Westwood, N.J.). UNH improves to 9-2, its best regular-season finish since 2005 (11-2), and captures the CAA North title with a 6-2 mark. The Wildcats retain possession of the coveted Brice-Cowell Musket, awarded to the winner of the UNH-Maine game, for the six-straight year. All-and-all, New Hampshire holds the Granite Bowl (via a win over Dartmouth), the Bill Knight Award (via a win over Massachusetts) and the Brice-Cowell Musket. Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) had 12 carries for 89 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Boyle and Toman connected twice for the other two UNH scored. Towan finished 6-of-12 for 127 yards and two TD passes despite the cold and snowy conditions, while Boyle was the team’s leading receiver with three catches for 55 yards. Maine’s Michael Brusko was 6-of-15 for 98 yards and a pair of late interceptions, but was the team’s leading rusher with 18 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown. Jhamal Fluellen had 14 rushes for 33 yards and a score, while Pushaun Brown had 16 yards and a score.

CARBONDALE, Ill.— Senior kicker Tom Bishop (Newfield, N.Y.) booted a career-high five field goals to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to a 29-20 NCAA FCS First-Round victory at Southern Illinois on Saturday at McAndrew Stadium. UNH, which will travel to play at No. 3 seed Northern Iowa, on Sat., Dec. 6 advances to the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth time in the last five years. Southern Illinois took the early lead on a long, 12-play, 68-yard drive when Kyle Dougherty booted a 47-yard field goal through the uprights at 8:23 of the first quarter. The Wildcats tied the game at 4:41 of the first quarter when Bishop capped a 12-play 72 yard drive with a 27 yard field goal to knot the contest at 3-3. Dougherty came out on the field again at 14:19 of the second quarter and booted his second field goal of the day, a 30-yarder to give the Salukis a 6-3 advantage. A 52 yard kickoff return by senior John Clements (Hammonton, N.J.) gave UNH the football on the Southern Illinois 37 yard line and UNH drove to the 17 yard line where Bishop kicked his second field goal of the game at 12:50 of the second quarter, a 35 yarder to tie the contest 6-6. An R.J. Toman pass was intercepted at the UNH 12 yard line and Saluki quarterback Chris Dieker scored on a 1 yard run to give the home team a 13-6 advantage with 4:28 left to play before the half. After a 45 yard return by junior Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.), Bishop booted his third field goal of the afternoon, a 28-yarder with 2:34 remaining before the half to cut the Southern Illinois lead to 13-9. UNH put together an amazing 44-second, 80 yard drive in the waning seconds of the first half, including a 54-yard pass play from Toman to senior wide receiver Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.). The drive ended with back-to-back rushing attempts by Toman, including a 2 yard TD run with 26 seconds remaining, giving the Wildcats a 16-13 advantage heading into the lockerroom. UNH took the ball on the UNH 30 yard line after the first Saluki drive of the second half ended with a missed 47 yard field goal, however a pass from Toman to Boyle was deflected and intercepted on the UNH 42 yard line.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A 36-yard interception return by Terrell McMoore in the third quarter proved to be the difference as No. 4 Northern Iowa escaped with a 36-34 win over the 10th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team in Saturday night’s NCAA FCS Championship quarterfinal action at UNI Dome. The Wildcats, who have advanced to the quarterfinal round four times during their current streak of five-straight tournament appearances, ends the 2008 season with a 10-3 mark, while UNI, which advances to play Richmond in the national semifinals, improves to 12-2. UNI was driving late in the third quarter and went for it on fourth down at the UNH 37 and senior linebacker Sean Ware (Bristol, Conn.) stuffed the play to give the Wildcats the football on downs. However, R.J. Toman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) attempted to pass across the field, but it was intercepted and returned by McMoore to give UNI a 36-27 advantage with 2:26 left in the third quarter. The Wildcats responded down 10 as Toman completed a huge 34-yard pass to Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) to give UNH the ball at the UNI 1-yard line and senior running back Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.) completed the scoring drive to cut the Northern Iowa lead to just two points (36-34) with 12:20 to play in the contest. UNH would have two offensive possessions in which they were unable to capitalize. The first drive of eight-plays 36 yards ended in a De’Veon Harris interception, while UNH’s final touch ended with a turnover on downs at 1:07. UNI was able to kill the clock and preserve the two-point win. UNI held a 10-7 advantage in the second half that proved to be the difference, however the first two quarters saw 53 combined points including 34 in the second quarter. The Panthers got the scoring going as Toman was intercepted on the Wildcats’ second drive of the game and Northern Iowa took over on the UNH 14 yard line. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Panther QB Pat Grace ran in for a 14 yard TD to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead at 10:47. Toman recovered nicely from the interception on UNH’s next possession and engineered an impressive drive that featured a mix of the run and pass. The eight-play 74-yard drive was capped off by a 17-yard TD run by junior running back Chad Kackert (Simi Valley, Calif.) up the middle. 2009 New Hampshire

CAA FOOTBALL CAA Football fans thought the league’s opening season in 2007 was spectacular in terms of success. Little did they know 2008 would build off the previous season’s success, and include the league’s fourth National Championship. In 2008 as many as six teams ranked among the national Top-25 during the season, while both James Madison and Richmond had a strangle-hold on the No. 1 spot over the last 11 weeks of the season. CAA Football upped its record of national player of the week honorees by earning 19 last season, compared to 15 accolades in 2007. All of the regular season success carried over into the postseason when, once again, CAA Football equalled its own record by placing five squads in the NCAA Division I Football Championships. Prior to the 2007 season no conference had earned more than four berths in one season, and CAA Football has now done it twice in two seasons. The CAA Football dominance in the regular season carried over into the postseason as four of its five playoff squads advanced to the quarterfinal round. Both James Madison and Richmond moved on to the final four, marking the ninth time in 12 years a CAA Football squad has competed in the semifinals. Richmond logged a come-from-behind win over Northern Iowa in the semifinals, giving the league its fifth National Final berth in six seasons. The Spiders then went on to dominate Montana in the Championship game, 24-7, to earn the league’s first NCAA crown under the CAA Football banner. Richmond’s National Championship was also the league’s fourth in 10 years and third over the last six seasons. Following the season, the league boasted six Top-25 teams, four Top-10 squads and notched a total of 78 All-America honors. The quality and depth of CAA Football is unmatched in the FCS. Ten of the league’s 12 teams have participated in the NCAA playoffs over the past eight seasons and at least one team has advanced to the national semifinals in nine of the last 12 years. In 2004, James Madison claimed the national championship with a 31-21 triumph over Montana, becoming the first team to reach the title game by winning three road playoff contests since the field expanded to 16 teams in 1986. Delaware rolled past Colgate 40-0 to capture the national championship in 2003, becoming the first team to ever post a shutout in the title game. No other conference has had two different teams win national titles in back-to-back years. Massachusetts earned a national championship in 1998, beating perennial power Georgia Southern, 55-43. Along with the team accomplishments, the conference has accumulated numerous individual accolades. Santos (2006), William & Mary quarterback Lang Campbell (2004), Villanova running back Brian Westbrook (2001), Villanova wide receiver Brian Finneran (1997), New Hampshire running back Jerry Azumah (1998) and Towson running back Dave Meggett (1988) all have won the prestigious Walter Payton Award under the league banner. James Madison linebacker Derrick Lloyd received the Buck Buchanan Award in 2001. New Hampshire’s Sean McDonnell (2005), James Madison’s Mickey Matthews (1999 & 2008), Villanova’s Andy Talley (1997) and Boston University’s Dan Allen (1993) have earned the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award. Richmond’s Mike London (2008), Matthews (2004), Massachusetts’ Mark Whipple (1998) and Talley (1997) have garnered the American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year honor. The CAA Football geographic footprint encompasses much of the East Coast with schools located from Maine to Virginia. Members include Delaware, Hofstra, James Madison, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Richmond, Towson, Villanova and William and Mary.

THE ADMINISTRATION Dr. Mark Huddleston - President Mark W. Huddleston is the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire. He brings three decades of experience in public and private higher education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator, most recently as president of Ohio Wesleyan University. His term at UNH commenced in July 2007. Huddleston began his academic career at the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. He then joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1980, where he remained for the next 24 years. Dr. Huddleston chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. He was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2001, where he managed 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 fulltime faculty and staff, and served in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. Having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo, Huddleston went on to receive both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been active as a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an advisor in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston was raised in Syracuse and spent 24 years at the University of Delaware in various capacities. For UNH he says, the best years are yet to come—and he is happy that he will be a part of that. “I like to think I’m a really accessible guy. I see students on a regular basis when I’m wandering around campus,” Huddleston says, acknowledging that, with 12,000 more students at UNH than at Ohio Wesleyan, it will be a different experience but not one he wants to disappear. “If I had wanted to be a CEO of a large company, tucked away in an office somewhere, I would have done that,” he says. “I think people here really want a president that they see and feel is a part of the fabric of UNH. That’s very appealing to me.” Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.

THE ADMINISTRATION Marty Scarano - Director of Athletics Marty Scarano is in the midst of his 10th year as Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. There have been over $8.5 million in capitol improvements since his hiring in the summer of 2000. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 renovation included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. Scarano brought about the completion of the $2.15 million Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility in the summer of 2000. The addition of a center-ice scoreboard and message board at the Whittemore Center was completed in 2001. In 2002, UNH athletics renovated Memorial Field along with the Bigglestone Plaza and Bremner Field on the former Upper Field. The two fields, which feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lighting, were built at a cost of $1.5 million apiece. In addition, construction was completed to enlarge and improve the women’s locker rooms in the UNH Field House. Two other major improvements to benefit UNH’s studentathletes have been the renovation of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center for Strength and Conditioning, which features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, new offices and design, and a complete overhaul of the Student-Athlete Academic Center. Scarano and the University are also in the midst of the planning and fundraising for a multi-purpose outdoor facility. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, UNH has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department was host of highly-successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009, and Manchester will once again be the site of the Northeast Regionals in 2011. UNH has had the opportunity to host two NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Fours in the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley, as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional, which took place at the Whittemore Center. This past season, men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, the men’s and women’s ski teams and gymnastics, as well as members of men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams, all competed in the NCAA postseason. With all of these initiatives and accomplishments, UNH athletics has consistently been ranked in the top 90 programs among all Division I institutions in the battle for the NACDA Directors Cup, which is well ahead of nearly all of UNH’s conference opponents. Scarano’s many accomplishments during his tenure have played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings in March 2002. UNH’s graduation rate for athletes has maintained levels at or exceeding 90 percent, which puts it among the nation’s best in Division I. The men’s ice hockey team won the regular season Hockey East title in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008, and then advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002 and 2003. The Wildcat women’s hockey team won the Hockey East Tournament Championship for the fourth straight season in 2009, which also included Frozen Four appearances in 2006 and 2008. The women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever EAGL title in 2003, when the event was hosted at the Whitt. The volleyball team won an America East crown in 2002 and 2003 and went on to the NCAA tournament in those same seasons. The field hockey team made the NCAA’s in 2000, while women’s lacrosse made “The Big Dance” in 2004 and again in 2008. UNH football returned to national prominence and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for parts of three seasons from 2005-07, and made it to the NCAA FCS playoffs the last five years, including the quarterfinals for three consecutive seasons. Additionally, 17 coaches have won 54 Coach of the Year awards during Scarano’s tenure. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-2006 and 2006-07. Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. The college’s athletic program excelled both in and out of the classroom under his supervision and six different athletic facilities received renovations, including the Schlessman Pool, Washburn Field, the Carle Weight Room and a new press box at Stewart Field. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. During Scarano’s tenure at Colorado College, the men’s ice hockey team became a regular at the NCAA men’s ice hockey championships. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have two daughters, Lynden, a freshman at UNH, and Corey, and a son, Kyle. 2009 New Hampshire Football • 64 •

THE SUPPORT STAFF Academic Support/Joanne Maldari The University of New Hampshire is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the athletes give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of academic support services that is available to all studentathletes. Serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support is Joanne Maldari, a 1990 graduate of the College of Holy Cross. Maldari holds a B.A. in Psychology-Premedical and went on to earn her Master’s degree in Counseling from Springfield College in 1993. Assisting her with her duties and with studentathlete tutoring is Cathy Kullen-Leach. Maldari has a wealth of experience in academic counseling. While working on her Master’s degree, Maldari served as an academic counselor for the Central Connecticut State University soccer team, and the Springfield College football team. Maldari also provided psychological assistance to injured athletes and advised trainers regarding client’s psychological adjustment to injury while serving as an athletic counselor for the Springfield College Training Room. Below is a look at UNH’s student-athlete academic center:

Sports Psychology/Tim Churchard Tim Churchard works with the UNH football team in the area of Sports Psychology. Churchard works on a one-on-one basis with student-athletes, helping them achieve maximum performance through psychological and psycho-physiological preparation. Churchard also spent seven seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for the successful UNH men’s ice hockey program. A multi-sport player while at UNH from 1963-65, Churchard was a running back for the football team under Chief Boston and Andy Mooradian and also played ice hockey under A. Barr “Whoop” Snively. He earned his undergraduate degree from UNH in Liberal Arts in 1967 before embarking on a career in education and human resource management/consultation. A native of Saugus, Mass., he earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Salem State in 1972 and a GAGS in Education in 1984 from UNH. Churchard began teaching at UNH in 1984, serving as an instructor in the education department. In addition to those duties, he has also been an instructor at UNH’s Whittemore School of Business and Economics since 1991.

THE SUPPORT STAFF Strength and Conditioning/Paul Chapman Paul Chapman enters his ninth year as the strength and conditioning coach at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure at UNH, he helped coordinate the building of the state-of-the-art Jerry Azumah Performance Center and his efforts have been key in guiding UNH athletes to NCAA appearances in football, men’s and women’s hockey, gymnastics, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, track and field and skiing. Chapman had been the director of strength and conditioning for the University of North Dakota from 1992-2001 and served there on an interim basis during the 1991-92 season. During his stint with the Fighting Sioux, he worked with head coaches to tailor sports specific strength and conditioning programs for 18 intercollegiate sports. He also oversaw and administrated four weight training facilities and supervised a staff of 10 assistants. His efforts were an integral part of a recent winning tradition at UND, as the football team was the Division II national champion in 2001, the men’s ice hockey team won a Division I national title in 2000 and 1997 and the women’s basketball team was the Division II national champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Chapman is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (strength and conditioning coach certified), USA-Weightlifting (certified level 1 coach); the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and he was the state director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in North Dakota from 1991-95. He has also authored four publications related to strength and conditioning and has trained and consulted several NFL, CFL and NHL athletes, and prospective athletes preparing for allstar games, bowl games and pre-draft testing. Chapman is a 1990 graduate of Dickinson State University in North Dakota with a B.S. degree in Biology. He then went on to earn a M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of North Dakota in 1994. An outstanding college athlete, Chapman was inducted into the Dickinson State Athletic Hall of Fame for his efforts on the gridiron. He was a two-time first-team All-American and a one-time secondteam All-American as a football player and was a four-year letter winner. Upon graduation, he was a fourth round draft choice of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League. Chapman, 38, has a wife, Kimberly, and two children, Tyler and Brittani.

Athletic Training/Jon Dana and Cindy Michaud The Sports Medicine Department at the University of New Hampshire consists of six full-time, several interns, and part-time certified and licensed athletic trainers. Jon Dana, Director of Sports Medicine, has worked with the football team since 1988. Cindy Michaud, a former UNH student athletic trainer, has been with the football team since her return in 1999. Other full-time athletic trainers for the University are , Glenn Riefenstahl, Renee Kleszczynski and Dan Sedory. Sedory serves primarily as the Coordinator for the CAAHEP approved Athletic Training Curriculum. The Department works out of two locations, the Field House and the Whittemore Center, both athletic training rooms utilize currently available modalities including muscle stimulators, ultrasound, heat, cryotherapy, and hydrotherapy. The Certified Athletic Trainer provides a myriad of services to the department and the student-athlete. These include, but are not limited to, initial injury assessment and management, emergency injury/illness management, referral to appropriate professionals, interface with associated physicians and others, rehabilitation, counseling, administrative duties including insurance coordination, supervision of practices and games, development and implementation of emergency plans, as well as student athletic trainer supervision. The athletic training room is considered to be “a designated facility where comprehensive health care services are provided. Comprehensive health care services include practice and game preparation, injury/illness evaluation, first aid and emergency care, follow-up care, rehabilitation and related services.” (National Athletic Trainer’s Association Education Council).

THE AZUMAH PERFORMANCE CENTER As a starting tailback at the University of New Hampshire, Jerry Azumah ‘99 earned a reputation as an unstoppable record-breaker. By the time he graduated from the university and joined the Chicago Bears as a fifth-round draft pick, he had already smashed four NCAA Division I-AA career records and been awarded the Walter Payton Award for his outstanding achievement as the nation’s top offensive player. At the age of 25, he did it again. With a gift to fund the Jerry Azumah Athletic Performance Center, he was the youngest UNH alum on record to give a gift of more than $100,000 to his alma mater. The gift provided funding for the renovation and complete overhaul, including state-of-the-art equipment of the University’s strength and conditioning facility located in the UNH Field House. His National Football League profile will tell you that Jerry Azumah was 5- 11, weighed 195, and played defensive cornerback with the Chicago Bears,” says Marty Scarano, University of New Hampshire athletic director. “What those statistics miss is the size of Jerry Azumah’s heart. We are so proud to have Jerry’s name affiliated with the University of New Hampshire. Jerry was a leader while attending UNH and continues to set a great example as a graduate. “ Azumah is the son of Theophilius and Bertha Azumah, natives of Ghana, who now live in Worcester. He came to UNH in 1995 as a freshman, majored in sociology, and minored in justice studies. “My scholarship at UNH allowed me to pursue my interests in the classroom, build a successful college football career and changed my life on every level,” says Azumah. “I’m pleased to be able to make a major contribution to my university and to bring new opportunities to today’s student athletes.” During his four years at UNH, Azumah was an All-American tailback and has been referred to as a player who comes along once in a coach’s lifetime by Coach Bill Bowes. He holds numerous University records, including the record for touchdowns rushing (60) and touchdowns overall (69), and Division 1-AA records for rushing yards (6,193), all purpose yards (8,376) and points scored (424). He has had the six best and eight of the top ten UNH rushing games ever and holds the alltime Division 1-AA rushing record of 6,193 yards. At that time, he was the only runner in Division 1-AA history to have four 1,000-yard seasons. Azumah is one of the only players in the history of the NFL to make the transition from playing an offensive position to being a starting cornerback on the defensive side of the football In 2003 he became the only Wildcat to ever play in the Pro Bowl, where he excelled as a return specialist. He was a full-time starter at cornerback from 2001 through 2005 and made significant contributions on defense. Azumah holds the distinction of being the last Chicago Bear to score a touchdown at Soldier Field when he intercepted Donovan McNabb in a divisional playoff game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles and ran 39 yards for a touchdown on January 19, 2002. The play gave the Bears a 14-13 lead in the third quarter. Azumah announced his retirement from NFL football in 2006 due to injuries, but he continues to keep in touch with his alma mater and is always looking for new ways he can help the University, the athletic department and the Wildcat fooball program.

THE FACILITIES Cowell Stadium/Mooradian Field The home of Wildcat football for the past 69 years is historic Cowell Stadium, located at the west end of the UNH campus in Durham.Thanks to a generous donation by Ed Fish, the field has had a facelift in the form of a brand new FieldTurf surface, which was installed prior to the start of the 2007 season. Known as Alumni Field until 1952, the stadium was made possible by contributions of the UNH Alumni and was the first project of the Alumni Fund in the history of the University. Dedicated as a part of the Lewis Fields on Oct. 10, 1936, the stadium replaced what is now Memorial Field, the current home for several Wildcat athletic teams. The largest crowd for a football game in Cowell Stadium dates back to 1977, when 20,000 watched the Wildcats fall to UMass, 19-6, in a showdown for the Yankee Conference crown. Named for the former Wildcat athletics director and football coach, William H.“Butch” Cowell came to Durham from the Haskell Institute in 1915 and proceeded to change the face of athletics at the University. Over the first 22 years of intercollegiate football, New Hampshire managed just 23 victories. At the end of his 22-year coaching career (1915-36), Cowell had amassed an 84-67-22 mark, including stunning upsets over Army, Holy Cross and Brown. A founder of the American Football Coaches Association, Cowell served as the organization’s president in 1925 and, until his death, served as the AFCA’s permanent secretary-treasurer (1925-40). On Oct.18, 1952, at the Homecoming game vs. Springfield College, the stadium was rededicated in Cowell’s honor during halftime ceremonies. UNH honored former athletics director Andy Mooradian by dedicating the playing field in his name during halftime ceremonies on Homecoming (1996). Mooradian was involved with Wildcat athletics for 45 years as a player, coach and administrator. Most recently, he served as UNH’s athletics director from 1966-86, guiding the program from the NCAA II level to Division I during his tenure. A national leader on the intercollegiate athletic scene, Mooradian was president of NACDA, the ECAC and the Yankee Conference and was a member of several prominent NCAA committees.

The James H. “Red” Hayes Locker Room Solely for the use of the football players and staff is the James H. “Red” Hayes Football Locker Room, located on the bottom level of the Field House adjacent to Cowell Stadium. Constructed in 1988, the locker room was a gift of Red Hayes (‘32), a former Wildcat player under legendary coach William Cowell who went on to a successful business career and gave distinguished service to the State of New Hampshire. The locker room features 110 separate lockers that accomodates each player’s equipment and uniform, as well as a players’ lounge. Adjacent to the locker room area, the lounge serves as a study and meeting area. Players can unwind in front of a large screen TV, complete with plush furnishings and a “stadium” seating area.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE The University of New Hampshire is a public land-, sea-, and space grant university serving an undergraduate population of 13,061 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, UNH was among the early state institutions of higher education whose formation was made possible by federal government land grants. The grants were provided to establish colleges to serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. First situated in Hanover, N.H., in connection with Dartmouth College, New Hampshire College moved to Durham in 1893 after Benjamin Thompson, a prosperous farmer, bequeathed land and money to further the development of the college. In 1923, the state legislature granted it a new charter as the University of New Hampshire. Experiencing tremendous growth, the University now enrolls nearly 14,000 students from nearly all 50 states and 58 countries

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE in undergraduate and graduate programs. At the heart of the University’s undergraduate studies is the General Education Program, a core program with a breadth of academic subjects. The GEP aims to acquaint the student with some of the major modes of thought necessary to understand oneself, others, society and the world. Campus In recent years, several athletic facilities have received major upgrades and overhauls, including the Lundholm Gymnasium basketball and volleyball court. The University also completed a new $2.15 million track and field facility on September 1, 2001. Other additions have been two brand new $1.5 million outdoor artficial fields, Memorial Field and Bremner Field. One of the most recent additions was the Jerry Azumah Performance Center located in the UNH Field House. The brand new strength and conditioning facilty was dedicated on July 8, 2003. In recent years, the University completed a $15 million science and engineering building (Morse Hall) and a $4.5 million renovation of Hewitt Hall to expand the School of Health and Human Services. The University has also has completed construction on four capital construction building projects recently. A renovation of Dimond Library was completed. At a cost of $31.1 million, the new 120,000 square foot Biological Sciences Building (Rudman Hall) and the Spaulding Life Sciences Renovation project provide state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories. The $8.2 million renovation project for the Memorial Union Building modernized the existing student union building to include kitchen and dining facilities, two theaters, student mailboxes, lounges and meeting rooms and the Bookstore. Most recently Holloway Commons Dining Hall was completed and provides students with one of the finest on-campus dining facilities in the nation. In November of 1995, construction reached completion on the Whittemore Center, a $27 million Recreation and Sports Complex. This project included a state-of-the-art 6,000 to 7,500 seat arena used for hockey, basketball, gymnastics,concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreational sports facility within the structure which had housed Snively Arena. UNH is home to the NASA-recognized Space Science Center; the Institute for Study for Earth, Oceans and Space; and the Institute of Marine Science and Engineering. The English program is staffed by winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Young Poets Award. The Whittemore School of Business and Economics, established in 1962, is consistently ranked near the top among all business schools in a nationwide poll of business school deans.
