University of New Hampshire Athletic Department Mission Statement: The mission of the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of New Hampshire is to provide student-athletes a collegiate experience that is enriched by their participation in programs which are competitive at the NCAA Division I level both regionally and nationally. In the past five years, the University has added eight new residential halls, most recently opening up three new dorms in 2008.
The University has completed renovations to numerous buildings throughout the academic campus. Most recenty, Kingsbury Hall (shown) underwent a $52 million renovation.

Nestled in New Hampshire’s seacoast region, the UNH campus offers a pleasing mix of classic and modern buildings and college greens that gradually gives way to 2,600 acres of woods, fields, and farms.
Opened in 2003, Holloway Commons (shown) offers award winning dining services to UNH students.
Amtrak’s Downeaster, with a station located on campus, is a great way to travel to Boston or Portland. As a passenger, you’ll enjoy overlooking miles of scenic landscape along the way.
New Hampshire Wildcats
The Wildcat sculpture, commissioned by the UNH alumni association, was created by Matthew Grey Palmer and is displayed on Main Street in front of the Whittemore Center and Memorial Field.
The Jerry Azumah Performance Center opened its doors in the summer of 2003 to UNH student-athletes. A generous donation by Azumah, a former cornerback with the Chicago Bears and the 1999 recipient of the Walter Payton Award, allowed for a new state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center.
The men’s soccer locker room underwent a major overhaul in 2002 thanks to the generous donations of alumni and friends of men’s soccer. Eric Chinburg (‘85) built and installed 26 lockers and a maple boot board. In addition to Eric, Dean Jackson (‘69), Tom Johnson (‘76), Jeff Growney (‘82), Dr. George Gaillardetz (‘83), Ron Fancy (‘84), Robert Black (‘77), and Michael Lagendyk (‘96) all have dedicated lockers thanks to their generosity.
2009 Men’s Soccer
Bremner Field was renovated into an AstroPlay field with full lighting in the summer of 2002. The men’s soccer team played under the lights at Bremner for the first time in a 2-1 win over in-state rival Dartmouth College on October 1, 2003 and has an impressive 13-4-1 record on the field. The Wildcats will play five games, including the UNH NIKE Fall Classic, on Bremner Field.
The other location for UNH men’s soccer games is Lewis Fields, which has a grass pitch. It is part of the University’s athletic complex located on campus and is adjacent to Cowell Stadium. The Wildcats will host four regular-season match-ups at Lewis Fields this season.
In 1995, construction of the $27 million Recreation and Sport Complex reached completion. The new Whittemore Center includes a state-of-the-art 6,500 to 7,500 seat arena for hockey, concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreation sports facility.
Lundholm Gymnasium, the home of UNH basketball and volleyball, has recieved a complete facelift in recent years. Since 2001, the gym floor has been replaced and new lighting and sound systems were installed. Most recently, the bleachers were replaced in the summer of 2007.

Rob Thompson Head Coach • 15th Season • Maine ‘89
Head Coach Rob Thompson enters his 17th season with the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer program, his 15th as head coach. Thompson owns a career 106-107-40 record and has led the team to four America East tournament berths in the last six seasons, including three straight. Last season, the ‘Cats went 7-7-4, including 2-4-2 in the America East. The Wildcats got off to a fast start in 2008 as they posted a 5-0-2 record to open up the season, with wins over Memphis and Massachusetts. The Wildcats kept pace the rest of the season and clinched the final playoff spot in the America East Tournamnet as they defeated UMBC in dramatic fashion, 3-2, on Oct. 29. In 2007 the Wildcats made a late push for a postseason berth as they pieced together a 4-1-7 record down the stretch to clinch a spot in the America East Tournament. The Wildcats would make the most of the opportunity as they defeated Boston University, 4-2, on penalty kicks after finishing regulation with a 0-0 tie to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament. In 2006 Thompson led the Wildcats to a record of 12-5-3, its best mark since 1994. The squad advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament and Thompson and his staff were awarded Coaching Staff of the Year honors by America East. However, Thompson’s impact goes beyond results on the field as his Wildcats have received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for two consecutive years, for having a team with over a 3.0 grade point average. Prior to becoming head coach in 1995, Thompson was an assistant with the program for two seasons and the Wildcats made their only NCAA appearance in 1994 after compiling a 15-5-2 record. In his first season as head coach, Thompson led the Wildcats to 10 victories. Thompson’s 1997 team captured a #22 national ranking. He became UNH’s all-time wins leader in 2001, reaching the 50-win mark. His 2003 squad was ranked as high as #2 in the region, and the 2002 Wildcats spent the entire regular season ranked in New England. Prior to arriving at UNH, Thompson coached extensively in the Washington, D.C., area, and directed club teams to both state and regional titles. The Virginia native spent three years coaching and teaching at South Lakes High School in Reston, Va., and three years coaching in the Virginia Olympic Development Program. Thompson is heavily involved in the organization and development of youth soccer in the Seacoast region as well as throughout the state of New Hampshire. In addition to directing the highly successful Soccer Dimensions youth camps, Thompson served as the NSCAA State Director and is a Region I Olympic Development Program staff member. He holds a USSF “A” license as well as the NSCAA Premier Diploma. Over the past 10 years Thompson has coached Seacoast United teams to eight USYSA state titles and two New England Super Y championship berths. Thompson, who coached the US Soccer Developmental Academy, was named the U-18 Northeast Conference Coach of the Year for 2007-08. He has coached the Seacoast United U-18 boys development academy since 2007. His 2001 U-16 boys team finished fourth at the Super Y League national championship. In 2007, Thompson led his SUSC U-17 boys team to the USYSA Region I Final. Thompson graduated from the University of Maine in 1989 with a B.A. degree in Zoology. While working towards a post-graduate degree in physical education, Thompson captained Montgomery (Md.) College to a national junior college ranking and earned All-State and All-Region honors. Thompson is currently pursuing a master’s degree in kinesiology at UNH. He is married to Lea (Craft), a member of two national championship soccer teams at Barry University in Florida. They reside in Durham, N.H., with their daughters Chloe, Jordan, and Brooke.

Ewan Seabrook
Assistant Coach • Second Season • Oneonta State ‘02 Ewan Seabrook, a 2002 Oneonta State graduate, served as the assistant coach at Hartwick College from 2004-08. In addition to coaching the Wildcats, Seabrook has assisted Rob Thompson’s Seacoast United Under-18 team since 2008 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2009. During his four years at Hartwick the team compiled a record of 39-25-13 and defeated Oneonta State, 2-0, to win the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Championship in 2005. The team, which earned its seventh NCAA appearance in 10 years, then went on to make back-toback semifinal conference playoff appearances in 2006 as part of the ASC and in 2007 with the Mid-American Conference. Seabrook played college soccer at Iona College and SUNY- College at Oneonta. As a player he was selected to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) all-rookie team while playing for the Gaels. While playing for the Red Dragons, Seabrook was on the SUNYAC academic all-conference team and earned Commissioner’s List honors. In 2002, he graduated with honors from Oneonta State with a bachelors of science in Business Economics. Prior to his position at Hartwick, Seabrook worked as the graduate assistant coach at Drury University (Mo.) from 2003-04. Seabrook is a Lewes, England native, and holds a NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Advanced National Diploma. Ewan is currently persuing his master’s in business at UNH’s Whittemore School.
New Hampshire Wildcats The University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team hopes to get out of the gate as fast as they did last year, as they posted a 5-0-2 record to open up the season and were ranked as high as fifth on the in the NSCAA/adidas Northeast Regional Poll. Highlights of the non-conference schedule included wins over Memphis and Massachusetts, which won the Atlantic-10 and advanced to the 2007 Final Four. The Wildcats kept pace the rest of the season and clinched the final playoff spot in the America East tournamnet as they defeated UMBC in dramatic fashion. He ad co ach Rob Thompson will return 19 letterwinners to go along with eight skilled newcomers, which will help fill the voids of the loss of last year’s talented senior class.
Forwards:
Senior Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass.), who was named 2006 America East Striker and Rookie of the Year, will once again anchor the offensive force of the Wildcats. Banks led the team in goals, totaling seven in 15 games played. Dylan George (Bangor, Maine) had two goals last season, including the memorable game-winner against UMBC to clinch a playoff spot for the Wildcats. The junior, who played in all 18 games for the Wildcats, also totaled three assists for seven points. The Wildcats also return offensive threat Sean Coleman (Straham, N.H.), who posted two goals and two assists for six points while seeing action in all 18 games last season. Senior Joe Annese (Attleboro, Mass.) will add experience upfield, while newcomers Antti Arvola (Espoo, Finland), Charlie Roche (Haverhill, Mass.) and Jordan Thomas (Mohnton, Pa.) will add youth to the talented Wildcat offense.

Backs:
Robin Gerum (Kullavik, Sweden), who tallied the lone Wildcat goal in last year’s America East quarterfinal game, will look to pick up where he left off last season. Joe Corsello (York, Maine) and Pat Gay (North Stonington, Conn.) will also add experience to the backfield. S ophomore Alex Russell (Harisburg, Pa.), who saw solid action last season, will be joined by Caleb Shaw (Hampton, N.H.), a Marist College transfer, who played in 12 games and tallied a goal for the Red Foxes. Ne wcomers Alex Hussein (Haverhill, Mass.) and Ryan McNabb (Downingtown, Pa.) will round out the backfield.
Goalkeepers:
Junior Colin O’Donnell (Hampden, Mass.), who saw the most time in net last season, will be back with a solid year of experience behind him. Last year, O’Donnell saw action in 15 games and finished with a record of 6-6-3, including four shutouts. Fellow junior Chris Devine (Hampton, N.H.), who saw action in three games last season, along with sophomore Patrick Ryan (Weymouth, Mass.) will also be available for net action.
2009 Men’s Soccer Midfielders:
Marcus Barr (Wallingford, Pa.) and Brad Hilton (Merrimack, N.H.) are expected to anchor the midfield and help set the Wildcat offense in motion. Barr, who saw action in 15 games for the Wildcats, was selected as the team’s Most Improved Player last season and hopes to showcase his talents this upcoming season. Hilton returns after an impressive debut season as he was selected to the America East All-Rookie Team and earned two assists, both on game-winning goals. Junior Greg Frost (Cumberland, Maine), who saw action last season, will continue to develop in the midfield this upcoming season, while Bobby Cooley (Northborough, Mass.) returns to the Wildcats for his senior year. Sophomores Josh Bronner (Belchertown, Mass.) and Greg Brown (Salem, N.H.) will look to add minutes on the field this season, while newcomers Gustav Nilsson (Pixbo, Sweden) and Turner Davis (Barrington, R.I.) are also ready to contribute to the midfield.
2009 Schedule:
The Wildcats, who went undefeated in the first seven games last season, will open up the 2009 campaign on the road at Iona (9/1). Th e s q u a d w i l l return home to host the 21st Annual UNH Nike Fall Soccer Classic where they will face Bucknell (Sept. 4) and Central Connecticut State (Sept. 6) on Bremner Field. Also playing in the tournament will be America East foe Vermont.
The Wildcats will then travel to Vermont where the Catamounts will host the Smith Barney Classic. First up at the tournament will be the UMass (9/11) Minutemen, who adavanced to the NCAA tournament for the third straight season, will be seeking revenge after falling to the Wildcats last year. The Wildcats will also face Portland (9/13) during the weekend. UNH will then host Colgate (9/19) in a night game on Bremner Field. The Wildcats will get their first feel of Lewis Fields when they host Harvard (9/23), which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2008. The Wildcats will travel to face Br yant (9/26), which is in its first year Division I competition and Fairfield (9/30). America East conference action will open up for the Wildcats at Boston U. (10/7). The Terriers, who won the 2008 America East tournament title, advanced NCAA tournament for the second straight year, this time reaching the second round. The Wildcats will also face UMBC (10/10) on the road, and the ‘Cats have not lost to the Retrievers since Oct. 19, 2005. The Wildcats will return home to host America East foes Hartford (10/14) and Vermont (10/17) before traveling to face Albany (10/21). The squad will then host Stony Brook (10/24) and Binghamton (10/28) to wrap up America East regular season action. The Wildcats will host intrastate rival Dartmouth (11/3) in a night game on Bremner Field to conclude the regular season.

Dr. Mark Huddleston President
Dr. Mark Huddleston was named the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire by the USNH Board of Trustees on April 18, 2007. Huddleston comes from Ohio Wesleyan University and brings three decades of experience in public and private higher education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator. He began his academic career at the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. He then joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1980, where he remained for the next 24 years. Dr. Huddleston chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. He was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2001, where he managed 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 fulltime faculty and staff, and served in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. Dr. Huddleston received his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo and received both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. An author of numerous books and articles, Dr. Huddleston has been active as a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an advisor in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Dr. Huddleston was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.
Marty Scarano
Athletic Director
Marty Scarano is in the midst of his 10th year as Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. There have been over $8.5 million in capitol improvements since his hiring in the summer of 2000. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 renovation included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. Scarano brought about the completion of the $2.15 million Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility in the summer of 2000. The addition of a center-ice scoreboard and message board at the Whittemore Center was completed in 2001. In 2002, UNH athletics renovated Memorial Field along with the Bigglestone Plaza and Bremner Field on the former Upper Field. The two fields, which feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lighting, were built at a cost of $1.5 million apiece. In addition, construction was completed to enlarge and improve the women’s locker rooms in the UNH Field House. Two other major improvements to benefit UNH’s student-athletes have been the renovation of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center for Strength and Conditioning, which features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, new offices and design, and a complete overhaul of the Student-Athlete Academic Center. Scarano and the University are also in the midst of the planning and fundraising for a multi-purpose outdoor facility. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, UNH has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department was host of highly-successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009, and Manchester will once again be the site of the Northeast Regionals in 2011. UNH has had the opportunity to host two NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Fours in the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley, as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional, which took place at the Whittemore Center. This past season, men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, the men’s and women’s ski teams and gymnastics, as well as members of men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams, all competed in the NCAA postseason. With all of these initiatives and accomplishments, UNH athletics has consistently been ranked in the top 90 programs among all Division I institutions in the battle for the NACDA Directors Cup, which is well ahead of nearly all of UNH’s conference opponents. Scarano’s many accomplishments during his tenure have played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings in March 2002. UNH’s graduation rate for athletes has maintained levels at or exceeding 90 percent, which puts it among the nation’s best in Division I. The men’s ice hockey team won the regular season Hockey East title in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008, and then advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002 and 2003. The Wildcat women’s hockey team won the Hockey East Tournament Championship for the fourth straight season in 2009, which also included Frozen Four appearances in 2006 and 2008. The women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever EAGL title in 2003, when the event was hosted at the Whitt. The volleyball team won an America East crown in 2002 and 2003 and went on to the NCAA tournament in those same seasons. The field hockey team made the NCAA’s in 2000, while women’s lacrosse made “The Big Dance” in 2004 and again in 2008. UNH football returned to national prominence and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for parts of three seasons from 2005-07, and made it to the NCAA FCS playoffs the last five years, including the quarterfinals for three consecutive seasons. Additionally, 17 coaches have won 54 Coach of the Year awards during Scarano’s tenure. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-2006 and 2006-07. Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. The college’s athletic program excelled both in and out of the classroom under his supervision and six different athletic facilities received renovations, including the Schlessman Pool, Washburn Field, the Carle Weight Room and a new press box at Stewart Field. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. During Scarano’s tenure at Colorado College, the men’s ice hockey team became a regular at the NCAA men’s ice hockey championships. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have two daughters, Lynden, a freshman at UNH, and Corey, and a son, Kyle.
