From the South: Take 95 North to 91 North (at New Haven, Conn.) to 84 East (Exit 29/Charter Oak Bridge). Follow 84 East through Connecticut to the Mass Pike (Route 90). 2009 Wildcat Volleyball
The Wildcats open up their 2009 campaign returning all but one player from last year’s squad, including two America East All-Rookie selections and two America East All-Conference second team honorees as they look to win their fourth America East Championship. After a 2008 season in which the Wildcats had the youngest team in the America East Conference, there is once again great optimism in the development of the program as Head Coach Jill Hirschinger and her staff look to add to their extensive success and tally up another winning campaign in 2009. With Hirschinger at the helm, the Wildcats will be in good hands as she returns for her 14th season as one of the most successful coaches in America East history. In her 14 years at UNH, she has become the program’s winningest coach and the first to surpass the 200-win milestone as she currently has 210 victories. Not to mention she has guided the Wildcats to 20-win seasons in six of the last 11 years. She has accumulated an impressive 626-429-10 overall record, owning a .593 winning percentage. Hirschinger’s 626 career-coaching victories rank her 15th on the all-time active NCAA wins list. This season, the Wildcats will play one their most competitive schedules as they square off against four teams in the top 100 RPI, including Albany (53), Arizona State (64), Northeastern (92) and Texas Christian University (100). The ‘Cats open up their 2009 season on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Syracuse Tournament as they take on the Orange as well as Siena and Sacramento State during the opening weekend of competition in Syracuse. The Wildcats open their home slate with a single exhibition match against Bentley College on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. The following weekend, UNH will travel to participate in the UConn Tournament and will play the host Huskies, Texas Christian University (TCU) and Long Island University (LIU) Sept. 3-4. New Hampshire will stay on the road as it squares off against Rhode Island, Brown and Syracuse at the URI Tournament and will continue play in the Ocean State with a single match against Bryant University. UNH will return home for the second-annual Holly Young Invitational Sept. 18-19, where they will welcome in Arizona State, Wyoming as well as Harvard. The Wildcats will conclude non-conference play with a single match at Northeastern on Sept. 22 and weekend tournament at Providence College Sept. 25-26 with the Friars, Coppin State and St. Francis (N.Y.). UNH will open America East conference play on Friday, Oct. 2 as it plays host to Binghamton (7 p.m.) and continues at home with Albany on Sunday, Oct. 4 (1 p.m.). The Wildcats will once again be led by senior captain Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) for the second consecutive season, as she headlines an impressive list of setters returning to the program in 2009. Last season, she collected a team-high 645 assists, rounding out 2,653 assists for her career, a mark, second only to Associate Head Coach Stacy Barnett (3,977). In addition to Uitti, the ‘Cats will also be led junior captain and fellow setter Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.). Last year, Heldman emerged as a key element in the Wildcat lineup as she ranked second on the roster with a career-high 342 assists. In addition to her impressive assist output, Heldman also added 115 digs, 18 kills and 12 blocks in 2008. Newcomer Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Junior Setter Mich.) also looks to add depth for the ‘Cats as she will challenge both Sara Heldman Uitti and Heldman for a spot in the lineup. The Wildcats should be back on track defensively in 2009. Leading the way for the ‘Cats is senior captain Kelly Harte (East Rochester, N.H.) who had a breakout year in 2008 after posting a career-high 116 digs and 11 assists. One player who has emerged in as a defensive leader is junior defensive specialist Jayde Huxtable (St. Charles, Ill.), as she looks to become a mainstay in the Wildcat lineup. Huxtable proved her worth in 2008, tallying 100 digs and six assists. Joining the two upperclassmen is newcomer Jessie Schnepp (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who will look to challenge both Huxtable and Harte and make her mark in the lineup. Even with great depth and experience on defense, the Wildcats look to truly make their mark offensively as they return two America East All-Rookie selections and two America East All-Conference second team honoreess into the fold as well as their top six kill leaders from a year ago. Headlining this illustrious group in the middle is senior middle blocker Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.). Fogarty was impressive as she earned America East All-Conference second team honors after compiling 221 kills, a total which ranked second on the team. Paired with an impressive kills total, Fogarty had a .247 hitting percentage, a clip which ranked ninth in the conference. She also registered the second most blocks on the squad with 73, while also collecting 40 digs and 24 assists. Junior middle blocker Justine Elliott (Mitchellville, Md.) also proved to be valued member of the Wildcat rotation as she notched the fifth highest kill total among all Wildcats with 111. She also totaled a career-high 96 blocks, a total that ranked sixth in the conference. Also looking to add depth to the Wildcat lineup in 2009 are red-shirt freshmen middle blockers Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) and Starsha Tunstall (East Providence, R.I), both who look to challenge FogJunior arty and Elliott for playing time. Defensive Specialist Senior outside hitter Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) leads a talented and deep group of outside hitters. Bates, an America East All-Conference Jayde Huxtable second team selection, registered 345 kills, a total which ranked fourth in the conference. She also tallied the second-most digs among all Wildcats with 245, while notching 51 blocks and 24 assists. This season also holds great promise for a group of young outside hitters looking to make their mark in 2009. Also making a major splash in 2008 was sophomore outside hitter Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who earned an All-Rookie Conference selection after registering the third highest kill total on the team with 181. Kills aside, she also compiled 104 digs, 25 blocks and three assists. Another returning America East Conference All-Rookie selection is Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.), who just a year ago tallied the fourth best kill total on the squad with 169. Adding to her stellar freshman campaign, Laquerre compiled 41 digs along with notching 28 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) also looks to serve a valuable piece of the puzzle in 2009 as she is coming off a freshman season in which she notched 41 kills, 15 blocks and 14 digs, all which ranked third among Wildcat rookies. Junior Laura Yegge (Redlands, Calif.) will be looked on to provide depth in the Wildcat lineup as she looks to build upon a sophomore campaign in which she registered a career-high 28 kills, along with four blocks and two digs. Sophomore Taylor Dressing (Gillette, N.J.) also looks to serve as a valued role player this season, as she looks to make her mark in the Wildcat rotation. Overall, the Wildcats return two All-Rookie Conference selections and two All-Conference second team selections as they have their sights on the America East playoffs. However, with a plethora of young talent at the core of the proJunior gram, the ‘Cats look to set the bar that much higher as they work towards capturing their fourth America East Championship Middle Blocker and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

HEAD COACH JILL HIRSCHINGER HIRSCHINGER YEAR-BY-YEAR
Jill Hirschinger, a four-time America East Coach of the Year, enters her 14th season as head coach of the University of New Hampshire volleyball program, marking her 31st season as a head volleyball coach. Hirschinger was named the head coach of the Wildcat 1979• 12-26-5 .337 volleyball program in the spring of 1996 by former athletic director Judy Ray, in the second 1980• 12-21-3 .375 season that UNH regained its varsity status. In her 14 years at UNH, she has become the program’s winningest coach and the first to surpass the 200-win milestone as she currently 1981• 25-16-2 .605 has 210 victories. Not to mention she has guided the Wildcats to 20-win seasons in six of the 1982• 16-14 .533 last 11 years. Hirschinger earned her 200th career win at UNH when the team captured a 3-1 1983• 14-13 .519 win over Southern Methodist University in the deciding match of the UNH Tournament on Sept. 15, 2007. 1984∞ 48-3 .941 Hirschinger has spent the past 30 seasons as a head coach at both the Division I 1985∞ 33-10 .767 and II levels. She has accumulated an impressive 626-429-10 overall record, owning a .592 1986∞ 33-7 .825 winning percentage. Hirschinger’s 626 career-coaching victories rank her 15th on the alltime active NCAA wins list. She reached the 600 win plateau in the second-to-last match of 1987∞ 40-9 .816 the regular season in 2006 with a 3-2 win over America East rival Binghamton on Nov. 11 at 1988∞ 19-18 .514 Lundholm Gym. She also coached a pair of All-American honorable mentions (Aly Coler and 1989∞ 30-7 .818 Beth Cole) during her tenure at UNH. Last season Hirschinger recruited a freshman class that included Pauline Acres, 1990∞ 36-6 .857 Jessy Dick, Taylor Dressing, Amy Keding, Lauren Laquerre and Starsha Tunstall. Acres and Laquerre both of which emerged as 1991∞ 24-17 .585 major contributors in the Wildcat lineup and were both named to the America East Conference All-Rookie team. Acres regis1992∞ 26-14 .650 tered the third highest kill total on the team with 181 kills, including an average of 1.97 kills per game. She also compiled 104 digs, 25 blocks and three assists. As for Laquerre, she ranked fourth on the roster in kills, posting a total of 169 with an average 1993∞ 18-16 .529 of 2.14 kills per game. She also compiled 41 digs in addition to notching 28 blocks. 1994∞ 10-25 .286 Five seasons ago, Hirschinger won the 2003 America East Coach of the Year after guiding the program to its sec1995∞ 13-19 .406 ond-straight conference championship with a 23-12 overall record and a 12-2 mark in conference play. UNH faced No. 1- and eventual national champion- Southern California in the team’s third appearance in the NCAA Tournament under Coach Hirsch- 1996¶ 6-26 .188 inger. 1997¶ 23-10 .697 In 2002, Hirschinger guided the ’Cats to a 23-11 overall record and the team earned its second America East title in 1998¶ 24-11 .685 school history, along with the second NCAA Tournament berth in UNH history. The Wildcats fell to Big Ten champion Minnesota in four games, becoming the first team in America East to win a game in the NCAA Tournament since the NCAA went to a 64- 1999¶ 24-12 .667 team format. 2000¶ 23-11 .676 In 1998, Hirschinger led UNH to a 24-11 overall record with a perfect 14-0 mark in America East action. The Wildcats 2001¶ 18-9 .667 had a banner season, defeating conference rival Hofstra for the school’s first-ever America East championship and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament against nationally ranked University of Arkansas. The Wildcats tallied the second-most wins in 2002¶ 23-11 .676 school history with 24 (26 in 1980). Hirschinger also earned America East Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, while 2003¶ 23-12 .657 several players garnered all-conference awards. She also guided the ‘Cats to a school-record 14 consecutive wins in 1998. 2004¶ 9-20 .310 Hirschinger took over the Wildcat program in 1996, when the team was in just its second year at the Division I varsity level since 1984. She led the young team to a 6-26 overall record, which included victories in four of the Wildcats’ final six 2005¶ 7-20 .259 matches. 2006¶ 11-16 .407 Hirschinger recorded her 500th career coaching victory Oct. 15, 2000 vs. Drexel and she posted her 100th career vic2007¶ 19-9 .678 tory at UNH on Nov. 18, 2000 vs. Northeastern in the America East semifinal match. She was appointed to the 17-member AVCA Board of Directors in May of 2005. Hirschinger also serves as Chair for the AVCA All- 2008¶ 7-21 .250 America committees. Hirschinger will serve on the regional ranking advisory committee for the NCAA. She served three years TOTALS 626-429-10 .592 as the Senior Women’s Administrator in UNH’s Athletic Department from 2001-2004. Before coming to Durham, Hirschinger spent the previous 12 seasons at Ferris State University, located in Big Rapids, • at Drake University Mich. Hirschinger registered 11 winning seasons and ended her stay at Ferris as the winningest coach in Bulldog history with a ∞ at Ferris State University 330-151 (.686) overall record. She led FSU to seven Division II postseason playoff appearances and recorded a milestone 400th ¶ at UNH victory in that span. Hirschinger was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (GLIAC) on four occasions, regional Coach of the Year three times, and led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1987 and Elite Eight appearance in 1989. She also coached nine All-Americans and two academic All-Americans while coaching the Bulldogs. Hirschinger also owns the NCAA record with 46 consecutive wins, while at FSU. In addition to her coaching duties at Ferris State, Hirschinger served as an Assistant Athletic Director and was in charge of NCAA compliance at the school. She was a member of the NCAA Division II ACTIVE NCAA VICTORIES LIST national volleyball committee, and also served on the All-America and National Golf Committees. Hirsch Coach, School Yrs. Born in West Allis, Wis., Hirschinger graduated from West Allis Central High School and attended New Mexico State University for one year. A two-sport athlete at New Mexico State, she led her team to a 10th-place finish at the National Volleyball Championships in 1975.

Associate Head Coach Stacy Barnett Stacy Barnett enters her fifth season at UNH and her second season in which she has served as Associate Head Coach. Barnett was promoted to her current position after serving three seasons as the top assistant coach with the Wildcat volleyball program. She returned to her alma mater after a successful playing career (1997-2000) as the starting setter on the school’s first America East title-winning team in 1998 and was also a part of the Wildcat coaching staff that won the 2002 America East Championship. Barnett plays an integral part in the day-to-day operations of the program with a strong work ethic and a competitive edge to help UNH get to the next level. Barnett is primarily responsible for assisting Coach Hirschinger as the team’s recruiting coordinator, coaching the Wildcat setters, developing the ‘Cats offensive systems and working with the players on skill development and technical training. Over the past three seasons, she coached Kate Uitti who was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and sits second in career assists at UNH behind only Barnett herself. Barnett is also active nationally as she serves on the assistant coaches’ committee for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Prior to UNH, Barnett served as the graduate assistant coach at the University of Delaware for two seasons under head coach Bonnie Kenny. In her second year at Delaware, Barnett helped the team to its first appearance at the Colonial Athletic Conference Championships in school history. Barnett has also coached with the Seacoast Junior Olympic Volleyball Program for seven years (1999-2006) and now sits on the board of directors. While at UNH, Barnett was the starting setter in three of her four years in Durham and she helped guide the team to the school’s first ever America East championship and NCAA appearance in 1998. During her playing tenure in Durham, the Wildcats appeared in the America East Championship match all four years. Barnett was named to the America East All-Conference Team in 1998, 1999 and 2000. She captained the Wildcats in 1998 and 2000, received the Coaches’ Award in 1997 and was part of the best four-year record in program history. Barnett earned Most Valuable Player at the 2000 annual team awards banquet. Barnett, who graduated from UNH in 2001 with a B.A. degree in Communications, was the first player in school history to post 3,000 assists and the third player in the 1,000-dig club. Barnett completed her Master’s Degree in Education from Delaware with an emphasis in Leadership in the fall of 2006. Her 3,977 career assists still stand as a school record and she also holds the top two single-season assists marks with 1,350 in 2000 and 1,291 in 1999. Barnett, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill., played club volleyball for Sky High and was MVP of the Tampa Bay National Qualifier tournament in 1996 and 1997. Hirschinger about Barnett: “Stacy has made an impact since returning to UNH volleyball. As the recruiting coordinator, we have had great success in our recruiting classes. She has a good eye for not just recruiting good players but good players with heart and attitude. Responsible of the setters she really demands a lot from them, not just as setter, but being masters of ‘how to beat the game.’ There is so much more to setting that Stacy takes to another level.”
ASSISTANT COACH ERIN WALKER Erin Walker enters her second season as a assistant for the Wildcat volleyball program. She returned to her alma mater after a successful playing career in which she helped guide the Wildcats to two-straight America East championships (2002, 2003) and a pair of NCAA appearances. Walker is primarily responsible for assisting Barnett and Hirschinger with recruiting, videotape exchange, statistical breakdown and focusing on offensive aspects of the Wildcats’ system. She is also responsible for helping organize and conduct daily practices and coaching the Wildcat hitters and blockers. Walker is enrolled in graduate school at UNH, majoring in kinesiology. A two-time captain, Walker left the program as one of the top hitters in history. She finished her career ranked third in kills with 1,280, eighth in blocks with 207 and third in attack attempts with 3,524. Walker’s 431 kills in 2003 was the fifth-best single-season mark in UNH history. Walker’s sister Jen played for the Wildcats from 1997-2000 and was part of UNH’s first America East championship in 1998. Jen Walker is the program’s career leader in blocks (513). Prior to joining the Wildcat staff, Walker played professional volleyball with SWE Volley-Team in Erfurt, Germany after being picked up in an international tour. A native of Fulton, N.Y., Walker was an America East All-Conference honorable mention in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Walker was the team’s Most Valuable Player award winner during her senior season in 2005. Walker graduated from UNH in 2005 with a B.A. degree in Sociology. Hirschinger about Walker: “I am very excited and proud to have Erin Walker as a member of the volleyball staff. We create a family atmosphere at UNH and it is such a compliment to UNH when an alumni wants to come back and coach. She will bring valuable experience from her days playing professionally in Europe. Strength and Conditioning Coach John Ciani John Ciani is entering his eighth year directing the strength and conditioning program for the UNH volleyball program. He received his Bachelorate degree in Psychology from Long Beach State and worked on his Master’s Degree in Exercise Science at the University of North Dakota. Ciani, a native of the San Diego, Calif. area, came to UNH after a stint as Assistant Strength Coach at the University of North Dakota. During his tenure at UND, Coach Ciani worked primarily with the 2001 Division II national championship football team, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams. In 2000, Ciani began his career in Strength and Conditioning at Long Beach State as a graduate assistant working with the perennial national power The 10’ Club women’s volleyball team, where he trained many All-American and national team-level volleyball players, including Misty May. ~ Jumps of 10 feet or higher ~ 1. Erin Walker 10’0” (2001-05) Under Ciani’s program, improvement is not based on how much weight is on the bar or how high an athlete can jump, but rather the health of the player and their performance on the court. The volleyball strength and conditioning program created by Ciani utilizes all facets of training, from basic strength training and Olympic Weightlifting to simple conditioning and volleyball-specific conditioning that enhances the athlete’s abilities during competition. No single training style dominates the program; Ciani uses a combination of all training techniques for the total development of the volleyball player. When asked about UNH volleyball, Ciani said, ”UNH volleyball’s commitment to strength and conditioning is second to none because of their high level of intensity, effort, and innate desire to be better than anyone else.” In addition, Ciani said, “Volleyball athletes have to be able to produce, absorb, and distribute an immense amount of power and to do this they have to physically and mentally be at their best.” In response to Ciani’s training program and coaching style, former volleyball player and member of the 1,000-kill club, Emmy Blouin, comments,“Ciani creates an incredible atmosphere that encourages a strong focus on technique and form, but also brings an intensity and enthusiasm that is unrivaled. The team really looks forward to working with him because of his dedication to personalizing each program to the play er and his eagerness for our success.”
ATHLETIC TRAINING Athletic Training at the University consists of five full-time athletic trainers, one part-time athletic trainer and two full-time interns. In addition to Jon Dana, the head athletic trainers are Renee Kleszczynski, Cindy Michaud, Glenn Riefenstahl, Dan Sedory and Barbara Hemphill. Sedory also serves as the Athletic Training Curriculum Coordinator. Students from Sedory’s program assist the Certified Athletic Trainers in all aspects of team coverage, applying lessons learned in the classroom through hands-on experience. The University has two athletic training rooms in use, one at the Whittemore Center Arena, which primarily serves the Wildcat hockey, field hockey and lacrosse teams, and one in the Field House, which is the headquarters of UNH Athletic Training and for the Wildcat volleyball program. All of the athletic training facilities utilize the currently available modalities, including muscle stimulators, ultrasound, heat, cryotherapy and hydrotherapy. The athletic training rooms also serve as the primary site for all post-injury rehabilitation.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Liz McAllister will be entering her seventh year with UNH Athletics and the Wildcat volleyball team. She is primarily responsible for daily operations, including assisting the coaching staff with recruiting, team travel and fundraising. McAllister is an integral part of the volleyball program and provides a wealth of experience in an administrative capacity. The volleyball team honored McAllister by naming her the 2007 winner of the Karl Van Asselt Assist Award for her service to the program. McAllister came to the UNH Foundation in 2000, working in Athletic Fundraising and went on to spend a year with Presidential Events and Programs. Liz McAllister She is originally from Westwood, Mass., and now resides in Rochester and Alton Bay, N.H. She has a background in nursing and also holds a degree in Paralegal Studies from McIntosh College.
MEDIA RELATIONS
Tom Wilkins, the Associate Director of Media Relations, enters his third season with the Wildcats as the primary contact for Wildcat volleyball. He served as an athletic media relations assistant with UNH in 2003-04 and comes to UNH after serving as Director of Communications for the America East conference. Prior to his work at America East, he served as Assistant Sports Information Director for two years at Quinnipiac University (Hamden, Conn.). While there, he served as the primary contact for the Bobcats’ volleyball, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, baseball and golf teams. During his first stint with UNH, Wilkins worked as the primary contact for men’s soccer and men’s basketball, and assisted with various other sports. A native of Pelham, N.H., Wilkins is a 2003 graduate of Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), cum laude with a Bachelor Tom Wilkins of Arts Degree in Communications and History. In 2006, Wilkins earned his Master’s Degree in Interactive Communication at Quinnipiac. Most recently, the volleyball program honored Wilkins as he was awarded the 2008 Karl Van Asselt Assist Award for his work with the program. The Director of Athletic Media Relations is Scott Stapin, a 1989 graduate of Northeastern. Stapin worked for six years as the assistant at Cornell University before joining the Wildcat program in the summer of 1996. The primary responsibility of the Athletic Media Relations Office is to promote the 20 varsity sports at UNH. Included in this responsibility is the coordination of relations with media members, the promotion of student-athletes for academic and athletic achievement awards, the production of recruiting and media guides and the maintenance of team and individual statistics.
ACADEMIC SERVICES
The University of New Hampshire is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the athletes give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of academic support services that are available to all student-athletes. Serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support is Joanne Maldari, a 1990 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross. Maldari holds a B.A. in Psychology-Premedical and went on to earn her Master’s degree in Counseling from Springfield College in 1993. Assisting with her duties and with student-athlete tutoring is Cathy Leach. Leach is the primary contact for the volleyball program. Leach assists Maldari and enters her seventh year of working directly with the volleyball student-athletes. Leach Cathy Leach was the Women’s Sports Information Director at UNH from 1985-1988 and served as interim Women’s Athletic Director in the 1989-1990 season before working in the admissions department from 1990-2001. Leach graduated from Springfield College.
LIFE SKILLS
UNH Athletics strongly advocates that, “Sport for sport sake is irrelevant, but sport to teach life values is sacred”- Olympian Billy Mills.The UNH Life Skills Program hopes to embody the meaning of this quote and complement the power of the athletic experience by challenging and educating student-athletes in life areas beyond the realm of athletics. The UNH Life Skills Program focuses on the following highlighted commitment areas: The Personal Development, Hazing Prevention Education, Sexual Harassment & Rape Prevention Programming (SHARPP), and Diversity/Inclusion Education.These are a few of the programs provided to student-athletes to actively educate/engage and empower them. The ‘Cats in the Community program is considered a critical component of the UNH athletic experience. This Community Service commitment area builds character through volunteerism and servant leadership; it also reminds student-athletes of the responsibility of being a role model and leader. Leadership Cathy Coakley is addressed in seminars in the student-athletes’ second and fourth years to help them evaluate their leadership style. In 2008, the volleyball program was involved in several community projects including: volunteering with New Hampshire Special Olympic basketball & volleyball, Somersworth Girls Scouts, New Heights Volleyball Camp, reading to Hampton Academy sixth graders, and hosting events such as ‘Dig For the Cure’ and Kids Club Clinics. Coakley spearheads a comprehensive educational program to enhance the personal development and welfare of UNH’s student- athletes. Coakley has an extensive career in both athletics and higher education.Most recently, she was an instructor in the sports marketing department and the coordinator of practicum and internships at James Madison University. She had similar responsibilities while at Northeastern University, as assistant women’s basketball coach. She also served as a sports marketing instructor and assistant field hockey coach at James Madison University from 2005-08 and helped guide the Dukes to a CAA field hockey championship in 2006. Prior to her tenure at JMU, Coakley worked in collegiate basketball. She started her collegiate coaching career at UNH as an assistant under Cecelia DeMarco from 1977-79. She moved on to become head coach at Fordham University from 1979-84 and served as an assistant under Joy Malchodi at Northeastern University from 1996-2000.Coakley earned her bachelor of arts in earth science and her master of arts in education administration at UNH.

2008 ~ Harte appeared in 81 games and 26 matches for the Wildcats during the 2008 season… She posted a career-high 116 digs, along with a 1.43 digs per game average… She also added 11 assists… Harte surpassed her previous career-high on six digs in a game twice as she posted 11 against Evansville on Sept. 13 and 12 against Harvard on Sept. 30… Harte also served up 12 aces and was one of Hirschinger’s most reliable servers. 2007 ~ Harte played in five matches and nine games for the Wildcats, posting six digs... UNH VOLLEYBALL... September 8, 1995~ The Wildcats play their first match after returning to varsity status. UNH is defeated by Yale and Fairfield under UNH alum Veronica O’Brien. September 10, 1995~ UNH defeats Marist, 3-2, under O’Brian for the first victory of the year. February, 1996~ Jessica Houle becomes the first student-athlete to sign a National Letter of Intent for UNH Volleyball. March 11, 1996~ Jill Hirschinger accepts the volleyball head coaching position at UNH. May 1, 1996~ Hirschinger begins work at the University.
2009 Wildcat Volleyball November 22, 1998~ The Wildcats defeat rival Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. for the school’s first ever America East title. Cari Sanders is named as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and is also named to the All-Tournament Team with teammates Stacy Barnett and Leisha Campbell. December 3, 1998~ UNH is defeated by the University of Arkansas, 3-0, in the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
May, 1996~ Judy Ray announces that the women’s volleyball program will be one of UNH’s seven ticketed sports.
April, 1999~ The Wildcats receive their championship rings at the annual awards banquet. Cari Sanders is voted Most Valuable for the 1998 season and Jen Walker is awarded the Coaches Award. Leisha Campbell and Beth Cole are announced as captains for the 1999 season.

September 8, 2000~ Jillian Ross becomes the first Wildcat in the 1,000 Kill Club with 12 kills in a 3-0 loss to Cincinnati in the Dayton Tournament. September 22, 2000~ Stacy Barnett becomes the first and only Wildcat in the 3,000 Assist Club in a 4-1 win over St. Peter’s College at the Rutgers Tournament. Jillian Ross joins the 1,000 Dig Club in the same match. October 15, 2000~ Hirschinger earns her 500th career win in a Wildcat victory over Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa. October 22, 2000~ Pack the Arena Day is born: 1,949 fans attend to watch UNH play Hofstra at Lundholm Gymnasium. UNH breaks the conference single-match attendance record and it’s first time 1,000 plus fans pack the gym for the Wildcats.

November 4, 2000~ Jen Walker tallies three blocks in a 3-1 win over Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. and became the first and only Wildcat in the 500 Block Club.

November 19, 2000~ Stacy Barnett and Jillian Ross are named to the America East All-Tournament Team. July, 2003~ Karolyn Kirby, a former Pro Beach player and indoor USA Olympic team captain, announced as assistant coach for the Wildcats. September 12, 2003~ Alyson Coler becomes the all-time school leader with 1,394 kills in a 0-3 loss to Cal Poly-SLO in Berkley, Calif. September 26, 2003~ Alyson Coler becomes the fourth member of the 1,000 Dig Club in a 3-1 loss to Brown University at Providence, R.I. October 10. 2003~ Sasha Scott becomes the fifth member of the 1,000 Dig Club in a 2-3 loss to Northeastern University. October 18, 2003~ The Wildcats top the 1,000 fan mark with 1,014 fans on “Pack the Arena Day” in a 3-0 victory over Stony Brook. November 8, 2003~ Sasha Scott breaks the single-match school record for digs with 31 at University of Maryland- Baltimore County. November 20, 2003~ At the America East awards banquet, UNH takes home three of the five major awards for the second consecutive season. Alyson Coler is named Player of the Year, Sasha Scott is named Defensive Specialist of the Year, and Hirschinger is named Coach of the Year. Katie Weidner is named to the All-Rookie team.
November 16, 2002~ Sasha Scott breaks UNH’s single season record for digs vs. the University of Maine in Orono, Maine.
November 22, 2003~ The Wildcats defeat rival Northeastern 3-1 at Lundholm Gymnasium to capture the school’s third America East Championship Title in volleyball. Alyson Coler is named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as well as to the All-Tournament team with teammates Erin Ludwig and Sasha Scott.
November 22, 2002~ UNH sweeps the three major conference awards at the America East banquet hosted by UNH. Alyson Coler is named Player of the Year, while Sasha Scott is named Defensive Specialist of the Year and Hirschinger is name Coach of the Year. Amy Dai and Karen Harrington are named to the All-Rookie team.
December 5, 2003~ UNH takes on No. 1 nationally ranked Southern California, the eventual national champions in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats give the Women of Troy all they can handle scoring at least 17 points in each game. This marked the first time the UNH volleyball program had competed against the top team in the nation.
November 24, 2002~ The Wildcats win their second America East conference championship in a 3-1 victory over Stony Brook in front of 533 fans at Lundholm Gymnasium. Lauren Knight is named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and is also named to the All-Tournament team with teammates Alyson Coler and Sasha Scott.
December 15, 2003~ Alyson Coler is the first player in the program’s history to garner Honorable Mention All-America honors.
December 5, 2002~ The Wildcats are defeated by the No. 10 nationally ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers, 3-1, at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn. UNH is the first America East team to win a game in the NCAA

November 2005~ Caitlin Dowd is named to the America East All-Rookie team. April 22, 2006~ Erin Walker is named MVP for the 2005 season, while Katie Steffens was awarded the Judy Ray Academic Excellence Award and Meaghan Estes received the Ed Jentes Coaches Award. Toni Barnas and Sarah Rehn are announced as the 2006 captains. November 5, 2006~ Sarah Rehn notches 31 kills in a 3-2 win over Maine at Lundhom Gymnasium. Rehn is one of three Wildcats to earn 30 plus kills in a single match. November 11, 2006~ Hirschinger records her 600th win in a 3-2 victory against Binghampton at Lundholm Gymnasium. Hirschinger becomes the 15th NCAA active head coach to record 600 wins. November 17, 2006~ Wildcats Kirsten Bates, Lindsay Fogarty, Alyse Lahti and Kate Uitti are named to the America East All-Rookie Team. This marks the first time that any school in the conference have garnered four athletes on the All-Rookie squad. 2009 Wildcat Volleyball September 1, 2007~ Emmy Blouin became the fifth player in program history to join the 1,000-kill club. In addition, she finished her career third on the all-time list with 1,281 kills. September 15, 2007~ Toni Barnas recorded 36 kills in a 3-2 win over Syracuse.Barnas’36 kills were the second most by any Wildcat at the time. Later that day,the Wildcats defeated Southern Methodist to capture the title at the UNH Tournament.The win over SMU was Head Coach Jill Hirschinger’s 200th win as coach at UNH. October 28, 2007~ The program helped raise over $2,500 for breast cancer during the “Dig for the Cure” event. The match was one of over 60 matches in the nation that was part of the “Dig for the Cure.” UNH played in front of a pink-splattered crowd of 503 during the event. November 11, 2007 ~ Alyse Lahti was selected America East Defensive Specialist of the Year and highlighted a group of five all-conference honorees. Kate Uitti, Kirsten Bates and Emmy Blouin were First Team selections, while Lahti and Jessica Compton were Second Team honorees. November 18, 2007 ~ Toni Barnas was selected to the All-Championship Team following the conclusion of the 2007 America East Volleyball Championship. December 7, 2007~ Assistant Coach Stacy Barnett was elevated to associate head coach after serving three seasons as the top assistant coach. February 5,2008 ~ The program hosts a celebration of life ceremony to remember the passing of former player Holly Young.Young passed away on Jan.24,2008 after a three-year battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. February 6, 2008 ~ Head Coach Jill Hirschinger was inducted into the Utah State University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. April 19, 2008 ~ Jessica Compton is named the Holly Young MVP at the 2007 banquet. Earlier in the day the program took time to honor and celebrate the memory of Holly Young by planting a tree in the Memory Walk, retiring Young’s jersey (#4) and participating in the Relay 4 Life on campus. Toni Barnas was the recipient of the Ed Jentes Coaches’ Award. Kristen Bates earned the Judy Ray Academic Excellence Award, given annually to the Wildcat with the highest GPA on the team. Liz McAllister was named the winner of the Karl Van Asselt Assist Award for her work with the program. May 13, 2008 ~ Jessica Compton is named the 2008 University of New Hampshire Woman of the Year. June 1,2008 ~ Former Wildcat Erin Walker rejoins the Wildcats as assistant coach. July 10, 2008 ~ Head Coach Jill Hirschinger was inducted into the Ferris State Hall of Fame. September 20, 2009 ~ The program battles top-ranked and defending national champion Penn State.The Nittany Lions went on to win their second-straight national championship. November 20, 2009 ~ Kirsten Bates and Lindsay Fogarty are named to the America East All-Conference second team, while Lauren Laquerre and Pauline Acres are named to the AE All-Rookie team at the conference’s annual awards banquet. April 27, 2009 ~ Kirsten Bates is named the Holly Young MVP and the Judy Ray Academic Excellence Award winner at the 2008 banquet.Pauline Acres is named the recipient of the Ed Jentes Coaches’ Award, while Kate Uitti, Sara Heldman and Kelly Harte are announced ast the 2009 tri-captains at the year-end banquet held at the Whittemore Center. In addition, Tom Wilkins is named the winner of the Karl Van Asselt Assist Award for her work with the program. May 13, 2009 ~ Volley 4 Holly is once again a success as the program raises over $1800 for the Holly Young Fund and a record 30 teams competed in the fifth-annual single day charity event.

2009 Wildcat Volleyball
D r. M a r k W. H u d d l e s t o n - P r e s i d e n t Dr. Mark W. Huddleston begins his third year as the president of the University of New Hampshire. He is the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire. He brings three decades of experience in public and private higher education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator, most recently as president of Ohio Wesleyan University. His term at UNH commenced in July 2007. Huddleston began his academic career at the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. He then joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1980, where he remained for the next 24 years. Dr. Huddleston chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. He was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2001, where he managed 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 fulltime faculty and staff, and served in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. Having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo, Huddleston went on to receive both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been active as a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an advisor in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston was raised in Syracuse and spent 24 years at the University of Delaware in various capacities. For UNH he says, the best years are yet to come—and he is happy that he will be a part of that. “I like to think I’m a really accessible guy. I see students on a regular basis when I’m wandering around campus,” Huddleston says, acknowledging that, with 12,000 more students at UNH than at Ohio Wesleyan, it will be a different experience but not one he wants to disappear. “If I had wanted to be a CEO of a large company, tucked away in an office somewhere, I would have done that,” he says. “I think people here really want a president that they see and feel is a part of the fabric of UNH. That’s very appealing to me.” Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.
Marty Scarano - Director of Athletics Marty Scarano is in the midst of his 10th year as Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. There have been over $8.5 million in capitol improvements since his hiring in the summer of 2000. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 renovation included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. Scarano brought about the completion of the $2.15 million Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility in the summer of 2000. The addition of a center-ice scoreboard and message board at the Whittemore Center was completed in 2001. In 2002, UNH athletics renovated Memorial Field along with the Bigglestone Plaza and Bremner Field on the former Upper Field. The two fields, which feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lighting, were built at a cost of $1.5 million apiece. In addition, construction was completed to enlarge and improve the women’s locker rooms in the UNH Field House. Two other major improvements to benefit UNH’s student-athletes have been the renovation of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center for Strength and Conditioning, which features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, new offices and design, and a complete overhaul of the Student-Athlete Academic Center. Scarano and the University are also in the midst of the planning and fundraising for a multi-purpose outdoor facility. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, UNH has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department was host of highly-successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009, and Manchester will once again be the site of the Northeast Regionals in 2011. UNH has had the opportunity to host two NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Fours in the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley, as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional, which took place at the Whittemore Center. This past season, men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, the men’s and women’s ski teams and gymnastics, as well as members of men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams, all competed in the NCAA postseason. With all of these initiatives and accomplishments, UNH athletics has consistently been ranked in the top 90 programs among all Division I institutions in the battle for the NACDA Directors Cup, which is well ahead of nearly all of UNH’s conference opponents. Scarano’s many accomplishments during his tenure have played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 Athletic Departments in the Country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings in March 2002. UNH’s graduation rate for athletes has maintained levels at or exceeding 90 percent, which puts it among the nation’s best in Division I. The men’s ice hockey team won the regular season Hockey East title in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008, and then advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002 and 2003. The Wildcat women’s hockey team won the Hockey East Tournament Championship for the fourth straight season in 2009, which also included Frozen Four appearances in 2006 and 2008. The women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever EAGL title in 2003, when the event was hosted at the Whitt. The volleyball team won an America East crown in 2002 and 2003 and went on to the NCAA tournament in those same seasons. The field hockey team made the NCAA’s in 2000, while women’s lacrosse made “The Big Dance” in 2004 and again in 2008. UNH football returned to national prominence and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for parts of three seasons from 2005-07, and made it to the NCAA FCS playoffs the last five years, including the quarterfinals for three consecutive seasons. Additionally, 17 coaches have won 54 Coach of the Year awards during Scarano’s tenure. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano was also awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Scarano also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-2006 and 2006-07. Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. The college’s athletic program excelled both in and out of the classroom under his supervision and six different athletic facilities received renovations, including the Schlessman Pool, Washburn Field, the Carle Weight Room and a new press box at Stewart Field. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. During Scarano’s tenure at Colorado College, the men’s ice hockey team became a regular at the NCAA men’s ice hockey championships. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have two daughters, Lynden, a freshman at UNH, and Corey, and a son, Kyle.
D o t S h e e h a n - S r. A s s o c i a t e A t h l e t i c D i r e c t o r Dot Sheehan is the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations at the University of New Hampshire. She oversees all areas that affect the external public of this Division I, 20 sport University. They include; Ticket Operations, Marketing/Promotions, Licensing for entire University, Luxury Boxes at the Whittemore Center Arena, Television/Radio, Media Relations, Special fundraising events, UNH Sports Network and the UNH Athletics Website. Sheehan has been at UNH for 11 years and is responsible for and manages over $4 million worth of revenue. Sheehan currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Manchester Sports Council, is active in the National Association of College Marketing Administrators (NACMA), and helps to raise money for many charities – Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs, Salvation Army and women’s shelters, to name a few. Prior to her time in the Wildcat Athletic Department, Sheehan has and continues to own Sheehan Sports Marketing, a consulting company that has represented professional athletes on the marketing side of their lives. She has worked with many current, professional athletes and coaches as well as companies that want to fit sports in their marketing plans. Additionally Sheehan was part of the initial consulting group that opened the Ted Williams Museum and Hitter’s Hall of Fame in Citrus Hills, Florida and instrumental in raising over $650,000 in corporate sponsorships. She also created and managed the Eric Montross Father’s Day Basketball Camp in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a first of its kind - where 50% of the campers were terminally ill children. Proceeds from the camp built a teen recreation lounge in the new Children’s Hospital. Sheehan was one of the first female “agents” in sports and has continued to work with women whose goal is to make sports their career. Sheehan is also a UNH alum.

The University of New Hampshire was originally founded as a land-grant college whose mission was to shape and educate citizenry among the state’s farmers, business people and engineers. Today, the University is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university serving a growing undergraduate student body of about 12,000 and a graduate population of 3,000 in addition to 600 full-time faculty members, 92% of which have earned their doctorate degree. The university has grown into a top public research university occupying 2,600 acres of classic living and learning space, while still maintaining the look and feel of a New England liberal arts college with a faculty dedicated to teaching. UNH’s student to faculty ratio registers at 18:1 with 84% of its classes having 50 students or less. History As one of the most prestigious institutions in the Northeast, the University of New Hampshire has always been recognized as a leader in education and research, spanning all fields of study and uniting them through interdisciplinary programs, labs, farms, theatres, research centers, and libraries. Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Mills Hall Arts, UNH was among the early state institutions of higher education whose formation was made possible by federal government land grants. The purpose for the grants was to establish colleges that would serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. New Hampshire College was originally situated in Hanover, N.H. Here it was in connection with Dartmouth College before moving to Durham in 1893 after Benjamin Thompson bequeathed land and money to further the development of the college. The state legislature then granted its new charter as the University of New Hampshire in 1923. The University hosts nearly 550 international students from more than 40 countries and boasts a population of students from 49 states. Campus In the last few years, several of the athletic facilities have received major upgrades and improvements. In September of 2001, the University completed a new $2.15 million track and field facility. The Jerry Azumah Performance Center, a strength and conditioning facility located in the UNH Field House, was dedicated on July 8, 2003. UNH athletics has also added three outdoor artificial fields, Memorial Field, Bremner Field and Cowell Stadium. Lundholm Gymnasium has received some major overhauls, including a new playing surface, new lights, a new sound system, scoreboard and a brand new bleacher system in the summer of 2007. Most recently, UNH completed a renovation of the Paul Sweet Oval indoor track complete with a new state-of-the-art surface, improved lighting and an overall facelift. In addition to the incredible improvements of its athletic facilities, the University has upgraded and renovated a large part of its academic campus as well. Most recently, Thompson Hall, one of the standing historical landmarks of the University, has been beautifully refurbished and restored. The Holloway Commons University also completed a $52 million renovation of Kinsbury Hall, adding 6,000 square feet of student project space for students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, as well as a $4.5 revamp of Hewitt Hall to expand the School of Health and Human Services. In addition, the new 120,000 square foot Biological Sciences Building, Rudman Hall and the Spaulding Life Sciences Renovation project now provide state-of-the-art teaching and researching laboratories. The University also spent $15 million to complete Morse Hall, a new science and engineering building as well as $8.2 million to modernize the Memorial Union Building. This revision to the existing student union building consisted of several upgrades including top kitchen and dining facilities, two theaters, student mailboxes, lounges and meeting rooms, as well as additional retail spaces such as the University Bookstore. The University has also completed construction of the new dining facility on Main Street, Holloway Commons, as well as the renovation of the Dimond Library. In November of 1995, construction of the $27 million Recreation and Sport Complex reached completion. The new Whittemore Center includes a state-ofthe-art 6,500 to 7,500 seat arena for hockey, concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreational sports facility within the structure which had housed the old Snively Arena. Combining the atmosphere of a small New England liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a major research university, the University of New Hampshire is a place where all students can find or create their own niche and succeed. While the University offers an extremely broad academic base with an inspiring Lundholm Gymnasium faculty, it also provides students with thousands of opportunities to get involved, either through athletics, campus recreation, student life, Campus or research. The University is a dynamic community that not only challenges its members academically but also expands their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and leads to incredible growth as students, faculty, staff, and as a community.
