Wildcat Gymnastics
Wildcat Gymnastics program, has put squads together that have produced tremendous success both on and off the mats, and this season promises more of the same. In 2010, Goodspeed led her team to a season-high score of 195.2 and key victories over such East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rivals as North Carolina State, Maryland and Pittsburgh. The Wildcats registered a fourth-place finish at the EAGL Championship, where the team posted an impressive mark of 194.700. The Wildcats advanced to the NCAA University Park Regional at Penn State University and concluded the campaign ranked 30th in the nation after placing fourth in the NCAA competition with a score of 194.8. Goodspeed saw 12 of her gymnasts named NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans and 15 named to the EAGL All-Academic squad. Five members of the 2010 UNH women’s gymnastics team garnered All-EAGL honors, with four Wildcats earning places on the first team in their respective events: Danielle Reibold (bars), Taryn LaFountain (beam), Chelsea Steinberg (beam) and Julie Sauchuk (floor). Reibold (beam), Steinberg (all-around, floor, vault) and Helena Diodati (vault, bars) notched second-team honors. Goodspeed’s successful track record includes five NCAA Northeast Region Head Coach of the Year awards, most recently in 2008. Previous honors were bestowed in 2003, 2001, 1994 and 1991. In 2003, Goodspeed was named the EAGL Coach of the Year. Several of Goodspeed’s athletes and teams have been part of UNH history-making performances. In 2006, senior captain Amanda Hall was the Northeast Regional Floor Champion and took 3rd in the All-Around. This qualified her for the NCAA National Championship, making her the seventh individual from UNH to earn such high honors. At the Championship, her score of 9.8 on vault narrowly missed qualifying her as an All-American. During the 2005 campaign, Amanda Hall and Mariana Peña Trestini scored a 9.975 on the floor exercise in the regular season, setting the new UNH record. In 2005 postseason action, Vanessa Berrios shared the Northeast Regional Balance Beam title with a score of 9.85, earning her a spot at the NCAA National Championship as the sixth individual to represent UNH. The 2003 Wildcats captured their firstever EAGL Championship with a UNH school record team total of 196.750. At the same competition, Tara Phillips vaulted perfectly, scoring her first ever 10.0, permanently etching her name among the University’s all-time greats. Goodspeed has guided the Wildcats to four ECAC Championships, appearances in 29 NCAA Regional Championships and two AIAW Regional Championships (prior to NCAA sponsorship), while building a 484-256-2 record. The ‘Cats won the 1994 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and competed at the NCAA Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. UNH finished the season as the 12th-ranked team in the country. In addition to the team qualification to the national championship, individuals have represented UNH at the national championship 11 different times during Goodspeed’s 31 years at the reins. “It has always been our goal to help each student-athlete strive to reach her full potential and accomplish this in a positive atmosphere. When this occurs, the team is successful and it’s fun for everyone,” Goodspeed states. Goodspeed earned a doctorate from the School of Education at Boston University in 1984. She has used this education to enhance the quality of the experience of practicing and competing. Her dissertation involved development and implementation of a comprehensive sport psychology program for female gymnasts. Aspects of the program are incorporated into the training plan at UNH. “We try to focus on those things over which we have control, including our own response to and perception of stressful situations. Training is intense and our team members are dedicated to each other and to the goal of achieving excellence,” Goodspeed says. Much of the strength and success of the UNH gymnastics program lies with the stability and dedication of the coaching staff. Goodspeed is married to associate head coach Ed Datti
(28th year), and together, with additional assistants and support staff, they have developed one of the most respected programs in the Northeast. That staff has added 2000 United States Olympic Bronze Medal winner Kristen Maloney as a first-year assistant coach and new student assistant coach Taryn Archambault, a three-year performer at UNH. A collegiate competitor from 1970-74 at Springfield College, Goodspeed captained the team her senior year and was a member of two AIAW National Championship teams. She was assistant coach for her alma mater in 197475 when the team placed 4th at the National Championship. Goodspeed was inducted into the Springfield College Hall of Fame in October 2002. She has served as treasurer of the National Coaches Association and served on the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Committee. She was head coach of California State-Northridge for two years and was also a business manager and coach at the Montvale Gymnastics Club. Goodspeed holds a master’s degree from Springfield and earned a doctorate in sports psychology from Boston University. She and Ed have two daughters, 21-year-old Samantha and 17-year-old Brianna. Both are involved in competitive volleyball. Samantha, who graduated with highest honors from Oyster River High School in 2007 and completed her H.S. volleyball career by making the NHIAA All-State team, is in her senior year at Keene State College, majoring in environmental studies. She has been a four-year member of the Keene State volleyball team and captain for the last two seasons. Her Owls won the 2010 ECAC Tournament for the first time in school history. Speaking of championships, Brianna was the star libero for the Oyster River team that captured the 2010 NHIAA Division II championship -its first title since 1996. A four-year starter and a two-time captain, Bri has earned All-State team honors four years in a row and was named the D-II Volleyball Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010. Goodspeed is a native of Kohler, Wisconsin.

1994 NC AA TEA M QUALIFIER~28 NC AA REGIONAL TEAMS~9 NC AA QUALIFIERS Ed Datti enters his 30th year with the program, 28th as a full-time coach. The Associate Head Coach is known as one of the top assistants nationally and was the co-recipient of the 2010 EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year. He received the 2008 NCAA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year award, an honor he also garnered in 1994. He was also recognized five times as co-recipient of that award (2006, 2003, 2001, 1997 and 1991). Datti is highly respected by his colleagues for his skills as a strong technical coach and outstanding spotter. UNH head coach Gail Goodspeed states: “Obviously, I am a little biased, but Ed is one of the best spotters in the nation. He can anticipate when a gymnast is in need of assistance and can react faster than seems possible. He also has the unique ability of knowing exactly how much assistance is needed. A great balance is created with his technical expertise and spotting ability to help all of our team members continue to improve and upgrade their skills.” At UNH, Datti is responsible for the majority of the recruiting and continues to bring top gymnasts to the UNH campus. He is the director of a highly successful summer camp and initiated a community class program. Datti also co-teaches a movement and gymnastics exploration class for the kinesiology department with assistant coach Kristen Maloney. Datti is the former owner and head coach of the Montvale School of Gymnastics in Woburn, Mass. This was one of the first private gymnastics schools in Massachusetts and he coached several top USGF gymnasts during the 10 years of operating the club. Before his Montvale affiliation, Datti taught at Saxonville Elementary School in Framingham (Mass.) and coached the Framingham South High School girls gymnastics team. A 1971 graduate of Springfield (Mass.) College, Datti was a four-year competitor on the gymnastics squad. In his senior year, he was team captain and earned All-America honors in floor exercise. He is originally from Framingham, Mass.

Athletic Trainer
Kristen Maloney is a former Olympic gymnast who was part of the 2000 United States’ bronze-medal winning team in Sydney, Australia, Maloney was also a member of the 2001, 2003 and 2004 NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins women’s gymnastics team. Maloney, who graduated with a degree in psychology in 2005, is serving in her first season as an assistant coach with the University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team. Maloney coordinates the paperwork for numerous aspects of the program and is the primary choreographer. She co-teaches the movement and gymnastics exploration class with Associate Head Coach Ed Datti. She also is responsible for the UNH community gymnastics class program. Maloney competed for the USA Gymnastics national team from 1994-2000. In addition to capturing a team bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics, she was the 1998-99 national champion, a 1999 Sullivan Award nominee and was the 1998 USA Gymnastics Sportswoman of the Year. She captured a gold medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games. While at UCLA, Maloney made an amazing comeback from multiple leg surgeries and a two-year hiatus to earn 2004 All-America honors on bars (first-team) and in the all-around, vault and beam (second team). She placed second on bars at the NCAA Championships, recording a meet-high-tying 39.725 in the Super Six all-around to help the Bruins claim the NCAA team title. She was the NCAA Southeast Regional co-champion on vault and beam and the Pac-10 co-champion on balance beam, ranking fourth in the nation with an RQS of 9.925. Maloney was an honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic selection and received the UCLA C.H.A.M.P.S. Inspirational Award. In 2005, Maloney spent 10 weeks as the top-ranked gymnast. She became the first UCLA gymnast ever -and only the fourth gymnast in NCAA history- to score a perfect 10 on all four events. She won first place in the allaround, vault, beam, and floor at the Pac-10s, where she Maloney (third from left) also was awarded Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year. Maloney was named the NCAA West Regional Gymnast of the Year and placed 1st on vault, beam, and floor and 2nd in the all-around. At the 2005 NCAA championships Maloney placed 2nd in the all-around and 1st on vault and beam. Later that year Maloney was awarded the 2004-05 Honda Award for gymnastics, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate female gymnast. “The phenomenal experiences as a competitor for both the collegiate and international scene, as well as Kristen’s career with Cirque du Soleil, make her a tremendous role model,” head coach Gail Goodspeed says. “Her technical expertise is unmatched, and her fierce competitive nature will help UNH compete with the best.” Most recently, Maloney was a teacher and gymnastics instructor in New York and at Parkettes Gymnastics in Allentown, Pa. She previously performed for Cirque du Soleil as an acrobat for the act of power track and as the bird and nymph main characters. A native of Pen Argyl, Pa., Maloney was inducted into the Pen Argyl Area High School Hall of Fame in September 2010.
Dan Sedory serves as the athletic trainer for the UNH gymnastics team. He is entering his 23rd season with the gymnastics squad and is an integral member of the coaching staff. Sedory, a Pittsburgh native, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Physical Education (1982) and received his Masters in Athletic Training from the University of Arizona (1984). Sedory is currently a clinical associate professor of athletic training at UNH. Since 1988 he has also served as the curriculum director for athletic training within the University’s department of kinesiology. With Sedory’s extensive work and commitment to enrichment, it has earned the distinction of being a CAATE Accredited Sedory with athletic training students Emily Athletic Training Program. In 2006, he was honored for Whitney (left) and Alé Bakovic his contributions by receiving the “Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award” from NATA, awarded to role models for future leaders in the athletic training Dan Sedory 23rd season at UNH profession. This award came shortly after Sedory was named New Hampshire’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer of the Year for 2006. Also on his list of accolades is the NATA Athletic Trainer Service 2006 NH Most Distinguished Athletic Award, which he received in 2001. Trainer Award 2006 NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Sedory served as an athletic trainer for the United States Olympic Committee Medical Staff at the U.S. Olympic Festival in Los Angeles in 1991 and with the Summer World University Games in 1993. Taryn Archambault, a senior at UNH majoring in Sociology and Education, enters her first season as the gymnastics student assistant coach. Archambault was a three-year performer for the Wildcats, twice earning EAGL All-Academic Team honors (2009, 2010). Archambault established a personal-best 9.675 on vault versus North Carolina State on March 12, 2010. Prior to attending UNH, the Tewksbury, Mass., native was coached by Jessica Wilkey at Wilkey’s Gymnastics Center and graduated from Lowell High School.

John Ciani enters his ninth year as the strength and conditioning coach for the women’s gymnastics team. The two basic goals of the strength and conditioning department are injury prevention and performance enhancement. The first goal, injury prevention, revolves around reducing the likelihood of the athlete getting injured during meets or practice by training the athlete as a unit and pinpointing weaknesses in the gymnast that need to be strengthened. The second goal, performance enhancement, centers on making the athlete a better athlete. This is done by educating the athlete on a wide range of training, from Olympic-style weight lifting to teaching the athlete how to move more efficiently while running or during an agility drill. The strength and conditioning program plays a vital role in the success of UNH gymnastics. The athletes train virtually year-round in order to perform at their highest level throughout the regular season. The UNH gymnastics strength and conditioning program is a comprehensive training program that involves Olympic-style weight lifting, traditional strength training, plyometrics, agility/quickness training and sport-specific conditioning. Ciani, his wife Angela and son Brennan live in Kittery, Maine.
Wildcats in the Weight Room The Jerry Azumah Performance Center opened its doors in the summer of 2003 to UNH student-athletes. The monetary donation by Azumah, a former Pro Bowler with the Chicago Bears of the NFL, allowed the UNH athletic department to overhaul its existing strength and conditioning center. The massive workout facility, which was originally 4,000 square feet, grew to over 6,000 square feet in size during a summer renovation in 2009. The renovated center features 5,000 pounds of Olympic weights, 7,000 pounds of dumbbells, 14 Powerlift platform stations, 12 Hammer strength machines and an additional 15,000 pounds of weights. Other renovations included new offices for the Director and Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Practice Facility
The practice facility, which allows the UNH gymnasts to train and perform at the highest level, is heralded as one of the safest and most efficient training spots in New England.The UNH coaching staff has worked hard to ensure that the 8,500 square foot gymnasium has been well maintained and updated to meet the highest standards. The loose foam and solid foam pits, the two tumble tracks, the overhead spotting rigs, a rod tumbling strip, and all of the most updated gymnastics apparatus and matting make this a facility that continues to attract top-notch athletes. Recently, the coaching staff added an instant view playback system for all four events. This allows immediate feedback and enhances the training for the visual learner. During the Holiday break in December 2010, facility lighting was upgraded to further enhance safety while providing a more energy-efficient system. All the necessary tools are in place for the best collegiate gymnasts in the country to train and continue to learn new skills. Two sites play host for the home gymnastics competitions, Lundholm Gymnasium and the Whittemore Center Arena. The Whittemore Center seats over 6,000 fans for gymnastics, while Lundholm Gymnasium seats approximately 2,500 fans for gymnastics. In 2010, Lundholm Gym was the host site for the EAGL Championship Meet. Previously, the Whittemore Center has been the host site of the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and the EAGL Championship Meet, as well as the Fox Run Invitational. In 2003, the Whittemore Center entertained an EAGL record-breaking crowd to witness some of the highest-caliber gymnastics action ever seen on the Seacoast. The UNH gymnastics program continues to expand and improve its training and competitive facility with its commitment to excellence. In 1994, one of the first groups to work all four years in the training facility won the ECAC conference championship, placed first in the NCAA Regional Championship, and went on to qualify for the NCAA National Championship, ranking 12th in the country. The team has continued its strong tradition of excellence, and set a new team and conference scoring record in 2003 with a total team score of 196.750 while winning the EAGL Championship.

In Memory In November 2000, Katie Baldwin, a 20-year-old University of New Hampshire junior gymnast from Dover, Pa., passed away from a pulmonary embolism. Katie was an exceptional person who touched many lives. She was an outstanding athlete, scholar and friend. When everyone thinks of Katie, they always see her smile. It seems to be a smile that no one can, or will, ever forget. Katie was an NACGC/W Academic All-American both of her years and part of the EAGL All-Academic Team in both seasons. She made Dean’s List all four semesters and earned a grade point average of 3.81. She was a Dean’s Scholarship Award recipient and also a UNH academic athletic achievement award recipient in both 1999 and 2000. She was a three-event gymnast for UNH with career highs of 9.75 on bars, 9.575 on beam and 9.6 on the floor. She was named the team’s Most Improved Gymnast in 1999.
Katie Baldwin Expression Award Following each home meet, the UNH gymnastics staff will select a gymnast to receive the Katie Baldwin Expression Award. The 2010 winners included Julie Sauchuk, Katie Lawrence, Chelsea Steinberg and Helena Diodati.
Academic Excellence Award The Academic Excellence Award was established in 2002 and is awarded in memory of Katie Baldwin to the gymnast with the highest grade point average. Freshman Courtney Connors (Buffalo, N.Y.), who compiled a 3.75 GPA, was named the 2010 recipient. Connors was also named to the NACGC/W Scholastic All-American Team and the EAGL All-Academic Team. She recorded a personal best of 9.825 on vault and 9.75 on floor, achieving First Team EAGL All-Tournament distinction in vault and Second Team in floor. Past recipients include Michelle Harley (2002), Mellory Giberson (2003), Heather Moore (2004), Lindsay Kovary (2006), two-time honoree Rebekah Porter (2005, 2007), Katie Caliendo (2008) and Courtney Connors Danielle Reibold (2009).

Wolstein Center, Cleveland, Ohio Host: Kent State University Above is a map showing the regional alignment. In an effort to promote parity between regions, the University of Michigan is included in the Northeast Region. Regionals: The top 36 teams based on the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) will be selected for the regional championships. A regional meet - consisting of six teams and five all-around competitors (who are not already on one of the six qualifying teams) and one individual specialist per event (who has a minimum RQS of 9.4) - is conducted in each of the six regions to determine the national championship participants. To obtain the RQS, each team selects its top six team scores with at least three of those scores from away meets, tossing out the highest score and averaging the remaining five. The top 18 teams will be seeded, and from there regional competition spots will be filled in order of regional qualifying score. Note that each region will continue to be represented but will not have a guaranteed minimum number of teams represented in the championships. Teams will be placed in the closest geographic site, as much as possible. Regional hosts shall remain in their respective regions. Nationals: The national championship consists of 12 teams and 12 all-around competitors. The top two teams and the top two all-around winners from each regional meet will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, each event winner may advance to the national championship (in that event only) if she is not already part of an advancing team or an all-around qualifier.

2010 Review/2011 Preview
The 2010 Wildcat Gymnastics squad continued the tradition of excellence by qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championship and finishing on a high note as one of only a handful of teams to hit all 24 routines. This was the 28th time the Wildcat Gymnastics squad competed as a team in the 29 years the NCAA has sponsored the event. The NCAA Regional competition was one of many highlights for the 2010 team. Successfully completing all 24 routines with no falls is the best a team can do at any given competition, and doing it in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Penn State finalized the team’s goal of competing all year with “No Regrets”. The Wildcats broke the 195 scoring mark four times on their way to a 16-6 record. Highlights for the year included UNH capturing its own Invitational meet, the second competition of the year, with a 195.0 score, defeating Ball State, Utah State, and Yale. The success continued through the regular season with victories over conference rivals Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Maryland, North Carolina State and George Washington. Along the way UNH also posted wins over Brown, William & Mary and Southern Connecticut, as the ‘Cats only struggled during three regular-season meets. Losses to Missouri, Michigan State and Texas Woman’s found the team lacking in consistency and not performing up to their potential. Overall, the 2010 meet season was a great success and prepared the team for a run at the EAGL Conference title. UNH hosted the EAGL Championship meet, which was exciting from start to finish. The Wildcats started strong and had the lead in the competition going into the last event, but the balance beam performance ended the dream of repeating the 2003 accomplishment of capturing the conference title at home. Some major wobbles and a couple of falls put this goal out of reach. The conference features some of the top teams in collegiate gymnastics, and it did not take much to go from first to fourth in one rotation. Returning to form and hitting all 24 routines just two weeks later at the NCAA Regional meet erased some of the disappointment and allowed the 2010 team to accomplish its goals. The senior class’s leadership and performances stood out all season. The class of 2010 had high aspirations and worked all four years to finish their gymnastics careers with “No Regrets.”The team was led by the dynamic and solid duo of Helena Diodati and Taryn LaFountain. Helena hit every vault during the year and stuck her final vault at the NCAA regional meet to tie teammate Katie Caliendo for 7th. Diodati missed only one bar routine all year with her high score being a 9.925, tying her for No. 3 all-time in the University’s record books in that event. LaFountain anchored the beam team and led the floor squad with a season-high floor score of 9.925, the 6th-best individual score in school history. This duo competed all four years on two events with great success and concluded their Wildcat careers by joining the prestigious 1,000 career point club. The rest of the senior class was just as critical to the Wildcats’ success. Diane Grey competed all year on bars and most of the year on vault, while Kelsey Alwin was a top performer on vaulting for the second half of

the season, and Keeley Smith added depth on three events and inspiration throughout. Julie Sauchuk was a strong performer on beam and also entered the floor exercise alltime record book with a 9.925, tied for 6th-highest. Having six seniors continue to train toward their full potential is a testament to the strength of the UNH program, and all of them will be tough to replace; however, those graduates will represent the University at a very high level in their chosen professions. Along with the loss of these six seniors, UNH faced the resignation of Lindsey Bruck, an excellent assistant coach. Bruck missed the thrill of competing herself and is pursuing opportunities to perform for Cirque du Soleil. We wish her the best of luck. New assistant coach Kristen Maloney joins the staff for the challenges of the 2010 – 2011 season. Her career accolades are too numerous to list, but they are undoubtedly highlighted with a team bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics. She competed for UCLA from 2001-2005 and was part of NCAA National Championship teams in ’01, ’03 and ’04. Maloney won the 2005 NCAA individual title on vaulting and balance beam and received the 2005 Honda award for the top female collegiate gymnast in the Nation. As a member of the USA Gymnastics National team from 2002-05, Maloney’s personal competitive experiences are outstanding. She was the1998-99 National Champion, a 1999 Sullivan Award nominee and the 1998 USA Gymnastics Sportswoman of the Year. Kristen’s remarkable experiences as both a collegiate and International competitor combined with her career with Cirque du Soleil make her a terrific role model. Her unmatched technical expertise and fierce competitive nature will buoy UNH’s bid to compete with the best in the nation all season. The 2011 senior class includes three talented gymnasts who all continue to improve and train at the highest level. Senior Co-Captains Katie Lawrence and Chelsea Steinberg continue the focus on positive teamwork and a strong work ethic to accomplish team goals. With the year of ‘11 as the inspiration for the motto “One Team…One Dream” they hope to lead the team to its best year yet. Steinberg maintains the team’s top spot on balance beam (PB-9.875) and was the only all-around for the 2010 season. She topped the 39 mark three times, won the all-around in 5 out of 11 meets and just barely missed a trip to the National Championship as the 3rd individual all-around (two individual all-arounds qualify to the National Championship after the top two qualifying teams.) Katie Lawrence is a mainstay on beam (PB-9.875) and bars (PB-9.8) as well as striving to add depth to vaulting as she trains to learn a Yurchenko full. Senior Katie Caliendo is a dynamic three-event competitor with personal bests of 9.85 on vaulting, bars and beam. She should be one of the top vaulters with an explosive Yurchenko full. Training a full-in as her first tumbling pass on floor has escalated an already great routine. The challenge will be to compete this skill in as many meets as possible to gain consistency for the championship meets. The junior class is back in full swing and is led by Ali Carr and Danielle Reibold. Carr is in contention for an all-around spot this season. Vaulting (PB9.85) and Bars (PB-9.95) are
the competitive events where she has excelled. Her 9.95 on bars tied her for the all- time best on that event. Have no doubt, her beam and floor are equally impressive and the coaching staff hopes to have her in the lineup on all four events. She has an elite look on beam and floor and could be a standout on these events as well. Reibold is ready to compete as one of the best on three events, bars (PB-9.85), beam (PB-9.875) and floor (9.75), with hopes to return as all-around when vaulting gets back to form. Reibold is one of the most consistent and dependable performers on bars and beam with a strong shot at the lineup on floor. Tasia Percevecz and Kate McGeever should make an impact on the floor lineup. Percevecz (PB-9.775) saw action on floor in 2010 and consistently hit her routine. She has upgraded her tumbling and is training well on vaulting and bars as well. Her Yurchenko full on vaulting could help greatly with the depth on this event. McGeever is focusing primarily on floor exercise and performs excellent front tumbling with a front layout 2/1 full to open. All of her passes are high level and she could break into the floor lineup this season. The sophomore class has returned more experienced and stronger than ever. Leading the way will be Austyn Fobes, a talented former elite gymnast who saw limited but successful competition on floor (PB-9.85) and vault (9.825) last year due to a nagging back injury. She came back this fall in great shape, ready to establish herself as a premier all-around gymnast. Fobes has beautiful execution and amplitude in everything she does. She is ready to make her mark and will bring some of the highest level of difficulty seen in collegiate gymnastics. Courtney Connors had a successful debut on floor (PB-9.75) and vault (PB-9.825) for UNH last year and will continue to contribute on those events. Dianna Kurowyckyj was solid on beam (PB-9.75) last year, but has run into some health problems this fall that set her back. She is improving daily and will hopefully be able to get back to the lineup this season. Jen Aucoin has recovered from major shoulder surgery during the summer before her freshman campaign, which forced her to spend most of last year rehabbing. She is back working well and should be a huge contributor on bars. Aucoin is also very strong on the other events, especially beam, and has the quickness and power to be a factor this season. Becca Marrama should challenge for a spot in the floor lineup. Tweaking her combination tumbling should allow her to be one of the higher scoring floor competitors.

The freshman class has come to campus with enthusiasm and great potential, with six athletes joining the squad ready to make an impact. Hannah Barile brings one of the best vaults in the country, a pike Quervo (front handspring - ½ twist to a pike back flip), which placed her second at the Junior Olympic Nationals last year. She will also be strong on floor exercise with some of the highest tumbling difficulty on the team and will have a great shot at competing in the all-around. Jannelle Minichiello entered the fall with an ankle injury she suffered this summer, but has been training well and should be able to make a full recovery. Minichiello is a solid beam performer, but her best event is floor exercise where her “always present” smile and her dynamic tumbling will make her a favorite. Minichiello is also a strong contender for the bar lineup. Jillian Hudson has a long and distinguished Junior Olympic career and should be able to challenge for a lineup spot on any event, with her best event being vault. The pleasant surprise of the fall was Erin Machado, who spent the preseason expanding her skill level and has the athletic ability to learn a great deal. She shows promise on floor with great tumbling ability and on beam with fight and determination. Machado also has the power to be a solid vault competitor once she raises her difficulty level. Danielle Bonner has a very competitive beam routine with loads of difficulty and should be challenging on that event. She is also working on a new dismount for bars and has ability on that event as well. Carly Stote started the fall setting the bar very high with her work ethic. She unfortunately suffered a knee injury that will sideline her for the beginning of the season, but she has shown she is very capable of making a strong comeback. No one will outwork her in the gym or in the rehab process. Carly is a powerful gymnast and will be one to watch in the future. The Wildcats will have to be at their best with the challenging 2011 schedule, featuring many of the country’s top teams. Among the opponents invading Lundholm Gym this year: 9th-ranked Michigan on Feb. 5, Michigan State, Alaska, and Brown at the UNH Invitational on Feb. 12, plus Rutgers, Central Michigan and Bridgeport also visit UNH this season for home competitions. The away schedule has the Wildcats visiting some powerhouse schools, including Maryland, 14th-ranked Penn State and Pittsburgh in the early part of the season. Later in the year the UNH Gymnasts will compete at West Virginia, where 3rdranked Florida and George Washington also challenge the‘Cats in a quad meet Feb. 20. UNH also travels to Bridgeport, No. 12 LSU and the 19th-ranked University of Arizona, where Texas Woman’s and BYU will also be part of a quad meet March 11. The EAGL Championships will be held at George Washington University on March 19. Once again the EAGL conference will hold a very competitive meet, as the league continues to provide some of the most entertaining and exciting gymnastics in the collegiate ranks. Qualification to the NCAA Regional meet will be a straight formula for the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) counting the top 6 scores, with at least three of those from away meets, dropping the highest score and averaging the remaining five. When the RQS is determined, the top 36 teams will qualify for the NCAA Regional meets with the top 18 seeded into the six sites. The NCAA National Championship will feature the top two teams from each of the Regional meets, the top two individual all-arounders who are not part of an advancing team, and any individual Regional event winners who are not part of a team or an all-around qualifier. The 2011 Championship will be held at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 15-17. The theme of “One Team – One Dream” for 2011 puts emphasis on every individual stepping up to her full potential to help achieve team goals. Success throughout a competitive regular season, a top finish in EAGL and a return to the NCAA Regional Championship with a goal of qualifying to the National Championship are all part of that dream: one day at a time in the gym, one competitive routine at a time throughout the year. The number 1 has a lot of meaning for this Wildcat Gymnastics Squad. Each one of them will be working hard to make this a great year for The University of New Hampshire Gymnastics Team.

The ‘Cats 2011 vaulting squad has the ability to be a strong and highscoring group. Seven gymnasts compete 10.0 vaults with two more in training. Five of the returning vaulters have scored 9.7 or higher and two newcomers have the ability to score high on this event.
While some great talent graduated last spring, the veterans have really stepped up. With Lawrence, Danielle Reibold, Carr and Fobes back, the team continues to enjoy high-flying release moves and consistent routines. Also look for Steinberg and Aucoin to contribute more frequently to the bar lineup. The ability of the freshmen to step in and compete solid routines will add much-needed depth to this event.
Austyn Fobes has a very dynamic Yurchenko full (round off onto the board, back handspring, back layout full). Look for her to be one of the top vaulters this year. SV=10.0 Katie Caliendo adds another high-flying Yurchenko full to the lineup. Katie will be one of the most consistent vaulters and is training hard to “stick” (land without moving) her vault. SV=10.0 Chelsea Steinberg performs a Yurchenko layout with a half twist. She has become another solid and powerful competitor for the Wildcats. SV= 10.0 Hannah Barile is one of the newcomers and does a unique pike Q uer vo vault (front handspring, half twist back pike salto off ). Her amplitude is excellent and she has the potential to score high if her landing is clean. SV= 10.0 Courtney Connors will be a more consistent competitor for the Wildcats with a Yurchenko full. She is cleaning up her form and has the ability to stick this vault. SV=10.0 Jillian Hudson is another newcomer with a 10.0 vault. This is Jillian’s strongest event and she will compete a Yurchenko full. She will have to adjust to the collegiate rules of only one vault per competitor and make every vault count. SV= 10.0
Fobes is a very powerful bar worker with her high-flying Tkachev, Pak salto, and double layout dismount. She has the ability to be the top bar worker with two major releases. Danielle Reibold swings beautifully on this event with a blind full Geinger overshoot combination. She continues to be clean and consistent for the Wildcats on arguably her best event. Carr is another beautiful bar-swinger for the Wildcats. Her Jaeger and double layout dismount are impressive and exciting to watch. Lawrence contributes another exciting release move with her Jaeger. She also performs one of the highest level dismounts with a ½ in – ½ out. (double back with a ½ twist in each flip). Aucoin is a dynamic bar worker. She will provide a consistent routine for the Wildcats. She is working hard to regain her Hindorff (free hip reverse hecht) put aside due to injury last year. Her double layout dismount maintains beautiful lines with great amplitude. Steinberg keeps improving on this event. As her Tkachev and double layout dismount continue to improve she has the ability to break into the lineup again this season. Jannelle Minichiello has a chance to make this lineup with her solid bar routine and difficult double front dismount. Danielle Bonner and Hudson both have the ability to be in the bar lineup. Bonner has an impressive Jaeger and Hudson has solid pirouetting combinations.
Ali Carr looks to return to the vaulting lineup. She competed a strong Yurchenko full during her first season at UNH and the Wildcats look forward to her return to the lineup. SV=10.0 Tasia Percevecz can break into the lineup as she works on making her Yurchenko full more consistent. SV=10.0 Jen Aucoin is also looking to break into the lineup. Jen has competed a ½ on ½ off front tuck vault (SV 9.8) and is hoping to pike (SV 9.9) or lay it out for a 10.0 start value. Current SV=9.8 Katie Lawrence has just started to work a Yurchenko 1/1 and is quickly picking up this skill. Look for her to possibly contribute as the season progresses. (SV=10.0)

Floor Exercise
Balance beam continues to be a highlight for the UNH Wildcats. Steinberg and Fobes bring outstanding routines to anchor the lineup. Lawrence, Caliendo, and Reibold are also experienced beam workers who can bring in high marks. With Carr, Minichiello, and Erin Machado challenging for spots, this squad, once again, has the potential to shine in this key event.
Always the crowd pleaser, this year’s floor group will not disappoint. Solid and exciting returners Fobes, Steinberg and Caliendo have great experience in this event. They will be fun to watch again this year. Consistent gymnasts Connors, Reibold and Percevecz should add to the impressive lineup. Newcomers Barile and Machado will be fun to watch as they break into collegiate competition.
Steinberg’s confidence and exciting tumbling skills make her stand out on this event. She performs a very quick rhythm that leaves little room for error. As one of the most consistent beam workers, she again has the ability to be one of the top performers in the EAGL conference.
Fobes brings her powerful and great execution to an exciting floor routine. She opens with a full twisting double back and ends with a difficult double pike. Her strong floor music suits her style of aggressive gymnastics. Look for her to score well in what could be her best event.
Fobes, with her freshman year behind her, will be a solid performer on beam. She is an aggressive beam worker with an impressive back handspring two feet layout and side somi. Her clean form and high leaps provide for a strong routine that is well-rounded in all aspects of this event. Reibold ‘s persistent rhythm and focus has made her successful on this event. She mounts with a difficult front tuck wolf jump. She has consistent difficulty throughout her routine and will be a solid beam worker for the Wildcats. Lawrence continues to improve on beam, making it one of her best events. She has worked hard to add a triple flight series and continues to improve her difficult dismount-hitch kick to side aerial to 1 ½ twisting back layout. She is fun to watch as her personality shines through on this event. Caliendo has trained hard to break into the lineup with a difficult routine that is becoming solid in practice. She has an impressive front aerial back layout step out combination as well as a back handspring layout to two feet series. Carr is looking to rejoin the beam lineup. A beautiful beam worker, Ali brings a solid routine with graceful jumps and dynamic tumbling. Minichiello has a solid beam routine and will be fighting for a spot in the lineup. An injury at the end of her high school senior year set her back; however, she is returning strong as the season progresses. Erin Machado is an explosive gymnast. Look for her to improve throughout the year as she gains experience competing at the collegiate level. Aucoin, Barile, Bonner and Hudson could all challenge for spots in this lineup as they train to hit in practice and perform under pressure.

Steinberg’s energy and smile make this years’ routine enjoyable and a crowd pleaser. She has improved in her tumbling and has emerged as a strong leader in this floor lineup. Caliendo’s routine is also sure to be a crowd pleaser with her high flying tumbling and fun floor routine. She will incorporate a very difficult full twisting double back along with an upgraded whip half, front layout, front full middle pass. Her Rudi to immediate Shushanova completes the routine in style. Barile is another impressive tumbler. As she adjusts to collegiate gymnastics, look for her to improve and add more difficulty to her already impressive passes. She looks to compete a full twisting double back for a first pass and double tuck last pass. Connors will be another consistent floor competitor for the ’Cats. She has an impressive Rudi-layout step out and double back. Her infectious smile will be sure to get the crowd on its feet! Reibold has added a more difficult whip half front layout in her middle pass that will make her a staple in this year’s floor lineup. She opens with a double pike and finishes with a difficult back layout-2/1 twist-immediate front tuck. Percevecz has the potential to be a solid floor competitor this year. She has become a consistent floor worker and has the potential to break into the lineup with a double pike first pass and back 1 ½ front layout lass pass. Carr, Machado and Kate McGeever are all solid floor workers. Carr is extremely graceful and has difficult double pike and double back passes. Machado has an explosive double pike and Rudi pass. McGeever has an impressive front double full. Don’t be surprised if you see all three of them in the lineup this season.

At GWU’s Charles E. Smith Center (Washington, D.C.) What does “EAGL” stand for? Coaches from four different conferences joined together 15 years ago to form the “East Atlantic Gymnastics League” to provide top caliber competition for some strong women’s gymnastics teams. Teams from the America East (UNH), Big East (West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers), Atlantic Coast Conference (North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Maryland) and Colonial Athletic Association (Towson) initiated one of the strongest postseason meets in the country. Since 2005, George Washington University, an Atlantic 10 team, has replaced Towson. Academic Accolades
Rebekah Porter graduated in May 2008 with a degree in Athletic Training, and with numerous accolades and accomplishments, both athletically and academically. She earned the prestgious NCAA Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics, an award only given out to 13 women across the nation annually. In 2008, Porter was also given the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Postgraduate Scholarship, the Daniel R. Sedory NATA District 1 New Hampshire Athletic Trainers’ Association Scholarship and the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association District 1 Carl Krein Scholarship. She was also awarded the UNH Dean Williamson Award. With an impressive GPA of 3.84, Porter also finished her collegiate gymnastics career with a four-time selection to the NACGC/W and EAGL All-Academic teams. In 2007, Porter earned the UNH Kinesiology Barbara King Newman Memorial Scholarship.

Highlights Pur-r-r-fect 10s Lori Brady 10.0 Vault On January 18, 1992, in a victory over the University of Vermont, UNH senior co-captain Lori Brady (Pocasset, Mass.) achieved a longtime goal as she performed a flawless handspring-front piked salto and became the first collegiate gymnast to ever score a perfect “10” on vault. Brady went on to qualify for her third NCAA Championship where she became the first UNH gymnast to be named an All-American.

On March 23, 1996, freshman Cara Lepper (Southington, Conn.) highlighted the final home meet of the season as she broke her own school record and became only the second Wildcat gymnast ever to score a perfect 10.0 as she posted a perfect score on the balance beam. Lepper’s previous school record was a 9.875.
Tara Phillips 10.0 Vault On March 20, 2003, in a record-breaking team performance, junior Tara Phillips (Spring, Texas) set a record of her own. As only the third gymnast to score a 10.0, Phillips posted a perfect score on the vault in front of her home crowd while hosting the 2003 EAGL Championship. Phillips’ performance beat out her previous 9.950 career high.

University of New Hampshire University of New Hampshire Athletic Department Mission Statement The mission of the intercollegiate athletics program at UNH is to provide student-athletes a collegiate experience that is enriched by their participation in programs which are competitive at the NCAA Division I level both regionally and nationally. The intercollegiate athletics program also plays an important role by enhancing the quality of life for the University and statewide community by being a source of pride and identification with the University while always maintaining high standards of academic scholarship and integrity. As one of the most prestigious institutions in the Northeast, the University of New Hampshire has always been recognized as a leader in education and research, spanning all fields of study and uniting them through interdisciplinary programs, labs, farms, theatres, research centers and libraries. Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, UNH was among the early state institutions of higher education whose formation was made possible by federal government land grants. The purpose for the grants was to establish colleges that would serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. New Hampshire College was originally situated in Hanover, N.H. Here it was in connection with Dartmouth College before moving to Durham in 1893 after Benjamin Thompson bequeathed land and money to further the development of the college. The state legislature then granted its new charter as the University of New Hampshire in 1923. The University hosts nearly 550 international students from more than 40 countries and boasts a population of students from 49 states. Along with over 100 majors offered, UNH encompasses seven schools and colleges that undergraduates can choose from: the College of Liberal Arts, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Health and Human Services, College of Life Sciences and Agricultures, Whittemore School of Business and Economics and the Thompson School of Applied Science. And at the very heart of the University’s undergraduate studies is the General Education Program. The GEP is a core program with a breadth of academic subjects that aims to acquaint the student with some of the major modes of thought necessary to understand oneself, others, society and the world. The University prides itself as being a top 10 entrepreneurial campus (Forbes.com and The Princeton Review) and is among the top 30 universities nationally in science research funding from NASA. UNH is home to the NASA-recognized Space Science Center; the Institute for Study for Earth, Oceans and Space; and the Institute of Marine Science and Engineering. The English program is staffed by an inspiring faculty of winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Young Poets

University of New Hampshire Award. In addition, the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, established in 1962, was recently selected second among all business schools in a nationwide pool of business school deans. New Hampshire also graduates students who attend top-notch graduate schools, including Law School at Harvard and Cornell, Engineering at Stanford, and Medical school at Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins and Harvard. In the last few years, several of the athletic facilities have received major upgrades and improvements. In September 2001, the University completed a new $2.15 million track and field facility. The Jerry Azumah Performance Center, a brand new strength and conditioning facility located in the UNH Field House, was dedicated July 8, 2003. UNH athletics has also added two brand new $1.5 million outdoor artificial fields at Memorial Field (AstroTurf) and Bremner Field (AstroPlay). Lundholm Gymnasium has received some major overhauls, including a new playing surface, new lights, a new sound system and, most recently, a brand new bleacher system in the summer of 2007. A third artificial field (Field Turf) was also installed in Cowell Stadium in July ‘07. In addition to the incredible improvements of its athletic facilities, the University has upgraded and renovated a large part of its academic campus as well. Most recently, Thompson Hall, one of the standing historical landmarks of the University, has been beautifully refurbished and restored. The University also completed a $52 million renovation of Kingsbury Hall, adding 6,000 square feet of student project space for students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, as well as a $4.5 revamp of Hewitt Hall to expand the School of Health and Human Services. In addition, the new 120,000 square foot Biological Sciences Building, Rudman Hall and the Spaulding Life Sciences Renovation project now provide state-of-the-art teaching and researching laboratories. The University also spent $15 million to complete Morse Hall, a new science and engineering building as well as $8.2 million to modernize the Memorial Union Building. This revision to the existing student union building consisted of several upgrades including top kitchen and dining facilities, two theaters, student mailboxes, lounges and meeting rooms, as well as additional retail spaces such as the University Bookstore. The University has also completed construction of the new dining facility on Main Street, Holloway Commons, as well as the renovation of the Dimond Library. In November of 1995, construction of the $27 million Recreation and Sport Complex reached completion. The Whittemore Center includes a state-of-the-art 6,500 to 7,500 seat arena for hockey, concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreational sports facility within the structure which had housed the old Snively Arena. Combining the atmosphere of a small New England liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a major research university, the University of New Hampshire is a place where all students can find or create their own niche and succeed. While the University offers an extremely broad academic base with an inspiring faculty, it also provides students with thousands of opportunities to get involved, either through athletics, campus recreation, student life or research. The University is a dynamic community that not only challenges its members academically but also expands their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and leads to incredible growth as students, faculty, staff and as a community.

The Administration Dr. Mark W. Huddleston- President Mark W. Huddleston is the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire. He brings three decades of experience in public and private higher education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator, most recently as president of Ohio Wesleyan University. His term at UNH commenced in July 2007. Huddleston began his academic career at the State University of New York-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. He then joined the faculty of the University of Delaware in 1980, where he remained for the next 24 years. There, he chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. He was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2001, where he managed 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 fulltime faculty and staff, and served in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. Having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY-Buffalo, Huddleston went on to receive both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been active as a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an advisor in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston is chair of the America East Conference, an incorporator of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Speedway Children’s Charities. He is also an at-large member of the executive/finance committee of New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC). For UNH Huddleston says, the best years are yet to come—and he is happy that he will be a part of that. “I like to think I’m a really accessible guy. I see students on a regular basis when I’m wandering around campus,” Huddleston says, acknowledging that, with 12,000 more students at UNH than at Ohio Wesleyan, it is a different experience but not one he wants to disappear. “If I had wanted to be a CEO of a large company, tucked away in an office somewhere, I would have done that,” he says. “I think people here really want a president that they see and feel is a part of the fabric of UNH. That’s very appealing to me.” Raised in Syracuse, New York, Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.
Marty Scarano - Director of Athletics
Marty Scarano is in the midst of his 11th year as Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. There have been over $8.5 million in capitol improvements since his hiring in the summer of 2000. The Paul Sweet Oval (indoor track) was completely renovated in summer 2008 to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million Field Turf synthetic surface. Additionally, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 renovation included a new state-of-the-art bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. Scarano brought about the completion of the $2.15 million Reggie Atkins Track and Field Facility in the summer of 2000. The addition of a center-ice scoreboard and message board at the Whittemore Center was completed in ‘01. In 2002, UNH athletics renovated Memorial Field along with the Bigglestone Plaza and Bremner Field on the former Upper Field. The two fields, which feature state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lighting, were built at a cost of $1.5 million apiece. In addition, construction was completed to enlarge and improve the women’s locker rooms in the UNH Field House. Two other major improvements to benefit UNH’s student-athletes have been the renovation of the Jerry Azumah Performance Center for Strength and Conditioning – which features state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, new offices and design – and a complete overhaul of the Student-Athlete Academic Center. Scarano and the University are also in the midst of the planning and fundraising for a multi-purpose outdoor facility. Scarano has focused on moving UNH athletics into the national arena. To accomplish that goal, UNH has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships, including men’s ice hockey NCAA regionals in ‘09 and ‘11. In 2007, New Hampshire was host of the NCAA Ski Championships and the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regional within a span of a month. The Wildcats also hosted a men’s hockey regional in ‘04 as well as the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four in both ‘02 and ‘05. Furthermore, the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional took place at UNH’s Whittemore Center. Last season, the Wildcat men’s and women’s ice hockey squads, football, women’s lacrosse, women’s gymnastics, and the men’s and women’s ski teams all competed in the NCAA postseason; individual student-athletes also represented UNH in women’s cross country, and both men’s and women’s outdoor track. With all of these initiatives and accomplishments, UNH athletics has consistently been ranked in the top 90 programs among all Div. I institutions in the battle for the NACDA Directors Cup, which is well ahead of nearly all of UNH’s conference opponents. Scarano’s many accomplishments during his tenure have played a key role in UNH being named one of the Top 20 athletic departments in the country in U.S. News and World Report college athletics rankings in March 2002. UNH’s graduation rate for athletes has maintained levels at or near 90%, which puts it among the nation’s best in Div. I. UNH football returned to national prominence and was ranked No. 1 in the nation for parts of three consecutive years; they have advanced to the NCAA postseason each of the last seven years, with a stretch of six quarterfinal appearances. The men’s ice hockey team won the regular season Hockey East title in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008 and advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four in ‘02 and ‘03. The Wildcat women’s hockey team has won Hockey East regular season and tournament titles from 2006 to 2009 and advanced to the Frozen Four in both ‘06 and ‘08. The women’s gymnastics team won its first-ever EAGL title in 2003, when the event was hosted at the Whitt. The volleyball team won America East crowns in ‘02 and ‘03 and went on to the NCAA tournament in those seasons. The field hockey team made the NCAA’s in 2000, while women’s lacrosse made “The Big Dance” in 2004 and again in 2008. In 2007, Scarano was named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for I-AA football in the Northeast region. He was also awarded the NACDA A.D. of the Year for the Football Championship Sub-Division. Scarano has also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 Football (currently the CAA), Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, Director of Physical Education, associate director and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a master’s degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have two daughters, Lynden and Corey, and a son, Kyle.

Athletic excellence is part of the formula for success in the collegiate experience for University of New Hampshire gymnasts. The primary measure of achievement is the student-athlete’s success in the classroom. UNH is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence and has one of the top graduation rates in the country. Realizing the time commitment the gymnasts give to the school, the University administers Joanne Maldari a comprehensive program of academic support services that is available to Wildcat gymnasts and all other student-athletes. Assistant Athletic This program includes the monitoring of academic progress, providing tutorial services, access to a well equipped studentDirector/Academic Support athlete academic center, as well as interacting with the academic advisors within the various colleges. Serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services since 1994 is Joanne Maldari, a 1990 graduate of Holy Cross who went on to earn her master’s degree in Athletic Counseling at Springfield College. She was recognized for her outstanding efforts at UNH by receiving the University’s 2001 Academic Advising Award. Before coming to Durham, Maldari served athletic counseling internships at Springfield and Central Connecticut State University. Cathy Leach assists Maldari and enters her ninth year of working directly with women’s gymnastics student-athletes. Leach was the Women’s Sports Information Director from 1985-88 and served as interim Women’s Athletic Director in the 1989-90 season before working in admissions from 1990-2001. Cathy Leach Since 1990, the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) has recognized gymnasts Assistant Athletic Director who have excelled both in competition and the classroom. In 2010, the squad placed an impressive 12 gymnasts on the Academic Support/ NACGC/W Scholastic All-America Team: Kelsey Alwin, Katie Caliendo, Ali Carr, Diane Grey, Courtney Connors, Taryn LaFountain, Compliance Katie Lawrence, Danielle Reibold, Andie Sablosky, Janae Sernoffsky, Keeley Smith and Chelsea Steinberg.

Gnarlz In the spring of 2008 the University of New Hampshire Athletic Department received a generous grant from the Parents’ Association to create a new mascot costume. Once the grant was awarded, the Athletics Marketing Department searched for a designer and ultimately hired Street Characters of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. After having the same mascot for eight years, it was time to offer a new look. After much discussion, the decision was made to create a more “student-friendly” mascot, as Wild E. Cat was designed to appeal to children. In August 2008, the marketing department began the process by releasing information about the naming contest. Fans were encouraged to submit their ideas for the name for the new mascot online. After a month of voting, the top four names were released online for another web poll. The final name was chosen on September 15, 2008, and “Gnarlz” was the winner. Gnarlz made his debut on Sept. 20, 2008, at the UNH football game versus the University at Albany. He was well received by fans of all ages and helped the ‘Cats ring in their third straight win of the season. Gnarlz continues to team up with Wild E. Wildcat Statue
During the 2006 Homecoming Weekend, the University of New Hampshire unveiled a bronze statue of the University’s mascot, the Wildcat, installed on the street side of Memorial Field. The $160,000 project was funded entirely with private gifts, including support from the Edward ‘42H and Selma ‘42 Bacon Simon Fund, many alumni donors, the Alumni Association, and the UNH Parents Association. The sculpture was created by Matthew Gray Palmer of Friday Harbor, Washington, in May 2005. He was chosen by a committee of UNH staff and faculty members, alumni and parents, as well as many professional artists and was handpicked out of a group of 40 artists who submitted proposals for the project.

Spectators Guide
Vault Vaulting requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Vaults are divided into three categories; handsprings, Tsukaharas 1/4 & 1/2 turn entry, and roundoff entry. The collegiate program has its own table for the starting value of all vaults with a maximum value of 10.0. Deductions may be taken in three phases of the vault — preflight (board to the table), support (when touching table), and after-flight (distance and height) from the table to point of landing. Only one vault will be performed per competitor.
In collegiate team competition, six gymnasts perform on each of the four apparatus. The five best scores per event are added together to form the cumulative team total. At least two judges are required to evaluate an athlete’s performance. The scores are averaged to arrive at a final mark. Collegiate programs follow the rules developed for the Level 10 Junior Olympic program with some modifications. Optional routines, put together by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she may perform best, are based from a starting score of 9.5, with a possibility of an additional .5 bonus for performing greater difficulty and special connections of skills. Skills are divided into different categories (A,B,C,D,E), with E containing the highest level of difficulty. Each event has special requirements that must be met. Judges use the following categories to evaluate optional routines: • Value Parts (difficulty) 2.2 • Special Requirements 2.0 • Additive Value 0.5 • Execution, Combination & Artistry 5.3 • Total 10.0 General: Each event has defined basic requirements for choice of elements “up to the competition level.” If not met, the deduction is .10. Other deductions are taken for such things as bent arms and legs, separation of legs, incomplete turns or lack of full stretch and insufficient artistry of presentation.

composed of elements from different groups: kips, cast and counter swings, underswing and clear hip circles, giant swings backward and forward, stalder circles and circle swings and hechts. Special requirements include a minimum of two bar changes, two different flight elements, minimum 2 different “C‘s” or a “B” and a “D”, one element with longitudinal axis turn of “C” value or greater and a dismount of at least “C” value. A strong routine shows elements with great amplitude, release moves, grip changes and direction changes and difficulty well-balanced throughout the routine. Pauses for concentration, intermediate swings and uncharacteristic elements are to be avoided. If a fall occurs, the gymnast must resume the exercise within 45 seconds.
Balance Beam
The beam routine should be composed of elements from the following groups: acrobatic elements with and without flight; dance elements such as turns, leaps or jumps and hops; running combinations; balance elements in a stand, sit and lying positions; and body waves. Special requirements of this event are an acrobatic series of a minimum of two flight elements - one which must be at least a C with or without hand support (both elements must start and finish on the beam), dance series of two or more elements one which must be “C’’ value or greater, a minimum of 360 degree turn, a leap or jump requiring 180 degree split (front or side) and at least a “C” dismount or a “B” preceded by and directly connected to any “C” or greater element. Performing on the four-inch beam requires precise movement and intense concentration; each wobble results in a deduction. The routine must finish under 90 seconds. If a fall occurs, a gymnast must resume the exercise within 30 seconds.

Wildcat Gymnastics
Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music. The composition of the exercise must show harmony between gymnastics and acrobatic elements, create dynamic changes in rhythm and levels, and show versatile use of the entire floor. The routine must contain one acrobatic series with two (2) saltos (same or different), OR two (2) directly connected saltos. (If the two (2) saltos are not directly connected, they must be included in an acrobatic series, which is defined as a minimum of three acrobatic flight elements, with or without hand support). Three (3) different saltos are also required throughout the routine. A dance pass with a minimum of two (2), directly or indirectly connected leaps or jumps; one of which is a leap (one foot take-off) requiring a minimum of 180° split fulfills the dance expectations. A minimum of “C” salto as the last isolated salto or within the last salto connection completes the special requirements.
