MEDIA POLICIES

WELCOME!: The University of New Hampshire office of athletic communications genuinely appreciates your coverage of UNH volleyball, and looks forward to each and everytime it can welcome you to Durham. Members of the office include volleyball contact Jon Luszcz, associate athletic director for communications Mike Murphy, associate directors of athletic communications Doug Poole and Alex Comeau, and Taylor Sievers, assistant director of athletic communications and the team of student-assistants, are available to assist with your coverage. The office is happy to help you however it can. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the policies relevant to your coverage of the volleyball program, as outlined on this page and the next. Please feel free to contact Jon Luszcz via phone or email with questions regarding the media policy. GENERAL POLICIES: All interviews with any member of the volleyball program, including head coach Jill Hirschinger, the coaching staff and student-athletes must be coordinated through Jon Luszcz in the office of athletic communictions. Members of the media are strictly prohibited from approaching any coach, staff member or student-athlete by any means, including text messages, email, phone calls (cell, office or home) or social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, without first aproaching athletic communications. Regarding unique subject matter, such as human-interest angles, members of the media are welcome to approach the office of athletic communications at least 24 hours in advance with requests to interview any member of the program. Approved requests will be granted. INTERVIEW GUIDELINES: Interviews, either in person or via telephone, with members of the UNH volleyball coaching staff and student-athletes must be coordinated through assistant director of athletic communications Jon Luszcz. Media are asked not to request an individual’s personal contact information, including email and cell number, but rather to contact Jon Luszcz. Student-athletes and coaches are available for interviews at the conclusion of daily practice sessions. Student-athlete interviews will not conflict with classes, meetings, medical treatment or practice times. Interviews are not permitted in the locker room or training room. Interviews will not be granted on match days until following the contest. Telephone interviews should be requested at least 24 hours in advance and coordinated through Jon Luszcz. All interviews will be processed on an availability basis involving the requested interviewee. PRACTICE GUIDELINES: All UNH volleyball practices are open to the media and public, unless otherwise noted. During the season, practice will generally run from 1-4 p.m. during the week, except on match and travel days. Please note, practice times are subject to change on short or no notice. At times, practice will end early, so please plan to arrive early. Practice will usually take place in Lundholm Gymnasium, but contact Jon Luszcz for the most updated schedule. All interviews must take place before or after practice. If this is an issue, contact Jon Luszcz, and the office of athletic communiations and we will try and accommodate your schedule. Student-athlete interviews will not conflict with classes, meetings, medical treatment or practice times. All media should remain on the sidelines, standing a safe distance from the boundary to prevent collisions.

GAMEDAY: Near the end of each home match, the athletic communications staff will ask those on hand representing the media who they wish to speak with. Approximately 10 minutes after the conclusion of a match, head coach Jill Hirschinger and the selected student-athletes will be available for questions. GAMEDAY SERVICES: In-game services include live online statistics and box scores following each media timeout. Lundholm Gymnasium offers complimentary wireless Internet access. REPORTING OF INJURIES: At all times throughout the calendar year, head coach Jill Hirschinger will serve as the sole source for injury information. All questions related to injuries should be directed to Hirschinger, and not to any other members of the program, including athletic trainers, doctors, the injured student-athlete or her teammates. LUNDHOLM GYMNASIUM DIRECTIONS: Address: University of New Hampshire Field House 145 Main Street Durham, N.H. 03824 From Boston: Take 95 North into New Hampshire and continue on to the toll booth.From the toll, go approximately seven miles to Exit 4 for the Spaulding Turnpike. Go about four miles and take the last exit before the toll (Exit 6W) for Concord and Durham. Go approximately four miles and continue straight through a traffic light (Madbury Road), and proceed another 1 1/2 miles to the Route 155A exit, marked “University of New Hampshire” Take a left turn off the ramp and proceed approximately one mile The Field House will be on your right. For parking see below From Maine: Follow 95 South to Spaulding Turnpike (Route 4 West) and continue as above From the West (Vermont, Concord): Take 89 South to 93 North. Follow 93 North, approximately four miles to 393 East, which will merge with Route 4 East. Follow Route 4 to Route 155A exit for “University of New Hampshire.” Make a right off the ramp and proceed as above. From the West (Manchester, Nashua): Take 93 North to Route 101 East. Follow 101 to Exit 6 (Route 125). Exit and take a left onto 125 and follow straight to Lee Traffic Circle. First right at circle is Route 4 East. Continue as above. Public Parking: Approximately one-quarter mile before reaching the Field House, make a left turn opposite tennis courts -Green sign “Field House Parking” -- follow road and turn right at fork. Parking Lot “A” is one-quarter mile ahead on the left.

UNH VOLLEYBALL SEASON PREVIEW

THE MISSION REMAINS THE SAME FOR THE WILDCATS IN 2015; WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP AND COMPETE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. LAST NOVEMBER, NEW HAMPSHIRE SEALED ITS SECOND STRAIGHT AMERICA EAST TITLE AND FIFTH IN PROGRAM HISTORY ON HOME COURT. THE WILDCATS, LED BY SIX-TIME AMERICA EAST COACH OF THE YEAR RECIPIENT JILL HIRSCHINGER, ARE LOOKING TO FURTHER ETCH THEIR NAMES IN THE RECORD BOOK AND CAPTURE THEIR FIRST-EVER THREE-PEAT. WILDCATS IN THE CLASSROOM

UNH, FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR, EARNED THE AMERICAN VOLLEYBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION (AVCA) TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD. THE WILDCATS FINISHED THE 2014-15 YEAR WITH A CUMULATIVE GPA OF 3.40. NEW HAMPSHIRE IS ONE OF 146 NCAA DIVISION I INSTITUTIONS TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR THE AWARD. ADDITIONALLY, FIVE STUDENT-ATHLETES WERE INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL COLLEGE ATHLETE HONOR SOCIETY, CHI ALPHA SIGMA. IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE DISTINCTION, ONE MUST ACHIEVE A CUMULATIVE GRADE-POINT AVERAGE OF 3.5 OR HIGHER, ACHIEVED AT LEAST JUNIOR STANDING ACADEMICALLY AND BE OF GOOD MORAL CHARACTER. UNH VOLLEYBALL HOSTED ITS 10TH ANNUAL “VOLLEY 4 HOLLY” TOURNAMENT THIS PAST SPRING. THE EVENT WAS CREATED TO RAISE MONEY FOR WILDCAT VOLLEYBALL PLAYER HOLLY YOUNG, WHO PASSED AWAY ON JAN. 24, 2008 AFTER A COURAGEOUS THREE-YEAR BATTLE WITH EWING’S SARCOMA, A RARE FORM OF BONE CANCER. BRANDON THOMAS WAS APPOINTED AS AN ACADEMIC COORDINATOR DURING AUGUST OF 2013. THOMAS IS A TWO-TIME GRADUATE FROM WINTHROP UNIVERSITY EARNING A BACHELOR’S OF ARTS IN ENGLISH (2010) AND A MASTER’S OF SCIENCE IN SPORT & FITNESS ADMINISTRATION (2012). UNH ATHLETIC TRAINING THE ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM WAS RENOVATED OVER THE WINTER BREAK OF THE 2012-13 ACADEMIC YEAR. WITH A REDESIGNED LAYOUT, ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING AND STATE-OF-THEART EQUIPMENT, THE ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM IS MORE COMFORTABLE, ENJOYABLE AND EFFICIENT FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES AND STAFF. JON DANA DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE

JON DANA HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE UNH ATHLETIC PROGRAM SINCE 1984. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER AS AN ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER AND WAS PROMOTED TO MEN’S HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER IN 1987 AND HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER FOR THE ENTIRE PROGRAM IN 1989. IN 2001, HE WAS NAMED UNH’S DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE. IN ADDITION TO OVERSEEING OPERATIONS AND SUPERVISING THE SPORTS MEDICINE STAFF, DANA WORKS SPECIFICALLY WITH THE FOOTBALL AND SKI TEAMS. THE SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE CONSISTS OF EIGHT FULL- AND PART-TIME CERTIFIED AND LICENSED ATHLETIC TRAINERS. THE DEPARTMENT WORKS OUT OF TWO LOCATIONS – THE FIELD HOUSE AND THE WHITTEMORE CENTER. BOTH ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOMS UTILIZE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE MODALITIES, INCLUDING MUSCLE STIMULATORS, ULTRASOUND, HEAT, CRYOTHERAPY, AND HYDROTHERAPY. THE CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER PROVIDES A MYRIAD OF SERVICES TO THE DEPARTMENT AND THE STUDENT-ATHLETE. THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, INITIAL INJURY ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT, EMERGENCY INJURY/ILLNESS MANAGEMENT, REFERRAL TO APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONALS, INTERFACE WITH ASSOCIATED PHYSICIANS AND OTHERS, REHABILITATION, COUNSELING, ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES, INCLUDING INSURANCE COORDINATION, SUPERVISION OF PRACTICES AND GAMES, DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EMERGENCY PLANS, AS WELL AS STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER SUPERVISION. THE ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM IS CONSIDERED TO BE “A DESIGNATED FACILITY WHERE COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED. JOHN CIANI ENTERS HIS 14TH YEAR DIRECTING THE STRENGTH & CONDITIONING PROGRAM FOR THE UNH VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM. THE VOLLEYBALL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING PROGRAM CREATED BY CIANI UTILIZES ALL FACETS OF TRAINING FROM BASIC STRENGTH TRAINING AND OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING TO SIMPLE CONDITIONING AND VOLLEYBALL SPECIFIC TRAINING THAT ENHANCES THE ATHLETE’S ABILITIES DURING COMPETITION. NO SINGLE TRAINING STYLE DOMINATES THE PROGRAM; CIANI USES A COMBINATION OF ALL TRAINING TECHNIQUES FOR THE TOTAL DEVELOPMENT OF A VOLLEYBALL PLAYER. CIANI WAS A FEATURED SPEAKER AT THE VERMONT STATE CLINIC FOR THE NATIONAL STRENGTH & CONDITIONING ASSOCIATION IN JUNE 2010. THE SPORTS PERFORMANCE CLINIC, WHICH WAS HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT VARSITY WEIGHT ROOM, WAS ATTENDED BY ATHLETIC TRAINERS STRENGTH COACHES, PERSONAL TRAINERS, AND OTHER FITNESS PROFESSIONALS ACROSS THE NEW ENGLAND AREA. IN ADDITION TO CIANI, THE CLINIC INCLUDED PRESENTATIONS FROM STRENGTH COACHES FROM BOSTON COLLEGE, DARTMOUTH AND BOSTON UNIVERSITY. CIANI, A NATIVE OF THE SAN DIEGO, CALIF. AREA, CAME TO UNH AFTER A STINT AS ASSISTANT STRENGTH COACH AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA. DURING HIS TENURE AT UND, CIANI WORKED PRIMARILY WITH THE 2001 DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM, WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL AND MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAMS. THE JERRY AZUMAH PERFORMANCE CENTER OPENED ITS DOORS IN THE SUMMER OF 2003 TO UNH STUDENT-ATHLETES. A MONETARY DONATION BY AZUMAH, A CORNERBACK WITH THE CHICAGO BEARS OF THE NFL AND 1999 RECIPIENT OF THE WALTER PAYTON AWARD (TOP FOOTBALL PLAYER IN DIV. 1-AA), ALLOWED THE UNH ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT TO OVERHAUL ITS EXISTING STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING CENTER. LUNDHOLM GYMNASIUM IS LOCATED IN THE FIELD HOUSE. IN 1968, THE GYM WAS DEDICATED IN THE NAME OF CARL LUNDHOLM, A 1921 GRADUATE AND THE ATHLETIC DEPARMENT’S DIRECTOR FROM 1939 TO 1963. IN 2000, THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT RECEIVED APPROVAL TO BEGIN RESTORATION OF LUNDHOLM GYMNASIUM. THE RENOVATIONS INCULDED A REFINISHED FLOOR, NEW BLEACHERS, LIGHTING, SOUND SYSTEM AND SCOREBOARDS. UNH STADIUM PROJECT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

ON JAN. 31, 2014, UNH ANNOUNCED PLANS TO CONSTRUCT A $25 MILLION ATHLETIC COMPLEX AS PART OF THE CAMPUS’ MASTER PLAN. EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN 2016, THE FACILITY WILL OFFER INCREASED AND IMPROVED SEATING, STATE-OF-THE-ART BROADCAST AND WIFI CAPABILITY, CONCESSIONS, RESTROOMS AND A SPECIAL STUDENT SECTION. THE ORIGINAL CONCRETE SECTION OF THE CURRENT EAST SIDE FACILITY DATES TO THE 1930’S. CONSTRUCTED HAS ALREADY BEGUN TO TAKE SHAPE WITH THE ADDITION OF STADIUM LIGHTS, REPLACEMENT OF THE GENERAL ADMISSION STANDS AND THE REORIENTATION OF CONCRETE STADIUM SEATING AND AISLE WAYS. WHITTEMORE CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

USED BY THE UNH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY TEAMS, THE WHITTEMORE CENTER OPENED NOV. 10, 1995, WITH THE WILDCATS DEFEATING THEN DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 6-5, IN OVERTIME. THAT SUCCESS HAS CONTINUED EACH YEAR. IN 2004-05, THE WILDCATS SET A SCHOOL RECORD WHEN THEY PLAYED IN FRONT OF 126,028 PEOPLE IN 20 HOME GAMES AND OVERALL THE WILDCATS HAVE PLAYED IN FRONT OF 2,239,940 FANS. THE WHITTEMORE CENTER WAS THE SITE OF OF THE 2002 AND 2005 WOMEN’S FROZEN FOUR AND THE EVENT WILL RETURN TO THE WHITT IN 2016. MOST RECENTLY, UNH ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL INSTALL A FOUR-SIDED, CENTER-HUNG VIDEOBOARD AND LED DISPLAY BAND AT THE WHITTEMORE CENTER ARENA IN TIME FOR THE 2015-16 SEASON. CLICK TO LEARN MORE

THE MISSION OF THE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS PROGRAM AT UNH IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES TO ENRICH THEIR COLLEGIATE EXPERIENCE THROUGH PARTICIPATION ON ATHLETIC TEAMS WHICH ARE COMPETITIVE AT THE CONFERENCE LEVEL AND BEYOND. THE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC PROGRAM ALSO HAS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN ENRICHING THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE UNIVERSITY AND STATEWIDE COMMUNITY, AND AS A SOURCE OF PRIDE AND ENCOURAGEMENT FOR SUPPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY, WHILE MAINTAINING HIGH STANDARDS OF ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP.
