THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE The University of New Hampshire was originally founded as a land-grant college whose mission was to shape and educate citizenry among the state’s farmers, business people and engineers. Today, the University is a land-, sea-, and space-grant university serving a growing undergraduate student body of about 11,942 and a graduate population of 2,257 in addition to 621 full-time faculty members, 86% of which have earned their doctorate degree. The University has grown into a top public research university occupying 2,600 acres of classic living and learning space, while still maintaining the look and feel of a New England liberal arts college with a faculty dedicated to teaching. UNH’s student to faculty ratio registers at 18:1 with 85% of its classes having 50 students or less. History As one of the most prestigious institutions in the Northeast, the University of New Hampshire has always been recognized as a leader in education and research, spanning all fields of study and uniting them through interdisciplinary programs, labs, farms, theatres, research centers, and libraries. Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, UNH was among the early state institutions of higher education whose formation was made possible by federal government land grants. The purpose for the grants was to establish colleges that would serve the sons and daughters of farming and laboring families. New Hampshire College was originally situated in Hanover, N.H. Here it was in connection with Dartmouth College before moving to Durham in 1893 after Benjamin Thompson bequeathed land and money to further the development of the college. The state legislature then granted its new charter as the University of New Hampshire in 1923. The University hosts 733 international students from more than 45 countries and boasts a population of students from all 50 states. Along with over 100 majors offered, UNH encompasses seven schools and colleges that undergraduates can choose from: the College of Liberal Arts, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Health and Human Services, College of Life Sciences and Agricultures, Whittemore School of Business and Economics, and the Thompson School of Applied Science. And at the very heart of the University’s undergraduate studies is the General Education Program. The GEP is a core program with a breadth of academic subjects that aims to acquaint the student with some of the major modes of thought necessary to understand oneself, others, society, and the world. The University prides itself as being a top 10 entrepreneurial campus (Forbes.com and The Princeton Review) and is among the top 30 universities nationally in science research funding from NASA. UNH is home to the NASA-recognized Space Science Center; the Institute for Study for Earth, Oceans and Space; and the Institute of Marine Science and Engineering. The English program is staffed by an inspiring faculty of winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Edgar Allen Poe Award and the Young Poets Award. In addition, the Whittemore School of Business and Economics, established in 1962, was recently selected second among all business schools in a nationwide pool of business school deans. UNH also graduates students who attend top-notch graduate schools, including Law School at Harvard and Cornell, Engineering at Stanford, and Medical School at Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, and Harvard. Campus In recent years, several of the athletic facilities have received major upgrades and improveCampus ments. In September of 2001, the University completed a new $2.15 million track and field facility. The Jerry Azumah Performance Center, a strength and conditioning facility located in the UNH Field House, was dedicated on July 8, 2003. Renovations to the Center included the addition of 5,000 pounds of Olympic weights, 7,000 pounds of dumbbells, 14 Powerlift platform stations, 12 Hammer strength machines and an additional 15,000 pounds of weights. UNH athletics also added two $1.5 million outdoor artificial fields, Memorial Field and Bremner Field. Lundholm Gymnasium has received some major overhauls, including a new playing surface, new lights, new sound system, new bleacher system, new backboards and new scoreboards. The Paul Sweet Oval was also renovated to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. In the 2012 offseason, Cowell Stadium was fitted with a brand new scoreboard while the football locker rooms were renovated as well. In the locker rooms, a new lighting system was installed while a 55inch flat-screen TV and Fathead-designed murals featuring former players and UNH history were added to the walls. A memorial of Todd Walker was also added in honor of the former Wildcat wide receiver. Walker suffered an untimely and heroic death March 18, 2011, in Boulder, Colo., when he stopped an attempted robbery and saved the life of a woman he was walking home. Most recently, a new electronic scoreboard was added to Bremner Field and it has been announced that lights will be constructed at Cowell Stadium by the 2013-14 academic year. In November of 1995, construction of the $27 million Recreation and Sport Complex reached completion. The Whittemore Center includes a state-of-the-art 6,500 to 7,500 seat arena for hockey, concerts and convocations, as well as a new three-level recreational sports facility within the structure that had housed the old Snively Arena. In addition to the incredible improvements of its athletic facilities, the University has upgraded and renovated a large part of its academic campus as well. The latest addition to the expanding campus is the Paul College of Business and Economics, a 115,000 square foot academic building located on Garrison Avenue. Completed in January 2013, the building features 16 technology-rich classrooms, totaling 950 new instructional seats. There will also be 25 high-tech groups study rooms along with a two-story “Great Hall” Dimond Library for informal and special events. Outside of the facility, there will be a courtyard for outdoor activities and events. The building is a LEED

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold facility, maintaining the University’s commitment to sustainable programs and facilities. The University broke ground on the project in May 2011. Thompson Hall, one of the standing historical landmarks of the University, has also been beautifully refurbished and restored. The University completed a $52 million renovation of Kingsbury Hall in October of 2007, adding 6,000 square feet of student project space for students in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, as well as a $4.5 million revamp of Hewitt Hall to expand the School of Health and Human Services. In addition, the 120,000 square foot Biological Sciences Building, Rudman Hall and the Spaulding Life Sciences Renovation project now provide state-of-the-art teaching and researching laboratories. The University also spent $15 million to complete Morse Hall, a new science and engineering building as well as $8.2 million to modernize the Memorial Union Building. The revision to the existing student union building consisted of several upgrades including top kitchen and dining facilities, two theaters, student mailboxes, lounges and meeting rooms, as well as additional retail spaces such as the University Bookstore. Additionally, the University completed construction of the new dining facility on Main Street, Holloway Commons, as well as the renovation of the Dimond Library. Combining the atmosphere of a small New England liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a major research university, the University of New Hampshire is a place where all students can find or create their own niche and succeed. While the University offers an extremely broad academic base with an inspiring faculty, it also provides students with thousands of opportunities to get involved, either through athletics, campus recreation, student life, or research. The University is a dynamic community that not only challenges its members academically but also expands their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and leads to incredible growth as students, faculty, staff, and as a community.

Recently, all of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s locker rooms in the Field House were renovated. The locker room features 16 wooden lockers, a large-screen television and a lounge area.

The Henry C. Swasey Pool is the home of the New Hampshire Wildcats swimming and diving team. Located in UNHâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Field House, the 25-yard pool has six lanes for competitive use with an attached 13foot deep diving well that includes one-and threemeter duraflex boards. Completeing the facility is a 650 seat balcony for spectator seating at New Hampshire home meets. Recent fundraising efforts, combined with generous donations from alumni, parents and friends, made possible the installation of a new multi-lane read out score board and new aqua grip touch pads by Colorado Timing Systems, Inc. Also, a new records board proudly displays team and pool records.

The athletic training room was renovated over the winter break of the 2012-13 academic year. With a redesigned layout, energy efficient lighting and stateof-the art equipment, the athletic training room is more comfortable, enjoyable and efficient for student-athletes and staff.

The Jerry Azumah Performance Center opened its doors in the summer of 2003 to UNH student-athletes. A generous donation by Azumah, a former cornerback with the Chicago Bears and the 1999 recipient of the Walter Payton Award, allowed for a new state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center.

Nine grants of $7,500 to $25,000 were awarded to honor and support student groups engaged in philanthropy and community service. In total, more than $100,000 was given to America East student groups. America East and College for Every Student (CFES), a national non-profit that helps underserved kids attend college, held an event on April 9. Student-athletes partnered with CFES Scholars at participating schools for a community service project, ranging from beautifying school property to collecting food and shoes for charity drives. Members of the America East Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), with at least one representative from each of the nine America East schools, volunteered their time to clean up and paint at the Heading Home Family Shelter in Boston as part of “Make a Difference Day.” Five America East institutions are ranked among the top 105 national universities according to the U.S News and World Report America’s Best College Guide and UMBC was recognized as the top “Up-and-Coming” university in the country for the second straight year.

Joshua Willman

Head Coach Miami ’84 - 21st Season In 2013 head coach Joshua Willman celebrated his 20th season at the helm of the University of New Hampshire’s Swimming & Diving program. The 2012-2013 season was arguably one of Willman’s best to date as he earned his 15th Coach of the Year Award and brought the program its seventh conference championship title. The Wildcats won the 2013 America East title with a record setting 858 points to break the conference record held by the 1998 Wildcat squad. Junior Jenni Roberts (Springvale, Maine) was selected America East Swimmer of the Year and Roberts along with sophomore Katie Mann (Prince George, British Columbia) went on to qualify and compete at the 2013 Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. It was the fourth consecutive year Willman has been named Coach of the Year for the America East Conference. A 1984 graduate of the University of Miami (Florida), Willman began his coaching career just after graduation at the YMCA and U.S.A. Swimming level. Willman entered the collegiate coaching arena as the Assistant Coach for New Hampshire in 1991, took over the program the following season and earned his first coaching honor as the Men’s Coach of the Year. Since then, New Hampshire’s success has not gone unnoticed, as Willman has become the America East Conference’s most highly decorated coach. He has been selected America East Coach of the Year 12 times in the past 20 years (1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013) and ECAC Coach of the Year three times (2003, 2011 and 2013). New Hampshire swimmers are the most highly honored student-athletes in the America East, winning 33 major conference awards including 21 Swimmers of the Year (16 America East and 5 ECAC), seven America East ScholarAthlete of the Year, four Rookie of the Year and three Senior High Point Coaches awards. During Willman’s tenure, 342 swimmers have been crowned America East champions and 103 have been named ECAC Champions. In total, Wildcat swimmers have broken over 242 school records, 90 America East records and 23 ECAC records. A number of milestones in particular have marked UNH’s steady rise to the top. In 1995, Willman produced UNH’s first-ever NCAA Division I qualifier, Denise Leckenby. She later went on to earn All-America honors in 1996 placing eighth in the 200-freestyle as well as 11th in the 100-freestyle earning UNH enough points to finish 27th in the nation at the 1996 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Building on the successes of the mid-90’s, the Wildcats then won their first America East title in 19971998 and then repeated as conference champions in 1998-1999. Beginning the new era in 2000, New Hampshire native and breaststroke standout Kristen Zeimetz was a finalist at the 2000 U.S. Open and participated in the 2000 U.S. Olympic team trials. In 2003 the Wildcats won their first ECAC Championship team title, earning Willman his first of three ECAC Coach of the Year honors, and continued to place near the top at the America East Championships once again, as

they won back-to-back America East titles in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. New Hampshire continued to qualify swimmers for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, as senior Shannon Daly and sophomore Kary Goodman both placed in the top 25 in the nation in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly, respectively, during the 2006 campaign. UNH completed the 2006 season ranked eighth nationally in the mid-major Division I Polls. The Wildcats won the ECAC Championships in 2011 for the second time in school history, claiming the title by a 1.5 point margin, a first-place finish on the final event, taking the 400-yard freestyle relay in record setting fashion. Most recently, in 2012-13, Willman led the team to a 6-0 start and finished the season with a record of 7-2 en route to the record setting America East title performance. As the national polls were released by CollegeSwimming.com (Feb. 21), the Wildcats earned the 19th spot in the rankings. Among the top-five schools were (1) Florida, (2) California, (3) Southern California, (4) Texas and (5) Stanford. In the 19th spot, the squad ranked ahead of Princeton (20), Missouri State (21), Columbia (22), UMBC (23), North Carolina (24) and Virginia Tech (25). It was the first time UNH was ranked in the Top 20 in the Division I Poll. In the ensuing ECAC Championships, the Wildcats posted a second-place finish with 403 points, despite not competing in relays. Willman earned his third ECAC Coach of the Year honors as Roberts and Katie Mann were honored as co-swimmers of the meet. New Hampshire’s swimmers are consistently swimming at the elite level representing not only the United States but more recently internationally with Wildcat swimmers competing in Senior Nationals and the Olympic Trials for their home countries including Canada, South Africa and Denmark. New Hampshire is consistently an Academic All-America team and swimmers have earned NCAA Academic All-American honors, post-graduate scholarship awards and ranked as high as sixth nationally for grade point average. Willman is a certified ASCA Level IV coach and has been a recipient of the ASCA Coaching Excellence Award.

JARROD ZWIRKO

Associate head Coach NEW HAMPSHIRE ’04 - SIXTH Season Jarrod Zwirko serves as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator and works primarily with the middledistance and distance freestyle group for the Wildcats. As recruiting coordinator, Zwirko is the main contact for recruits and identifies talented athletes and sets up official visits for potential student-athletes. A 2004 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Zwirko was a two-year captain for the Wildcats specializing in middle distance and still holds two UNH records for relays. As a student-athlete he was an 11-time finalist at the America East Championships and runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle in 2002, while also earning All-Conference honors twice. Zwirko also served as SAAC President as an undergraduate and was nominated for UNH Athlete of the Year twice. Upon completion of his eligibility, Zwirko entered the graduate program at UNH and earned his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. During this time, he served as the graduate assistant for the UNH swim team and was an integral part of the staff that twice earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors after winning back-to-back America East Championship titles. During his last season, UNH took two women to the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. After earning his Master’s degree, Zwirko joined the staff at the Williston Northampton School of Western Massachusetts, his former prep school, in 2006. While at Williston, he served for two years as an English teacher and swim coach, helping the team win the New England Championships in the small school division. Returning to UNH as a full-time assistant in 2008, Zwirko has been a part of four consecutive America East Women’s Coaching Staffs of the Year (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013).

ROBIN KAMIL

DIVING COACH RHODE iSLAND ’04 - FIRST SEASON A native of Huntington, N.Y., Robin Kamil was a five-time letterman in high school, a four-time New York state qualifier and Suffolk County New York champion. Kamil also dove for Kevin Ryan and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Divers, eventually competing for the University of Rhode Island and receiving a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology in 2004. Kamil earned her doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 2007. While furthering her education, Kamil established her own business as a private swimming and diving instructor, preparing children for competitive swimming while specializing in children with special needs and autism. Moving to the Seacoast in 2007, she worked as a physical therapist concentrating in neurological and orthopedic needs of the geriatric population. Robin’s husband Matthew is the Medical Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Center affiliated with Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H. Robin and Matthew have two young children Cassie, age 3, and Corey, age 18 months, and enjoy swimming and gymnastics classes.

JARED FELKER

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT Coach VIRGINA ’00 - THIRD Season Jared Felker enters his third season with the New Hampshire swimming and diving staff as a volunteer assistant coach. He brings a wealth of technical knowledge of the sport to the program and works primarily with the sprint and stroke groups. The Yarmouth, Maine native brings extensive experience both as a former swimmer and current head coach of the Seacoast Swimming Association, which is one of New England’s premier swim clubs. As one of Maine’s top swimmers, Felker graduated from the Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, where he was a seven-time high school All-American. He went on to compete for the University of Virginia, where he was a four-year varsity swimmer and team captain and earned All-ACC honors. Felker capped a stellar collegiate career as the 2000 ACC champion in the 100 butterfly. He also competed in the 2000 US Olympic Trials in the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Upon graduation and earning a B.A. in Sociology from Virginia, Felker got his start coaching at St. Catherine McAuley High School in Portland, Maine and shortly thereafter was named head coach of the Westbrook Seals Swim Club in Westbrook, Maine, coaching the squad from 2003-2011. In the summer of 2010, Felker was hired as the head coach of the Seacoast Swimming Association in Dover, N.H. In total, he has produced over 30 sectional qualifiers, four junior national qualifiers, and one senior national and Olympic trial qualifier.

MARTY SCARANO

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS PENN STATE ’78 - 14th Season The 2013-14 academic year marks the 14th year Marty Scarano is serving as the Director of Athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academics, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of UNH athletes during the 2012-13 academic year was 87 percent among 20 varsity sports. Additionally, the NCAA honored five Wildcat teams that scored a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 1,000. The UNH teams include: men’s skiing, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field and gymnastics. Men’ soccer and women’s lacrosse were ranked at the top in America East with scores of 985 and 991, respectively. The football team and men’s ice hockey team were runners-up in their respective conferences, registering scores of 991 and 978. Women’s swimming & diving posted the second-highest score among all New Hampshire sports with a 994 mark. In the America East Academic Cup, UNH finished second for the third time in the last four years by achieving a 3.18 cumulative grade point average. It is UNH’s highest GPA in the 18-year history of the award. New Hampshire led all institutions with 108 student-athletes on the 2012 America East Fall Academic Honor Roll while earning the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the 2012-13 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. New Hampshire had 155 honorees, which represented 72 percent of the student-athletes who competed in those seasons, an improvement of 10 percent from the previous year. Scarano has helped elevate UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, the University has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. The Wildcat athletic department has played host to highly successful NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regionals at the Verizon Wireless Arena (Manchester, N.H.) in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. UNH was host of the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four at the Whittemore Center in 2002 and 2005. In addition, UNH successfully hosted the 2007 NCAA Skiing Championships in Washington Valley as well as the 2005 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional at the Whittemore Center Arena. The women’s hockey team played in the first outdoor game in the history of NCAA women’s hockey in 2010 at the Sun Life Frozen Fenway game and defeated Northeastern, while the men’s squad played in the 2012 Sun Life Frozen Fenway game against Maine. Football also competed in Colonial Clash games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., in 2010 and 2011; the Wildcats were victorious on both occasions against UMass. During Scarano’s tenure, UNH teams have made 44 NCAA postseason appearances and captured 14 conference titles. Gymnastics has participated in 12 NCAA tournaments, leading all programs over that span. Men’s hockey holds a pair of Hockey East titles and has made 11 trips to the NCAA tournament, including Frozen Four appearances in 2002 and 2003. The football program has qualified for the NCAA FCS postseason for a nation-leading nine consecutive seasons and advanced to the quarterfinals six times during the streak. Women’s ice hockey has seen NCAA action five times with two Frozen Four appearances. The squad also captured consecutive Hockey East Championships from 2006-09. The field hockey team captured its second-ever America East crown in 2011 en route to its second national tournament appearance. Volleyball has made a pair of NCAA appearances after capturing back-to-back conference titles in 2002 and 2003. Women’s lacrosse has earned a pair of NCAA berths (2004, 2008), one coming after an America East championship victory in 2004. Additionally, 24 head or assistant coaches have won 65 “Coach of the Year” awards during Scarano’s tenure, ranging from conference coach of the year to New England and Northeast Regional Coach of the Year honors. Furthermore, head football coach Sean McDonnell garnered the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year by The Sports Network in 2005 after a stellar 11-2 campaign.

There has been over $10 million in capital improvements since Scarano’s hiring in the summer of 2000. In the spring of 2013, the artificial turf surface was replaced at Memorial Field, home of the Wildcat field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams. The project had an estimated cost of $850,000. The athletic training room in the UNH Field House was completely renovated over the winter break of the 2012-13 academic year. With a redesigned layout, energy-efficient lighting and state-of-the art equipment, the athletic training room is larger, more comfortable, enjoyable and efficient for studentathletes and staff. In the summer of 2013, a new scoreboard at Bremner Field, home of the UNH men’s and women’s soccer programs, was installed in the fall of 2013 at a cost of $20,000. In 2012, a new scoreboard was installed at Cowell Stadium, and the football locker room received a facelift; changes included a new lighting system while a 55-inch flat-screen TV and Fathead-designed murals featuring former players and UNH historical images were added to the walls. A memorial of Todd Walker was also added in honor of the former Wildcat wide receiver who suffered an untimely and heroic death in March of 2011. In the summer of 2007, the Cowell Stadium grass field was replaced with a $1 million FieldTurf synthetic surface. As part of a $650,000 renovation project in the summer of 2011, the field turf at Bremner Field was replaced with a new surface used by many varsity teams and for student recreational activities. In the fall of 2008, the Paul Sweet Oval renovation was completed to include new surfaces, lighting, painting, infrastructure upgrades and the replacement of windows that existed in the original architecture. The total cost of the project exceeded $500,000. Additionally in 2007, a complete renovation of Lundholm Gymnasium was undertaken. The $600,000 overhaul included a new bleacher system, new scoreboards, competition baskets and other aesthetic enhancements. In 2007, Scarano was awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Additionally, Scarano was also named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano has also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and is currently on the America East Executive Council. Most recently, Scarano was a member of the Hockey East restructuring team that successfully recruited Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut to the conference. Outside of athletics, Scarano is in his 11th year on the Board of Corporators at Canterbury Shaker Village, a non-profit museum located in Canterbury, N.H. Before arriving at the University of New Hampshire, Scarano held the position of Athletics Director at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced several All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have three children: daughter, Lynden; son, Kyle, a junior at UNH; and son, Corey, a freshman at UNH.

MARK HUDDLESTON

PRESIDENT UNIVERSITY of NEW HAMPSHIRE Mark W. Huddleston became the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire in July 2007, bringing three decades of experience in public and private education as a faculty member, dean, and senior administrator. Huddleston has been a strong advocate for increasing affordability and accessibility in higher education, and has argued that we need to rethink much of what we do to protect our core missions, and to ensure that higher education remains vital and financially sustainable in the 21st century. In February 2010, he presented a 10-year strategic plan for UNH, the result of an intensive collaboration between faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the University’s wider communities. Emphasizing innovation and entrepreneurship, the plan is helping to guide the University’s response to a historic state budget cut passed by the 2011 New Hampshire Legislature. “The strategic plan commits us to finding new ways to teach, learn, discover, create, and engage in the 21st century—and positions UNH to become a national leader in the redefinition of American higher education,” Huddleston says. Huddleston was raised in Syracuse, N.Y., and was the first member of his family ever to attend college. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York-Buffalo, and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He began his academic career at SUNY-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the University of Delaware, where he served for the next 24 years. There, he chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and served as associate provost for international programs. In 2001, he was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, overseeing 45 academic departments and centers with nearly 900 full-time faculty and staff, and serving in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been a consultant for both the U.S. government and international organizations. He also served as an adviser in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. Huddleston is chair of the Presidents Council of the America East Conference, an incorporator of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Speedway Children’s Charities. Huddleston and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate, and Giles.

Athletic excellence is one-half the formula for success in the collegiate experience for University of New Hampshire swimmers. The primary measure of achievement is the student-athlete’s success in the classroom. For the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 academic years, UNH was awarded the America East Academic Cup for recording the highest GPA in the conference. In both the Fall 2004 and Winter/Spring 2005 semesters, UNH placed the highest number of student-athletes on the America East Honor Roll; the University accomplished the feat again in Fall ‘06, Fall ‘09, Fall ‘11 and Fall ‘12. New Hampshire also boasts one of the top graduation rates in the country. UNH is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the student-athletes give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of academic support services that is available to all student-athletes. This program includes the monitoring of academic progress and providing tutorial services, as well as interacting with the academic advisors within Joanne Carly Brandon the various colleges. Maldari Barbato Thomas Serving as Student-Athlete Support Coordinator is Assistant Athletic for Academic Support Director Joanne Maldari, a 1990 graduate of Holy Cross who went on to earn her master’s degree in Athletic Counseling at Springfield College. She was recognized for her outstanding efforts at UNH by receiving the University’s 2001 Academic Advising Award. Before coming to Durham, Maldari served athletic counseling internships at Springfield and Central Connecticut State University. Carly Barbato was appointed as the Coordinator of Student-Athlete Academic Support during the Fall of 2013. Earning her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor of Exercise Science at St. Lawrence University in 2007, she was a four-year letterwinner as a goalkeeper, earning Liberty League Honorable Mention in her final two seasons. Additionally, she was named a co-captain in her senior season. Barbato also earned her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership at Loyola University of Maryland in 2009 while working as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s soccer team. At UNH, she will provide comprehensive support services to student-athletes, mentoring, counseling, and proactive monitoring. Furthermore, she will tutor and meet one-on-one with academically “at risk” student-athletes. Barbato will serve as a liaison between prospective student-athletes and families during the recruiting process regarding the academic services UNH offers. Before her current position, she served as an assistant coach for women’s soccer team at UNH as well an academic center supervisor and tutor. In the dual role, accoladesincluded: CoSIDA Capital One All-Academic All America District 1 First Team (2012), America East All-Academic Team (2012), America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2010) and Defensive Most Valuable Player (2010). Furthermore, the women’s soccer team cumulative grade point average never fell below a 3.0 during her tenure as assistant coach. Brandon Thomas was appointed as an academic coordinator during August of 2013. He is a two-time graduate from Winthrop University earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in English (2010) and a Master’s of Science in Sport & Fitness Administration (2012). Before coming to New Hampshire, Thomas worked in the athletic departments at the University of North Dakota and Belmont Abbey College.

Student-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT Cathleen “Cathy” Coakley enters her sixth year as director of Student Athlete Development at the University of New Hampshire. Coakley oversees

a comprehensive educational program designed to enhance the personal/ professional development and welfare of UNH student athletes. The many areas of student athlete development include first year (Freshmen, transfer) behavioral education, Sophomore to Senior leadership and life skill development, community service projects and advising SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Committee), the leadership group comprised of members from all 18 athletic teams. In addition, she has established and continues to expand networks and liaison relationships with other departments, organizations and resources across campus. Coakley has an extensive career in college athletics and higher education. Prior to her return to UNH, she was an instructor of Sport Marketing in the Kinesiology Department at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. Her curriculum included personal development, life skills, professional/ career skill inventory and assessment. She coordinated all practicums and internships required of Sport Management majors. While at JMU she served as Assistant Field Hockey Coach (2005- 2007) helping to rebuild the program and guiding the Dukes to a CAA Conference championship and NCAA appearance in 2007. Prior to her tenure at JMU, Coakley was a college basketball coach. She started her collegiate career at UNH as an assistant coach, then moved on to become the Head Coach at Fordham University in New York City.

Jon Luszcz was appointed as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in May 2013. He will serve as the primary contact for the Wildcats’ volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving programs. He will also assist the department in the promotion and media relations for all 20 varsity sports. A native of Nashua, N.H., Jon graduated from Endicott College in 2012 with a B.S. in Sports Management and a minor in Business Administration. In his senior year, he interned with the Harvard University Office of Athletic Communications and worked with a variety of the 41 sports offered along with website management and media relations. Additionally, he was among the media relations staff for the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships, which was held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. Most recently, Jon served as the Sport Information Assistant at Union (N.Y.) for the 2012-13 academic year. At Union, he was the primary contact for the NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey program, as well as the NCAA Division III sports of men and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s track & field and baseball.

Jon Luszcz

Jon Dana has been involved with University of New Hampshire athletic program since 1984. He began his career as an assistant athletic trainer and was promoted to men’s head athletic trainer in 1987 and head athletic trainer for the entire program in 1989. In 2001, he was named UNH’s Director of Sports Medicine. In addition to overseeing operations and supervising the Sports Medicine staff, Dana works specifically with the football and ski teams. The Sports Medicine Department at the University of New Hampshire consists of eight full- and part-time certified and licensed athletic trainers. The department works out of two locations – the Field House and the Whittemore Center. Both athletic training rooms utilize currently available modalities, including muscle stimulators, ultrasound, heat, cryotherapy, and hydrotherapy. The athletic training room in the UNH Field House was completely renovated over the winter break of the 2012-13 academic year. With a redesigned layout, energy-efficient lighting and state-ofthe art equipment, the athletic training room is larger, more comfortable, enjoyable and efficient for student-athletes Jon and staff. The Certified Athletic Trainer provides a myriad of services to the department and the student-athlete. These include, but are not limited to, initial injury assessment and management, emergency injury/illness management, referral to appropriate professionals, interface with associated physicians and others, rehabilitation, counseling, administrative duties, including insurance coordination, supervision of practices and games, development and implementation of emergency plans, as well as student athletic trainer supervision. The athletic training room is considered to be “a designated facility where comprehensive health care services are provided. Comprehensive health care services include practice and game preparation, injury/illness evaluation, first aid and emergency care, follow-up care, rehabilitation and related services.” (National Athletic Trainer’s Association Education Council). Dana is well respected in the athletic training field. His international experience includes: working at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing with the U.S. Canoe/Kayak team; working for the USA Canoe/Kayak teams at the World Cup in Prague, Slovenia, Augsburg and Germany; working at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens; working for the U.S. Men’s Team Handball squad at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic; and working with the U.S. Track and Field Team at the Paralympics World Championships in Lille, France. Additionally, he has worked at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento, Calif., and at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. Since 1980, Dana has worked as an athletic trainer at the Boston Marathon. Dana has been Team Captain of the Finish Line Medical Area since 1996. Dana has served as Drug Testing Site Coordinator and Head Athletic Trainer at various NCAA championship events, including men’s and women’s ice hockey, and skiing. Dana is certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and is a licensed athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. In addition, Dana has a CPR Re-Certification and a Massachusetts Teacher Certification in physical education, health and science.

Strength & Conditioning

Paul Chapman is in his 12th year as the director of strength and conditioning at the University of New Hampshire in 2013-14. Chapman helped coordinate the building of the state-of-the-art Jerry Azumah Performance Center in 2003 and has guided UNH student-athletes to NCAA appearances in both women’s and men’s ice hockey, football, gymnastics, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, skiing and track and field. Chapman is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (strength and conditioning coach certified), USA Weightlifting (certified level 1 coach), the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and he was the state director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in North Dakota from 1991-95. In 2005, he earned the title of Master Paul John Strength and Conditioning Coach from the CSCCA. He has also authored four publications related to strength and conditioning and has trained and consulted several NFL, CFL and NHL athletes, and C hapman C iani prospective athletes preparing for all-star games, bowl games and pre-draft testing. Prior to UNH, Chapman was the director of strength and conditioning for the University of North Dakota from 1992-2001 and served there on an interim basis during the 1991-92 season. His efforts were an integral part of a winning tradition at UND, as the football team was the Division II national champions in 2001, the men’s ice hockey team won a Division I national title in 2000 and 1997 and the women’s basketball team was the Division II national champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Chapman is a 1990 graduate of Dickinson State University in North Dakota with a B.S. degree in Biology. He then went on to earn at M.S. in Exercise Science from North Dakota in 1994. An outstanding college athlete, Chapman was inducted into the Dickinson State Athletic Hall of Fame for his efforts on the football field. He was a two-time All-America First Team selection as well as an All-America Second Team honoree in his four-year playing career. Upon graduation, he was a fourthround draft choice of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League, where he played for two seasons. John Ciani is in his 12th season with the UNH athletic department during the 2012-13 academic year. After four years as an assistant coach in the University’s strength and conditioning office, Ciani was promoted to the position of Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning in 2006. Ciani’s efforts have been key in guiding UNH studentathletes to NCAA appearances in both men’s and women’s ice hockey, football, gymnastics, women’s volleyball, women’s lacrosse, skiing and track and field. Coach Ciani is very passionate about his commitment to strength and conditioning. He has taken his wide range of experiences to come up with a distinct sport-specific training philosophy. In conjunction with the coaching staff, Ciani develops individualized training programs depending on the athlete’s initial evaluation, experience level and current athletic ability. Under Ciani’s program, improvement is not based on the weight on the bar, but rather how injury resistant the studentathlete is and his/her athletic performance. Strength and conditioning programs designed by Ciani utilize all facets of training, from conventional strength training and Olympic Weightlifting to simple conditioning and sport-specific metabolic runs that enhance the athlete’s abilities during competition. No single training style dominates the program; Ciani uses a combination of all training techniques for the total development of the student-athlete. Ciani was a featured speaker at the Vermont State Clinic for the National Strength & Conditioning Association in June 2010. The Sports Performance clinic, which was held at the University of Vermont Varsity Weight Room, was attended by athletic trainers strength coaches, personal trainers, and other fitness professionals across the New England area. In addition to Ciani, the clinic included presentations from strength coaches from Boston College, Dartmouth and Boston University. Ciani, a native of the San Diego, Calif. area, came to UNH after a stint as assistant strength coach at the University of North Dakota. During his tenure at UND, Ciani worked primarily with the 2001 Division II national championship football team, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams. In 2000, he began his career at Long Beach State as a graduate assistant working with the perennial national power women’s volleyball team, where he trained many All-American and national team level volleyball players, including Misty May. Ciani received his B.A. degree in Psychology from Long Beach State and attended graduate school at both Long Beach State and the University of North Dakota. John lives in Berwick, Maine with his wife, Angela and son, Brennan.

The 2013-14 University of New Hampshire women’s swimming & diving team eagerly awaits the opportunity to defend its 2013 America East crown. New Hampshire seeks to repeat conference titles, which it previously accomplished going back-to-back in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Hailing from four different countries with a bona fide core of veterans and newcomers possessing great potential, the Wildcats strive to exceed last year’s accolades. 2012-13 Season: Last season was another decorated season from the program, taking its fifth America East crown, setting six records and earning Swimmer of the Year in both America East and the ECAC. Additionally, the Wildcats were ranked as high as 19th in Division I en route to a record-setting 858-point performance at the conference championships. The ‘Cats topped off a remarkable season by sending two Katie Mann Jenni Roberts student-athletes to the NCAA Championships at Indiana University. Representing UNH was America East Swimmer of the Year and ECAC co-Swimmer of the Year Jenni Roberts (Springvale, Maine) and ECAC co-Swimmer of the Year Katie Mann (Prince George, B.C.). The pair performed admirably at the championships. Mann posted a personal best in the 200-yard individual medley, posting a time of 2:00.99. Roberts put forth strong performances in the three-day event. The Wildcats welcome back for his 21st season head coach Josh Willman. The Miami (FL) graduate returns associate head coach Jarrod Zwirko for his sixth season and third year volunteer assistant coach Jared Felker. Spearheading the diving team this season, the staff welcomes Robin Kamil for her first year at New Hampshire. Collectively, the UNH swimming & diving coaches were bestowed America East Coach of the Year awards for the fourth consecutive year last season. Seniors: The Class of 2014 senior class returns five swimmers this season: Jenna Bull (Woodstock, New Josh Willman Brunswick), Bernadette Byrne (Braintree, Mass.), Katie Keefer (Waynesboro, Va.), Lauren McCandless (Macungie, Pa.) and Roberts. Bull was part of the record setting quartet, breaking the 800-yard freestyle relay time at the America East Championships, clocking in at 7:17.68. Byrne, a two-time America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll mention, provides depth in the butterfly and freestyle events. Keefer also provides depth performing in the backstroke and freestyle events. The defending champion and record holder in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the America East Championships, McCandless seeks to cap off an already decorated career. Most recently, the cellular and molecular biology major joined the National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Sigma Alpha this past season. Roberts looks to trump her junior season, named America East Swimmer of the Year and ECAC Swimmer of the Year. When she was the 2012 United States Olympic Trial participant and the economics major set five records last season and represented UNH at the NCAA Championships. Juniors: Boasting the largest group of swimmers, the junior class brings back nine swimmers for the 2013-14 season. Coming off a NCAA Championship appearance, ECAC co-swimmer of the year Mann headlines the group. The English major set the meet record for the 200-yard breaststroke at the America East championships, recording a time of 2:14.18. Additionally, the Canadian World Trials placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard IM at the conference championships. Mann is joined by fellow America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll award members Nicole Anderson (Dover, N.H.), Oneida Cooper (Johannesburg, South Africa), Emily Magnavita (South Glastonburg, Conn.), Megan Suffel (Cornwall, Ontario) and Kathryn Violette (Portland, Maine). Magnavita helped her relay team touch the wall first vs. Northeastern (3:35.04). In addition to her relay performance, she gives New Hampshire added flexibility, as she competes in the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle along with the 200-yard medley relay. Performing in the backstroke and freestyle events, Anderson placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke at the America East Championship, touching the wall at 57.30, a personal best 57.30. Cooper took first place in the 100-yard backstroke vs. Boston College (1:00.27) and tallied two first place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke. In addition to being a member of the four-time 200-yard medley relay and two-time victorious 400-yard freestyle relay, Suffel powered her relay team to a runner-up finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the America East Championship. Violette provides depth in relay events in addition to competing in the butterfly. Additionally, the junior class welcomes back twins, Adria Morales (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Allison Morales (Santa Clarita, Calif.) for their second season with the Wildcats. Adria placed first in the 1,000yard freestyle vs. Rhode Island in addi-

tion to competing consistently in both butterfly and backstroke races this past season. Allison put together a solid 2012 campaign, aiding the 200-yard medley relay to a first place finish over Boston College (1:49.18). Kyle Bonus (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Nicole Zahka (Medway Mass.) make up the diving duo for the upcoming season. Bonus set a new career high on the three-meter board, registering a mark of 209.10, while Zahka seeks to improve her marks for her third season at New Hampshire.

Sophomores: Bettina Caspersen (Lyngby, Germany) is the lone representative of the sophomore class. A two-time silver medalist at the Danish National Championships, Caspersen will seek to improve her marks in the freestyle and medley disciplines this season. Last season, she touched the wall first in the 200-yard medley against Vermont, earning a time of 1:50.08. Freshmen: New to the ’Cats, Christine Black (Amherst, N.H.), Sarah Broderick (Newburyport, Mass.), Emily Giambastini (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Lauren Marsden (Washington, D.C.) and Sarah Olver (Milwaukee, Wis.) are raring to make their mark. Black set two league records and was a seven-time finalist at the New England Senior Open meets with Souhegan. A three-time Massachusetts state champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, Broderick is the record holder of six different events at Haverhill. Giambastini was an All-American mention and record holder in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle events at Acalanes. Marsden was a four-time qualifier for the National Catholics Award Winner at Arch Bishop Spaulding while Olver represented Whitefish Bay at the WIAA State Meet on three occasions. Schedule: The Wildcats will compete against nine teams in dual meets this season as well as participating in the Terrier Invitational. The first dual meet will take place on the road, as UNH visits Atlantic Coast Conference member Boston College on Saturday, Oct. 12. New Hampshire returns home for swimming & diving family & alumni weekend as the Wildcats play host to Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 19. The following weekend, UNH and Northeastern compete in Swasey Pool for a heads-up match slated for Saturday, Oct. 26. New Hampshire begins its longest stretch away from Durham, N.H., as UNH competes against Northeast Conference foes Bryant and host Central Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 2. The ‘Cats remain in New England the following week as Rhode Island hosts New Hampshire’s last dual meet of the 2013 year on Saturday, Nov. 9. In the final event of 2013, New Hampshire takes part in the threeday Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, a new member of the Patriot League, starting Nov. 22. After the holiday break and a training trip to Winter Park, Fla., the Wildcats ramp up action against a pair of Ivy League opponents. In-state rival Dartmouth plays host to UNH on Friday, Jan. 17 and the ‘Cats return to Swasey Pool to clash with Yale on Friday, Jan. 24. New Hampshire concludes its final dual meet of the season at Maine, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31. New Hampshire then moves onto the America East Championships, which are slated for a four-day event beginning Thursday, Feb. 13. The following week, individuals will have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the ECAC Championships in a three-day meet starting Friday, Feb. 21. This year’s NCAA women’s swimming & diving championships takes place at the University Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota from March 20-23. Under the tutelage of Willman, New Hampshire has won five America East titles and two ECAC championships. In addition, Willman and his staff at UNH have earned 12 America East Coach of the Year titles and ECAC Coach of the Year three times. Individually, UNH swimmers have achieved 33 major conference awards including 21 Swimmers of the Year (16 America East and 5 ECAC), six America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year, four Rookie of the Year and two Senior High Point Coaches awards. During Willman’s tenure, 342 swimmers have been crowned America East champions and 103 have been named ECAC champions. In total, Wildcat swimmers have broken over 242 school records, 90 America East records and 23 ECAC records.
