New Haven graduated its top two scorers from last season and will lean on senior Robert Jamerson to guide the offensive attack. Jamerson finished third on the team in scoring a year ago, averaging 10.6 points per game. The 6-foot-5 Forestville, Md. native will not only spearhead the offense, but will be a key component on the defensive side of the ball as well. Jamerson led the team in steals with 27 and averaged 6.3 rebounds per game in the 2009-10 season.

Freshmen Krystian Foriest and Allen D’Auria will join Jamerson and Ustunel in the front court this year. Foriest, a forward from Bronx, N.Y., attended Wings Academy where he led the squad to back-toback Bronx Boro Championships. In his final season with the program, he was named to the All-City and All-Bronx Conference teams. D’Auria, a local player from the East Haven High School basketball team, brings a physical presence down low to the squad.

HISTORY & RECORDS

The Chargers will welcome six newcomers to New Haven for the 2010-11 season. All six student-athletes will be playing in their first collegiate basketball season.

The Schedule The Chargers kickoff the 2010-11 regular season on Saturday, November 13 when they travel to Mercy College for a non-conference affair. Four days later, UNH begins its quest for the Northeast-10 Conference title with its home opener against American International College at Charger Gymnasium. Another big mark on the schedule is a home game on Saturday, December 4 against Pace University. New Haven will host High School Team Day at Charger Gymnasium with all the action beginning at 1:30 p.m. The New Year opens with back-to-back road game before returning home. On Saturday, January 8, the Chargers welcome the University of Massachusetts Lowell to campus for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. In addition, the University Of New Haven Department Of Athletics will host Faculty, Staff and Student Day and Subway Day at Charger Gymnasium. All fans in attendance will receive a free six-inch sub, courtesy of our local Subway. On Sunday, January 16, prior to the game against Stonehill College at 3:30 p.m., UNH will host its Annual Alumni event. The Chargers wrap up their regular season home schedule with a pair of games against Le Moyne College and Adelphi University. Against the Dolphins on Saturday, February 12, New Haven will raise awareness for Breast Cancer with its Pink Zone game, followed by Senior Night on Wednesday, February 23 against the Panthers. The 2010-11 NE-10 Champion will be crowned on Saturday, March 5 in the conference championship game.

2009-10 REVIEW

Jeremy Williams, Sean Harris, Mike Stys and Mark Palmieri represent the sophomore class for the Chargers. Williams played in all 27 games for UNH, including 15 starts last season. He averaged 3.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per outing last year. Williams also proved to be very efficient with the basketball in his hands, only turning the ball over 29 times on the campaign. Harris, a guard out of Mount Vernon, N.Y., will likely share time in the backcourt with Williams. He had a solid freshman year with the Chargers, averaging 5.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Harris appeared in 23 games and registered eight starts, accumulating 418 (18.2 mpg) minutes on the court. Stys and Palmieri each made 13 appearances last season. Stys poured in 4.1 points and one rebound per game, while Palmieri averaged about one point per contest and was 3-of-7 (43 percent) from behind the arc.

Selected 16th in the NE-10 preseason coaches’ poll, the Chargers hope to improve upon that position in their third NE-10 season. If the team stays healthy and the newcomers learn the system, the Chargers will be able to compete amongst the elite in the conference.

2010-11 OUTLOOK

Senior Shawn Ustunel will be alongside Jamerson to provide leadership and experience to the young group. The 6-foot-8 forward made 23 appearances last season, averaging 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. Ustunel will look to make more of a presence down low, as his .500 shooting percentage was among the leaders on the squad. He registered a season-high eight points when the Chargers traveled to American International College early on in the campaign.

Atkins, Jr., a 5-foot-10 guard out of Piscataway, N.J., averaged 12 points, eight assists and four steals in his last season with his high school team. As a senior, he was named to the All-Middlesex Conference Third Team and was selected the GMC All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player. Sanders, a 6-foot-2 guard from Trumbull, Conn., is an athletic wing player that can create havoc with his speed and quickness.

2010-11 PLAYERS

Hotaling and his staff will be coaching an inexperienced team this season, with more than half of the 12-player roster as newcomers to UNH. Furthermore, Hotaling has added two new coaches to the team in assistant coach Tobe Carberry and graduate assistant Marcus Wellman. The two coaches have great affiliation with the Northeast-10 Conference, with Carberry previously serving as the top assistant coach at Southern Connecticut and Wellman recently graduating from Franklin Pierce University.

A quartet of newcomers, Ashanti DePass, Justin Exum, Jeffery Adkins, Jr. and Julian Sanders, are expected to make an immediate impact for the Chargers backcourt this season. DePass comes to New Haven from Baldwin, N.Y. where he played three seasons with the Bruins varsity basketball team. In his senior season, DePass was named the Long Island All-Star Game’s Most Valuable Player, recording a game-high 21 points in the contest. Exum, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Brooklyn, N.Y., spent his last four seasons with the Xaverian High School Clippers. In his final season with the squad, Exum averaged 21.4 points per game and was awarded All-Brooklyn and All-City laurels. He also surpassed 1000 points in a Clippers uniform.

2010-11 COACHES

The 2010-11 edition of the University of New Haven men’s basketball team looks to return to its winning formula of the past with a squad that returns six letter-winners from last season. The Chargers are coming off their second campaign in the Northeast-10 Conference and enter the upcoming season with a new face in charge. First year head coach Ted Hotaling accepted the New Haven job on March 31, 2010 after spending five seasons with the Eastern Kentucky University basketball program.

The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 30th year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II. The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of 30 Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of science in physical education, Chin earned her Master’s of science degree in physical education from UNCGreensboro.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the department of intercollegiate athletics is to support the mission of the university and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. The department will provide growth opportunities to achieve in a nationally competitive intercollegiate program that attracts, nurtures and graduates student-athletes who under the guidance of a quality staff, represent the University of New Haven with character and integrity while achieving academic excellence, serving the community and pursuing excellence in their respective sports. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.
