LAURA DUNCAN

2010 PLAYERS

Laura Duncan, now the fifth coach in program history, will serve as head coach for the Chargers this year. Duncan comes to UNH with over five years of Division I coaching experience at Fairfield University.

2009 REVIEW

2010 OUTLOOK

Most recently, Duncan served five seasons as an assistant for the Fairfield University women’s soccer team. Duncan was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, recruiting and game-day and practice coordination. While at Fairfield, the Stags made two NCAA Tournament appearances (2005 & 2008) and twice were crowned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions (2005 & 2008). During her tenure, the Stags made five-straight postseason appearances, while two student-athletes earned MAAC Player of the Year honors.

HISTORY & RECORDS

Duncan graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 2005 and was a four-year letter winner for the Blue Devils. She helped Central Connecticut to three consecutive Northeast Conference Championships and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

THE UNIVERSITY

Duncan saw action in 57 games during her collegiate career. As a junior, the defender helped the Blue Devils to 16 wins, including 10 shutouts and a 1-0 victory over Boston College in the First Round 4 4

of the NCAA Tournament. Following that season, she was named Third Team All-Northeast Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the SoccerBuzz AllNortheast Region First Team, and New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association First Team All-New England. During her career she was also a two-time NEC First Team AllConference selection. “We are very excited to welcome Laura to the Charger family. During our search, it was important for the committee to find a well-rounded candidate who could continue the success of our women’s soccer program,” said Director of Athletics Deborah Chin at the time of Duncan’s hire. “We believe her exceptional background makes her a perfect fit for the program.”

CHARGER SOCCER 2010 COACHES 2010 PLAYERS 2010 OUTLOOK 2009 REVIEW HISTORY & RECORDS THE UNIVERSITY

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK The prospects are favorable for an impressive 2010 campaign for the New Haven Chargers women’s soccer team. Following a 10-7-3 season in 2009, in which the squad nearly upset the No. 3 nationally ranked team in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, all signs point to the continuation of a strong upward climb. The Chargers return 14 players from last year’s team, including four senior-class members whom will conclude their careers at New Haven. In addition, first-year head coach Laura Duncan, will lead the way for this experienced group. Duncan remarks, “This year’s season will be a new and exciting one for our team with so many new additions to strengthen the squad. Our goal is to work hard to combine the two large groups of players to be the toughest and the hardest working team in the NE10 to play against.” Goalkeeper Junior Kim Taylor had a great 2009 campaign between the posts for the Chargers. The Patchogue, N.Y. native posted a microscopic 1.06 goals against average to go along with a .764 save percentage. In addition, she collected career-highs in wins (10), shutouts (7) and goals against, only allowing 21 shots into the net. Taylor will look to improve upon a fantastic sophomore season and will see much of the action in 2010. The newcomer to the group is Breanna Brown, a talented freshman from Delran High School. Defense The Chargers will look to duplicate last year’s backline as their defense surrendered just 21 goals in 20 games. However, with two defenders graduating, New Haven will need to rely on a few younger talents to complete the squad. Leading the way is senior captain Claire Siekaniec, an All-Northeast-10 Conference honoree and a NSCAA Division II All-East Region selection, only a year ago. Siekaniec started in all 20 games for the Chargers and tallied the game-winning goal in a 4-3 overtime victory at Adelphi. Joining Siekaniec in the backfield are senior Carly Yamauchi, junior Ali Espanol and sophomore Lauren Primovic. Espanol and Yamauchi combined to play in all 20 games for the Chargers, each registering 10 starts. The duo chipped in offensively as well, combining for a goal and an assist. Primovic will be asked to convert to a defender for the upcoming campaign. Primovic appeared at midfield in every game last year, including 16 starts for UNH. Juniors Holly Michaud and Mary Kitsis and freshman Amanda Hathaway will also look to earn minutes in the New Haven defense. Midfield The Chargers return two key components from their midfield in 2009. Seniors Holly Dawson and Meabh De Burca return this year with plenty of experience on the pitch. Dawson set the26 UNH single-season assist record in 2007 and will look to

26

join the offensive attack a tad more in 2010. De Burca made 13 appearances and seven starts for the squad last season. Sophomores Shannon Morales and Gabby Fuentes and newcomers Danielle Iacono, Brenna Weidman, Alexa Seidenfeld and Jordan Lipner-Riza will compete for playing time this season. Forward Senior Emily Buckley-Matura will be called upon to lead the Chargers attack. Buckley-Matura finished 2009 with eight goals and five assists for a total of 21 points. The highlight of her campaign came in the second game of the season against Post, when she recorded her first career hattrick in a 6-0 victory. Sophomore Lucy Francisco, a 2009 All-Northeast-10 Conference Rookie Team selection, was right behind Buckley-Matura, accumulating 16 points on six goals and four assists. Newcomers Tami Vargas, Maria Gigante, Monica Yanez and Anna-Kay Robinson and Torrie Hoover will look to provide assistance off-the-bench for the Chargers. The Schedule The Chargers open the season on Friday, September 3 with a non-conference matchup on the road against Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y. Two days later, New Haven is back in action with its home-opener against Post University at Kayo Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Following its contest against the Eagles, UNH will head to NSCAA Division II Preseason No. 11 Franklin Pierce for its first conference match against the Ravens at 6:00 p.m. Other highlights of the season include contests with Merrimack College, Southern Connecticut State University, Saint Rose and Saint Michael’s. The Chargers will host Merrimack College on Sunday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m. which will serve as High School Recruit Day at UNH. On Tuesday, September 21, UNH will host Five Guys Day, an event in which free Five Guys gift cards will be given away at the Chargers game against Southern Connecticut State University. On Wednesday, October, 13, NSCAA Division II Preseason No. 3 Saint Rose heads down to New Haven, Conn. on Faculty Appreciation Day. The Chargers will take on the Golden Knights at 4:15 p.m. UNH wraps up the regular season with two home games at Kayo Field on Sunday, October 24 and Wednesday, October 27. Prior to their match against Saint Michael’s on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., the Chargers will honor their seniorclass members at Kayo Field. Later in the week on Wednesday, the Chargers will host Subway Day when Adelphi comes to town. All fans in attendance will receive a free six-inch grinder, courtesy of Subway.

The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

2009 REVIEW

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of 36 Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of science in physical education, Chin earned her Master’s of science degree in physical education from UNCGreensboro.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was

UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the department of intercollegiate athletics is to support the mission of the university and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. The department will provide growth opportunities to achieve in a nationally competitive intercollegiate program that attracts, nurtures and graduates student-athletes who under the guidance of a quality staff, represent the University of New Haven with character and integrity while achieving academic excellence, serving the community and pursuing excellence in their respective sports. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 seventeen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies. • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987. • The football program appeared in four NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
