“Growing up in a highly sports involved family where academics was very important, allowed me to understand early that prioritizing and balancing my responsibilities and extracurricular activities would be essential to my success. Therefore, when it came time for me to decide where to go to college, the choice was easy. I Chose the University of New Haven because I knew it not only had my academic program of interest, but it was a Division II institution and quite successful in women’s volleyball. These qualities made UNH stand above the rest. After doing more research, I realized that Division II athletics were greatly concerned with balancing time demands by emphasizing the “Life in the Balance.” When I looked at the whole picture, picking a University that not only embraced the D-II values, but worked on actually implementing and bettering those values seemed most suitable for me. I knew that I would be able to continue to improve my time management skills, study Biology and play women’s volleyball at the next level. All of this is why I Chose Division II and the University of New Haven.” #11 Elizabeth Akinbiyi, Junior

2010 PREVIEW
The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team enters the 2010 season with high expectations. Coming off a perfect 15-0 season in the Northeast-10 Conference and its 24th appearance to the NCAA Tournament, the Chargers return eight members of its 25 win campaign in 2009. An experienced core will lead the attack, including senior All-American and 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Sara Malmlov, junior Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Year and All-Conference selection, Chelsey Alpough and the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year, Keidy Candelaria. In addition to the wealth of the talent on the court, Robin Salters returns to the helm for her 17th season with the program. A six-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coach of the Year, she continues to be amongst the top active Division II coaches in the nation and is extremely excited for this season. “Statistically we had a really good year last year; however we were young and inexperienced. At times those two aspects proved to hurt when we would struggle from behind or were unable to put teams away. With the core of the team returning and some talented new student-athletes, expectations are as high as ever”, says Salters. Offense The 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Year, Alpough will once again run the offensive attack this season. Alpough collected several accolades last season, including AVCA and Daktronics All-East Region team selections. Despite missing four sets in 18
2009, Alpough started in 27 matches and finished third in the NE-10 with 992 assists, averaging just fewer than 10 assists per outing. The highlight of her season came in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals when she recorded a career-high 55 assists against Southern Connecticut State University in Lowell, Mass. She will have several talented options to dish the ball to, including senior Sara Malmlov and sophomore Keidy Candelaria. This duo of outside hitters led the team offensively in 2009 and will be looked to again to set the pace for the Chargers in 2010. After an outstanding season in 2009, Malmlov, an AVCA and Daktronics All-America honoree, returns to the court for her final season at UNH. As a junior, Malmlov appeared in 30 matches and led the NE-10 with 436 kills for a 3.86 kills per game average. Her individual season-highlight came at Bentley when Malmlov recorded a season-high 22 kills en route to a 3-2 Chargers victory. The 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year also collected double-digit kills in all-but two matches last season. Alongside of Malmlov on the outside will be sophomore sensation Keidy Candelaria. Candelaria was named to the Northeast-10 Conference First Team as well as being tabbed as Rookie of the Year last season, accumulating 379 kills and 58 aces, both good enough for sixth and seventh places respectively in the league. Janeeka Benson will direct a young but talented group on the right side this year. Benson joined the attack in 77 sets last season, registering 62 kills and 14 assists. The highlight of her campaign came against Southern Connecticut State University in

The Schedule The Chargers kick off the season with the New Haven Invitational, a four team, two-day tournament, at Chargers Gymnasium beginning Friday, September, 3rd. The following weekend, UNH will travel to Bentley University for an Invitational in Waltham, Mass. After two additional non-conference matches, the Chargers will put their conference unbeaten streak on the line when they open the conference season against Pace University on September 23rd. Outside of the conference schedule, other big matches throughout the season will be against tough non-conference opponents University of Bridgeport twice in the first two-weeks of the season as well as Dowling College on October 13th and New York Institute of Technology later in the season on October 29th. The NE-10 Conference tournament begins on Tuesday, November 9th with the quarterfinals. This year the semifinals and finals will be held at the top seed on November 12th and 13th.
2010 PLAYERS
Defense A team’s defense often starts at the net with the middle blockers and leading the Chargers in the middle this season will be junior Elizabeth Akinbiyi and sophomore Tymika Duncan. Akinbiyi started in all 31 matches and was New Haven’s leading blocker with 120 blocks last season. Akinbiyi finished fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference with 1.05 blocks per set and tallied double-digit kills in nine matches. Duncan played in 26 matches, accumulated 110 kills and 55 total blocks for the Chargers in 2009. The tandem will look for assistance from freshman Cannady as well, a 6-foot-4 utility player who specializes in the middle. In the backcourt, the Chargers’ defense will be led by third-year player Heather Ladao. Ladao earned and excelled at the starting libero position a year ago. She played in 29 matches, a total of 108 sets and led the team with 506 digs (4.36 digs per set). Furthermore, Ladao posted a .914
reception percentage and registered 42 aces for the Chargers. Joining Ladao in the back row will be defensive specialists senior Steffi Faure and freshman Ali Krikau. Faure enters her final season with the Chargers, participating in 18 sets in 2009. Krikau comes to New Haven from Falcons of Fairfield Ludlowe High School where she recorded over 1,000 digs in three years and was selected to the All-State team as a senior.

the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals when she tallied a season-high eight kills. In addition to Benson, freshman Amber Cannady and fellow classmate Phyllisse Lewis will compete for playing time. Lewis comes to New Haven from Bridgeport Central High School where she endured three sports for the Hilltoppers. On the volleyball court, Lewis earned All-Conference honors in her final season with the program. Cannady comes to UNH as a two-time All-League selection and All-Section I honoree from Charles E. The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 30th year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II. The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.
The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.
The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. 2009 NE-10 WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL HIGHLIGHTS • Bentley’s Head Coach Sandy Hoffman became the fourth active Division II coach to reach the 700-win milestone, and the 24th in NCAA women’s volleyball history to do so. Alex Kearney earned fi rst team All-Northeast-10 honors for the fourth consecutive year and became the team’s all-time leader in kills, finishing with 1,455. As a team, the Falcons reached the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, and 11th overall. • Merrimack won a school-record 21 matches, setting the program’s mark for the third straight season. Alyssa Pickert became the program’s all-time leader in digs, while Elyse Lorenz set the mark for assists in a career. Head Coach Joey Pacis became the all-time wins leader at Merrimack when he won his 100th match on Oct. 10. • New Haven advanced to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this year. • Saint Rose senior Mary German became the only player in school annals to amass 2,000 digs (2,154).
• UMass Lowell won its first-ever Northeast-10 Volleyball Championship with a 3-2 victory over Adelphi in this year’s championship match. • New Haven repeated as NE-10 Regular Season Champions after another perfect season in conference play (15-0). In their short two years as a member of the NE-10, the Chargers are 29-0 in conference play. • The Northeast-10 was represented by five teams including Adelphi, Bentley, UMass Lowell, New Haven and Pace in this year’s NCAA Tournament. This marked the most NE-10 schools competing in NCAA’s since 2005, when four teams received postseason berths. • The Northeast-10 had seven student-athletes named to the AVCA Division II AllRegion team. This year’s list included three players from Adelphi (Heather Mau, Hilary Pavels and Amy Williams) along with UMass Lowell’s Sarah Coscia and three players from New Haven (Chelsey Alpough, Keidy Candelaria and Sara Malmlov).
• Southern Connecticut qualified for the NE-10 Championship for the first time in school history. The Owls eliminated top seed New Haven in the quarterfinals. This marked the first time under the recent championship format (est. 2000) that a #8 seed defeated a #1 seed.

EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE The University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament an astounding 23 times in 27 seasons. That string includes 18 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and 11 berths to the Elite Eight. Overall in 32 seasons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,005-310 - a winning percentage of .764. Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The resume of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4. Deborah Chin, who is currently the Director of Athletics at UNH, is the program’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the first 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December, 2006. She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top five all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top five four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her final 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-yearold institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45 countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences. Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities. As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at

2009 REVIEW
Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting

the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.
at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.
