2011-12 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2011-12 University of New Haven men’s basketball team looks to improve on a rebuilding season from a year ago as they return nine players from last year’s 12-man roster. The Chargers are coming off their third year in the Northeast-10 Conference and first under head coach Ted Hotaling. As last season progressed, so did New Haven, winning five of its last 10 games. After a year of adjusting to a new system, the Chargers look poised to build off that momentum from last campaign and hope to have an improved year in the NE-10 this season.

Petersburg College in Florida. The 6-foot-7 forward from London, England will be asked to fill the void left by the team’s top rebounder last campaign.

Hotaling and his staff will face the task of coaching another young squad this season that features three freshman, six sophomores and four juniors. Despite a lack of senior leadership, this team has plenty of experience as four returners played all 26 games last year. Hotaling added another new coach to the staff as well with the addition of Michael Shelton. Prior to his arrival at UNH, Shelton served as an assistant coach for two seasons at Wesleyan University.

Anderson will provide all-around depth for New Haven, seeing time as both a guard and forward. The Newark, N.J. native stands tall at 6-foot-8 and was an All-Conference, All-County and All-State selection as a senior at Newark Tech High School. He was also a North vs. South Senior Team All-Star selection.

The Chargers three captains will provide leadership this upcoming season: Jeremy Williams, Jeffery Adkins, Jr. and Justin Exum. Williams played in all 26 games last year and was third in the NE-10 with 36.08 minutes per game. The 6-foot guard from Silver Spring, Md. finished second on the team in assists (2.0 apg.) and third in scoring (9.4 ppg.), rebounding (3.7 rpg.) and steals (1.1 spg.). New Haven graduated its top scorer and rebounder from last season and will lean on sophomore Exum to anchor the offensive attack this season. The 6-foot-3 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y. finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding a year ago, averaging 14.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. A Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team selection, Exum is a serious threat from downtown. He ranked first among all freshmen in all of NCAA Division II and 17th overall in three-point field goals made per game last year. The sophomore sensation also finished third all-time in program history with 80 three-point field goals made in one season. However, Exum is more than just a scorer; he is an allaround threat and will look to anchor the defensive side of the ball as well. In 2010-11, he led the team in blocked shots with 15 and tied for the team lead with 1.3 steals per game. Adkins will also have an increased role in the team’s offense this season. Last year, the speedy 5-foot-10 guard out of Piscataway, N.J. led the squad in assists with 2.6 per game and tied for the lead in steals with 1.3 per game. He was efficient shooting the ball as well, finishing second on the team with a 51.8 field goal percentage. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 25.5 minutes per game. Juniors Sean Harris and Mark Palmieri return for their third years as well. Harris, of Mount Vernon, N.Y. averaged 5.7 points, 1.8 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game last season. He appeared in all 26 games, while making eight starts. Palmieri made eight appearances last season for a total of 12 minutes. Adding to the Chargers’ large sophomore class are Alan D’Auria, Ashanti DePass, Krystian Foriest and Kevin McLaughlin. DePass played in 22 games last season as a freshman and averaged 2.0 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. Foriest missed several games a year ago due to injury, but made the most of his opportunity when healthy. The 6-foot-5 forward shot 42.4% from behind-the-arc, while averaging 6.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in 15 appearances. D’Auria and McLaughlin have adjusted to the new system during the offseason and will also be key contributors this season.

Three student-athletes will be playing in their first collegiate basketball season this winter. Freshmen Eric Anderson, Cyrus James and Samir McDaniels provide size that head coach Hotaling was searching for and all are expected to make an immediate impact for the Chargers.

James adds size to the Chargers front court with his 6-foot-7, 215 pound frame. The freshman from Manchester, Conn. was an All-Constitution State Conference First Team selection a year ago and was a 1,000 point scorer throughout the course of his career. McDaniels, a 6-foot-4 guard/forward from Roxbury, Mass. was the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at New Mission High School. A four-year varsity player, he scored over 1,000 career points and was a two-time Boston City League All-Star. McDaniels helped lead his team to back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011 and will be looked at to bring that type of success to New Haven. The Chargers were selected 16th in the NE-10 preseason coaches’ poll but with a new system in place, the squad looks to improve on that position in their fourth NE-10 season. The team fulfilled their offseason needs by acquiring size in the front court and now have four players that stand 6-foot-7 or taller. The Chargers will rely on quickness and size this winter as they hope to compete with the top teams in the conference. The Schedule The Chargers kickoff the 2011-12 regular season on Sunday, November 13 when they travel to Dowling College for a non-conference affair. Three days later, UNH begins its quest for the Northeast-10 Conference title with its home opener against the College of Saint Rose at Charger Gymnasium. New Haven returns home the following week and will host the reigning NE-10 Champions, Adelphi University. On Saturday, December 12, the Chargers head across town to visit Southern Connecticut before ending the 2011 year with back-to-back non-conference games against Nyack and Molloy. They begin the New Year with a road contest at Stonehill on January 3 and will host Merrimack on Saturday, January 7 for the team’s first home contest of 2012. Another big mark on the team’s schedule is Saturday, February 18 as the team gets its second look at cross-town rival Southern Connecticut. In February, the game will be held at Charger Gymnasium. The following game concludes regular season action when New Haven travels to the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday, February 21. The 2011-12 NE-10 Champion will be crowned on Saturday, March 3 in the conference championship game.

The Chargers will welcome four newcomers in 2011-12. Junior Ade Barek brings size to the New Haven front court that the team lacked a season ago. Barek joins the squad after spending two years at St.

The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-yearold institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45 countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences. Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities. As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at

fiction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twenty-five countries in twenty-five years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting
