RESIDENTIAL LIFE Making you feel at home is a priority at UNH. Our on-campus housing is available in eight residence halls. Residential Life staff members live in each hall and help promote an atmosphere conducive to study and social interaction among students. Residence Hall Councils, composed of students elected by their peers, plan social and recreational activities and serve as representatives for students living in each hall. Room accommodations range from traditional residence halls (equipped with a fitness room and campus convenience store) to multi-bedroom, apartment-style residences.

The David A. Beckerman Recreation Center was made possible by a generous donation from alumnus David A. Beckerman. The Center includes basketball courts; a multi-sport court for rollerblading, roller hockey, volleyball and indoor soccer; a fitness center with aerobic equipment, weights and televisions; a multi-purpose room for yoga, step aerobics, Pilates and other activities; an elevated running track; and a lounge area for relaxation.

HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON CAREER OVERALL: 185-138 RECORD AT UNH: 0-0 ALMA MATER: SUNY NEW PALTZ, 1999

Chris Celano was named the third baseball coach in University of New Haven history on July 22, 2011 by Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics Deborah Chin.

During his seven seasons as head coach, the Golden Lions recorded 20-or-more wins six times. In 2006, Celano led Dowling to 22 victories in its final 25 games to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Celano also coached three student-athletes that were selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft, three All-Americans and 31 All-Conference honorees during his tenure at Dowling.

Prior to his stint as head coach, Celano served three seasons as an assistant coach at Dowling from 2001-03. The Setauket, N.Y. native also served as the college’s Director of Sports Information from 2003-04. A 1994 graduate of Ward Melville High School, Celano received his Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from SUNY New Paltz in 1999. After a successful college career as a lefthanded pitcher, he went on to play professionally in Rimini, Italy where he was a member of the 1999 Italian League Champion Rimini Pirates. Upon returning, Chris signed with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the Northern League and spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons in the states.

COACHING STAFF

Prior to UNH, Celano completed seven years as head coach at Dowling College where he led the Golden Lions to six postseason appearances, including four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. The skipper guided Dowling to its first NCAA Division II World Series and was named the Division II National Coach of the Year in 2009. That season also marked the Golden Lions first NCAA East Region Championship, while the team set a single season program record for wins with 35. Also the ABCA East Region Coach of the Year in 2009, Celano earned his first Coach of the Year honor in 2008 from the East Coast Conference.

At the time of Celano’s hiring, legendary former coach Frank “Porky” Vieira knew the Chargers had found the right person to take over the program. “It was impossible to find a better match as the next head coach. By hiring Chris, the program is pointed in the direction of the World Series,” Vieira said.

ALEX TREZZA FIRST SEASON ASSISTANT COACH ALMA MATER: STONY BROOK, 2001 Rockies and participated in spring training. He also spent time with the Worcester Tornadoes and the North Shore Spirit of the Canam League, where he led the league in home runs He brings with him 11 years of with 19 during the 2006 season. professional baseball experience and five years of coaching experience. Prior to joining New Haven, Trezza Trezza, a Division I All-America honoree spent the previous season as a hitting in 2001, was a three-year member of coach for Adelphi University in which Stony Brook’s baseball team. Among he helped guide the Panthers to a many accolades, he was named NCAA Division II East Regional round Freshman of The Year and New York appearance. Adelphi finished the State Baseball Conference Player 2011 season with a 36-14-2 overall of the Year. He holds several school record and 19-6-1 Northeast-10 mark, records at Stony Brook, including single second best in conference. They were season home runs (23), career home statistically one of the strongest hitting runs (55) and RBI (176). Following his teams in the NE-10. He also served college career, Trezza was drafted in as an assistant coach at Anna Maria the 18th round by the Detroit Tigers College, helping guide the program to in 2001. He played four years in the a record 21 wins and to postseason Detroit organization and received berths in both the TCCC Conference the Most Improved Player Award in and the ECAC Championships. 2003. TIM COMISKEY FIRST SEASON ASSISTANT COACH ALMA MATER: DOWLING, 2010 Tim Comiskey enters his first season with the University of New Haven baseball team in 2012. With prior coaching experience, the Great River, N.Y. native will assist with the pitcher at New Haven.

Comiskey went on to become an assistant in 2011 for Celano and the Lions. He spent the summer of 2011 with the Long Island Ducks Youth Baseball Program where he served as coach and manager for the U-16 baseball team. He also has prior coaching experience as a coach at the ALLPRO Sports Academy in Bellport, N.Y. where heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a summer camp coach for four years.

A 2010 graduate of Dowling College, Comiskey played at two Division I programs before transferring to Dowling. He played one year at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and spent two years at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 31st year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II. The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.

The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.

The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. Located at the North Campus Athletic Complex, overlooking the city of New Haven, Vieira Field provides plenty of seating for fans along first base, as well as team dugouts, bullpens, and press box facilities behind home plate. The field is located between Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium and the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s softball field. The residential neighborhood venue provides a comfortable setting for families to enjoy the highly successful UNH program, and the field is a convenient walking distance to the main campus.

Vieira Stadium Renovation Plan The University of New Haven is embarking on a major field renovation campaign. Vieira Field already had its entire infield playing surface replaced prior to the 2008 season. With help from alumni and friends of the program, we hope to continue renovations at Vieira Field (baseball). A top-notch facility will help us recruit strong student-athletes, showcase our past successes and achieve new ones. Included in the renovations: Sunken concrete dugouts with double-tier benches, 200 stadium seats behind the backstop, additional spectator seating, padded wall bearing the Charger logo behind home plate. A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHARGER BASEBALL: 49 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE ... AND COUNTING Compiling a complete history of University of New Haven Baseball would take far more than one page, and the countless stories could go on and on, so we’ll call this a “Brief History” of Charger Baseball.

The University of New Haven has one of the most storied baseball programs in the history of NCAA Division II. Ask any fan of UNH Baseball, or really any fan of a team in the Northeast, and they’ll tell you that a discussion of Charger Baseball begins and ends with one man - legendary former head coach Frank “Porky” Vieira. The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) and the East Coast Conference (ECC). Vieira is the true “father” of the UNH Baseball program, and until the 2007 season, the only Over the program’s first 45 seasons, UNH coach the school had ever known. He founded Baseball has made 31 Regional Tournament the program in 1963. Under Vieira, who retired appearances (26 NCAA, 5 NAIA) and earned 17 following the 2006 season, the UNH baseball College World Series berths (15 NCAA, 2 NAIA). program posted an all-time record of 1,127-324- UNH has 81 postseason wins in all, the third6 in 44 seasons. That included a string of 42 most of any school in NCAA Division II history, straight winning seasons from 1963 to 2004, and advanced to the College World Series a and 43 winning seasons overall. school-record seven consecutive times from 1984 to 1990. The team’s best finishes came No matter how you break down the numbers, as NCAA Runners-Up in 1980 and 1989, when Vieira is one of the all-time greatest in the college game.

UNH fell to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which later had its participation vacated due to ineligible players. Coach Vieira is the first one to tell you that a great coach can’t do anything without great players - and UNH has certainly had its share. UNH has produced over 80 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 10 players who made it to Major League Baseball. Notably, UNH is one of only 14 schools to have produced a player that would later go on to win the Major League Baseball Cy Young Award. Former Charger great Steve Bedrosian went on to earn the NL Cy Young award while a member of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1987, saving 40 of the team’s 80 wins that season. Cameron Drew was the program’s first-ever First Round Draft Pick with his selection in 1985. Dave Wallace has been a respected professional coach since 1981, and won a World Series as pitching coach with the Boston Red Sox in 2004. This list goes on and on. (For a more complete list of players in the pros, see the “Chargers in the Pros” page in the back of this guide) Even some of those players who didn’t go on to play professionally had standout careers on the diamond for UNH. Further evidence of the Chargers’ contributions to the sport can be found in the NCAA Record Book, where you’ll see the words “New Haven” 34 times among the various team and individual records.

At the start of the 2012 season, he was second among all-time Division II coaches with a career winning percentage of .776, and fourth among D-II coaches in total victories. “Coach V” also ranks eighth on the all-time, all-division coaching records list in terms of winning percentage and 34th in total wins. He is one of only 35 coaches to ever win at least 1,100 games at any division of college baseball. Vieira’s achievements have not gone unrecognized by the media or his peers. Featured in several publications including Sports Illustrated, he received the “Gold Key” from the Connecticut Sports Writers Association and was named Coach of the Year numerous Over 250 people, including 45 former players and coaches, turned out on December 8, 2006 to times for the NCAA Northeast Region as well as help send Coach Vieira off into retirement with a “Toast & Roast” Celebration.

Did You Know? UNH is one of only 14 colleges to have produced a Cy Young winner in the 50-year history of the award. Steve Bedrosian picked up the NL Cy Young Award in 1987 after saving 40 of the Phillies’ 80 victories. “Bedrock” went on to win a World Series ring with the Minnesota Twins in 1991.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President S teve n H . Ka p l a n , P h . D . , became the sixth president of the University of New Haven (UNH) on July 1, 2004. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-yearold institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45 countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences. Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities. As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Virginia, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo, an institution with about 11,000 students; and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, an independent comprehensive institution of five colleges and 3,400 students, which is ranked by U. S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the Midwest. He completed his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Germany and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English), also from Eberhard-Karls Universitat. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twentyfive countries in twenty-five years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. He was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (associate producer of the film), and is the President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the foundation. His wife grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery during their time in Wise.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the school’s four th director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH,

coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of science in physical education, Chin earned her Master’s of science degree in physical education from UNCGreensboro.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 seventeen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies. • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987. • The football program appeared in four NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger history. Shannon Gagne won five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 National Championship meet. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
