JEN STAREK
HEAD COACH SIXTH SEASON AT UNH 2010 NE-10 COACH OF THE YEAR RECORD AT UNH: 160-85 (.653) ALMA MATER: SPRINGFIELD, 2001
Jen Starek enters her sixth season as head coach of the Chargers’ softball program in 2012. She took over as UNH’s head coach in the summer of 2006 and led the Chargers to a 26-19 record in her first season and a school record 42 wins in 2010 as the team finished with a 42-8 mark. The Chargers set numerous records in 2011, but one of Starek’s biggest victories to date came on Monday, April 25, 2011. In a 13-3 five-inning victory over Saint Michael’s College, the head coach won her 200th career game, in just her eighth overall season. Starek would lead the Chargers to a record fourth-straight NCAA tournament, while two All-American selections followed Chelsea Harold and Christina Gelardi. Both also earned All-Conference honors along with Micah Stonesifer and Brooke Fisher who was selected to the All-Rookie Team. The Chargers recorded a 34-19 overall record and a 20-10 conference mark to earn the fourth seed in the conference championship tournament. The 2011 season also marked the first time ever the UNH softball team posted three-straight 30-win seasons. The 2010 campaign was yet another successful season under Starek as she led the Chargers to their first Northeast-10 Regular Season title en route to NE-10 Coach of the Year honors. New Haven fell to Adelphi and American International in the Northeast-10 Championships but swept the NCAA Division II East Region Championships as the No. 1 seed by defeating Georgian Court, 8-0, and taking cross-town rival Southern Connecticut in two games, 5-3 and 4-2. New Haven entered the NCAA Super Regionals as the No. 1 seed as well and took the first of three games against Molloy, 6-5, but dropped the doubleheader to become eliminated

from NCAA tournament action and ending the Chargers longest postseason run in program history. They finished the season ranked #16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll. For the second consecutive season, senior Breanne Gleason received All-America accolades, earning a Third Team selection. Classmate Nicole Downs also received Third Team All-America honors and both were named to the NE-10 First Team alongside teammate Chelsea Harold. Also joining the trio on the All-Conference team was freshman Christine Gelardi, earning a spot on the All-Rookie team. Gleason was named the NE-10 and East Region Pitcher and Player of the Year as well and became just the second player in NE10 Conference history to earn both awards in a single season. Gleason and Downs’ slew of postseason awards also included a Daktronics Division II All-America Second Team and Honorable Mention respectively. Prior to a stellar 2010 season, Starek guided the Chargers into the semifinals of the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference, falling to cross-town rival Southern Connecticut, and the finals of the NCAA Div. II East Region Championship. UNH fell to Georgian Court in a close, 5-3, battle to end the season. In addition to a successful season, Starek picked up her 100th career win following the second game of 2009. The Chargers gave Starek her 100th in a 1-0 win over Wayne State on their spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. on March 16. After hovering around .500 for the first half of 2008, Starek’s Chargers found their groove late in the season and made an

improbable run in the NCAA tournament. UNH dropped its opening round game in the tournament to #9 C.W. Post but bounced back to win four straight games to set up a rematch with C.W. Post. New Haven fell again to the first-ranked team in the region but gained valuable experience during their run. Prior to her arrival at UNH, Starek spent the previous two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games, to improve upon a 17-22 mark from 2005. She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16 & under team during 2005 and 2006. Previously, Starek has been head softball coach, assistant athletic director and adjunct professor of sports management at Mount Ida College (2003-04). She was an assistant softball coach at her alma mater Springfield College from 2001-03, and in 2003 the team went 33-12 overall, their second-highest win total in the last 17 years. Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration there in 2003. Starek was a standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield. As a catcher/outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference selection (2000, 2001), NFCA All-New England Second Team (2001), and NEISCA Division III second team All-Star (1999). The Pride won their first-ever NEWMAC Tournament in 2000, advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 30-17-1 record. The following season as a senior, Starek led Springfield to a 41-10 record, their highest win total in at least 17 years. Starek led the Pride field hockey team to NEWMAC titles 1998, 1999 and 2000. They advanced to the national championship game in 2000, her final season. She is a NATA-certified athletic trainer and a NSCA certified strength & conditioning coach. Starek is a native of Holliston, Mass., and currently resides in Fairfield, Conn.

The Northeast-10 Conference enters its 31st year as there is little surprise why the Northeast-10 Conference has continued to grow stronger year by year since it’s inception and now stands as a model conference of NCAA Division II. The conference was built from the ground up with strong cornerstones and a vision of becoming the premier Division II NCAA athletic conference in the nation. A quick look around the league today will tell even the casual observer that the NE-10 has done so. The conference is a powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities that incorporates 16 institutions from New York and New England. The NE-10 sponsors the most championship sports of any Division II conference in the nation.
The founding fathers of the NE-10 were only happy to comply. Thus, a handful of athletic directors at smaller schools, classified Division II and of similar scope, academic makeup and athletic abilities hatched the idea of a new athletics conference in New England. Therefore, on October 9, 1979, a simple press release announced that a new unnamed Division II conference was being formed. Eight months later, at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Springfield, Mass., the league was publicly announced.
The Northeast-7 Conference established instant credibility in its membership and that credibility led to a slow but continued expansion through the years. The admittance of Saint Anselm in 1981 created the Northeast-8. In 1984, Hartford joined the ECAC Division I North Atlantic Conference but The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of was immediately replaced by Merrimack. successes – the growth from seven original schools to more than double its size 20 years The “Northeast-10” name came about when later – the contention for and winning of national Saint Michael’s and Quinnipiac joined the league championships – the change in league structure in 1987 and the conference remained stable from on-campus administration to a central until 1995 when Springfield left for Division governing location – the anticipation of, coping III. Dr. Kaplan joined a nearly 85-yearold institution dedicated to experiential education. With enrollment of over 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students representing more than 35 states and some 45 countries, UNH has several nationally ranked programs in a number of majors in business, engineering, public safety, and the liberal arts and sciences. Dr. Kaplan was presented to the community in March 2004 by then Board of Governors Chairman Robert Alvine, who characterized the president-designate as energetic, well-liked and respected, focused and remarkably effective in mobilizing an institution’s resources to achieve target results. His highest priorities are strengthening the University’s endowment, growing enrollment to optimum levels, and engendering an atmosphere for excellence among all constituencies. He has focused on establishing strong relationships with members and organizations within UNH’s circle of constituents – faculty, students, administrators, alumni, friends, campus neighbors and leaders of Connecticut’s business and public service communities. As president, he oversees a faculty of nearly 400, 530 staff, and an annual budget of $84 million.
Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Virginia, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report. Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universitat, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo, an institution with about 11,000 students; and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University, an independent comprehensive institution of five colleges and 3,400 students, which is ranked by U. S. News & World Report as one of the top regional universities in the Midwest. He completed his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität in Germany and holds the Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German, and English), also from Eberhard-Karls Universitat. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, a number of scholarly essays, a book on Tim O’Brien’s fiction with the University of South Carolina Press, and an anthology of international war stories with the University Press of Colorado. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike, and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to over twentyfive countries in twenty-five years, including Tanzania where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. He was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (associate producer of the film), and is the President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the foundation. His wife grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery during their time in Wise.
Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the school’s four th director of athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 17 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament play 50 times in 14-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and yellow synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. The Charger football team will return to the gridiron for the 2009 season. A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH,

Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 seventeen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger history. Shannon Gagne won five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 National Championship meet. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
