He was also New Haven’s thirdleading scorer at 12.9 points per game while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 75.2 percent from the freethrow line. Adkins, who rounded out his statline with 3.4 rebounds per outing, was a Third Team All-Northeast-10 selection in 2012-13.

last season. A Second Team All-NE-10 and NABC All-District honoree, Exum ranked among the nation’s leaders, draining 43.2 percent of his attempts from distance in 2012-13 while knocking down 82 triples – the third-highest singleseason total in program history. He also shot 83.8 percent from the charity stripe as New Haven’s aggregate 74.3 percent mark from the free-throw line slotted at 38th in all of Division II. The 32nd 1,000-point scorer at New Haven, Exum added 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game for the Chargers last winter.

2012-13 REVIEW

Coming off of its first 20-win season and NCAA postseason appearance since 2004, the New Haven men’s basketball team returns eight student-athletes, including four starters, to the court in 2013-14 poised for a return to the national stage. This winter will be the fourth on the sidelines for Head Coach Ted Hotaling.

15 points per game as a senior. Most recently, he netted 14.8 points per contest in a post-graduate year at Putnam Science Academy. Freshmen Lylle Ryals, an all-league performer at Walter Panas High School, and New Rochelle High School product Donny Powell will provide additional depth on the perimeter.

FRONTCOURT The anchor of the Chargers’ frontcourt is junior Eric Anderson – the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Also a Second Team All-NE-10 pick, Anderson ranked third in Division II with 12.0 rebounds per game and slotted ninth in the country with 2.5 blocked shots per contest – leading the NE-10 in both categories. He manned the paint for a New Haven defense that ranked 13th in the nation with a conference-best 61.1 points per game allowed. One of four Chargers to average double figures with 12.6 points per game, Anderson’s 18 double-doubles last winter were just one short of the national leader. Anderson sank nearly half of his shots from the floor (49.2 percent) and stretched opposing defenses by knocking down 34.1 percent of his three-point attempts. Cyrus James will also return to the frontcourt for his junior year in 2013-14. James averaged 5.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in his first season as a member of Hotaling’s starting five. He was the Chargers’ most-efficient scorer at 61.3 percent from the field and also converted at a 70.4 percent clip from the line. A versatile scorer who can stretch defenses from the post and the perimeter, Joshua Guddemi will see an increased role in 2013-14. He posted 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while coming off the bench in all 29 contests for an average of 13.4 minutes per outing.

the frontcourt after appearing in three games of an injuryplagued campaign in 2012-13. A newcomer expected to make an immediate impact is Queens, N.Y. native Jonny Ocasio. A junior transfer from Hillsborough Community College in Plant City, Fla., Ocasio averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game in his last season of action en route to Second Team All-Suncoast Conference honors. The 6-7 swingman can score at the rim and from the perimeter. COACHING STAFF The theme of continuity runs from the court to the sidelines. Coach Hotaling welcomes Assistant Coach Tobe Carberry back to the bench for his fourth season and Assistant Coach Matt Holt returns for his second campaign. Additionally, Mark Palmieri will join the staff as an assistant coach after a four-year career at New Haven that culminated with a spot as co-captain of the Chargers last season. SCHEDULE A difficult schedule is a given in the Northeast-10 Conference, as the Chargers will play six games against teams that joined them at the NCAA Division II East Region Championship last March. In addition to the regularly-scheduled conference outings with region champion Franklin Pierce, reigning NE-10 champion Southern New Hampshire, regular season conference champion Saint Anselm and Assumption, New Haven has added a meeting with CACC frontrunner Bloomfield and an additional non-conference clash with the Penmen. In total, the slate features 12 contests played at Charger Gymnasium, all of which are set to be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.

The one true center on the New Haven roster is Kevin McLaughlin. The 6-10 Charger big man has seen an increase in playing time throughout his first three seasons, taking the court in 10 contests last winter and netting the first four points of his collegiate career in addition to five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. McLaughlin completed his undergraduate coursework in May of 2013 and has remained at the University as a graduate student pursuing his M.S. in Criminal Justice. After missing the entirety of last season due to injury, Samir McDaniels will be back in the mix for Coach Hotaling this year. McDaniels appeared in 17 games as a freshman in 2011-12, averaging 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Krystian Foriest will add additional depth in

They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. HISTORY & RECORDS

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

2012-13 REVIEW

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

2013-14 PLAYERS

We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 nineteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
