Another flexible assist in the backcourt is 2011-12 Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, Bria Moore. Now a junior, Moore ranked third on the team last winter with 10.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as one of three Chargers to start all 27 contests. Also a threat from long-range with 28 made triples in 2012-13, Moore scored a careerhigh 27 points sparked by five treys in the Dec. 8 home win over crosstown and conference rival Southern Connecticut State.

BACKCOURT Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team honoree Briana Bradford will once again run the point in her sophomore campaign. Bradford ranked second on the team last winter with 12.7 points per game, adding 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest. She has already established herself as a clutch
Aquillin Hayes returns to her position out on the wing after averaging a double-double in 2012-13 with 10.3 points and a team-leading 10.4 rebounds per game, including more than four rips per contest from the offensive glass. Hayes ranked third in the conference on the boards last season and slotted at fourth in the NE-10 with 1.7 blocks per game. The junior will be a versatile weapon on the perimeter with both a solid mid-range game as well as the ability to get to the rim.

2012-13 REVIEW
Coming off of one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation last season, the University of New Haven women’s basketball team looks to continue the trend and compete for a Northeast-10 Championship in the 2013-14 campaign. The Chargers’ roster boasts 12 returners, including four student-athletes who started 17 or more games last winter, in the first season under Head Coach Ty Grace.

2013-14 PREVIEW Significant time on the wing will also go to Lauren Hebert, who appeared in all 27 games with four starts in her rookie campaign. Hebert averaged 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and knocked down 22 three-pointers last winter. Elizabeth Cruso, another true point guard, took the court in 17 contests in 2012-13. She totaled 26 points and 11 assists in 7.7 minutes per game and is expected to see an increased role running the Chargers’ offense in her junior season. After missing the entirety of 2012-13 due to injury, Audrey Cunningham re-enters the mix in the New Haven backcourt this season. She played all 26 games of the 2011-12 campaign, including eight starts, averaging 4.8 points and 2.2 rebounds while draining 28 three-pointers. The Chargers will get additional depth around the perimeter from returner LaTanza Britts as well as the squad’s lone newcomer, Jasmine Gibson. FRONTCOURT Poised for another strong season in the post is junior Ashley LeBlanc. The 6-2 center averaged 7.1 points and ranked second on the team with 5.6 rebounds per game last season. She poured in a career-best 25 points at Saint Rose during her freshman campaign and, last winter, hauled in a career-high 16 rebounds at perennial NE-10 power Franklin Pierce.
COACHING STAFF Joining Grace on the sidelines will be assistant coaches April Phillips and Nikita Reddy. Phillips most recently worked alongside Grace as Coordinator of Basketball Operations at Seton Hall. As a student-athlete, she appeared in three NCAA Tournaments at Xavier University and won a pair of Atlantic 10 Championships. Reddy was a tri-captain for the Chargers last season and appeared in 61 career games for the Blue and Gold. Also a Dean’s List student, she graduated from the University in May of 2013 and is currently pursuing an MBA at New Haven. SCHEDULE The Chargers’ 26-game slate is highlighted by a trip to the Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament and 12 games played within the confines of Charger Gymnasium. The Northeast-10 calendar includes preseason No. 1 Bentley and nationally-ranked Stonehill, as well as Assumption and Franklin Pierce – both of whom joined the Falcons and Skyhawks at the 2012-13 NCAA Div. II East Region Championship. Outside of the conference, New Haven will meet reigning NCAA National Finalist Dowling and could challenge perennial South Region contender Rollins at the Tars’ home tournament in late November.
Rykema Stone also appeared in every game for New Haven in 2012-13, including 17 starts. She netted 3.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest, hauling in 11 boards on Feb. 6 as the Chargers competed a home-and-home season sweep of division foe Adelphi. Graduate student Ayana Duncanson scored 2.5 points per game and snagged 3.7 rebounds last winter, appearing in 20 games for New Haven. With 55 career contests played for the Blue and Gold, she brings additional experience to the post in her final season with the Chargers. Returning to the mix after missing all of 2012-13 due to injury is Ana Obella. Obella has played 34 games in two seasons of competition with the Chargers, totaling 29 points and 33 rebounds in an average of 10.9 minutes per appearance. New Haven will look for additional depth down low from Amber Martinez. Martinez has appeared in five career contests.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. HISTORY & RECORDS
UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.
NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 nineteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
