JEN STAREK HEAD COACH SEVENTH SEASON SPRINGFIELD ‘01

Last spring, Starek produced the Chargers’ sixth straight winning season – a stretch that began when she took over the program in 2007. The team finished 29-19 and earned the No. 7 seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, going on to knock off No. 2 Adelphi and advance to the championship’s “Final Four”. Starek mentored Shannon Angehr to First Team All-NE-10 and Second Team NFCA All-East Region laurels as an outfielder. In 2011, New Haven advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship as the No. 4 seed and was one of three teams left standing on the tournament’s final day of action. The Chargers also claimed the No. 7 seed in the NCAA East Region Championship, marking the club’s fourth-straight NCAA postseason trip. After concluding the season with a 34-19 overall record, Chelsea Harold and Christina Gelardi both earned NFCA All-America honors and were two of the four Chargers to claim All-Northeast-10 recognition.

The 2010 campaign was a landmark season for the Chargers. Starek claimed Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honors after guiding New Haven to its first NE-10 Regular Season Championship. Despite being upset at the NE-10 Championship, the Chargers’ regular season résumé merited the top seed in the NCAA Division II East Region Championship. New Haven swept the competition at the regional before dropping the Super Regional to Molloy in the deciding game of a best-of-three series. The Chargers won a program-record 42 games and made the longest NCAA postseason run in program history, finishing the spring ranked No. 16 in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll. 2010 also marked the end of arguably the best four-year career in New Haven softball history. Breanne Gleason was a three-time All-America honoree and only the second player in Northeast-10 history to earn Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season (2010). She was also the 20th NCAA Division II pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts and the 22nd to register 100 wins. Gleason was a four-time All-Region selection, a two-time First Team All-NE-10 honoree and recorded the most recent perfect game in New Haven history – a 3-0 win over Dowling on March 17, 2010.

four consecutive elimination games. Starek took over the Chargers’ program in 2007 and led the team to a 26-19 record – an eight-win improvement from the previous campaign. Prior to her arrival at New Haven, Starek spent two years as head softball and field hockey coach at Simmons College in Boston. The Sharks’ 2006 softball team won the Colleges of the Fenway Tournament and scored an opening-round win in the Great Northeast Atlantic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs. The team posted a 19-19 record overall, including wins in seven of the team’s last nine games, to improve upon a 17-22 mark from 2005. She was also the co-head coach of Pressure Softball’s 16U Team during 2005 and 2006. Previously, Starek has been head softball coach, assistant athletic director and an adjunct professor of sports management at Mount Ida College (2003-04). She was an assistant softball coach at her alma mater, Springfield College, from 2001-03. In 2003, the Pride went 33-12 overall to register its second-highest win total in a 17year span. Starek graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Springfield College in 2001, and earned an MS in athletic administration in 2003. Starek was a standout softball and field hockey player at Springfield. As a catcher and outfielder in softball, she was twice a NEWMAC First Team All-Conference selection (2000, 2001), NFCA All-New England Second Team (2001), and NEISCA Division III second team All-Star (1999). The Pride won their first-ever NEWMAC Tournament in 2000, advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 30-17-1 record. The following season as a senior, Starek led Springfield to a 41-10 record, their highest win total in at least 17 years. Starek led the Pride field hockey team to NEWMAC titles 1998, 1999 and 2000. They advanced to the national championship game in 2000, her final season. She is an NATA certified athletic trainer and an NSCA certified strength and conditioning coach. New Haven’s all-time wins leader on the softball diamond at 193106 (also her Division II head coaching record), Starek is 236-168 (.584) overall in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach.

HISTORY & RECORDS

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 eighteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight 11 times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2008. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 32 Regional appearances. Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies. • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987. • The football program has appeared in five NCAA playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. That title-game appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger history. Shannon Gagne won five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 National Championship meet. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation.
