FOURTH SEASON CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE ’05 Laura Duncan has posted winning seasons in each of her first three campaigns at New Haven. She completed the 2012 season with a career record of 29-23-3.

women’s soccer team. Duncan was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, recruiting and game-day and practice coordination. While at Fairfield, the Stags were twice crowned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions (2005 & 2008) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Duncan also mentored two MAAC This past fall, Duncan led New Haven’s most successful campaign since Players of the Year for the Stags. joining the Northeast-10 Conference. The Chargers finished 11-7-1 – the program’s highest win total since 2007. Five total all-conference selections represent the most by New Haven since joining the Northeast-10 in 2008 and the most overall since five Chargers garnered All-East Coast Conference laurels in 2006. 2012 REVIEW HISTORY & RECORDS

The fifth head coach in 20 seasons of New Haven women’s soccer, Duncan is the first head coach to boast a winning record in multiple seasons to begin his or her tenure at UNH. Duncan’s 2011 Chargers defeated three teams that advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament en route to a 9-8-0 record. Her club produced two AllNortheast-10 student-athletes – Amber Simms ’15 and Monica Yanez ’14. Simms, a midfielder, also earned a place on the conference’s AllRookie Team. In her first season on the sidelines at Kayo Field, The Chargers went 9-8-2. That 2010 squad won three of its final four regular season matches to finish with a 7-6-2 Overall Record: 29-23-3 conference record and qualify Conference Record: 22-20-3 for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Chargers were University of New Haven recognized as NSCAA Academic Head Coach (2010-Present) Award recipients in 2010 while four student-athletes earned All-NE-10 Fairfield University honors.

Coming off of its most successful season since joining the Northeast-10 Conference, the University of New Haven women’s soccer team looks to maintain its reputation as a perennial winning program and return to prominence as a regional power.

Providing an additional offensive spark will be senior Tami Vargas, who has two career goals and two assists to her credit, and a pair of freshmen – Maggie Cohoon and Danielle Widmann.

SCHEDULE A difficult schedule is a given as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, and this fall is no exception as the Chargers will be on the road to meet 2012 National Semifinalist Saint Rose in addition to both defending NE-10 Champion Southern New Hampshire and regular season champion American International. Additionally, the non-conference slate brings the Blue and Gold to Oakdale, N.Y. to challenge two-time defending East Coast Conference Champion Dowling. In total, the Chargers will play 17 regular season matches this fall, highlighted by eight contests on the pitch at Kayo Field. The top eight teams in the 15-team Northeast-10 Conference will qualify for the NE-10 Championship slated for Nov. 5-10 with higher seeds hosting throughout.

Returning senior Alyssa Zargos and sophomore Emily Hoffman and a trio of freshmen – Shannon Enright, Cassidy Haigh and Sierra Stein – round out the midfield talent for Coach Duncan.

Another experienced keeper returning into the fold is junior Moriah Saidel. Saidel made six starts for New Haven last season, totaling two shutouts with a .840 save percentage and a 1.36 goals-against average. Freshman Deandra Nash rounds out the Chargers’ trio of goalkeepers.

MIDFIELDERS The most experience in the New Haven lineup is in the midfield. Nicole Pacapelli will control the offense in her senior season after racking up seven goals and three assists last fall. She will be joined by sophomore Marisa Garcia, who netted three goals with a team-high six assists in her rookie year, and junior Courtney Marra. Seniors Alexa Seidenfeld and Heather Timmons and sophomore Ashley Dawson, each of whom tallied one goal in 2012, will also vie for significant time in the Chargers’ midfield.

GOALKEEPERS Natasha Purchla will reassume the starting duties in goal as a junior after registering a majority of the minutes for the Chargers last season. She recorded three shutouts with a .826 save percentage and a 1.40 goals-against average.

2013 OUTLOOK

Joining Yanez up front is Amber Simms. Simms, a two-time AllNortheast-10 performer, moves to forward from the midfield to capitalize on her finishing ability in her junior season. She tallied two goals and handed out two assists while appearing in 14 matches in 2012.

Two newcomers who could make an immediate impact in the back row are sophomore Kelly Blank, who gained collegiate experience at Farmingdale State College last season, and freshman Carlie Schecht.

FORWARDS The Chargers’ offense will once again look to Monica Yanez in 2013. Yanez was a First Team All-Northeast-10 honoree last fall after netting a team-best 12 goals. The senior, who is also a member of the New Haven women’s track and field team, enters her final campaign needing two goals to crack the all-time top 10 in program history.

BACKS Despite graduating three of their four starting backs from last season, the Chargers will present a solid corps of defenders in 2013. The one returning starter is senior Amanda Hathaway, who scored one goal in addition to her role in five New Haven shutouts last fall. Taylor Szyarto will assume a starting role after appearing in all 19 matches as a reserve in her freshman campaign, tallying one goal and one assist. Junior Hannah Allen and sophomores Miranda Smith and Becca Sierejko will all be in contention for significant playing time when the Chargers reconvene for preseason training.

2013 COACHES

Head Coach Laura Duncan is entering her fourth season on the Chargers’ sidelines. New Haven has recorded three-straight winning campaigns under Duncan’s leadership including an 11-7-1 mark in 2012 – the program’s highest win total since 2007. The club’s eight conference wins and sixth-place finish in the Northeast-10 both represent program bests in five seasons as a member of the NE-10.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

SSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

From the field of play to inside the classroom, the Nor theast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. Of the nearly 6,000 honor roll selections for the fall and spring, 244 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 nineteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
