THE COACHES ROBIN SALTERS HEAD COACH
A former setter for the Chargers and a 1991 graduate of the University, Robin Salters continues to uphold the proud winning tradition of New Haven volleyball started by her former head coach and program founder, Deborah Chin. Since taking the helm in 1994 as only the second head coach in program history, Salters has posted a 534-150 record and .781 winning percentage.
A former player at Lake Michigan College where she earned an associate of arts degree, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the starting setter in 1989 and 1990. During her playing career at UNH, she earned All-Region honors and was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Year for the 199091 academic year. Salters concluded her career by winning the University’s NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 1991. An active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), Salters has served as the chair of the Northeast Regional selection committee, was a member of the Division II Head Coaches’ Committee and a voter for the organization’s weekly Top-25 poll. Robin has also served for 12 years as a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, including eight years as chair. In 2009 she served as the national chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Selection Committee. In 2009, Salters was also inducted into the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame. Salters is also UNH’s Senior Woman Administrator and Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities.
2013 OUTLOOK
Led by All-America honorees Keidy Candelaria and Amber Cannady, the 2012 Chargers finished at 30-2, completing their fifth-straight unbeaten trip through the Northeast-10 regular season and winning the Northeast-10 and NCAA East Region Championships en route to a 30-2 overall record. Candelaria was named the NE-10 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and was joined by Cannady on the conference’s First Team. Kaulana Ane and Kristen Lee also garnered NE-10 major awards as Setter and Rookie of the Year, respectively.
Salters became head coach at her alma mater in 1994 after serving as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University in 1993. Previously, she coached the Junior Olympics team for the Western Michigan Volleyball Association. While earning her Master’s degree at Western Michigan University, she also coached the Kalamazoo Central High School freshman team.
2013 PLAYERS
Salters continues to lead the New Haven women’s volleyball program to national prominence, as the 2012 campaign saw the Chargers advance to their 11th NCAA Elite Eight to conclude their seventh consecutive NCAA Championship trip and the 17th in Salters’ 19-year tenure. She was also recognized by her peers in 2012 as the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career.

20TH SEASON NEW HAVEN ’91
2012 REVIEW
Salters’ 534 victories following the 2012 season rank her at 22nd all-time in Division II coaching wins and 11th among active coaches. Her success is even more outstanding in terms of winning percentage, where her .782 mark against Division II competition is 10th all-time among coaches with 10 or more years at the Division II level. Fueled by the Chargers’ 23-7 record, Salters eclipsed the 500-win plateau in 2011. Since joining the Northeast-10 Conference in 2008, the Chargers are a perfect 74-0 in regular season conference matches en route to five straight NE-10 Regular Season Championships.
HISTORY & RECORDS
Salters was chosen as the 2012 AVCA East Region Coach of the Year, earning the accolade for the second time in five years, and was previously named the 2006 East Coast Conference and AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. In 2010, Salters earned her first Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year honor, after leading the Chargers to their third-straight undefeated conference season. The Chargers hosted the 2008 NCAA East Regional at Charger Gymnasium and Salters 534 Career Victories guided UNH to the regional title and a spot in the Elite Eight. 17 NCAA Appearances

CHARGER VOLLEYBALL 2013 COACHES 2013 PLAYERS 2013 OUTLOOK 2012 REVIEW
The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team defends its Northeast-10 and NCAA East Region Championships in 2013, looking for a seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason. Entering their 20th season under Head Coach Robin Salters ’91, the Chargers return 11 student-athletes from a squad that posted a 30-2 record with a perfect 15-0 NE-10 tally last fall.

Margo Meteyer was used primarily as a serving specialist last fall, racking up 34 aces in 81 sets, and will see a larger role in the offense in her junior season. Hayley Wilson has also earned more action for her junior campaign after totaling 32 kills and 38 digs in 47 sets as a sophomore. The Chargers have depth at the position with Damianis Eusebio, who appeared in seven sets in 2012 and posted five kills and two digs.
Defensive Specialists The back row is bolstered by sophomore Kea-Marie Olaso. The Chargers’ libero registered 497 digs last fall – the seventh-highest single-season total in New Haven history – en route to a team-best 4.40 digs per set and a spot on the NCAA Division II East Region All-Championship Team.
Spelling both Cannady and Atufunwa in the middle is senior Ashley Dalton, who came to New Haven prior to the 2012 season from Northern Arizona University. Ashley Gomez will be utilized as a defensive specialist and for her serving prowess in her junior campaign. Gomez recorded 41 digs in 58 sets of action last fall and landed four service aces. EXPECTATION OF EXCELLENCE The University of New Haven boasts one of the all-time best Division II women’s volleyball programs in the nation. Since joining the NCAA in 1982, UNH has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 27 times in 31 seasons. That string includes 19 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and 12 berths to the Elite Eight. Overall in 37 seasons, the Chargers have posted a record of 1,110328 - a winning percentage of .772. Two outstanding women are responsible for guiding the program to these astounding heights, recruiting top student-athletes and coaching against the best the country had to offer. The résumé of current head coach Robin Salters is highlighted on page 4. Deborah Chin, who is currently the Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics at UNH, is the program’s founder and was the Chargers’ head coach for the first 19 seasons. During that time, she fashioned herself a Hall of Fame career - literally. Chin was a member of the fourth class to enter the AVCA Hall of Fame, the sport’s highest honor, in December of 2006. She posted a record of 576-178 (.764) as coach and at the time of her retirement her winning percentage was ranked among the top five all-time. She led the Chargers to 10 NCAA Division II tournaments (and three AIAW tournaments), and New Haven was ranked in the top five four times. Chin’s teams won 30 or more matches 12 times, including six straight years. Six times she was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year, and eight times she was named New England College Conference Coach of the Year. In 10 of her final 11 seasons, Chin led the Chargers to at least the Sweet Sixteen, including four trips to the Elite Eight.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted
October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 nineteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
