2013-14 REVIEW

Most recently the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Seton Hall University, Grace brought 13 years of Division I coaching experience to New Haven. She was instrumental in assembling recruiting classes ranked as high as 25th in all of Division I as a member of the prestigious Big East Conference, including the signing of two McDonald’s All-America nominees. The Pirates’ roster included an All-Big East Rookie Team member and two Second Team All-Big East performers during Grace’s tenure in South Orange from 20092013. She coached alongside Anne Donovan, an Olympic gold medalist as both a coach and player and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame who is currently the head coach of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun.

Grace graduated from the University in 1999 with a B.S. in the Management of Sports Industries and later earned a Master’s of Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2001.

2014-15 OUTLOOK

New Haven’s NCAA postseason berth was the program’s first since 2006-07. An overtime setback to Adelphi in the East Region Quarterfinals concluded a season in which the Chargers reached their highest win total (18) since finishing at 21-9 in the 2007-08 campaign – their final season prior to joining the Northeast-10. Despite playing two fewer conference games this past winter, New Haven also matched the program record of 13 NE-10 wins.

A 2010 New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Grace is one of only two Chargers to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for her career, totaling 1,347 points and 1,047 boards with 47 double-doubles from 1994-98.

2014-15 PLAYERS

Ty Grace ‘99 became the 16th head coach of the University of New Haven women’s basketball team on July 22, 2013. She led the Chargers to an 18-10 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II East Region Championship in her first season on the sidelines at her alma mater.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. We have joined institutions across 22 conferences and independents in committing to safe, fun, and entertaining sporting experiences on Division II campuses. We have signed the pledge to create and continue family-friendly experiences for everyone.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours.
