The University of New Haven women’s lacrosse team returns 20 student-athletes who saw action in 2013 with hopes of making its sixth straight postseason appearance and the second NCAA postseason trip in program history. New Haven posted a 12-7 record last season and made its second Northeast-10 Championship semifinal appearance in five years as a member of the conference. The Chargers went 9-3 in conference play to earn the fourth seed and defeated No. 13 Bentley in the first round of the NE-10 Championship. The season concluded in the semifinals at eventual champions No. 4 Le Moyne. New Haven concluded the season ranked No. 13 in the IWLCA Division II Coaches’ Poll after climbing as high as No. 8 during the regular season.

minutes in 2014 after seeing action in 15 games and scoring six combined goals in their rookie campaigns. Caitlin O’Brien and Lindsay Lare help lead the freshman class this season for the Chargers. A First Team All-Cape Atlantic League selection, Lare claimed the record for career goals (130) and single-season goals (81) at Lower Cape May Regional High School. A member of the All-State and All-Southern Connecticut Conference teams in 2012 and 2013, O’Brien comes to UNH from Branford High School just down the Connecticut Shoreline as a taller left-handed attacker.

A pair of rookies will also make an instant impact in the UNH backline. In addition to adding depth in the midfield, Hannah Johnson will likely see significant time on defense. Meredith Michel, a freshman from Warwick High School in Lititz, Pa., was a three-time All-Lancaster Lebanon League honoree during her scholastic career.

The team returns to Kayo Field to take on Saint Anselm (April 5) and Adelphi (April 8), who reached the 2013 national seminifinals and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the nation. The Chargers travel to Merrimack on April 12 and return to New Haven for outings against NE-10 opponents Assumption (April 16) and Southern New Hampshire (April 19). The last three games of the regular season include an away contest at American International (April 22), a home matchup against the back-to-back NCAA Division II national champion LIU Post (April 24) and an away game at Saint Michael’s on April 26. The Northeast-10 Conference Championship, which features the top six teams in the conference, is set to run from April 30-May 4 and is followed by the Division II NCAA Championship from May 10-18.

In Strain’s three appearances, she allowed just one goal and faced four shots.

HISTORY & RECORDS

McDermott won the starting spot later in the 2013 season and recorded 13 starts. She boasted a 9.66 goals against average and a .457 save percentage. She posted a 10-3 record between the posts. Gianotti, the early season starter in 2013, went 2-4 a year ago with an 11.60 goals against average and a .403 save percentage.

The Chargers finish off their road swing on April 1 at 2013 national quarterfinalist Le Moyne.

2013 REVIEW

GOALKEEPER Of the many positions on the field, the New Haven goalkeeper position has been the closest contested during the fall and preseason – much like a year ago. All three goalkeepers on the roster have shown improvement and are battling for the starting spot. Sophomores Alyssa Gianotti and Marissa McDermott both saw significant time last season, while junior Sharon Strain played in three games.

The Chargers head out on the road for a three game stretch against perennial national powers starting on March 26 at Dowling followed by a March 29 trip to Bentley. New Haven defeated the No. 13 Falcons in both the regular season and NE-10 Championship Quarterfinals last spring.

2014 OUTLOOK

Additionally, senior Rachel Whitman and sophomores Maria Troisi and Christina Luca will provide depth to the defense. The three played in a combined 16 games last season. A first team All-Southern Connecticut Conference selection out of Branford High School, freshman Alicia Mortali will also see time off the bench in her rookie season.

New Haven will then head down to Arnold, Md. to play two neutralsite matches, starting with Grand Valley State on March 15. One day later, the Blue and Gold meets Pfieffer, who was ranked No. 8 at the end of the 2013 season. The Chargers then come back north to Kayo Field for an NE-10 matchup against last year’s NCAA semifinalist and No. 7 nationally-ranked Stonehill on March 22.

2014 PLAYERS

Another junior, Daina Catanese, as well as sophomore Sky Mahoney-Kendra will also see significant time on the defensive end. Catanese saw action in seven games with one start last year, while grabbing four ground balls and a caused turnover. Mahoney-Kendra also played in seven games with one start last year. She tallied two ground balls and one draw control.

The season begins with a pair of road matchups on March 4 at Molloy and March 11 at crosstown and NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut State. On March 13, the Chargers suit up at Kayo Field for their home opener against NE-10 opponent Franklin Pierce.

2014 COACHES

A couple of juniors will anchor the last line: Samantha Clyne and Brittany Ast. Both started all 19 games a year ago and contributed to one of the best defenses in the NE-10. Clyne picked up 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers, while Ast tallied 38 ground balls and tied for the team lead with 23 caused turnovers. Ast will once again be used to move the ball to the offensive zone with her quick feet.

SCHEDULE Two national quarterfinalists, a national semifinalist and the backto-back NCAA Division II national champion are among the teams highlighting the 2014 schedule. The slate features 17 regular-season matchups includes six opponents ranked nationally in the final IWLCA poll last spring.

project before graduation. Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

42

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation in 2010. UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of stateof-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979. Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland. In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

NCAA Division II presidents and chancellors affirm that athletics events should reflect the values of higher education and the mission of each institution. Division II emphasizes learning and development in a personal setting. As chancellors and presidents, we are concerned about the uncivil behavior exhibited at college athletics contests and thereby pledge to work together to make respectful, familyfriendly events a standard of the Division II experience.

DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. The University of New Haven seeks to provide the world with leaders who can make a positive difference in a global society. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. UNH’s intercollegiate program provides opportunities for its student-athletes to develop moral virtues, such as courage, self-confidence, and integrity and to learn communication and teamwork skills associated with outstanding leadership. Thus the Department of Athletics helps the University satisfy its primary aspiration, which is to prepare students to lead purposeful and fulfilling lives in a global society through experiential, collaborative, and discovery-based learning. The Department of Athletics is committed to delivering intercollegiate athletics programs that are consistent with the University’s mission and generates the trust and support of its various constituencies. The goal of the department is to field sports teams that compete successfully against other NCAA Division II teams while upholding the academic standards of the University of New Haven. The department is also committed to conducting its programs in strict adherence to the policies, rules and regulations set by the University’s administration, Board of Governors, the NCAA and the Northeast-10 Conference. Through its programs, the department gives its student-athletes of different genders, races, religions, national origins and sexual orientation opportunities to participate in intercollegiate competition. The intercollegiate program will function free of discrimination with a University commitment to the adherence to Title IX and the Office of Civil Rights guidelines. A major goal of the Department of Athletics is to help student-athletes realize the full potential of their athletic abilities while also increasing their intellectual capabilities and providing them a meaningful opportunity to earn a baccalaureate degree. The department will not compromise its commitment to educate and graduate its student-athletes. Department of Athletics personnel are expected to represent the University in a manner consistent with UNH’s principles and values. All personnel are expected to perform their responsibilities with the highest standards of integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship at all times. Coaches and staff are expected to treat student-athletes fairly and with respect and to facilitate leadership that helps them mature physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 nineteen times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 and finished third in 1977.
