RESIDENTIAL LIFE Making you feel at home is a priority at UNH. Our on-campus housing is available in 11 residence halls. Residential Life staff members live in each hall and help promote an atmosphere conducive to study and social interaction among students. Residence Hall Councils, composed of students elected by their peers, plan social and recreational activities and serve as representatives for students living in each hall. Room accommodations range from traditional residence halls (equipped with a fitness room and campus convenience store) to multi-bedroom, apartment-style residences.

The David A. Beckerman Recreation Center was made possible by a generous donation from alumnus David A. Beckerman. THE COACHES LAURA DUNCAN HEAD COACH

Laura Duncan has posted winning seasons in each of her first four campaigns at New Haven. She completed the 2013 season with a career record of 40-28-6.

Monica Yanez and Amber Simms each garnered First Team All-Northeast-10 laurels to lead a roster of five All-NE-10 honorees. Nicole Pacapelli capped her career with a Second Team distinction, while Marisa Garcia and Amanda Hathaway merited Third Team honors. Simms, Yanez and Pacapelli were all NSCAA All-East selections, and the trio was joined by Garcia as NEWISA All-New England honorees.

In 2012, the Chargers finished 11-7-1 – the program’s highest win total since 2007. A 2-0 blanking of defending ECC Champion and nationallyranked No. 23 Dowling highlighted a 4-0-0 start for the Chargers – New Haven would rise to 6-1-1 and, at No. 25, earned its first NSCAA national ranking since the 2007 preseason poll.

A 2005 graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Duncan was a four-year letterwinner for the Blue Devils. She helped Central Connecticut to three consecutive Northeast Conference Championships and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Duncan was a defender on the 2003 Blue Devils’ team that posted 10 shutouts en route to a 16-win campaign punctuated by a 1-0 victory over Boston College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Following that season, she garnered NSCAA Third Team All-Northeast Region, SoccerBuzz First Team All-Northeast Region and NEWISA First Team All-New England laurels. Duncan was also a two-time First Team All-NEC honoree during her 57-match career in New Britain.

On the national level, Simms added a Daktronics Honorable Mention All-America nod and Yanez collected a Capital One Academic All-America selection for her performance in the classroom.

Before coming to New Haven, Duncan served five seasons as an assistant for the Fairfield University women’s soccer team. Duncan was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, recruiting and game-day and practice coordination. While at Fairfield, the Stags were twice crowned Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions (2005 & 2008) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Duncan also mentored two MAAC Players of the Year for the Stags.

This past fall, New Haven completed its most successful season as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, finishing with a record of 11-5-3. The Chargers began the fall with a program-record eight-match unbeaten streak and won the first Northeast-10 postseason match in team history with a 5-1 triumph at Merrimack in the quarterfinal round.

FIFTH SEASON CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE ’05

A native of Seaford, England, Duncan also serves as a head coach for Connecticut Football Club (CFC) U12/U18 Impact. She currently resides in Hamden, Conn.

Five members earned All-Northeast-10 Conference honors, as voted upon by the conference’s 16 head coaches. Yanez, who finished the regular season ranked second in the conference with a team-best 12 goals, merited the Chargers’ first First Team All-NE-10 distinction since 2008. The junior forward added to her impressive campaign with a NSCAA First Team AllRegion, NEWISA First Team All-New England and Daktronics Second Team All-Region recognition.

In her first season on the sidelines at Kayo Field, The Chargers went 9-8-2. That 2010 squad won three of its final four regular season matches to finish with a 7-6-2 conference record and qualify for the Northeast-10 C o n fe r e n c e To u r n a m e n t . T h e Chargers were recognized as NSCAA Academic Award recipients in 2010 while four student-athletes earned All-NE-10 honors.

The fifth head coach in 20 seasons of New Haven women’s soccer, Duncan is the first head coach to boast a winning record in multiple seasons to begin his or her tenure at UNH. Duncan’s 2011 Chargers defeated three teams that advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament en route to a 9-8-0 record.

Nicole Pacapelli joins the New Haven Currently, Pacapelli competes with the CFC Passion of the Women’s women’s soccer coaching staff for the Premier Soccer League and coaches youth soccer with the 2014 season after a three-year career as Connecticut Football Club. as a student-athlete with the Chargers. A West Haven native, Pacapelli was a four-sport student-athlete A two-year captain, Pacapelli appeared in 55 matches in her three at West Haven High School. On the pitch, she was a Connecticut seasons at New Haven and ranks among the all-time top-20 with Coaches All-State honoree in addition to numerous All-Area and All13 career goals to go along with five assists. The Chargers made SCC selections. Pacapelli spent her freshman season at Stonehill a pair of Northeast-10 Championship appearances, including the College, recording two goals and one assist for the Skyhawks. first NE-10 postseason win in program history in 2013, and tallied a record of 31-20-4 with Pacapelli in the midfield. Pacapelli graduated from the University of New Haven in May of 2014 with a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics as a Dean’s List As a senior, Pacapelli was Second Team All-Northeast-10, NSCAA student and Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Third Team All-East and NEWISA All-New England honoree. THIRD SEASON LYNCHBURG ’07

Ben Weiss is in his third season at New Haven in 2014. Weiss has garnered nearly a decade of coaching experience at the collegiate, scholastic and club levels.

Weiss is the Assistant Director of Coaching for Travel in Wilton, Conn. In addition, he also is the administrative Director and Southwest Director of Coaching for CT Roma FC. He was previously the Assistant and Goalkeeper Coach at Immaculate High School in Danbury during which time the girls varsity program won three state championships. Ben holds an NSCAA National Diploma, NSCAA GK2 Diploma as well as the NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma.

THE UNIVERSITY

As a student-athlete, Weiss was a member of the 2006 ODAC Champions at Lynchburg College (Va.). He played scholastically at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Conn., winning a CIAC Class M State Championship in 2001. Weiss resides in Redding, Conn. with his wife, Mimi, and son, Rowan.

The University of New Haven women’s soccer team enters the 2014 in a familiar situation. Just as they did in 2013, the Chargers are tasked with replacing a highly accomplished senior class, as a strong crop of returners and promising newcomers look to build upon the program’s most successful season in recent history.

Midfielders The New Haven offense will be run through junior Marisa Garcia. A Second Team All-Northeast-10 honoree last fall, Garcia registered three goals and three assists in 2013, including the game-winner in the regular season finale at Southern New Hampshire and a marker and helper in the squad’s NE-10 postseason win.

Purchla and split a shutout with Moriah Saidel. Saidel posted back-toback conference wins against Southern Connecticut State and Franklin Pierce as a part of her five starts and seven total appearances in goal. Deandra Nash also returns to the Chargers after begin her collegiate career with a redshirt season learning from the two more experienced netminders. Schedule The New Haven schedule features eight matches played on Kayo Field as well as nine road contests. Prior to the Northeast-10 slate, the Chargers will travel to NYIT (Sept. 4) and Georgian Court (Sept. 7) before hosting Dowling on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.

Ashley Dawson also returns to the midfield, where she started all 19 contests as a sophomore. Dawson netted a goal in the conference win over Franklin Pierce – New Haven’s first-ever triumph over the perennial region powerhouse Ravens.

Goalkeepers Natasha Purchla will reclaim her starting position between the posts for her third season in 2014. Purchla started 14 matches last fall, posting a 0.85 goals-against average with three solo shutouts and a .850 save percentage.

Two freshmen who were also scholastic track stars in addition to their work on the pitch, will be called upon to spell their senior co-captains up top. Kelly Quigley won a Merrimack Valley Conference Championship at Tewksbury (Mass.) Memorial in addition to all-conference laurels in five different track and field events. Erica Silhan, who will join the Chargers’ track and field team in the winter and spring, was a key piece to the success of Bay Shore High School on the pitch and competed on the track at the national level.

Freshmen Lauren Low and Danielle Matassa will also contribute to the Chargers’ defense. Low was an All-State performer for three-time state champion Dover (Del.) High School, and Matassa earned First Team AllShore Conference laurels as senior team captain and MVP of Middletown (N.J.) North High School

Primarily a midfielder last season, Courtney Marra will move to forward for her senior season. Marra scored two goals, including the gamewinner, and an assist in the Chargers’ NE-10 Quarterfinal victory at Merrimack. Her lone regular-season marker also came against the Warriors.

Backs An experienced back row welcomes back three of four starters from 2013. Carlie Schecht, Miranda Smith and Taylor Szyarto were all key components to a defensive effort that posted four shutouts and a 1.11 goals-against average last fall. Additional returners to the back line are senior Hannah Allen and sophomore Shannon Enright.

Forwards Daktronics Honorable Mention All-America selection Amber Simms will once again head the scoring efforts up top. Simms amassed a teamleading 13 goals and 33 total points last season, ranking second in the Northeast-10 in both categories. In addition to her All-America nod, the New Haven striker collected NSCAA First Team All-East, Daktronics First Team All-East and First Team All-Northeast-10 laurels. She was also a Second Team All-New England honoree in her junior campaign.

The midfield will receive added depth from returners Kelly Blank, Cassidy Haigh, Sierra Stein and Danielle Widmann, all of whom began their New Haven careers last fall. Additionally, four freshmen boast the midfield as their primary position: Nicole Caruso, Rachel Dempsey, Allison Morgan and Nike Sporrong.

Laura Duncan helmed New Haven to an 11-5-3 record last fall and the team’s first-ever Northeast-10 postseason win – a 5-1 victory at Merrimack to advance to the NE-10 Championship Semifinals. Now in her fifth campaign patrolling the sidelines on Kayo Field, Duncan’s tenure with the Blue and Gold is comprised of four winning seasons en route to a career record of 40-28-6.

The Chargers will also regain the services of Alexa Seidenfeld, who missed all of 2013 after appearing in 18 contests in 2012. The graduate student posted one goal and one assist in her last active campaign with the Blue and Gold.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University President

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies. Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University. In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters. Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (he was associate producer of the film), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation. Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. Since becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 199899 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication. As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was at that time only the fifth Division II coach to win 500 career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top five four times. Her awards include six AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician. As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven. A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and find UNH a new athletics conference that best fits the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the department of intercollegiate athletics is to support the mission of the university and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. The department will provide growth opportunities to achieve in a nationally competitive intercollegiate program that attracts, nurtures and graduates student-athletes who under the guidance of a quality staff, represent the University of New Haven with character and integrity while achieving academic excellence, serving the community and pursuing excellence in their respective sports. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY Higher education has lasting importance on an individual’s future success. For this reason, the emphasis for the student-athlete experience at the University of New Haven is a comprehensive program of learning and development in a personal setting. As an NCAA Division II program, our approach provides growth opportunities through academic achievement, learning in high-level athletic competition and development of positive societal attitudes in service to community. The balance and integration of these different areas of learning opportunity provide our student-athletes a path to graduation while cultivating a variety of skills and knowledge for life ahead. Studentathletes are afforded unique opportunities for leadership because of the visibility provided through athletics competition. DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS • Women’s Basketball won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1987, becoming the first team from the Northeast Region to win the title. • Women’s track and field has produced arguably the most successful individual student-athlete in Charger athletics history. Shannon Gagne won an unmatched five national championships during the 2010-11 academic year and helped bring the program a fourth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship meet - the highest finish in program history. • The UNH women’s volleyball team has reached the NCAA Sweet 16 twenty times since 1983, and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight twelve times. • Baseball has consistently been ranked as one of the winningest Division II programs in NCAA history. Baseball Coach Emeritus Frank “Porky” Vieira retired after the 2006 season as Division II’s all-time winningest coach by percentage, and logged 1,127 career victories. The team has appeared in 17 College World Series and made 33 Regional appearances, including their most recent run in 2013. • Baseball has also produced nine major league players, including former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian of the Philadelphia Phillies and First Round Draft Pick Cameron Drew. • The football program has appeared in six NCAA championship playoffs, earning runner-up status in 1997. At the time, the titlegame appearance made UNH the only football team in the State of Connecticut to ever compete for a national title and the smallest school (in terms of enrollment) to compete for an NCAA Championship. Most recently, the football program has appeared in the NCAA tournament in both 2011 and 2012. • Tailback Roger Graham won the 1993 Harlon Hill Trophy as the top Division II Football Player in the nation. • Men’s Soccer reached the NCAA finals in 1976 as has appeared in three Final Fours.
